Big Walk vs. It Takes Two: Which Co-op Adventure Is Right for You?

Choose Big Walk if your group wants open-ended online exploration, communication-led puzzles, crossplay, and room for two to 12 players. Choose It Takes Two if exactly two people want a tightly directed, story-led adventure that mixes platforming, puzzles, and action sequences. Neither game offers a meaningful single-player mode, but they serve very different kinds of cooperative play.

The key difference is the shape of the co-op experience

Big Walk is built around a group of friends discovering solutions together. Its spaces encourage wandering, observation, experimentation, and conversation rather than pushing every player from one authored set piece to the next. The game is designed to be played online by the same group over multiple sessions, with a handcrafted beginning, middle, and end.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

It Takes Two is a two-person action-adventure with a directed campaign. Its cooperation is expressed through coordinated platforming, puzzle solving, and action scenes that change frequently as the story progresses. You follow a designed sequence of challenges instead of treating the world as a social playground.

That difference matters more than graphics, release date, or the presence of puzzles. Decide whether your group wants a shared sandbox for talking and exploring or a focused campaign that constantly assigns both players a role.

Big Walk: what you are actually getting

Open-ended exploration for a continuing group

House House describes Big Walk as a long-form cooperative adventure intended to be played start-to-finish with friends. A session does not need to contain the whole experience; the design assumes that the same people may return over several evenings. The world has a handcrafted beginning, middle, and end, but the route between those points is deliberately social and exploratory.

The game supports two to 12 players in an online session. That range makes it suitable for a pair, a small circle of friends, or a larger community group without requiring separate versions of the game for different party sizes. It does not provide random matchmaking, so you need to organize the people you want to play with before starting.

Talking is part of the puzzle design

Big Walk’s central mechanic is communication. Its official description calls it “entirely about teamwork and talking,” and that is more specific than simply saying that the game has co-op. Players can use proximity voice chat, text chat, gestures, walkie-talkies, laser pointers, binoculars, megaphones, flares, and whiteboards to coordinate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Proximity is intentional. A teammate’s voice can fade as they move away, echo in a corridor, or become muffled behind a wall. Text chat follows the same distance and obstruction rules rather than acting as a global fallback channel. A group may need to move closer, find a better sightline, use a tool, or relay information through another player. That makes communication itself part of the problem-solving process.

This design rewards players who enjoy explaining what they see, testing an idea aloud, and dividing attention across a large space. It can feel less efficient than a conventional party chat, but the loss of perfect communication is the point: the group must create its own shared understanding.

Online-only progression and no couch mode

Big Walk is online-only for meaningful progression. It does not support same-screen couch co-op, so everyone needs a separate device and an online connection. The intended setup is physically separate players using the game’s voice or text systems, with crossplay available between supported platforms.

There is no single-player mode. A person can launch the game alone, but the documented design does not provide a meaningful solo campaign. If one friend drops out, the remaining players should not expect the experience to turn into a conventional single-player adventure.

Platforms and availability

House House’s official FAQ lists Big Walk as released on August 4, 2026 for Windows, Mac, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. The Steam listing confirms online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer for Windows and macOS. A Nintendo Switch 2 digital listing is also verified.

The Steam listing showed a price of $19.99 when checked. Storefront prices can change by region, sale, tax, or date, so treat that figure as a time-specific listing rather than a permanent price.

It Takes Two: what its two-player structure changes

A campaign authored for exactly two people

It Takes Two is designed exclusively for two players. It has no single-player mode, so both participants are essential to the campaign. The cited reference material confirms both local and online co-op, which makes it workable for a couple sharing a screen or for two people playing remotely.

Because the campaign is authored around two players, each person can be assigned a distinct role without accommodating a larger party. The game’s cooperation comes from combining those roles during platforming, puzzles, and action sequences. You are not looking for a route through a broad social space; you are progressing through a sequence of designed encounters.

Directed pacing and frequent mechanical changes

The strongest reason to choose It Takes Two is its structure. It leads both players through story beats, platforming challenges, puzzles, and action set pieces, with the mechanics changing regularly. That gives a pair a clear sense of what to do next and reduces the organizational work required before a session.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Its conventional co-op communication model also makes it easier to coordinate when players are on the same couch or using an external voice call. Communication helps, but distance, walls, and in-world signal loss are not the central challenge in the way they are in Big Walk.

Which game is better for two players?

Pick Big Walk for two when the pair wants freedom

Two people can play Big Walk, and a pair may appreciate having more space to explore than a tightly scripted campaign provides. It is the better fit when both players enjoy getting distracted, testing unusual solutions, and communicating across a changing environment. The two-player minimum does not turn it into a linear two-person adventure; the game still uses the same open-ended, communication-first design intended for larger groups.

Big Walk is also the more flexible choice when the two players use different supported platforms, because crossplay is available. Each person still needs a separate device and an online connection, and the pair must arrange the session themselves because random matchmaking is not provided.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pick It Takes Two for a focused shared campaign

It Takes Two is the clearer choice when both players want a reliable sequence of objectives, story progression, and frequent changes in mechanics. Its exactly-two format avoids the coordination problems that can appear in a larger party: there are only two perspectives to align, and every challenge is designed around that relationship.

Choose it for a couple or two family members who want to sit on the same screen, or for two remote players who prefer an authored adventure over freeform wandering. The local co-op option is a decisive advantage if buying extra devices or arranging separate online setups would be inconvenient.

Which game suits a couple or family?

For couch co-op

It Takes Two is the practical choice because local co-op is supported. Two people can share a screen and communicate naturally in the room. Big Walk is not a couch co-op game: players are expected to be physically separate and connected online, with no same-screen mode.

