Merlin Bird ID is usually the easier starting point for field birding: its Sound ID listens continuously, offers live suggestions, works offline, and links each result to recordings, range information, and identification notes. BirdNET is better suited to people who want to record a short clip, inspect a spectrogram, and review ranked matches with confidence scores; its separate BirdNET Live app is designed for continuous, on-device identification. Neither app proves a species on its own. Your region, need for offline use, preferred recording workflow, and willingness to verify candidates should determine the choice.
What a bird-call app can—and cannot—tell you
Sound-identification apps analyze a microphone recording and return possible species. They do not establish a record-quality identification automatically. Wind, insects, traffic, echoes, overlapping songs, juvenile calls, and an unfamiliar regional dialect can all produce plausible but incorrect matches.

Cornell’s guidance is explicit: “Merlin’s suggestions are just a starting point. You should always independently verify each suggestion before reporting it.” The same discipline applies to BirdNET’s ranked list and confidence scores. Treat an app result as a hypothesis, then test it against the bird’s example recordings, geographic range, habitat, behavior, season, and—when practical—a visual observation. If the evidence does not fit, leave the observation unconfirmed rather than forcing a name.

Merlin and BirdNET at a glance
| Reader need | Merlin Bird ID | BirdNET |
|---|---|---|
| Typical sound workflow | Sound ID listens to nearby birds and displays suggestions as it hears them. | The standard app describes recording a few seconds, then analyzing the clip. BirdNET Live is a separate app described as continuous, real-time identification. |
| Offline behavior | Cornell says Sound ID works offline. | BirdNET says BirdNET Live performs inference on the device and works without internet. The standard app page does not clearly establish offline operation for every workflow. |
| Reported sound coverage | Cornell’s help material reports 2,000-plus species by sound, concentrated in the United States, Canada, and Europe, with some common widespread birds in India and Central and South America. | The BirdNET app page claims more than 6,000 species across all continents. |
| Learning context | Suggestions connect to example recordings, range maps, species information, and the Explore Birds guide. | Results include a spectrogram, ranked matches, confidence scores, and an optional way to contribute an observation. |
| Verification support | Cornell directs users to compare audio and check range, habitat, behavior, season, and sighting. | Confidence scores and cleaner recordings help you judge a result, but independent confirmation is still necessary. |
| Audio handling | Sessions stay on the phone unless you choose to share or export them. | Audio that users submit can support research and model development; human speech is filtered and location sharing is optional. |
The species totals come from each project’s own product information, not from a common independent test. They indicate advertised coverage, not comparative accuracy.
How Merlin Sound ID works in the field
Live suggestions while you listen
Open Merlin’s Sound ID feature before or during a walk and allow it to listen through the phone microphone. As calls arrive, the app surfaces possible species in real time. This is useful when a bird sings intermittently and you want immediate candidates rather than waiting until the end of a recording.
Offline operation
Cornell states that Sound ID works offline. Download the relevant bird packs and any needed content before leaving service, then test the feature in airplane mode at home. Offline capability is particularly useful in remote reserves, underground trails, or places where roaming data is expensive.

The Cornell Sound ID documentation reports support for more than 2,000 species by sound. That coverage is strongest in the United States, Canada, and Europe, with some common widespread species in India and Central and South America. A result outside those areas deserves extra skepticism because a missing local species may simply be outside the feature’s stated coverage.
Merlin’s advantage is the material around the suggestion. You can open example recordings, inspect a range map, read species details, and use Explore Birds to compare similar calls. Those tools make it easier to ask whether a candidate belongs in your location and habitat instead of accepting the first name displayed.

