Beyond Proof-of-Work: Hardware Fingerprinting, Proof-of-Antiquity and Physical Proof of Work in Distributed Consensus

Hardware fingerprinting can show that a specific physical object is the one it claims to be. On its own, it does not prove that anyone performed decentralized work, and it does not show how old a device is. The closest consensus-oriented idea in the peer-reviewed literature, proof of physical work (PopW), is still at the laboratory stage, and its authors say it is not a ready-to-launch system.

“Proof-of-antiquity” is a framing term in this title, not the name of an established protocol in the sources discussed here. Those sources instead develop three related concepts: physical unclonable functions (PUFs), physical one-way functions (p-OWFs), and PopW. The sections below explain each one, what it can and cannot establish, and how to judge similar claims.

Start with proof of work and the digital one-way function

A digital one-way function (d-OWF) is a function, such as a cryptographic hash, that is straightforward to compute in one direction and computationally difficult to invert. Proof of work uses that asymmetry. Miners repeat a computation until they find a result that meets a target, and other participants can check a proposed result without repeating the search.

Every alternative discussed below is measured against this baseline. The question is whether a physical process can offer a similar asymmetry, hard to produce and easy to verify, without depending on one object or one central authority.

What is a physical unclonable function?

A physical unclonable function (PUF) is a physical object that returns a characteristic response when it is challenged. Because each object’s response is distinctive, the response can serve as a fingerprint for that object.

The source describes PUFs as commonly used for anti-counterfeiting. In that setting, a verifier stores challenge-response pairs in a central database and checks a presented object against them. The model authenticates an object. It answers the question “Is this the same physical item we enrolled?” It does not answer “Did independent network participants perform verifiable work?”

Why a PUF is not a consensus primitive

  • It depends on a singular object. The check is tied to one physical item, so the trust in the result is tied to that item.
  • Validation is central. The challenge-response pairs sit in a database controlled by whoever runs the verifier.
  • The trust model is different. A consensus primitive has to let many parties agree on a result without trusting a single verifier. A PUF lookup does not do that by default.

What is a physical one-way function?

The paper’s proposed alternative is the physical one-way function (p-OWF). The key shift is from a unique object to a process. A p-OWF is defined by parameters that control a physical process, and that process produces a physical output that can be analyzed.

The authors argue that, for decentralized use, both creating the output and verifying it must be globally independent. In plain terms, no single device, operator or database should be required to produce or check an output.

What is proof of physical work, and what has been tested?

Proof of physical work (PopW) is a conceptual application of p-OWFs to consensus. The paper investigates one example: a pigment-carrier composite that is printed and then analyzed optically.

The experimental setup

The authors print a pigment-carrier composite and analyze it with optical methods. They describe the setup as promising for several properties: unclonability, stability, reproducibility, collision resistance and non-invertibility. These are the authors’ assessment of their own setup, not general guarantees for PUFs or for physical consensus. The paper calls for further work on alternative implementations, on security definitions, and on attempts to challenge the design.

The authors’ own maturity caveat

The authors state:

“Note that this study does not claim to present a ready-to-launch PopW system, but rather exemplify the possibilities and lay the foundation for future work in this uncharted field of research.”

A reader should therefore treat PopW as a research direction. It is not a network that can be joined or a working consensus system.

How the three designs compare

Three questions separate these designs: what resource is costly or scarce, who can create and verify a valid result, and whether a digital shortcut can bypass the physical or computational work. Reproducibility and maturity matter as well. The table applies those questions to the three designs covered so far.

Design Scarce or costly resource Who creates and verifies Digital shortcut Reproducibility Maturity
Proof of work (d-OWF) Digital computation Miners produce a result; peers check the proposed result Not applicable, because the work is itself digital Peers can check the same proposed result Established design; the NIST overview lists it among consensus examples
PUF authentication A unique physical object A verifier checks responses against a central database of challenge-response pairs Not stated in the source Not stated in the source Described as commonly used for anti-counterfeiting
Proof of physical work (p-OWF) A controlled physical process Creation and verification must be globally independent, per the authors’ argument; not demonstrated on a live network Must be addressed; simulation and digital-twin attacks are named as requirements, and the paper calls for further challenge work Reported as promising for the tested setup Laboratory experiment; the authors say it is not ready to launch

The NIST overview is useful background because it places proof of work and proof of stake among several consensus approaches. It does not show that PopW is deployed.

Other hardware-oriented consensus proposals

Two other proposals often get mixed up with physical fingerprinting. They address different design questions.

ProgPoW

ProgPoW is a proposal that aims to use commodity GPU hardware to narrow the efficiency advantage of specialized ASICs. Its EIP page is marked stagnant. It concerns how computational work is designed. It has no link to PUF identity or to p-OWFs.

PoSH

PoSH is a work-in-progress design that stakes computational hardware power to elect a leader. Its question is who gets to lead the chain, not whether a physical object can be verified. It is a separate proposal from the physical-process approach described above.

Why changing the scarce resource does not preserve security guarantees

Formal analyses of ledger protocols, such as the IACR ledger-security paper, define properties like consistency and liveness and state them under assumptions about what an adversary can do. Those guarantees depend on that adversary model. Replacing computation with a physical process changes the model, so the guarantees cannot be assumed to carry over.

A checklist for judging a new claim

  • Is the mechanism a proposal, a laboratory experiment, a standard, or a deployed protocol?
  • Does verification require a unique device, a central database, a trusted hardware vendor, or can any independent participant check the result?
  • Does the design stop digital simulation and digital-twin attacks, not only physical copying?
  • Are results repeatable across independent runs, and are collision behavior and error rates reported?
  • Is the security claim tied to a stated adversary model?
