Bing AI Search Privacy: What Data Bing Collects and How to Manage It (2026)

Short answer: Bing records the search terms you submit and may also collect your IP address, location, cookie or similar identifiers, search date and time, and browser configuration. Depending on the feature, Bing can process typed text, voice, or images. You can review and clear search terms and clicked results in Bing Settings or the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard when signed in; searches made while signed out are managed separately on that device. Deletion does not guarantee that every de-identified log or backup copy disappears immediately.

What Bing collects when you search

Microsoft Support says Bing collects the terms you provide together with technical and contextual information. Microsoft’s Privacy Statement describes additional input types and explains what happens when you follow a result to another site.

Search terms and technical context

  • The query itself: the words, numbers, symbols, or other text submitted to Bing.
  • IP address and location: information Microsoft lists as part of Bing search activity.
  • Cookie and similar identifiers: unique identifiers stored in cookies or comparable technologies.
  • Date and time: when the search occurred.
  • Browser configuration: technical browser details sent with the request.

Microsoft Support describes this collection in the following terms: “When you search using Bing, Microsoft collects the search terms you provide, along with other information, such as your IP address and location, the unique identifiers contained in our cookies, the time and date of your search, and your browser configuration.” The statement is a description of Bing’s service data, not a claim that every item is retained forever or tied to your account indefinitely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What each item can reveal

The query text is the content you intentionally submit, but the surrounding fields can add context. An IP address can be used as network information, while location can be used to return locally relevant results. A cookie identifier can distinguish one browser or device from another even when the query text is identical. The time and date establish when a search happened, and browser configuration helps Bing deliver a compatible page or feature. Microsoft lists these categories together, so privacy analysis should consider the complete request rather than only the words in the search box.

Voice, image, and inked input

Bing services can receive more than typed queries. Microsoft’s Privacy Statement says its services process text that is typed or inked, voice data, and images, depending on the feature. If you use voice-enabled Bing, voice input and performance data associated with speech functionality are sent to Microsoft so the speech feature can operate. Image-based search similarly requires the image or image-derived information needed for that feature.

This means the input surface matters. A typed search generally sends text; dictation adds speech-related data; visual search adds an image or information extracted from it. The same account and browser can therefore create different kinds of service data on different visits.

Search suggestions

Suggestions are a separate moment in the search process. Microsoft says characters you type and items you click can be collected to provide suggestions. A suggestion may therefore involve keystrokes or selections made before you submit a complete query; do not assume that only the final search phrase is relevant to the suggestion system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you type a sensitive phrase and then abandon it, the typed characters may still have been part of the suggestion interaction. That does not establish that every abandoned character is stored indefinitely, but it does explain why a privacy review should include autocomplete and suggestion behavior rather than focusing solely on submitted searches.

What the destination website receives

When you select a result or advertisement and open its destination, that website receives ordinary browser-request information. Microsoft lists examples such as your IP address, browser type and language, and the referring site hostname. This is distinct from data Bing itself collects. Clearing Bing history cannot retroactively erase request data already received by a destination website; that site has its own privacy policy and retention practices.

There are consequently two separate records to consider: Bing’s search-service record and the destination’s visit record. Removing a clicked result from Bing’s history addresses the first user-facing history, not the second site’s server logs, cookies, analytics systems, or account records.

How Bing AI features differ from ordinary search

“Bing AI search” can refer to more than one data flow. The privacy treatment depends on whether you are using Bing or Copilot Search directly, or whether Microsoft Copilot is generating a web query to ground an answer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Situation Input sent toward Bing Identifiers and controls described by Microsoft
Standard Bing search The query and related service data, such as IP address, location, identifiers, time, and browser configuration. Review and clear history in Bing Settings or, for signed-in personal accounts, the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard.
Copilot Search in Bing An AI-enhanced Bing search experience that reviews and summarizes web results; collection is consistent with Bing’s core web-search offering. Use Bing’s search-history controls. Do not treat Copilot Search as having the separate enterprise-query commitments described for Microsoft 365 web grounding.
Microsoft Copilot or Copilot Chat with web search enabled Copilot parses the prompt and derives a shorter web query. The full prompt is generally not sent unless it is very short. Microsoft says generated queries are sent without user and tenant identifiers and are covered by specific limits on use. A Web content toggle and, in managed tenants, an administrator policy control whether web search is available.

Why the labels matter

Copilot Search is a Bing feature. Microsoft describes its personal-data collection as consistent with Bing’s core web-search offering. Microsoft Copilot and Copilot Chat web grounding are different: Copilot creates a query from a prompt and sends that derived query to Bing. A familiar “AI” label therefore does not identify one universal retention or advertising rule. Check which product opened the search box and which setting controls it.

What happens when Copilot grounds an answer on the web

Microsoft documents a separate process for web searches generated by Microsoft Copilot and Copilot Chat. Understanding that process prevents a common mistake: applying Copilot’s generated-query protections to every consumer Bing search.