Saving and exporting recordings
Merlin’s Sound ID help says recordings are saved on your phone and are not automatically transmitted to Cornell. You can export selected audio and add it manually to eBird and the Macaulay Library. That gives you control over what becomes public or enters a personal archive. The app is described as free to download and use in Cornell’s Merlin Bird ID FAQs; app-store availability and platform details can change, so check the current listing for your device.
How BirdNET works
The standard record-and-analyze workflow
BirdNET’s standard app page describes a short recording followed by analysis. After you stop recording, the app presents ranked species matches, a spectrogram, and confidence scores. This approach suits birders who want to keep a clip, inspect when the vocalization occurred, and compare several candidate species rather than watching a constantly changing live list.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →BirdNET Live is a separate option
BirdNET Live should not be confused with the standard app workflow. The project describes Live as continuous real-time identification using on-device inference. It is also described as working without internet. If uninterrupted offline listening is your priority, install and test BirdNET Live specifically; do not assume that every function in the standard BirdNET app has the same offline behavior.
Advertised global coverage
On its official app page, BirdNET claims more than 6,000 species across all continents. That is a vendor-reported coverage figure, not a head-to-head accuracy measurement against Merlin. A high total does not guarantee that a particular regional dialect, scarce species, or noisy recording will be recognized correctly.
Contributing observations
BirdNET offers an optional contribution path. The project says submitted recordings are used for research and model development, human speech is filtered, and location is optional and controlled by the user. Read the current privacy notice before submitting sensitive recordings, and leave location disabled when precise coordinates are not needed.

Which app works best where you live?
United States, Canada, and Europe
Merlin’s documented sound coverage is strongest in these regions, and its field-guide material can help you distinguish common look-alikes. BirdNET may still return useful candidates, especially if you prefer spectrograms and recorded clips. Compare the local species lists in both apps before a trip to a specialized habitat such as a marsh or alpine valley.
India, Central America, and South America
Merlin’s documentation mentions some common, widespread birds in India and Central and South America, but does not claim worldwide coverage. BirdNET advertises coverage on every continent, yet that statement remains a product claim rather than proof that every local species is equally well represented. In regions where either app offers few plausible candidates, use recordings from a regional field guide or local bird group to verify calls.
Elsewhere
Check each app’s current species availability for the country or island you will visit. If the target species is absent from the downloadable pack or the app repeatedly proposes birds outside their known range, record clean clips for later comparison instead of treating a forced match as an identification.
How to record a clip that gives either model a fair chance
- Prepare before the walk. Install the app, download offline content where offered, and confirm that the microphone permission is enabled. Test a known bird in a quiet place.
- Approach without disturbing the bird. Move only as close as the bird tolerates. Do not enter nests, playback territory repeatedly, or alter behavior just to improve a recording.
- Uncover the microphone. Keep fingers, a case flap, and clothing away from the phone’s microphone openings.
- Stand still and quiet. Handling noise and conversation can dominate a short clip. Pause footsteps and silence notification sounds.
- Favor clear audio. Wind protection, a stable grip, and a position sheltered from traffic or running water usually help more than simply recording longer.
- Capture enough context for your purpose. For an identification, a few clean seconds may be enough for BirdNET’s analysis. Cornell recommends at least 30 seconds when a recording is intended for Merlin or eBird archiving; that is an archive recommendation, not a requirement for every in-app suggestion.
- Keep the original clip. Save the unedited file when possible. A longer recording lets you revisit a second call that the first analysis missed.
BirdNET’s app guidance similarly recommends a steady phone, low background noise, and good-quality audio. A phone microphone is sufficient for ordinary identification; an external microphone is an optional accessory for people building a serious audio archive, not a stated requirement for either app.
How to verify a suggested species
Listen to the reference recordings
Play several examples for the leading candidate, not just the first result. Compare rhythm, pitch movement, note spacing, and the order of phrases. A bird that produces one familiar note can still have a different full song.

