Several of the largest U.S. banks reported higher third-quarter 2026 profits than a year earlier, led by JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Wells Fargo. The results were not uniformly strong: some trading and consumer businesses lagged, and executives warned that persistent inflation, high interest rates, fiscal deficits, expensive assets and geopolitical risks could undermine future growth.
What did the big banks earn this quarter?
The first major U.S. bank reports available on October 13, 2026, show year-over-year profit growth at four institutions. Their headline results were:

| Bank | Q3 2026 result | Comparison or detail reported |
|---|---|---|
| JPMorgan Chase | $15.3 billion net income; $5.57 per share | Up from $14.4 billion and $5.07 per share a year earlier; the per-share result missed the $5.93 analyst expectation cited by the Associated Press. |
| Goldman Sachs | $5.29 billion profit; $17.01 per share | Up from $4.1 billion and $12.25 per share a year earlier. AP attributed part of the increase to stronger stock-trading revenue. |
| Citigroup | Profit up 40% year over year | The increase exceeded Wall Street expectations cited by AP, helped by investment-banking and wealth-management revenue. Credit-card division profit was flat. |
| Wells Fargo | $5.95 billion profit; $1.87 per share | Beat the forecasts cited by AP. AP linked recent profit growth partly to removal of the bank’s regulatory asset cap. |
These figures should not be treated as a complete ranking of bank performance. The available reports do not provide a consistently comparable breakdown of net interest income, credit losses, loan growth and every business line for all four banks.
Why can profits rise while executives sound worried?
A bank’s total quarterly profit combines lending, deposits, investment banking, wealth management, trading and consumer-credit results. Those activities respond differently to interest rates and economic conditions. A strong result in one area can outweigh weakness in another, while management still warns that the next quarter or year may be harder.

Trading illustrates the divergence. AP reported stronger stock-trading revenue at Goldman Sachs, but slower bond-trading activity at both Goldman and JPMorgan. Citigroup’s investment-banking and wealth-management revenue improved even as its credit-card profit stayed flat. Those details matter because a higher group total does not mean every customer-facing or market-sensitive operation expanded.
JPMorgan chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon told AP: “The U.S. economy continued to be fueled by strong business investment and ongoing consumer spending.” He followed that positive assessment with a warning: “However, large fiscal deficits, sticky inflation, elevated asset prices, rising interest rates and geopolitical conditions continue to shift under the surface.”
Are higher interest rates good or bad for banks?
They can be both. Higher rates may increase the interest a bank earns on certain loans and securities. They can also raise what banks must pay to retain deposits, reduce demand for new borrowing, pressure bond portfolios and make it harder for borrowers to service variable-rate debt. Trading, investment banking and consumer-credit trends add further differences between institutions.

The Federal Reserve raised its federal-funds target range by 0.25 percentage point on September 16, 2026, leaving it at 3.75% to 4.00%. Its statement said, “Inflation remains elevated,” while also describing domestic spending as resilient and capital investment as robust. That policy setting helps explain why banks can benefit from some interest-rate income today while preparing for weaker loan demand, higher funding costs or additional credit stress later. The available results do not quantify one uniform rate effect across the banks.
Could inflation hurt consumers and bank profits?
Persistent inflation can squeeze household budgets, leaving consumers with less room for discretionary spending and debt repayment. If higher prices remain alongside elevated borrowing costs, credit-card balances and other consumer loans may become more difficult to service. Banks could then face slower demand, higher provisions for potential losses or weaker credit-card profitability.

Inflation can also affect business customers. Companies may postpone investment when financing is expensive or economic forecasts become less certain. Conversely, robust business investment can support loan demand and fee-generating activity, which is why current conditions can look healthy even while executives identify significant downside risks.
What the October 13 snapshot does—and does not—show
- JPMorgan’s year-over-year profit increased, but its reported earnings per share fell short of the analyst expectation cited by AP.
- Goldman’s stock-trading revenue was stronger, while bond trading was slower.
- Citigroup’s investment-banking and wealth-management businesses helped its results; credit-card profit was flat.
- Wells Fargo beat the forecasts cited by AP, with AP associating recent growth partly with removal of its regulatory asset cap.
- The Federal Reserve’s target range was 3.75% to 4.00% after the September 16 decision, and the central bank said inflation remained elevated.
- Bank of America had not reported by October 13. Its scheduled release was October 14, so it is not part of this results snapshot.

The big banks entered Q3 2026 with higher aggregate profits, but the mix was uneven and the outlook is not risk-free. Strong spending and business investment are supporting activity now, while elevated rates, persistent inflation and broader financial risks could pressure consumers, borrowers and bank earnings in future quarters.