Prompt-to-query conversion

  1. Copilot receives your prompt in the Copilot experience you are using.
  2. It parses the prompt and derives a short query intended for web search.
  3. The entire prompt is generally not included in that query unless the prompt is very short.
  4. Whole Microsoft 365 files, uploaded files, and Microsoft Entra identifiers are excluded from the generated query. Microsoft says the query can sometimes be informed by document content without sending the entire document.

For example, a long request asking Copilot to summarize a project plan may produce a short web-search phrase about a term or fact that needs checking. The full project plan is not simply pasted into Bing as the query. Microsoft’s documentation still allows the derived query to be informed by document content, so “not the whole file” should not be read as “no information from the file can influence the search.”

Identifiers removed before the Bing request

Microsoft says the generated query is sent to Bing with user and tenant identifiers removed. This describes the request created for Copilot web grounding; it does not mean that an ordinary Bing search is anonymous or that your browser ceases to send normal network information.

Use restrictions Microsoft describes

For these generated Copilot web queries, Microsoft documents commitments that the queries are not used to improve Bing, create advertising profiles, track behavior, be shared with advertisers, or train generative-AI foundation models. Microsoft 365 documentation distinguishes the generated web query from Copilot prompts and responses, which it says remain within Microsoft 365 unless the customer directs otherwise.

These commitments are scoped to the generated-query feature and its documented Microsoft 365 or Copilot context. They should not be generalized to all searches typed into Bing, to Copilot Search in Bing, or to every consumer Copilot data setting. They also do not change what a destination website can receive if you open a result from the answer.

Personal Bing versus organizational Copilot web grounding

The most useful comparison is not “old search versus new AI.” It is the context in which the query is created and governed.

Comparison point Personal Bing or Copilot Search Microsoft Copilot/Copilot Chat web grounding
Starting input A search phrase, typed or entered through a Bing feature; voice and image inputs are possible. A prompt from which Copilot derives a shorter web query.
What is sent toward Bing The submitted query plus the service and technical context Microsoft lists for Bing. The derived query; the full prompt is generally not included, and whole files and Entra identifiers are excluded.
Identifiers Bing’s documented collection includes IP address, location, cookies or similar identifiers, time, and browser configuration. Microsoft says user and tenant identifiers are removed from the generated query.
Use limits Microsoft describes the ordinary Bing collection model and history controls. Microsoft documents no use for Bing improvement, ad profiling, behavioral tracking, advertiser sharing, or foundation-model training for generated queries.
Main controls Bing Settings and the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard for applicable history. The Web content toggle, plus the Allow web search in Copilot administrator policy in managed Microsoft 365.

This table is a scope guide, not a promise that one product has no logs. It identifies which published controls and commitments apply to each flow.

Signed in with a personal Microsoft account

  1. Open Bing Settings or the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard while signed in to the Microsoft account used for searching.
  2. Open the search-history area. Review the listed search terms and clicked results.
  3. Select the entries you want to remove, or use the available clear-history command to remove the stored history shown there.
  4. Repeat the check in both places if you use Bing Settings and the dashboard. A deletion view is a record-management control, not proof that every downstream or backup copy has already been overwritten.

The dashboard is for searches associated with the account. If a search was made while you were signed out, it will not appear there merely because you later sign in on the same device.

Searching while signed out

  1. Open Bing Settings on the device and browser where the searches were made.
  2. Find the stored search-history section associated with that device.
  3. Review or clear the entries shown there.
  4. If you use multiple browsers or devices, check each one separately; a device-associated history is not the same as a single account-wide record.

Private-browsing mode, deleting browser history, or signing out does not by itself prove that Bing received no query data. Those actions affect local records or account state, while Bing’s service still has to process a request you submit.

After clearing history

Microsoft says clearing search history removes it from the account’s search-history view, but some retained data may be de-identified search logs and limited backup copies may remain temporarily. Treat the command as removal from the user-facing history system, not as an instant, universal purge of all technical records.

If you used several devices

Make a list of the browser and device combinations involved before starting. Signed-in activity can be reviewed through the account-facing controls, while signed-out activity is associated with the device and browser where it occurred. Clearing one device’s stored history does not establish that another device’s local or device-associated entries were cleared.

How to control Copilot web search separately

Web content toggle

In Copilot experiences that expose it, the Web content toggle controls whether Copilot can use web content to help answer a prompt. Turning web content off prevents that Copilot interaction from using web grounding, but it does not erase previous Bing history or Copilot conversations.

Microsoft 365 administrator policy

In a managed Microsoft 365 environment, an administrator can use the Allow web search in Copilot policy. If the administrator disables web search, users cannot turn the Web content toggle back on. If the control is unavailable or locked, contact the organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator rather than changing personal Bing history settings.

Consumer Copilot history and training controls

Consumer Copilot conversation history, personalization settings, and model-training choices are separate from Bing search history. Microsoft says eligible signed-in users can opt out of using future conversation activity for model training, while its FAQ identifies categories and markets excluded from training. Deleting Bing searches does not change Copilot conversation history, personalization, or training settings; manage each control in the Copilot account experience where it is offered.