For a family group larger than two

Big Walk is the only one of these two documented for more than two participants. Its two-to-12-player range can accommodate siblings, friends, or a larger family group, provided every participant has a supported device and an online connection. Because there is no random matchmaking, an adult or group organizer should decide who is playing and set up the session in advance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For players with different accessibility needs

Big Walk includes a broad set of documented options: control rebinding, multiple crosshair styles, hold or toggle controls, field-of-view adjustment on PC and Mac, motion-reduction overlays, text chat, interactive-item highlighting, and the ability to skip any challenge that may be inaccessible. Those tools can make it easier to keep a mixed-ability group together, although the game remains dependent on online cooperation.

The cited material does not provide a comparable accessibility feature list for It Takes Two. That does not establish that a particular option is absent; it means you should verify the settings available on the edition you plan to use before buying for a specific access requirement.

How Big Walk’s communication systems affect play

Proximity voice and text

Players do not automatically have a perfectly clear, global view of what everyone else is saying. Distance, walls, and enclosed spaces can alter both voice and text. A teammate who is out of range may be difficult to hear, while a message sent from behind a barrier can arrive muffled or otherwise limited by the game’s distance model.

Plan around that behavior rather than treating it as a technical fault. Keep a meeting point for regrouping, use a walkie-talkie or megaphone when the situation calls for it, and use visual tools when describing a location would be slower than pointing to it.

Tools for nonverbal coordination

  • Gestures: useful for quick reactions or signaling intent without a full explanation.
  • Laser pointers: identify a distant object or route precisely.
  • Binoculars: inspect landmarks and details before moving toward them.
  • Flares: create a visible signal when players are spread out.
  • Whiteboards: preserve a diagram, instruction, or plan for the group.
  • Walkie-talkies and megaphones: extend or reshape how the group communicates in the environment.

These tools are not merely cosmetic emotes. They support a group that is physically separated inside the game world and make coordination possible when ordinary conversation is intentionally unreliable.

Setup and planning checklist

Before a Big Walk session

  1. Confirm that every player is on Windows, Mac, PlayStation 5, or Nintendo Switch 2 and that the chosen devices can connect online.
  2. Decide who is inviting the group. Big Walk has no random matchmaking, so do not rely on an open public queue to fill empty places.
  3. Check that the party has at least two players and no more than 12.
  4. Agree on a communication plan. Start with in-game proximity voice or text, then decide when to use walkie-talkies, megaphones, whiteboards, or visual signals.
  5. If anyone needs accessibility adjustments, open the control, crosshair, hold/toggle, field-of-view, motion-reduction, highlighting, and text-chat options before beginning.
  6. Schedule enough time to return with the same group over multiple sessions if you want to experience the handcrafted adventure from beginning to end.

Before an It Takes Two session

  1. Confirm that exactly two people will play; the game is not structured for a larger party or a solo campaign.
  2. Choose between local co-op and online co-op based on whether the players will share a screen.
  3. Make sure both players are comfortable with a directed campaign that moves through platforming, puzzles, and action sequences rather than open-ended exploration.
  4. Set up ordinary room or call communication if playing remotely, since the cited material does not describe proximity communication as a core mechanic.

Common mismatches and how to avoid them

Expecting Big Walk to work as a couch game

This is the most straightforward mismatch. Big Walk does not support same-screen co-op. If two people are sitting together and want to share one display, choose the game with documented local co-op instead or prepare separate online devices.

Expecting Big Walk to provide public matchmaking

There is no random matchmaking. A group that wants to play must be assembled manually, which is especially important when planning a session for more than two people. Treat the player limit as a party-planning feature, not as a promise that an empty slot will be filled automatically.

Expecting It Takes Two to accommodate a larger friend group

Its design is for exactly two players. A third person cannot join the same campaign as a normal additional co-op participant. Split a larger group into pairs or choose Big Walk if everyone needs to share one session.

Assuming either game supports a traditional solo campaign

Neither title offers a meaningful single-player mode in the cited material. Buy them for cooperative play, not as games that can be completed alone when a partner is unavailable.

Using the wrong communication expectations in Big Walk

If a teammate seems quiet or a text message is difficult to understand, first check distance and obstructions. The voice and text systems intentionally respond to the game world. Move closer, find a clear route, or use one of the signaling tools before concluding that the session is malfunctioning.

Decision guide by player type

If your priority is… Better fit Why
Playing with three or more friends Big Walk It supports two to 12 online players; It Takes Two is limited to exactly two.
Playing on one shared screen It Takes Two Local co-op is supported; Big Walk has no same-screen mode.

Following a story with clear authored set pieces It Takes Two Its campaign is directed and combines platforming, puzzles, and action sequences.
Playing across supported platforms Big Walk Crossplay is documented.
Using communication as part of the challenge Big Walk Proximity voice and text, plus signaling tools, are central to cooperation.
Skipping a challenge that may be inaccessible Big Walk The official FAQ documents an option to skip any challenge that may be inaccessible.
Playing alone Neither Neither game provides a meaningful single-player mode.

Final buying guidance

Big Walk and It Takes Two are not interchangeable examples of “a co-op adventure.” Big Walk is a social exploration game whose puzzles depend on how players communicate across a shared world. It is the stronger choice for an organized online group, a party that may grow beyond two, or players who enjoy wandering and inventing their own coordination methods.

It Takes Two is a purpose-built two-player campaign. It is the stronger choice for a couple or family pair that wants local couch play, a clear progression path, and a steady sequence of platforming, puzzles, and action encounters. Match the game to the way your group wants to spend time together, not simply to the fact that both games require cooperation.
