Bird Construction (TSX: BDT) and Aecon Group (TSX: ARE) offer different ways to invest in Canada’s construction cycle. Bird is the smaller, more focused construction-and-maintenance business, with higher 2025 adjusted EBITDA margin and a large pipeline of recurring master-service-agreement work. Aecon is the larger, more diversified infrastructure platform, with nuclear, utilities, transit, civil construction and concessions exposure, plus a much larger contracted backlog.
Neither is a universal winner. Bird generally fits an investor prioritizing margin, self-perform capabilities and recurring work. Aecon generally fits an investor prioritizing scale, diversified infrastructure exposure and concessions. The right choice depends on how you weigh execution risk, income, backlog quality and portfolio concentration—not on a headline revenue comparison.

| Reported 2025 revenue measure | C$3.3968 billion of construction revenue | C$5.435 billion of revenue |
| 2025 adjusted EBITDA | C$222.1 million | C$234.6 million |

| Year-end contracted backlog | C$5.1 billion | C$10.714 billion |
| Additional backlog disclosure | More than C$6.0 billion of pending backlog, including more than C$1.5 billion of recurring-revenue contracts | 2025 new contract awards of C$9.487 billion |
| Declared dividend | C$0.07 per share monthly for March and April 2026 | C$0.1925 per share quarterly |
| Principal portfolio question | Can pending awards convert on schedule, and can margins absorb customer and acquisition risks? | Can large, complex projects earn acceptable returns while legacy fixed-price exposure declines? |
The revenue figures are not perfectly like-for-like: Bird’s disclosure is construction revenue, while Aecon reports company revenue that includes its broader structure. Adjusted EBITDA is a management performance measure, not IFRS net income, so the margin comparison should be read alongside each company’s reported earnings and unusual items.

What Bird Construction owns and operates
A focused construction, maintenance and self-perform platform
Bird operates across industrial work, buildings, infrastructure and maintenance. Its self-perform capabilities allow it to carry out selected scopes with its own crews and equipment rather than subcontracting every activity. That can improve schedule control and capture more of the value chain, although it also leaves the company responsible for labour, equipment and execution costs.
Maintenance and task-order work are important because they can produce repeat assignments after a project is complete. Bird’s pending backlog included more than C$1.5 billion of recurring-revenue contracts, primarily multi-year master service agreements, maintenance arrangements and task orders. Those awards were identified as pending rather than contracted, so they provide visibility without having the same status as the C$5.1 billion contracted backlog.
FRPD expands marine and foundation capabilities
Bird’s FRPD acquisition adds marine and foundation work to the platform. The transaction was financed with a new term loan, which increases the importance of integration, cash-flow conversion and debt management. An acquisition can broaden the addressable market, but the benefits depend on retaining customers and employees while delivering the expected project economics.
Bird’s strategic positioning
Chief executive Teri McKibbon said Bird is positioned for Canada’s long-duration nation-building investment cycle, including capital-intensive energy projects such as liquefied natural gas and nuclear, as well as infrastructure renewal in defence, healthcare, transportation and trade. That statement describes an addressable opportunity, not a guaranteed award schedule or earnings forecast. Investors still need to track actual awards, contract terms and project margins.
What Aecon owns and operates
Construction plus concessions
Aecon combines a large Construction business with Concessions. Its project exposure spans nuclear, utilities, civil infrastructure, transit and other major public and private works. Concessions can provide an investment and operating role beyond one-time construction revenue, but they also bring long development timelines, financing requirements and risks specific to each asset.

Nuclear, power and transit exposure
Aecon has been expanding as a nuclear and power company while maintaining substantial utilities and transit activity. These markets can benefit from long-term electrification, grid investment and public-infrastructure programs. They also involve demanding safety, permitting, engineering and stakeholder requirements. The completion of major projects can materially affect annual results, and delays or cost overruns can have the opposite effect.
Scale and international reach
Chief executive Jean-Louis Servranckx described 2025 as a transformative year marked by strategic acquisitions, growth as a nuclear and power company, expansion in U.S. and international markets, and substantial completion of two modern light-rail transit systems. Scale can help Aecon bid on projects that are too large for smaller contractors and spread corporate capabilities across more markets. It does not eliminate execution risk on fixed-price or technically complex work.
Backlog: why the headline totals are not interchangeable
Aecon’s contracted backlog
Aecon ended 2025 with C$10.714 billion of backlog, a contracted measure. It also reported C$9.487 billion of new contract awards during 2025. Contracted backlog is work that has reached the company’s defined contractual threshold and is expected to convert into future revenue, subject to the normal risks of timing, cancellation, change orders, customer funding and project execution.
Bird’s contracted and pending categories
Bird reported C$5.1 billion of contracted backlog and more than C$6.0 billion of pending backlog. Pending backlog is awarded or otherwise identified work that has not yet been included in the contracted figure. It should not be added directly to Aecon’s contracted backlog for a like-for-like ranking.
Bird’s pending category is strategically important because more than C$1.5 billion was tied to recurring-revenue contracts. Multi-year master service agreements and task orders can smooth activity compared with a portfolio made solely of large, one-time projects. However, the customer still has to issue work, funding and scope must remain available, and the company must execute profitably. Pending backlog therefore offers potential visibility, not the same certainty as contracted backlog.

