A BIOS Power-On Self-Test (POST) error means the firmware could not initialize one or more essential hardware components before the operating system started. The fastest fix is to identify whether the computer has no power, power but no display, or display but no boot, then use the motherboard’s exact beep code, debug LED label, or hexadecimal code to isolate the failing subsystem. POST indications are manufacturer-specific, so a code that means memory failure on one board can mean something else on another.
What POST checks and what a failure looks like
POST runs immediately after you press the power button. Firmware checks that the processor, memory, graphics path, power rails and other hardware needed to reach firmware setup can initialize. Intel describes POST codes and beep codes as visual and audio cues that a motherboard manufacturer uses to communicate the results of internal hardware tests. AMD similarly defines POST as diagnostic tests performed at power-on to verify that required hardware is connected and functioning.

POST happens before Windows, Linux or another operating system loads. Software installed on the drive therefore cannot repair a failure that stops the machine before firmware setup. A system can appear dead even though the problem is only a loose power connector, or it can turn on with fans spinning while failing before any video signal is produced.

No power
There are no fans, lights or other signs of startup. Start with the wall outlet, power strip, PSU rocker switch and AC cable. Then check the motherboard’s 24-pin connector, the CPU’s 4- or 8-pin power connector near the processor socket, and any required graphics-card power plugs. A no-power symptom is a power-delivery investigation, not a beep-code investigation.

Power on, no display
Fans or LEDs run, but the monitor remains blank and firmware setup never appears. This is the classic POST troubleshooting case. Memory, graphics initialization, CPU support, a wrong display input or a cable connected to the wrong video output can all produce it.
Display appears, but boot does not complete
You can see a logo, firmware screen or error message, but the machine does not start the operating system. POST has progressed far enough for video and basic hardware initialization. Check boot-device detection, storage connections and boot order after hardware POST issues have been ruled out.
Read every diagnostic signal before changing parts
Write down the exact symptom and every signal. Record whether a light is labeled CPU, DRAM, VGA or BOOT; note the color and whether it stays on or cycles. For beeps, record the rhythm, number of short and long tones, and whether the sequence repeats. For a two-digit or four-digit display, record the code at which the sequence consistently stops.
Use the manual for the exact motherboard or computer model. Intel cautions that manufacturers use different code systems. The same three-digit hexadecimal value, beep rhythm or LED label cannot safely be interpreted from a generic internet chart. If the manual lists a code as a broad category such as memory or video, treat it as a direction for testing rather than proof that a particular component is defective.

Run a minimum-configuration POST test
Reducing the machine to only the hardware required to enter firmware setup removes variables. MSI’s general procedure is to test with the CPU, CPU cooler, one memory stick, power supply and monitor. Disconnect storage drives, USB devices, expansion cards and accessories that are not needed for a display. Leave the motherboard outside the case only if you suspect a case short and can work safely; otherwise keep the board installed and avoid touching energized components.
- Shut down completely. Turn off the PSU, unplug AC power and hold the case power button for several seconds to discharge residual power. Follow the board manual’s safety guidance.
- Verify core power. Reseat the 24-pin motherboard plug and the CPU 4/8-pin plug. Do not confuse a CPU/EPS plug with a PCIe graphics plug; they are keyed differently and are not interchangeable.
- Keep only one memory module. Remove all but one DIMM and install it in the slot specified for single-module operation in the manual, often a slot away from the CPU socket. Do not assume the recommended slot is the same on every board.
- Connect cooling correctly. The CPU cooler must be mounted, and its fan should be connected to the header identified for the CPU fan. Some firmware stops when it cannot detect a CPU-fan signal.
- Connect a known-good display path. Attach the monitor to the graphics output that matches the active hardware. If a discrete graphics card is installed, its outputs are normally used; motherboard video outputs work only when the CPU provides integrated graphics and the firmware supports that path.
- Power on and observe. Watch the LEDs, listen for beeps and note the final display code. If setup opens, power down and reconnect one removed device at a time until the failure returns.
Fix DRAM or memory POST indications
A DRAM light, memory-related beep or code means the board did not complete memory initialization. It does not prove that every DIMM is bad. A module may be loose, installed in the wrong channel, incompatible with the current settings or unable to train at the selected speed.
- Switch off AC power and reseat the DIMM. Press evenly until both retaining latches engage, where the board uses latches on both ends.
- Test one stick at a time in the manual’s recommended slot. AMD specifically recommends testing each memory stick separately and trying different slots.
- Repeat the test with the other module and, if necessary, another slot. A result that follows one stick points toward that module; a result that follows one slot points toward the board or socket channel.
- After a successful start, enter firmware setup and load default or safe memory settings. Re-enable performance profiles only after the system completes repeated cold starts.
Allow a first boot after a memory change to take longer than usual while the firmware trains memory. If the board repeatedly stops at DRAM with every module and slot combination, inspect the CPU socket for bent contacts and verify that the cooler is not applying uneven pressure; the memory controller is commonly integrated into the processor.

