Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor the BMC4 release, the reliable setup is: download its complete Server Pack, run it with 64-bit Java 17, allocate at least 6 GB of RAM, accept the EULA, configure server.properties, and make every player install the identical BMC4 client version. “Better Minecraft Plus” is an informal name used for several LunaPixelStudios Better MC generations, so confirm the exact generation before downloading. BMC4 is the Forge-based Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 pack covered by this walkthrough; BMC5 and BMC6 use different loaders and Java versions.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
Better MC is a vanilla-plus experience rather than a separate edition of Minecraft. The BMC4 listing describes more than 100 quests, revised world generation, shader support, new bosses and mobs, thousands of dungeons and structures, and more than 270 mods. It also states: “NOT AN OFFICIAL MINECRAFT PRODUCT. NOT APPROVED BY OR ASSOCIATED WITH MOJANG OR MICROSOFT.”

A server and its players must use the same pack generation, Minecraft version, mod loader, and compatible release files. “Better Minecraft Plus,” “Better MC,” and “BMC” are often used loosely, but the generations are not interchangeable.
| Generation | Minecraft version | Loader | Java expectation | Server-pack information |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMC4 | 1.20.1 | Forge | Java 17 | Use the Server Pack for the selected BMC4 revision; pack size is not stated in the release information. |
| BMC5 | 1.21.1 | NeoForge | Java 21 | Use the matching BMC5 Server Pack; revision and size vary by release. |
| BMC6 snapshot | 26.1.2 | NeoForge | Use the Java runtime specified by that release | Server Pack v7, released October 14, 2026. |
The BMC6 row is a dated snapshot, not a permanent requirement. Pack files, loaders, and Java requirements can change. Treat the exact release page and its server instructions as authoritative when you choose a newer build.
#1 Best Overall
What you need before installing a server
A compatible computer or host
Plan for at least 6 GB of RAM dedicated to the server. Around 8–10 GB is more practical for roughly five or more players, especially when they explore different areas at once. Never allocate more than half of the machine’s total RAM to Minecraft: the operating system, Java overhead, file caching, and other services still need memory.
An SSD is strongly preferable. The world, region files, logs, libraries, backups, and update archives continually grow, and an SSD reduces the long pauses caused by world saves and chunk loading. Allow at least 15 GB of SSD capacity for the installation and its working room; keep additional space for backups and future pack revisions. A 500 GB SSD, such as the Crucial BX500 listed in the hardware guidance, provides ample general-purpose headroom, but capacity alone does not determine performance.
Java and operating-system access
- Use a 64-bit Java runtime. BMC4’s documented requirement is Java 17.
- Make sure the command line and the startup script resolve to that Java installation, not an older 32-bit copy.
- On Windows, you need permission to run batch files and allow Java through the firewall. On Linux or macOS, you need permission to execute shell scripts and write to the server directory.
- If players will connect from outside your home network, you need router access to forward TCP port 25565 and a firewall rule that permits the server.
Agreement among the players
Decide the exact BMC4 revision with everyone before downloading. A client that is one revision ahead, a server that uses a different loader, or a manually added or removed mod can produce a mismatch even when the Minecraft version looks correct.
Download the correct Server Pack
For a manual installation, open the selected pack’s Files page on CurseForge and use the Additional Files area to download that release’s Server Pack. The small launcher manifest is not a complete manual server installation: it tells a launcher what to fetch, but it does not supply the extracted server environment you need.
- Record the full pack name, Minecraft version, loader, and revision number.
- Download the Server Pack belonging to that exact release, not the client profile or launcher manifest.
- Keep the original archive until the server has started successfully; it is useful for rebuilding after a failed extraction.
- Do not mix files from BMC4, BMC5, BMC6, or unrelated Forge and NeoForge packs.
Install BMC4 on a self-hosted machine
1. Create a dedicated folder
Make a new folder used only for this server, such as BetterMC-BMC4-1.20.1. Avoid a cloud-synchronised folder: simultaneous file locking or partial uploads can corrupt a world. Put the folder on the SSD and ensure the account running the server can read and write it.
2. Extract the complete archive
Extract every file from the Server Pack directly into the dedicated folder. Do not leave the files one directory deeper than expected, and do not copy only the visible mods directory. Startup scripts, configuration files, libraries, and pack-specific settings are all part of the server environment.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
3. Verify Java 17
Open a terminal or command prompt in the server folder and check the runtime:
java -version
The result should identify a 64-bit Java 17 installation for BMC4. If the command is missing or reports another major version, install the required 64-bit runtime and correct the system PATH, or edit the startup script to point to the intended Java executable.
4. Run the supplied startup script
On Windows, run startserver.bat. On Linux or macOS, make the script executable if necessary and run startserver.sh:
chmod +x startserver.sh
./startserver.sh
The first launch commonly stops after creating the EULA file. That is expected; do not treat the first stop as a completed installation.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
5. Accept the EULA
Open eula.txt in the server folder and change the agreement line to:
eula=true
Save the file, then start the same script again. Only accept the EULA after reading the terms that apply to your server.
6. Configure server.properties
Stop the server before editing the file. Set the options that matter to your group:
max-players: the player limit you want to support.difficulty: the desired game difficulty.view-distance: a major memory and CPU lever; begin conservatively and raise it only after observing performance.server-port=25565: the standard port. Keep it unless you have a reason to use another one.motd: an optional description displayed in the multiplayer list.
Do not add quotation marks around ordinary values unless the file’s syntax requires them. The server creates or updates many settings on first launch, so make one change at a time and retain a backup copy of the file.