Questions to ask when reading either backlog
- What percentage is fixed-price, unit-price, cost-plus or reimbursable?
- How quickly is the backlog expected to convert into revenue and cash?
- Are major projects concentrated among a few customers, provinces or sectors?
- How much work remains subject to permits, financing, design completion or notice to proceed?
- Do recent awards carry margins consistent with the company’s historical performance?
Margins and earnings quality
Bird’s margin advantage in 2025
Bird’s 2025 adjusted EBITDA margin was 6.5%, above Aecon’s 4.3%. A higher margin can indicate better project selection, a larger maintenance contribution, stronger self-perform economics or simply a different business mix. It is not proof that Bird will maintain the spread: construction margins can move sharply when labour, materials, claims, weather and project timing change.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Bird’s reported net income was C$47.4 million, but the company also recorded a C$62.2 million impairment on receivables and contract assets connected with one customer’s creditworthiness. That charge is a reminder that a profitable project can still create a loss if the customer cannot pay. When evaluating Bird, separate recurring operating performance from the effect of this disclosed credit event and monitor collections, contract assets and customer concentration.
Aecon’s 2025 recovery after a difficult 2024
Aecon’s 2025 profit attributable to shareholders was C$15.2 million. That result represented a sharp improvement from the C$59.5 million loss attributable to shareholders recorded in 2024. The comparison shows why a single year’s EBITDA margin or net income should not be treated as a steady-state earnings rate.
Aecon’s 2024 annual report described ongoing exposure to losses on legacy fixed-price projects. On a fixed-price contract, the contractor generally bears more of the risk that labour, materials, design changes or schedule delays exceed the original estimate. Aecon’s progress in completing legacy work matters because resolving those contracts can remove a drag on future earnings, but investors should verify that improvement in subsequent filings rather than assume the risk has disappeared.
Adjusted EBITDA versus IFRS earnings
Adjusted EBITDA excludes or adjusts for items that management considers non-operating, unusual or otherwise not representative. It can help compare operating periods, but it does not pay interest, taxes, capital expenditures or dividends. Net income includes the broader accounting effects that shareholders ultimately bear, including impairments and project losses. For these stocks, review both measures, along with operating cash flow, contract assets, receivables and debt.

Dividend income: declared rates, not promises
Aecon’s quarterly distribution
Aecon raised its declared dividend to C$0.1925 per share quarterly. The payment frequency may suit investors who prefer quarterly income, but future dividends depend on board decisions, earnings, cash flow, leverage and contractual obligations. A declared rate should not be presented as a guaranteed future return.
Bird’s monthly distribution
Bird declared C$0.07 per share monthly for March and April 2026. Monthly payments can be useful for cash-flow planning, but this disclosure covers those declared months; it is not evidence that the rate is permanent. Investors should check each subsequent dividend announcement and assess whether operating cash flow supports distributions after working-capital needs and acquisition financing.
How to compare the dividends responsibly
- Use the current share price and declared rate to calculate a yield on the date of analysis; do not compare yields from different dates.
- Check payout against free cash flow, not only adjusted EBITDA.
- Review debt maturities, acquisition financing and required project investment.
- Consider whether monthly or quarterly timing matters in your account.
- Account for Canadian tax treatment and the type of account in which you hold the shares.
Risk profile: what can go wrong
Bird’s key risks
- Customer credit: The C$62.2 million impairment demonstrates that receivables and contract assets can be impaired when a customer’s financial condition deteriorates.
- Pending-backlog conversion: More than C$6.0 billion of pending work is not the same as contracted backlog. Delays, scope changes or cancellations could reduce the expected conversion.
- Acquisition leverage and integration: The FRPD acquisition was financed with a new term loan. Integration costs, interest expense or weaker-than-expected performance could reduce shareholder returns.
- Project timing: Large industrial, infrastructure and building projects can move between quarters or years, creating lumpy revenue and cash flow.
- Customer and sector concentration: A problem at a major customer or in a key end market can have an outsized effect on a smaller platform.
Aecon’s key risks
- Legacy fixed-price exposure: The 2024 loss and annual-report discussion show that older contracts can continue to affect results after award.
- Megaproject execution: Nuclear, transit and civil projects involve complex engineering, safety, permitting and stakeholder dependencies. A delay or cost overrun can overwhelm profits from smaller jobs.
- Concessions and financing: Concession assets may require substantial capital and can be sensitive to interest rates, traffic or usage, inflation and regulatory decisions.
- Acquisition and international execution: A broader geographic and business footprint creates opportunities but adds integration, currency, legal and local-market complexity.
- Low-margin volatility: A 4.3% adjusted EBITDA margin leaves less room for an unexpected cost event than a business with a much wider margin.
Valuation: what you need before choosing on price
A current valuation comparison cannot be made responsibly from operating figures alone. You need synchronized share prices, market capitalizations, net debt, share counts and current analyst estimates collected on the same date. Useful measures may include enterprise value to adjusted EBITDA, price to earnings, free-cash-flow yield and backlog relative to annual revenue, but each can mislead if one company is recovering from project losses or carrying a different mix of concessions and construction.
Do not infer that Bird is cheap because its margin is higher, or that Aecon is expensive because its revenue is larger. A smaller company can trade at a premium for growth and recurring work; a larger company can trade at a discount because investors are pricing execution risk. Without synchronized market data, this comparison is a business-fit analysis, not a target-price call.

