BioShock Co‑Op vs. BioShock 2 Multiplayer: What’s Actually Available?

Short answer: the original BioShock 2 included a separate competitive multiplayer experience set during Rapture’s collapse. It was not a co-op version of the single-player campaign. BioShock Infinite shipped without multiplayer, and BioShock: The Collection contains the campaigns but omits BioShock 2’s multiplayer.

That distinction matters when choosing an edition. A product page that says “multiplayer” does not promise a two-player story campaign, while a collection that includes all three stories does not include every feature from the original release. The original game, the remastered release and the collection must be treated as different products.

At a glance: which BioShock game has multiplayer?

Game or edition What is included Co-op campaign? Buying implication
BioShock 2 original release A separate multiplayer experience set during Rapture’s fall. Players are Plasmid test subjects and progress with weapons, Plasmids and Tonics. The original Steam listing describes this mode. No co-op story campaign is established by the official descriptions. Investigate this exact original edition and platform if multiplayer is your priority.
BioShock Infinite No released multiplayer mode. GameSpot reported creative director Ken Levine answering whether the game would have multiplayer: “Nope.” GameSpot’s report. No. There is no multiplayer or co-op option to select.
BioShock: The Collection The three games’ single-player content. The collection announcement explicitly says, “Multiplayer will not be included.” 2K’s announcement. No BioShock 2 multiplayer. Buy it for the campaigns and remastered presentation, not for online matches.
BioShock 2 Remastered The remastered single-player release associated with the collection; the collection does not carry over the original multiplayer mode. No. Do not assume “Remastered” means feature parity with the original release.

First, separate “co-op” from “multiplayer”

Co-op means two or more people work together through a campaign or shared objectives, usually with each player controlling a character. A co-op BioShock campaign would let friends progress through the same story, areas and missions as a team.

Multiplayer is the broader category. It can describe competitive matches, cooperative missions, persistent progression or other online modes. The word alone does not tell you whether players are allies, opponents or participants in a separate ruleset.

The wording around BioShock 2 describes multiplayer as its own experience rather than as a cooperative route through the story campaign. The official material does not present the single-player narrative as playable by two people. Calling the mode “co-op” therefore gives the wrong expectation, even though it is accurate to call the original game multiplayer.

What the original BioShock 2 multiplayer actually is

A Rapture-set mode with its own premise

The original Steam product description says that, during the fall of Rapture, players assume the role of a Plasmid test subject for Sinclair Solutions. That description appears in the original product listing. Take-Two’s May 8, 2009 announcement likewise said that players would step into the shoes of Rapture citizens and learn more about the city’s fall as they progressed through the experience. Read the announcement from Take-Two and 2K.

Those descriptions establish a multiplayer setting connected to the BioShock fiction, but not a two-player version of the campaign starring the single-player protagonist. The mode uses Rapture’s setting and story context while functioning as a distinct shooter experience.

Weapons, Plasmids and Tonics are part of multiplayer progression

The listing identifies the same broad toolset that defines BioShock combat: conventional weapons, Plasmids and Tonics. In multiplayer, those systems support a player’s progression as a test subject rather than simply reproducing the exact loadout and sequence of the single-player campaign.

This is an important practical distinction. You should expect a mode built around player-versus-player interaction and character development, not a second person joining your save file to open story doors, complete objectives and watch the campaign’s scripted scenes. The available official descriptions do not establish a cooperative campaign structure, specific match types, map counts or player limits, so those details should not be inferred from the word “multiplayer.”

Why the setting can feel like an extension of the story without being co-op

Rapture’s fall provides the historical backdrop for the mode. Players are framed as people inside that crisis, and the official announcement says the experience reveals more about the fall as they progress. That narrative framing can make the mode feel related to the main game, but shared lore is not the same as shared campaign progression.

Think of it as a separate branch of the BioShock experience: familiar locations, weapons and powers, but a different structure and purpose. If your goal is to experience the main BioShock 2 story with a friend, the original multiplayer listing does not promise that feature.

Does BioShock 2 have co-op?

Not in the sense most players mean by “co-op campaign.” The original release had multiplayer, but the cited official descriptions call it a separate multiplayer experience. They do not describe two players jointly completing the single-player storyline.

Use this test when reading a listing:

  • If it says players are Plasmid test subjects and describes progression through a multiplayer experience, it is referring to the separate mode.
  • If it promises campaign co-op, shared story checkpoints or two-player completion of the single-player missions, that would be a different feature; the supplied official descriptions do not make that promise.
  • If a modern collection advertises the three games’ single-player content, do not assume the historical multiplayer component is included.

In other words, “Does BioShock 2 have multiplayer?” can be answered yes for the original release. “Can two people play through BioShock 2’s story together?” is not supported by the official descriptions and should be treated as no.

BioShock Infinite: no released multiplayer mode

BioShock Infinite does not include a released multiplayer or co-op mode. GameSpot reported that Ken Levine, creative director of Irrational Games, answered “Nope” when asked whether the game would feature multiplayer. See the contemporaneous GameSpot report.

That means there is no hidden co-op menu, two-player campaign option or multiplayer add-on in the released game to configure. The fact that Infinite belongs to the same series does not make its campaign cooperative, and the presence of multiplayer in the original BioShock 2 does not carry across to it.

For a buyer comparing the games, this is not a case of choosing between two different multiplayer designs. The comparison is asymmetrical: one older release had a separate multiplayer mode, while Infinite had no released multiplayer mode at all.