7. Set a sensible memory limit
For a machine with enough total RAM, the supplied startup configuration can begin around:

- Now Minecraft lovers can play a special version of UNO!
- Same as Basic UNO but features Minecraft characters and includes special Creeper rule card. Draw this card and the other players have to draw three more cards from the pile!
- The goal is to get rid of all the cards in your hand.
- First player or team to 500 wins.
- When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!
-Xms6G -Xmx6G
-Xms is the initial heap and -Xmx is the maximum heap. Increasing the maximum is not a substitute for a faster CPU, an SSD, or a lower view distance. If the host has 16 GB of total RAM, for example, allocating 10 GB leaves too little room for the operating system and other processes; stay within the half-of-system-memory rule and watch actual usage.
8. Start until the console reports completion
Run the script again and wait. A successful launch ends with the server’s normal completed-start message and a usable console prompt. The first startup can take considerably longer while Forge builds caches and generates files. Do not interrupt it merely because no player can join during that preparation.
9. Open the network only when needed
Players on the same home network can usually connect using the host computer’s local address. Remote players require TCP port 25565 forwarded from the router to the server machine, plus an operating-system firewall rule allowing the Java process or port. Forward only the port you use, and do not expose administration services unnecessarily.
Install the matching client
Every player should install the identical BMC4 release through the launcher or pack distribution method they use, with Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge selected as specified by that release. The client’s mod list, configuration-sensitive mods, and pack revision must match the server.
- Have the server owner provide the exact release name and revision, not just “Better MC.”
- Install that same release on each player’s computer.
- Launch once locally so the pack can create its client files and complete any first-run downloads.
- Enter the server’s local or public address in Multiplayer.
- If the server uses a nonstandard port, enter the address as
hostname:port.
A client-side shader preference is normally personal, but adding, removing, or updating gameplay mods is not. Keep a change log and apply any mod change to both sides only when the pack’s documentation supports it.

