BGMI beginner’s guide: controls, movement, and survival basics

The fastest way to learn BGMI is to survive your first minutes. Land beside a few buildings rather than in the busiest landmark, pick up any weapon immediately, add a helmet, vest and healing items, and keep moving toward the safe circle before its timer expires. Learn a comfortable touch layout in Training, use sound to locate footsteps and vehicles, and take fights from cover instead of standing in the open. This guide turns that loop into repeatable steps for a new player.

What BGMI is and what a beginner should aim for

BGMI is KRAFTON’s officially authorized combat-and-survival mobile game. The official BGMI Help Center and the Google Play listing describe a match in which 100 players parachute onto an island and battle until one player remains. That description explains the objective, but winning is not the only useful early goal. A new player should first learn to reach the first safe zone, collect a sensible kit, recognize where shots come from and disengage from bad fights. Placement and information improve naturally after those habits become automatic.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Each match has the same broad rhythm: choose a drop, search buildings, rotate toward the safe area, fight only when the risk is acceptable, and repeat until the final circles. Maps, themed events and abilities can alter the details, so treat the core loop as a foundation rather than a promise that every mode behaves identically.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Set up before your first serious match

Use a stable connection and readable screen

Download the current game build from your device’s official app store, install any required resource packs, and play on a connection that does not repeatedly switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. A sudden network change can make doors, pickups and enemy movement appear late. Lower graphics or frame-rate settings if the phone becomes hot or stutters; a consistent image is more valuable to a beginner than a short burst of higher visual quality. Keep the screen clean and remove a thick case if it interferes with edge swipes.

Choose audio you can monitor safely

Play at a volume that lets you hear footsteps, doors, gunfire and vehicles without masking real-world sounds. The official App Store tips say that speakers or headphones improve the chance of locating enemies as they move through buildings or use vehicles. Headphones are optional, not a requirement, but they make left-right direction easier to judge in a noisy room. Do not use audio so loud that you cannot hear someone speaking to you or an important alarm.

Start in Training, not in a hot drop

Open the Training area and spend several minutes moving, picking up items, aiming, crouching, going prone, jumping, reloading and opening the map. The goal is to make the buttons familiar enough that you do not stare at the screen when a fight starts. Test every change in Training before using it in a ranked or high-stakes match.

Understand the touch controls

BGMI lets you arrange the on-screen controls, so there is no universally best HUD. Learn what each control does first, then place it where your fingers can reach it without covering the sight picture.

Function Typical location or gesture Beginner use
Movement joystick Left side; drag the virtual stick Walk, sprint and adjust direction. Keep your thumb low enough that it does not block nearby items.
Camera/look area Right side; swipe to turn Scan corners, check behind you and keep looking while crossing open ground.
Fire Right-side button; some layouts also offer a left fire button Fire the weapon. Keep at least one reachable while your movement thumb is active.
Aim or scope Right-side aim/scope button Raise a sight for controlled shots; tap again or use the cancel control to return to hip fire.
Crouch and prone Buttons near movement or action controls Lower your profile, stabilize some shots and use low cover. Do not stay prone in an obvious location.
Jump or vault Action cluster on the right Clear obstacles, enter windows and avoid predictable movement. It is not a substitute for cover.
Reload Weapon/action cluster Reload behind cover or before entering a room; the animation leaves you unable to fire.
Interact or pick up Contextual prompt near an item, door or vehicle Open doors, collect loot, revive teammates and use nearby objects.
Map Small map button, usually top corner Check the safe circle, timer, route and teammate marks without standing still in the open.
Inventory Bag icon Review ammunition, healing, armor and attachments; discard clutter when capacity is tight.

Build a reachable layout

  1. Open the settings menu, enter the controls or customize-controls screen, and choose a HUD editor.
  2. Move the movement joystick, fire, aim/scope, crouch, jump, reload and interact buttons so your thumbs can reach them while holding the phone naturally.
  3. Keep fire and aim close enough to press while moving, but separate them from crouch and jump so an accidental tap does not change your stance.
  4. Make the map and inventory large enough to hit reliably, yet keep them away from the most important sight lines.
  5. Save the layout, enter Training and perform a loop: sprint, turn, aim, fire, reload, crouch, jump, open a door and collect an item.
  6. Play one unranked match, note every missed or mis-triggered button, then make one small adjustment at a time.