Which stock fits which investor?
| If your priority is… | The better initial fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Higher recent operating margin | Bird | Its 2025 adjusted EBITDA margin was higher, although the spread may not persist. |
| Recurring maintenance and task-order work | Bird | More than C$1.5 billion of pending backlog was associated with recurring-revenue contracts. |
| Maximum contracted backlog and scale | Aecon | Its year-end contracted backlog was materially larger and supported by broad project capacity. |
| Nuclear, utilities and transit exposure | Aecon | Those sectors are central to its Construction and strategic growth profile. |
| Concessions alongside construction | Aecon | The Concessions segment adds an asset-development and operating dimension. |
| A smaller, more focused operator | Bird | Its mix is concentrated in construction, maintenance, infrastructure and self-perform capabilities. |
| Lower tolerance for project-complexity surprises | Neither automatically | Bird has credit, conversion and acquisition risks; Aecon has megaproject and legacy fixed-price risks. |
A practical decision process
- Define the role in your portfolio. Decide whether you want a Canadian industrial compounder, an infrastructure-cycle exposure, dividend income or diversification from other holdings.
- Choose your backlog standard. If you only count contracted work, compare Bird’s contracted backlog with Aecon’s contracted backlog. Treat Bird’s pending backlog as a separate upside scenario rather than guaranteed revenue.
- Set an earnings-quality test. Review adjusted EBITDA, IFRS net income, operating cash flow, receivables, contract assets and project provisions together.
- Stress the specific risks. For Bird, model a slower conversion of pending awards, another customer-credit problem or higher interest expense after the FRPD financing. For Aecon, test additional cost pressure on fixed-price projects and delays on complex infrastructure work.
- Verify the dividend. Use the latest company declaration, then compare the payment with cash generation, debt service and planned capital requirements.
- Complete a dated valuation check. Record the share price, market capitalization, net debt and earnings estimates on the same date before deciding whether either stock offers an attractive entry point.
- Size the position for concentration risk. Construction earnings can be cyclical and lumpy. A diversified portfolio should not depend on one project, province, customer or dividend continuing without interruption.
How to research or buy BDT and ARE
Both securities trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange under BDT and ARE. Before placing an order, read the latest annual and quarterly filings, management discussion, backlog definitions, debt notes and dividend announcement. Confirm whether a headline backlog number is contracted, pending, awarded, funded or subject to notice to proceed.
Best Value
Use a regulated Canadian brokerage account that provides access to the TSX, and review its commission, foreign-exchange, account and order-routing terms. A limit order can help control the price you pay in a volatile market; a market order prioritizes execution but can fill at a less favourable price when the quote is moving. Record the date and assumptions behind your valuation so a later price change is not confused with a change in business fundamentals.
Bottom line for portfolio fit
Bird is the more natural candidate for an investor who values a focused construction-and-maintenance platform, a higher recent adjusted EBITDA margin and the possibility that recurring master-service-agreement work becomes a larger share of revenue. That case must be balanced against the customer-credit impairment, pending-backlog conversion and new term-loan exposure from FRPD.
Aecon is the more natural candidate for an investor who wants scale, a much larger contracted backlog and exposure to nuclear, utilities, transit, civil infrastructure and concessions. The trade-off is greater sensitivity to complex megaproject execution and the remaining effects of legacy fixed-price work, despite the improvement from its 2024 loss.