Why BioShock: The Collection is the common source of confusion

The collection is centered on single-player content

The official 2K store describes BioShock: The Collection as the three games’ single-player content. Check the collection description on 2K’s store. The collection announcement is even more explicit: “Multiplayer will not be included.” Read the collection announcement.

As a result, the collection is suitable for someone who wants the BioShock, BioShock 2 and BioShock Infinite campaigns in one package, but it is the wrong purchase if your main reason is the original BioShock 2 multiplayer mode.

Remastered does not mean every original feature returned

The remastered BioShock 2 included with the collection should not be treated as a complete reissue of every component of the original release. The omitted multiplayer mode is the key exception relevant to this question. A newer presentation and a bundled campaign do not change the collection’s scope.

This is why edition names matter more than the franchise name. “BioShock 2,” “BioShock 2 Remastered” and “BioShock: The Collection” can sound interchangeable in a store search, but they do not represent the same feature set.

What to buy, depending on what you want to do

Your priority Best match from the documented options What to avoid assuming
Play the original Rapture-set multiplayer mode Investigate the original BioShock 2 release for your exact platform and edition. Do not substitute the remastered edition or collection without checking; the collection omits multiplayer.
Play all three campaigns BioShock: The Collection. Do not expect its BioShock 2 component to include multiplayer.
Play BioShock Infinite with a friend No released BioShock product option documented here provides that feature in Infinite. Do not confuse online platform features or local sharing with an actual co-op mode.
Experience BioShock lore connected to Rapture’s fall The original BioShock 2 multiplayer has that setting and premise. Shared setting does not turn the mode into a cooperative campaign.

Edition and platform checklist before you purchase

  1. Read the full product title. Look for the original BioShock 2 release rather than “Remastered” or “The Collection” if the multiplayer mode is your reason for buying.
  2. Verify the platform. A feature listed for one platform or edition should not be assumed to apply to another. The original Steam listing is evidence of how that product was advertised, not proof that every console release has identical access.
  3. Check the feature list, not only the cover art. Confirm that the listing explicitly mentions multiplayer and identify whether it is the original product or a remastered package.
  4. Separate historical inclusion from current access. A product page can document that a mode shipped without proving that matchmaking is active today.
  5. Buy the collection for campaigns. If you want the three single-player games, the collection is aligned with that goal; its official materials say multiplayer is excluded.
  6. Keep purchase records and edition names. If a store bundles several BioShock products, record the exact edition and platform so you can distinguish an original release from the remastered one later.

Can you still play the original multiplayer online?

The available product descriptions establish that the original BioShock 2 included multiplayer, but they do not establish current server operation, matchmaking activity or an active player population for any particular platform. Historical inclusion is not evidence that online matches will connect in 2026.

Before spending money specifically for online play, check the platform store’s current service information, recent player reports and any publisher support notice for that platform. Those checks are separate from confirming which edition contains the mode. Do not treat an old listing as a guarantee of functioning lobbies.

If a seller advertises the collection as a way to play BioShock 2 multiplayer, that conflicts with the collection announcement and should be treated as a listing error until corrected. The documented collection feature set excludes multiplayer.

Common misconceptions, corrected

Misconception Correction
“BioShock 2 multiplayer” means two players can run the story together. The original mode is described as a separate multiplayer experience, not co-op campaign play.
Every version of BioShock 2 includes the same features. The original release and the remastered/collection versions differ; the collection omits multiplayer.
BioShock Infinite must have co-op because it is a later series game. Infinite has no released multiplayer mode.
If a store page once advertised multiplayer, servers must still be active. The listing confirms historical product features, not current matchmaking or population.
The collection’s three games imply all three games’ extras are bundled. The collection is presented as single-player content, with multiplayer expressly excluded.

How the terminology affects your buying decision

If you want a cooperative story night

Do not buy any of the documented BioShock options expecting a two-person campaign. The original BioShock 2 mode is not described as shared story progression, and BioShock Infinite has no released multiplayer. The collection likewise does not add a co-op layer to its campaigns.

If you want competitive BioShock combat

The original BioShock 2 is the relevant product because it is the one documented as having a distinct multiplayer experience. Confirm the exact edition and investigate present-day online access separately; the available sources do not establish that matches remain available on your platform.

If you want the complete single-player series

BioShock: The Collection is the straightforward choice documented for the three campaigns. Its omission of multiplayer is not a defect if your goal is single-player play, but it is decisive if you are shopping for the original online mode.

What the official descriptions do—and do not—tell us

The official descriptions support four firm conclusions: the original BioShock 2 had a Rapture-set multiplayer experience; its premise involved Plasmid test subjects and progression with weapons, Plasmids and Tonics; BioShock Infinite had no released multiplayer; and BioShock: The Collection excluded BioShock 2 multiplayer.

They do not establish a current player count, a current server status, exact match formats, map totals, platform-by-platform compatibility or a guaranteed way to find opponents today. Those details can change independently of the edition’s historical feature list, so they should be verified for the platform and date on which you intend to play.

Bottom line for the “co-op vs. multiplayer” question

The original BioShock 2 had multiplayer, but it was a separate Rapture-set shooter experience rather than co-op campaign play. BioShock Infinite has no released multiplayer. BioShock: The Collection includes the single-player games and specifically leaves out BioShock 2 multiplayer. Choose the original release only if that historical mode is your target, and confirm current online availability before assuming you will find a match.