Policy statement What it means in practice
Up to 18 months for identifiers linkable to an account or device to personalize search Microsoft says it no longer uses cookies and other account- or device-linkable identifiers to personalize search after 18 months. This is a policy duration, not a guarantee that every identifier disappears exactly on day 18 months.
Up to 5 years for authenticated-user data Microsoft says authenticated users’ data may be retained for up to five years to improve products and services, with sensitive information removed and safeguards applied first. “Up to” describes a maximum stated period, not the retention time for every search.
Backups and de-identified logs Cleared records may persist in limited backup copies for a time, and Microsoft says de-identified search logs may not be deleted by the history-clearing action.

These figures are Microsoft Support’s current search-history guidance, accessed in October 2026. They are not population statistics or a measurement of how often any particular user’s searches are retained.

The practical distinction is between visibility, personalization, and technical retention. A record can disappear from the history list while a de-identified log remains for service purposes; an identifier may stop being used for personalization after 18 months while authenticated-user data may remain under the stated five-year limit. None of these statements means that every field is retained for the maximum period.

Privacy decisions that prevent common mistakes

Do not confuse history deletion with destination-site deletion

Removing a query from Bing’s history does not remove information already sent to a website you visited from a result or advertisement. That destination received its own browser request and controls its own records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat signed-out searches as account searches

A later sign-in does not retroactively place every device-associated search into the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard. Use Bing Settings on the original device and browser to handle signed-out history.

Do not apply enterprise Copilot promises to ordinary Bing

The no-ad-profiling, no-behavioral-tracking, no-advertiser-sharing, and no-foundation-model-training commitments described above concern generated Copilot web queries. Microsoft’s description of standard Bing collection remains broader, including query and technical context.

Do not use browser cleanup as a substitute for service controls

Clearing cookies or local browser history can reduce traces on your device, but it does not provide the account-history review and deletion function offered by Bing Settings or the Privacy Dashboard.

Do not assume “AI” means the prompt is sent verbatim

In Copilot web grounding, Microsoft describes a derived short query rather than routine transmission of the entire prompt. Conversely, do not infer that a derived query has no relationship to the prompt: it can be informed by document content. The safe question is what product created the request and which identifiers and controls Microsoft documents for that product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical checklist for managing Bing privacy

  • Identify which experience you used: standard Bing, Copilot Search in Bing, or Microsoft Copilot with web search.
  • Check whether you were signed in at the time of each search.
  • For a personal account, review both Bing Settings and the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard.
  • For signed-out activity, clear the device-associated history in Bing Settings on every relevant browser and device.
  • Use the Copilot Web content toggle when you do not want a particular Copilot interaction to use web grounding.
  • If the toggle is locked in Microsoft 365, ask the administrator whether the Allow web search in Copilot policy is enabled.
  • Manage Copilot conversation history, personalization, and model-training choices separately from Bing history.
  • Assume that a destination website may retain its own request data after you open a result.
  • Expect deletion to remove user-facing history while limited backups or de-identified logs may remain for a time.
  • Recheck Microsoft’s current settings labels when you return later; product controls can move even when the underlying distinction between account and device history remains.

What to remember

Bing’s documented collection is not limited to the words in the search box: it can include network, location, identifier, timing, browser, suggestion, voice, and image data depending on how you use the service. The correct cleanup path depends on sign-in status, and Copilot’s generated web-query protections are a distinct Microsoft 365/Copilot data flow. Review the current Bing Settings, Microsoft Privacy Dashboard, and Copilot controls whenever Microsoft changes their labels or location.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Bing save everything I type, even if I do not press Enter?

Microsoft says characters typed and clicked items may be collected to provide search suggestions. That means autocomplete activity can matter separately from a submitted query, although the statement does not say that every abandoned character is retained forever.

Will clearing Bing history delete my Copilot conversations?

No. Bing search history, Copilot conversation history, personalization, and model-training choices are separate controls. Manage Copilot conversations in the Copilot account experience.

Are Copilot web searches anonymous?

Microsoft says generated web queries are sent to Bing without user and tenant identifiers in the documented Copilot web-grounding flow. This does not make ordinary Bing searches anonymous or remove normal network information from your browser.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can my employer turn off Copilot web search?

In managed Microsoft 365 environments, an administrator can disable the Allow web search in Copilot policy. When disabled, users cannot re-enable the Web content toggle.

How long does Bing keep search data?

Microsoft says identifiers linkable to an account or device are no longer used to personalize search after 18 months, and authenticated-user data may be retained for up to five years for product improvement with safeguards. These are policy limits, not a guarantee for every record.

Does deleting a Bing search remove it from a website I visited?

No. The destination website receives its own browser-request data, such as IP address, browser type and language, and referring hostname, and controls its own retention.

The Bottom Line

Bing can collect query text plus IP address, location, identifiers, timing, browser configuration, suggestion activity, and feature-specific voice or image data. Use Bing Settings or the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard according to your sign-in status, and treat Copilot web-search controls as separate. Clearing history removes the visible history but may not immediately remove de-identified logs or limited backups.