Button size, transparency and sensitivity are personal preferences. The authoritative guidance does not establish one objectively best sensitivity value or a universally superior two-, three- or four-finger arrangement, so treat recommendations as experiments rather than rules.

Two-, three- and four-finger layouts

Layout Strengths Trade-offs Who should try it
Two fingers Simple to learn, uncluttered screen and comfortable for short sessions. One thumb often has to move, aim and fire, so simultaneous actions can be slower. Complete beginners who want a low-complexity starting point.
Three fingers Leaves one finger for a fire or aim button while thumbs handle movement and camera. Requires a new grip and careful button spacing. Players who want to aim or fire while moving without adopting a full claw grip.
Four fingers Allows movement, camera, aiming and firing to overlap more easily. Harder to learn, easier to press the wrong control and potentially tiring on a small phone. Players willing to practise regularly and adjust for comfort.
Gyroscope-assisted Tilting the phone can make fine camera corrections faster after practice. Requires calibration, a steady grip and a sensitivity that feels natural. Players who like motion aiming; test it in Training before relying on it.

Compare any layout on five practical axes: can you reach movement and fire/aim together, can you aim while moving, does the HUD hide targets, is it comfortable over a long session, and can you remember the controls under pressure? The layout that scores well for your hands is the right one, even if a streamer uses something different.

Choose a survivable landing

Read the flight path and select a building cluster

At the start, pick a small group of buildings away from the hottest concentration of opponents. You want enough rooms to find a weapon and armor, but enough distance from the crowd to hear and plan. A remote single house can leave you under-equipped; the busiest landmark can force a fight before you understand your controls.

  1. Watch the aircraft route and identify a building area that is not directly beneath the largest group of descending players.
  2. Jump with enough time to steer toward the roofs or open ground beside your chosen buildings.
  3. While descending, look for nearby parachutes. If several players are landing beside you, change to a neighboring building or prepare to contest the first room.
  4. Touch down, enter cover and collect the first usable weapon before searching for ideal attachments.

The official App Store tips recommend landing near buildings, collecting any early weapon, then looking for helmets, vests and healing items. “Any weapon is better than no weapon” is a useful opening rule: survival depends on being able to defend yourself while you improve the loadout.

Loot in an order that keeps you alive

First-minute priority

Priority Take first Why it matters
1 Any functioning weapon and compatible ammunition It gives you a response if another player enters the building. Do not spend the opening minute searching for a perfect model.
2 Helmet and vest Armor reduces the punishment for a mistake and buys time to reach cover.
3 Healing items Medical supplies let you recover after a safe disengagement and prepare for the next rotation.
4 Extra ammunition Carry enough for likely fights, but do not fill the bag so completely that you cannot collect healing or utility.
5 Attachments and a second weapon Improve recoil, capacity or range after the essentials are secure.

Search efficiently

Clear one building methodically, then move to the next instead of zigzagging through the same rooms. Close doors only when doing so helps conceal your route; an open door can also tell you that another player has already searched the building. Keep your camera aimed toward entrances while the pickup prompt is visible. If you hear footsteps, stop looting, switch to the weapon you can use immediately and hold a defensible angle.

When the inventory becomes crowded, discard duplicate attachments or ammunition for weapons you are not carrying. Keep a healing reserve and enough ammunition for at least one fight before chasing upgrades. The map timer is a resource too: perfect loot is not worth arriving late to the safe area.

Move so you are difficult to track

Keep the camera working

Movement is not just the left joystick. Drag the right-side camera continuously in short sweeps while sprinting, especially before crossing a road, hilltop or open field. Check behind you after leaving a building and look toward likely approaches rather than staring at the ground. A moving camera gives you an earlier warning and lets you choose cover before bullets arrive.