Check geography and habitat
Confirm that the species’ range overlaps your location and date. Then ask whether the habitat fits: a marsh specialist is less likely in a dry city park, while a woodland singer may be unlikely on an exposed beach. Range maps and species notes in Merlin are useful for this check.
Use behavior, season, and sighting as additional evidence
Breeding songs, alarm calls, and winter contact notes can differ. Consider the season and the behavior you observed. A visual sighting is helpful but not mandatory; if you do see the bird, compare field marks with the audio rather than allowing one to override an obvious mismatch.
Handle uncertainty honestly
If two species remain plausible, keep the record at the broader level you can support or mark it as unconfirmed. Cornell specifically advises not reporting a Merlin suggestion to eBird as confirmed until you have independently checked it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understanding confidence scores and accuracy claims
BirdNET’s confidence score ranks how strongly its model matches the supplied clip; it is not a probability that the species is correct in your exact location. Merlin’s live list is also a set of suggestions, not a certainty meter. Neither project’s cited pages provide a directly comparable, independent accuracy percentage for Merlin versus BirdNET. Do not convert the advertised species totals into an accuracy ranking, and do not treat a high score as a substitute for geographic and acoustic verification.
Model performance is affected by the recording itself. A close, isolated song can produce a stronger match than a louder but distant bird under heavy wind. Re-record from a different position, trim nothing until you have saved the original, and compare results across multiple clips when the identity matters.
Best Value
Privacy, sharing, and your field archive
Merlin
According to Cornell’s Sound ID help, Merlin recordings remain on the phone unless you choose to share them. You can export files and submit selected examples to eBird or the Macaulay Library manually. This is a useful arrangement if you want a private working archive and deliberate control over publication.
BirdNET
BirdNET describes submitted recordings as contributions to research and model development. Human speech is filtered, and location is optional and user-controlled; when provided, the project says it helps track species diversity and change over time. Review current privacy terms before uploading recordings that include people, private property, or sensitive locations.
Choosing between Merlin, BirdNET, and BirdNET Live
| If your priority is… | Most suitable starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate suggestions while walking | Merlin Sound ID | It listens continuously and displays live candidates. |
| Offline use with a live workflow | Merlin Sound ID or BirdNET Live | Both named features are documented as operating offline; BirdNET’s statement specifically applies to BirdNET Live. |
| Recorded clips, spectrograms, and ranked results | BirdNET standard app | Its described workflow analyzes a short recording and shows confidence-ranked matches. |
| Built-in field-guide learning | Merlin Bird ID | Example audio, range maps, species details, and Explore Birds sit beside the sound result. |
| Global advertised species breadth | BirdNET | The project claims more than 6,000 species across all continents, subject to the qualification that this is a product claim. |
| Selective sharing and archiving | Merlin | Recordings stay on the phone unless you export or share them. |
| Optional contribution to model development | BirdNET | The project provides an opt-in submission path and says location is user-controlled. |
Many birders can use both: Merlin for a fast field shortlist and contextual study, then BirdNET or BirdNET Live for a second opinion or a saved spectrogram. Running two apps does not create certainty; it only gives you independent model outputs to evaluate against the actual sound and habitat.
Common problems and practical fixes
The app returns only common birds
Move away from traffic and running water, shield the microphone from wind, and record again. Check whether the species is covered in your region and whether the required offline pack is installed. Do not interpret a short candidate list as proof that rarer birds are absent.
Results change every few seconds
Live models react to each new slice of audio. Stop moving, let a complete phrase finish, and save a longer clip. Compare the stable candidates with reference recordings instead of chasing every transient label.
The result conflicts with what you saw
Recheck the visual identification, range, season, and habitat. Listen for the exact phrase in the app’s examples. If the conflict remains, retain the recording as uncertain and seek a regional expert or trusted field guide.
There is no signal in the field
Merlin Sound ID is documented to work offline, and BirdNET Live is described as on-device and offline. Test those specific features in airplane mode before the trip. Do not assume that an internet-dependent part of the standard BirdNET workflow will behave identically without service.
Bottom line for field birders
Choose Merlin when you want a straightforward live listener with offline Sound ID and integrated species-learning tools, especially in its strongest documented regions. Choose BirdNET when you prefer recording and reviewing clips, spectrograms, confidence-ranked matches, or the project’s optional contribution workflow. Choose BirdNET Live when continuous, on-device identification is the specific requirement. Whichever app you use, preserve a clean recording, check the candidate against real-world evidence, and report only what you can independently support.
