To take better pictures with a Samsung phone, start with the basics: clean the camera glass, find useful light, choose the right lens, tap to focus, and hold the phone steady. Use Photo mode for most everyday shots, Night mode for dim, mostly still scenes, and Pro mode only when a manual adjustment helps. Expert RAW is an optional route for supported phones and people who plan to edit RAW files. Camera options and menus vary by Galaxy model and software version.

How do I take better pictures with my Samsung phone?

  1. Clean the camera glass. Wipe fingerprints and dust from the lens area; smudges can make glare and light streaks more noticeable. Samsung’s camera troubleshooting guide lists lens cleanliness among image-quality factors.
  2. Look at the light before framing. Favor soft or indirect light when possible. If a bright lamp or the sun is shining toward the lens, shift your position or angle to reduce glare and uneven exposure.
  3. Choose a camera lens for the framing. Use the available ultra-wide or standard camera when it suits the scene instead of relying on heavy digital zoom. Lens options differ by phone.
  4. Focus deliberately. Tap the subject on screen if your Camera app offers tap-to-focus. If the picture remains soft, check focus and shooting distance, and consider whether the subject or phone moved during capture.
  5. Keep the phone still when the scene calls for it. A stable grip helps, especially in low light, when the camera may capture for longer. Take another frame if a moving subject makes the first one uncertain.

For most quick everyday photos, start in Photo mode. Samsung says it automatically adjusts camera options to the surroundings, though exact features and resolution depend on the device. Samsung’s Galaxy camera guide shows camera and lens controls; the names and positions on your phone may differ.

Which camera mode should I use?

Approach Best fit Main trade-off
Photo Everyday scenes, quick shots, and subjects that may move Less manual control; the camera chooses settings automatically.
Night Dim scenes with subjects that are mostly still Capture and processing can take longer, and movement can blur across frames.
Pro A deliberate exposure, focus, or white-balance adjustment Requires judgment; a setting that helps one scene can hurt another.
Expert RAW Supported Galaxy phones and a workflow that includes editing DNG files More involved than a standard JPEG workflow and unavailable on unsupported setups.

Samsung notes that available modes and their interface locations vary by model and software version. If a mode is missing, look through your Camera app’s mode list and check the software and support information for your exact phone.

How should I photograph in low light?

Try Night mode for a dim, mostly still scene

Choose Night mode when it is available, follow the on-screen timer, and keep the phone steady until capture and processing finish. Samsung describes Night mode as combining multiple images; its support page says it combines 30 images, but this describes the processing method, not a guaranteed result on every Galaxy phone. Samsung’s Night mode instructions note that the mode’s availability and location can vary.

  • 62" Phone Tripod & Selfie Stick Combo: Extendable phone tripod for iPhone and Android, combining a tripod stand and selfie stick in one lightweight design for selfies, photos, videos, vlogging, live streaming, and family gatherings.
  • Adjustable Height & 360° Rotation: The tripod extends up to 62 inches to support standing shots, group photos, video calls, and content creation. The 360° rotating phone holder allows vertical or horizontal shooting.
  • Stable Phone Holder for Daily Recording: Designed for hands-free video recording, online meetings, tutorials, livestreams, and social content. The phone holder keeps your device positioned securely for clear, steady shots.
  • Wide Compatibility with Phones and Cameras: Fits most smartphones from 2.8" to 5.7" wide and includes a universal 1/4" screw mount for compatible cameras, action cameras, webcams, and camcorders.
  • Wireless Remote & Complete Kit: Includes 1 phone tripod/selfie stick, 1 universal phone holder, 1 adapter, and 1 wireless remote shutter. Backed by 12-month after-sales support for everyday shooting needs.

Because the mode combines frames, a person, pet, or vehicle moving during capture may not come out sharply. For action in low light, a quick Photo-mode shot can be a better choice than a longer capture.

Use a stable setup for long exposures

For a stationary night scene or sky, a longer exposure can gather more light, but even slight phone movement can soften the image. Samsung recommends a tripod and remote or timed shutter for night-sky long exposures. A stable surface and the phone’s timer may be enough for some scenes; dedicated gear is optional, not a requirement for everyday photos. Samsung’s night-sky photography guide explains this setup.

Samsung photographer Marilyn Hue describes one particular night photograph made with an 8-second shutter, ISO 50, white balance 4300, and focus at infinity, and another using a 30-second exposure. These are examples tied to specific photographs, not settings to copy blindly. Hue, quoted by Samsung, says: “In low-light photography, we are able to see intense colors as well as fine detail that our eyes cannot.” Samsung’s low-light photography guide provides the examples and attribution.

When does Pro mode help?

Use Pro mode when you have a specific reason to adjust exposure or focus—not simply because manual controls sound more advanced. On supported Galaxy cameras, Samsung documents controls including ISO, shutter speed, exposure value, focus, and white balance. The exact controls vary by device. Samsung’s Pro mode guide describes these options.

  • In the Box: 66" Metal iphone tripod stand, 360° rotatable phone mount, 10m range phone camera remote, Includes 36 months of technical support and product coverage
  • Shutter speed: A faster shutter can help freeze movement; a slower shutter can brighten a stationary scene but makes movement and hand shake more visible.
  • ISO: Raising ISO can help in low light, but Samsung warns that higher ISO can add image noise.
  • Focus: Manual focus can be useful for a stationary subject when automatic focus is not landing where you want.
  • White balance: Adjusting it changes the image’s color cast; automatic white balance is often the simpler choice for changing conditions.

If you are photographing a moving subject or need a quick result, automatic Photo mode is often more dependable than trying to tune several settings mid-shot.

What is Expert RAW, and should I use it?

Expert RAW is a separate Samsung camera app for people who want more editing latitude and are prepared to work with RAW files. Samsung says it is available for Galaxy S20 and later and saves both JPEG and 16-bit Linear DNG RAW; check compatibility for your exact model and software before relying on it. Samsung says the app can be downloaded from Galaxy Store. Samsung Canada’s Expert RAW overview explains the file formats and app.

What should I check when a photo looks wrong?

Blurry or soft

  • Clean the camera glass, then check focus and shooting distance.
  • Consider whether the subject moved or the phone shifted during capture.
  • For a long exposure, stabilize the phone rather than holding it in your hands.

Too dark or washed out

  • Change your angle to a strong light source and look for indirect light.
  • Tap the subject to focus or adjust exposure if your camera offers that control and the automatic result is unsuitable.
  • Challenging lighting can make focus and exposure harder for the camera.

Glare or streaks around lights

  • Wipe the lens and shift the shooting angle.
  • Avoid pointing straight at strong light where possible; glare can be more noticeable at night or at high zoom.

Dark bands or flicker under indoor lights

Samsung attributes banding and flicker to lighting frequency and suggests adjusting shutter speed in Pro mode. Its troubleshooting page gives 1/120 second or lower as a direction to try, not a universal fix; indoor lighting systems differ. Samsung’s image-quality troubleshooting page covers these symptoms and model-specific caveats.

Check the Camera app’s mode list and your phone’s software version. Samsung documents a One UI 8.5 interface change that can integrate Night mode into Photo mode, with an option to restore it as a separate mode on supported setups. The location and availability depend on the phone and software. Samsung’s Night mode interface guidance describes the change.