Use cover as a route, not a destination

Plan a path from wall to tree to rock, or from one building to the next. Crossing a large open space in a straight line gives an enemy an easy leading point. If you must cross, vary your timing, keep the camera moving and avoid stopping to reload or open the map in the middle of the field. Crouching or going prone can reduce visibility behind low cover, but remaining still in an expected spot makes you easy to pre-aim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide when to sprint, crouch and go prone

  • Sprint: use it between cover and during a planned rotation; release it when you need precise aim or quiet observation.
  • Crouch: use it to lower your profile behind windowsills, ridges or furniture and to steady a short engagement.
  • Prone: use it briefly in grass or behind very low cover when the position is not obvious. It slows your response and can trap you if the zone moves.
  • Jump or vault: use it to clear an obstacle or enter a window, not as constant random movement that destroys your aim.

Vehicles and water

Vehicles cover distance quickly but create a loud, visible signal. Listen for engines before crossing a road and assume a stopped vehicle may indicate another player. Water can sometimes conceal movement, as the official tips note, but it also limits speed and leaves you with fewer options if the shoreline is watched. Treat both as situational tools rather than automatic escapes.

Read the zone and rotate early

Open the map regularly and identify the white safe circle, your position and the countdown. Damage is taken outside the perimeter, so leave before the timer expires rather than waiting for the edge to catch you. A short early rotation is safer than a desperate sprint when the next circle is far away.

  1. After the first loot pass, open the map and find the nearest route into the white circle.
  2. Choose cover along that route: roads for speed, ridges for visibility, buildings for concealment and vehicles only when the distance justifies their noise.
  3. Start moving while you still have time to stop, heal and change direction if you hear a fight.
  4. Check the map again after reaching safety; the next circle may make your current building a poor long-term position.
  5. Leave temporary red-zone bombardment areas instead of hoping a shell misses. Use the warning to reposition behind solid cover.

Do not confuse the white safe circle with the red bombardment warning. The white circle determines where you can remain safely; the red area is a temporary hazard that should be avoided when practical.

Use sound to build a mental map

Footsteps, doors, reloads, gunfire and engines reveal more than a visual glimpse. Headphones or speakers can improve your chance of locating an enemy moving through buildings or using a vehicle, according to the official App Store guidance. Listen before opening the inventory, and stop sprinting for a moment when you need to distinguish nearby movement from distant shots.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn audio into decisions

  • A footstep inside your building means loot can wait; hold a room entrance or move to a safer angle.
  • A door opening nearby suggests a player’s route, but not necessarily their exact floor. Do not push without cover.
  • Repeated shots from one direction can identify a fight to avoid or a third-party opportunity after both sides are weakened.
  • An engine tells you that a rotation is coming; move away from the road or prepare to engage from cover.

Sound is an aid, not proof. Distance, walls, terrain and other effects can mislead you. Combine audio with the kill feed, teammate marks, open doors and your map position before committing.

Take fights on your terms

When you are shot from an unknown direction

  1. Do not spin in the open while searching for the shooter.
  2. Move laterally or backward into the nearest solid cover.
  3. Heal once you are protected and reload if the weapon is not ready.
  4. Use the camera from cover to identify the firing angle, then decide whether to re-engage, flank or rotate away.

This sequence follows the essential survival principle: cover first, information second, damage third. A low-health player who wins one exchange can still lose to the next bullet if they refuse to heal.

Peek, fire and disengage

Expose only the part of your character needed to see and shoot. Fire short, controlled bursts while learning recoil, then return behind cover to reset. If an opponent has a stronger angle, higher ground or a teammate covering you, disengage instead of trading health for pride. A safe rotation can earn a better fight later.

Buildings and open ground

Inside buildings, listen for footsteps, avoid standing directly in doorways and keep an escape route. Outside, never stop in the crest of a hill or the center of a road. Use terrain to break sight lines, and remember that crouching or going prone may hide you briefly but will not make an exposed position safe.

Play the information game with teammates

In squad modes, mark enemy locations and useful loot rather than relying only on voice chat. A clear mark tells teammates where to look and reduces duplicate callouts. Share a building before entering, announce when you are healing or reloading, and move as a group during rotations without stacking in one doorway.

  • Mark the direction and approximate distance of shots.
  • Tell teammates when a building is cleared, only partially searched or still uncertain.
  • Keep enough spacing that one grenade or burst cannot catch everyone.
  • Revive only from cover; a fast revive in the open often creates a second knock.
  • Use the map to confirm that a proposed route remains inside the next circle.

