How should you compare appliance retailers?
Compare the same model at each retailer and ask for an itemized quote. A lower shelf price may not be the lower-cost purchase once delivery, installation, haul-away, and required parts are included. Confirm price-match exclusions and fees rather than assuming the advertised price will carry through to checkout.

Which retailer has the better delivery and service?
There is no channel-wide guarantee. Big-box retailer websites may help you search local stock and delivery availability, but verify the actual date, delivery window, and who is responsible for the delivery. A specialty retailer may be able to coordinate a more exact delivery time, provide in-house service, or offer a loaner; ask the specific dealer whether it does so and under what conditions.

For an urgent replacement, Consumer Reports recommends starting with an independent dealer and checking whether it can match a big-box price. Ken Miele, CEO of the Appliance Dealers Cooperative, told Consumer Reports: “You’ll get similar-to-exact pricing as a big-box store, but your service is probably going to be better.” That is his assessment, not a promise that every dealer will match a price or provide better service. What do retailer ratings and price negotiations tell you?
Consumer Reports’ large-appliance retailer survey covered 9,721 members and 12,970 purchases made between January 2023 and May 2024. In its article updated November 10, 2025, it identified Abt as its top-rated large-appliance retailer for the 14th year, with RC Willey next. Those results describe surveyed members’ experiences during the stated period; they do not guarantee an individual buyer’s experience or establish the best retailer in every location or for every appliance. Read the Consumer Reports retailer findings as one input alongside the terms offered locally.

It can also be worth asking whether the price is negotiable. Consumer Reports reported in November 2025 that 21 percent of surveyed members tried to negotiate on a large appliance. Of those who tried, 67 percent succeeded, with median savings of $123. These figures describe the survey respondents, not a guaranteed discount; ask politely and compare the final itemized offer.

- What is the earliest confirmed delivery date, and what delivery window will I receive?
- Who will deliver it, and what happens if the delivery is delayed or the appliance arrives damaged?
- What do delivery, installation, haul-away, and required hookup parts cost, and what exactly is included?
- Who handles service after purchase, how do I request it, and does the dealer offer in-house service or a loaner?
- Will you match a competitor’s price? Are there exclusions, fees, or package conditions?
Choose the offer that best fits your priorities after you have those answers in writing or clearly stated on the order. If speed matters most, start by checking nearby dealer stock and confirmed delivery timing; if convenient inventory search matters more, use the chain’s local availability tools. In either case, decide on the full transaction rather than the headline price.