Fix VGA, graphics and no-video indications
A VGA light or video-related beep means the graphics path was not detected or initialized. First reseat the graphics card in its PCIe slot and reconnect every auxiliary PCIe power plug required by that card. Check that the monitor is set to the correct input and test a different cable or monitor if available.

Try the motherboard’s display output only when the processor actually includes integrated graphics. Many CPUs have no onboard graphics, in which case the motherboard connector cannot produce an image regardless of firmware settings. If the discrete card has several outputs, try another output on the card. Remove riser cables and adapters during the minimum test because they can add a connection failure.
Lenovo’s ThinkCentre documentation gives a model-specific example: two long beeps followed by three short beeps indicates a video card or onboard video that was not detected. That mapping applies to the documented ThinkCentre systems, not to other motherboards. Treat any beep chart the same way: verify the exact model before acting on it.
Fix CPU-related POST indications
A CPU LED or processor error can result from missing CPU power, an improperly installed processor, socket damage, a disconnected cooler fan or firmware that predates support for the installed CPU.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Reseat the CPU power connector and confirm that the PSU cable is labeled for CPU/EPS use.
- Check that the processor is oriented correctly and that no socket contacts are bent or contaminated. Never force the retention mechanism.
- Confirm that the cooler is mounted evenly and that its fan is connected to the CPU-fan header.
- Look up the processor’s minimum supported BIOS version on the motherboard manufacturer’s CPU-support list. MSI and AMD both warn that some processors require a particular BIOS version before the system can POST.
If the board supports a no-CPU BIOS-flash feature, follow its exact procedure and file naming requirements. Otherwise, a newly purchased CPU may need an older supported processor installed temporarily so the BIOS can be updated. Never flash firmware intended for a different model or revision; a wrong image can leave the board unable to start.

Clear CMOS carefully, then retest
Incorrect memory timings, overclocking values or a changed boot setting can prevent POST. Clear the CMOS only using the method documented for your board: a designated jumper, rear-panel button or removable battery procedure. Turn off the PSU and disconnect AC power first, and observe any required wait time. After clearing, the firmware will return to defaults, so you may need to restore the date, boot order, fan curves and other settings.
Do not clear CMOS as a substitute for checking cables and seating. It cannot repair a physically damaged DIMM, GPU, socket or power supply, and repeated resets can obscure the original code you needed for diagnosis.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand beep codes and debug displays
Beep diagnostics require a motherboard speaker or buzzer connected to the board’s speaker header, where that header exists. ASUS notes that buzzer-based diagnosis can report CPU, memory, power-supply and motherboard connection faults, as well as CPU-fan, temperature and voltage problems. A silent board does not necessarily mean there is no fault: many modern boards ship without a speaker, and some cases do not include one.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Example documented pattern | Meaning in the cited system | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Three short, then one long beep | Memory not detected on Lenovo ThinkCentre examples | Use the ThinkCentre manual, then test one DIMM and different slots |
| Two long, then three short beeps | Video card or onboard video not detected on Lenovo ThinkCentre examples | Check the graphics path, auxiliary power and the correct display output |
These examples are not universal standards. If a board has a built-in hexadecimal display, ASRock explains that codes can change normally while POST progresses. The useful clue is a code that consistently freezes at the same point after repeated cold starts. If there is no onboard display, Intel identifies a PCIe POST test card as an option for displaying firmware codes.