Solo players should apply the same discipline internally: mark a threat mentally, choose an exit and avoid revealing your position for a low-value item.

Version-sensitive features to check before following a mode guide

KRAFTON’s 25 March 2026 v4.3 patch notes describe dynamic transformations on Erangel, Livik and Miramar, passive Medical, Detection, Combat, Vehicle and Scout skills, new traversal features and changes to beginner-phase progression. Those systems can alter where you land, how you rotate and which loot or ability choices matter. Advice about a themed map, a skill or a progression reward should therefore be labeled for the applicable version. Check the latest official patch notes in the game or on KRAFTON’s official channels before treating a specific feature as permanent.

The fundamentals in this guide—weapon first, armor and healing next, sound, cover and early zone movement—remain useful even when a map event changes the route. Event-specific mechanics should be learned in a low-pressure match so that an unfamiliar transformation does not distract you from the circle and nearby footsteps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fair play and responsible sessions

KRAFTON’s Rules of Conduct page, effective 16 July 2026, warns that exploiting bugs or glitches can bring serious penalties, including removal of improperly acquired currency and items. Do not use an exploit, modified client or automation to gain an advantage. Report a reproducible problem through the game’s supported channels and continue playing within the rules.

A practical seven-match learning plan

Matches 1–2: controls and landing

Use an unranked mode. Land near a modest building cluster, collect any weapon, and practise opening the map and inventory without panic. Ignore ambitious fights; your target is a clean first rotation.

Matches 3–4: movement and cover

Choose routes that connect cover. Deliberately scan while sprinting, crouch behind low cover and practise disengaging when shot. Review whether any button is difficult to reach and adjust only one control at a time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Matches 5–6: sound and selective fights

Play with comfortable headphones or speakers. Stop looting when you hear footsteps, identify the likely direction and hold a covered angle. Take a fight only when you know where your escape is.

Match 7: complete the loop

Combine the habits: survivable landing, weapon-first loot, armor and healing, early rotation, camera checks, sound awareness and cover-based engagements. After the match, note one repeatable mistake rather than judging yourself by placement alone.

Common beginner problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
You die before finding a weapon. The landing area is too crowded or looting is too slow. Choose a quieter building cluster, enter the nearest structure and take the first usable weapon.
You cannot fire while moving. Fire and movement controls are too far apart for your grip. Move the fire button or test a three-finger layout in Training.
You lose track of enemies indoors. Looting continues after footsteps or the camera stays pointed at the floor. Stop looting, listen, keep the crosshair near entrances and use cover at a doorway.
You reach the zone late. The map is checked only after the timer is nearly over. Open the map after the first loot pass and rotate while you still have time to change route.
You lose every open-field fight. You stop without a sight-line break. Plan cover-to-cover movement, keep the camera sweeping and avoid opening the map in the field.
Your aim shakes or your phone stutters. High sensitivity, an unfamiliar gyroscope or unstable performance. Return to Training, change one setting, and lower graphics or frame rate if heat causes stutter.
Your bag fills with useless items. Attachments and ammunition are collected without regard to your weapons. Discard incompatible gear and preserve space for healing and ammunition you can use.

Pre-match and in-match checklist

  • Controls are reachable and tested in Training.
  • Audio is clear and safe for your surroundings.
  • Landing area has buildings without the largest enemy concentration.
  • First pickup is a weapon, followed by helmet, vest and healing.
  • Map and timer are checked before the first rotation.
  • Camera sweeps continue while crossing open ground.
  • Cover is reached before healing, reloading or opening inventory.
  • Red bombardment areas are left when practical.
  • Enemy marks and route changes are shared with teammates.
  • No exploit, modified client or unsafe real-world multitasking is involved.

What success looks like for a new player

A good beginner match is not defined only by a win. You are improving when you can land without confusion, arm yourself quickly, reach the safe circle before it closes, identify a threat from sound or marks, retreat to cover after taking damage and make your HUD work for your hands. Keep those measurable goals for several sessions. Eliminations and higher placement follow from surviving long enough to make informed decisions.