Self-hosting or a managed host?
Self-hosting costs less in direct hosting fees when you already own suitable hardware, but you become responsible for Java, firewall rules, router configuration, backups, updates, crashes, and uptime. A managed host provides a data-center connection and a control panel, often with one-click installation, at the cost of a recurring plan and less control over the underlying machine.

| Initial setup | Manual extraction, Java, scripts, EULA, firewall, and port forwarding. | Often a one-click Better MC installer, followed by pack and memory selection. |
| Control | Full access to files, Java flags, backups, and network settings. | Control depends on the provider’s panel and plan. |
| Maintenance | You perform updates, restarts, monitoring, and recovery. | The provider handles the machine and network; you still manage pack updates and world safety. |
| Connectivity | Depends on your upload bandwidth, ISP, firewall, and port forwarding. | Uses the host’s data-center connection. |
| Memory target | At least 6 GB for the server, with 8–10 GB useful for about five or more players. | Choose a plan that actually supplies at least 6 GB to the game process. |
| Price and availability | Electricity and hardware costs vary; no recurring host fee is required. | Current prices, locations, and promotional terms vary and must be checked with the provider. |
The multiplayer guidance identifies BisectHosting as LunaPixelStudios’ official partner for one-click Better MC setup and names Apex Hosting, Shockbyte, and Nodecraft as alternatives that support the relevant loaders and at least 6 GB of RAM. Those offers and specifications can change, so verify the current plan, region, loader support, backup policy, and cancellation terms before paying.
Backups and updates that prevent avoidable losses
Back up before every change
- Stop the server cleanly from the console before copying files.
- Archive the entire world directory, not only a single region file.
- Include
server.properties,whitelist.json,ops.json, and any pack-specific configuration you have changed. - Store at least one copy on a different drive or machine. A backup on the same disk does not protect against disk failure.
- Label archives with the pack revision and date so you can identify a known-good restore point.
Update deliberately
Read the target release’s loader and Java requirements before replacing files. Keep the existing world untouched until the new server has launched in a separate test folder. If the new pack changes Minecraft versions or loaders, treat it as a migration rather than a simple mod update. Preserve the old installation so the group can return to it if a world or mod is incompatible.
Troubleshoot in the order that removes the most likely causes
The server crashes immediately
- Check
java -versionand confirm 64-bit Java 17 for BMC4. - Confirm the startup script points to the intended Java executable.
- Check that the machine has enough free RAM and that
-Xmxdoes not exceed half of total system memory. - Verify that the full Server Pack was extracted, including libraries, scripts, and configuration files.
- Confirm that the loader is Forge for BMC4, not NeoForge from another generation.
- Read the first meaningful error in the log rather than the final cascade of “failed” messages.
“Mod missing,” channel mismatch, or incompatible client errors
First compare the exact pack revision on both sides. Then compare Minecraft version and loader. Undo unsynchronised edits: a mod added only to the client, removed only from the server, or replaced with a different build can trigger these errors. Reinstalling the same release from a clean archive is often faster than trying to identify several manual changes.
Quick Recap
Players cannot connect
- On the host, confirm the console completed startup and the server is listening on the configured port.
- On a home network, test with the host’s local address before testing from the internet.
- For remote players, check TCP port 25565 forwarding, the operating-system firewall, and whether the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT that prevents inbound connections.
- Recheck the public address and port, then verify the joining client uses the identical pack release.
- Do not publish a local address to remote players; use the reachable public address or a managed host address.
The world lags or players experience long pauses
- Lower
view-distanceand test again. - Keep the world on an SSD and leave free disk space for region files and temporary data.
- Limit simultaneous exploration while the world is generating new terrain.
- Pre-generate heavily explored areas where the selected pack and tools support it.
- Increase RAM only if the machine has unused total memory; excessive allocation can make the operating system swap and worsen lag.
- Check CPU and disk activity before assuming the solution is more memory.
Practical operating checklist
- Record the exact generation, Minecraft version, loader, Java major version, and pack revision.
- Use the release’s complete Server Pack, not a launcher manifest.
- Keep at least 6 GB available to the server; plan on 8–10 GB for a group of about five or more players.
- Use an SSD and maintain at least 15 GB of free installation capacity, plus room for backups.
- Back up the world before changing mods, loader, Java, or pack revision.
- Apply firewall and port-forwarding changes only when outside players need access.
- Have every player install the identical release before debugging individual mods.