Choose the right diagnostic tool
| Approach | Best use | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Onboard debug LEDs | Fast subsystem-level indication on boards with CPU, DRAM, VGA and BOOT labels | Labels and meanings vary; a lit LED may identify the stage, not the failed part |
| Onboard hexadecimal display | Tracking POST progress and a repeatable stopping code | Requires the exact code table for that model; changing codes during startup are normal |
| Speaker or buzzer | Audible diagnostics on boards with a speaker header | Patterns are manufacturer-specific and no sound is possible without a connected buzzer |
| PCIe POST diagnostic card | Boards without onboard displays, when the expansion slot exposes meaningful POST signals | Check interface compatibility and whether the board routes usable codes to the slot |
| Part substitution | Confirming a suspected DIMM, GPU or PSU after isolation tests | Requires a known-good compatible component; swapping parts first can waste money |
A PCIe POST diagnostic card, also called a motherboard POST test card or POST code reader, is the most direct general-purpose hardware tool when no onboard display exists. Verify the card’s slot/interface compatibility and read its instructions before buying. It cannot make an incompatible board expose a meaningful code.
Common mistakes that make POST diagnosis harder
- Using a generic beep chart: A code from another manufacturer or model can send you to the wrong component.
- Testing all memory at once: Multiple DIMMs hide whether the fault follows a module or a slot. Use one stick first.
- Plugging the monitor into the wrong output: A motherboard video connector is inactive when the CPU lacks integrated graphics, while a discrete card may be required.
- Forgetting auxiliary power: A seated GPU without its PCIe power cable can still produce a VGA indication.
- Updating the wrong BIOS: Model and board revision must match exactly. An incorrect image can prevent recovery.
- Replacing parts before isolation: A DRAM light can be caused by socket contact or CPU memory-controller problems, and a VGA light can be caused by power or cabling.
- Interpreting a transient code as a failure: POST codes normally change as each stage runs. Repeatedly stopping at one code is more significant than a code seen briefly.
When replacement is justified
Replace a component only after the minimum-configuration tests identify a repeatable fault. A memory module that fails in multiple known-good slots while another module works is a reasonable replacement candidate. A graphics card that fails with verified power, cables and a known-good display path is more suspect than one that has only produced a single VGA light. A power supply should be considered only after checking connectors and, where possible, testing with a known-good unit of adequate capacity and the correct cable set.
If every DIMM, graphics path and supported CPU configuration fails at the same stage, the motherboard becomes more likely, especially when the socket shows damage or the board has visible burn marks. Stop testing hardware that smells burned, overheats immediately or repeatedly shuts down; disconnect AC power and seek qualified service.
Prevent future POST failures
- Keep the motherboard manual and CPU-support list available for the exact model and revision.
- Record the original BIOS version and stable settings before changing memory profiles or updating firmware.
- Install DIMMs in the recommended paired slots and avoid mixing kits with different specifications.
- Route CPU and GPU power cables directly from the PSU according to the manufacturer’s cable labels.
- After a hardware upgrade, perform a cold-start test and confirm that the system can repeatedly enter firmware setup before reconnecting drives and accessories.
POST errors are diagnostic signposts, not automatic proof that a part has failed. Separating power, display and boot symptoms, reducing the machine to CPU, cooler, one DIMM, power supply and monitor, and following the exact model’s code documentation resolves the majority of misdiagnoses without unnecessary replacements.
