Biodiesel’s life-cycle impact depends on what it is made from and how it is processed. A GREET-based study of five feedstocks found baseline greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions of 11.90–32.15 g-CO₂eq per MJ of biodiesel, with waste-derived feedstocks lowest in the model. But a lower climate impact did not guarantee lower emissions of every air pollutant.

How sustainable is biodiesel?

There is no single sustainability score for biodiesel. The answer changes with the feedstock, the energy used in processing, and the supply-chain stages included in the calculation. It also depends on whether “sustainable” means lower life-cycle GHG emissions or a broader set of air-quality impacts.

A study by Koh, Choe, Kim, Kim, and Lee compared five pathways in a harmonized Well-to-Tank life-cycle assessment using GREET. Its results describe modeled supply chains under the study’s assumptions—not every biodiesel plant, geography, or vehicle-use condition. The paper, “Decarbonizing biodiesel supply chains: a GREET-based life cycle assessment with Scope 1–3 emissions and best-case mitigation,” appeared online July 1, 2026, according to Chonnam National University. The journal lists it in Applied Energy, Volume 422, with an issue date of November 1, 2026. The publisher’s article page gives the study details and abstract.

Which biodiesel feedstocks have lower life-cycle emissions?

The assessment compared three plant-based oils—soy, carinata, and palm—with two waste-derived feedstocks: used cooking oil (UCO) and beef tallow. Across those five modeled pathways, the publisher abstract reports baseline GHG emissions spanning 11.90–32.15 g-CO₂eq/MJ-biodiesel. The university summary identifies the waste-derived pathways as the lowest-emitting overall and carinata as the lowest-emitting plant-based option.

That ordering is specific to the assessed pathways and boundaries. The plant-based pathways included farming, extraction, refining, transportation, and indirect land-use change (ILUC). The waste-derived pathways included rendering, extraction, and refining; overseas imports and long-distance international transport were excluded. Those exclusions matter when considering imported UCO or tallow, because the reported comparison does not account for those transport stages.

Feedstock group Pathways assessed What the study reports
Plant-based oils Soy, carinata, and palm Carinata had the lowest modeled GHG emissions among the plant-based options; the university summary attributes this in part to avoiding ILUC emissions.
Waste-derived feedstocks Used cooking oil and beef tallow These pathways had the lowest modeled GHG emissions overall in the comparison.

The study frames emissions using Scopes 1, 2, and 3: direct production emissions, indirect emissions from energy use, and major upstream and downstream processes, respectively. In the university’s summary, Scope 3 farming was the largest GHG contributor for plant-based pathways. For waste-derived pathways, Scope 1 emissions together with Scope 3 refining were dominant. Chonnam National University’s study summary describes these stage contributions and the modeled pathway boundaries.

Why lower GHG emissions do not mean lower air pollution

The assessment also quantified volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), fine particulate matter (PM2.5), black carbon (BC), and primary organic carbon (POC). Its abstract cautions that a pathway with lower GHG intensity does not necessarily have lower emissions of every pollutant.

Carinata illustrates the distinction: although it had the lowest modeled GHG emissions among the plant-based feedstocks, the university summary says it had the highest VOC and CO levels among the pathways. A climate-only ranking therefore cannot answer which option is best for every air-quality concern.

How much could mitigation change the modeled result?

The publisher abstract reports best-case GHG reductions of approximately 66–352% relative to baseline. The upper end includes modeled net-negative outcomes for waste-derived pathways paired with renewable energy inputs in processing. A reduction above 100% means the scenario’s modeled emissions fall below zero relative to the study’s baseline comparison; it is not evidence that ordinary commercial biodiesel production removes carbon from the atmosphere.

Chonnam National University quotes Professor Boreum Lee describing reductions of up to 346–352% for waste-derived pathways using renewable processing inputs, relative to their own conventional-input production baselines. These are best-case scenarios, not a universal result for every facility or supply chain. The percentage should be read with its scenario and baseline attached, rather than as a standalone emissions value.

How certain are the comparisons?

The researchers used Monte Carlo analysis to test how modeled emissions changed when inputs were varied. The university summary reports wider emissions ranges for plant-based pathways and narrower ranges for waste-derived pathways. The publisher abstract says the analysis found the feedstock emissions hierarchy to be robust across perturbation levels.

That robustness applies within the study’s modeled input ranges and assumptions. It does not remove uncertainty associated with different sourcing regions, farming practices, land-use effects, processing energy, or transport arrangements that were not represented by the assessed pathways.

What the study can—and cannot—tell decision-makers

The comparison supports a conditional conclusion: feedstock choice and production inputs can substantially change modeled biodiesel life-cycle GHG emissions, while pollutant profiles may move differently from the climate ranking. Its Well-to-Tank boundary is useful for comparing specified supply chains, but it is not a direct measurement of emissions from commercial fleets and should not be read as a complete assessment of end-use impacts.

For procurement or policy decisions, the relevant question is not simply whether a fuel is biodiesel. It is whether the actual pathway uses a feedstock and processing system represented by the comparison, what sourcing and transport stages are included, and which outcomes—GHGs, air pollutants, or both—are being prioritized.
