Better ChatGPT Answers Start With These Seven Prompt Details

To get a more useful answer from ChatGPT, tell it what you want done, provide the context that affects the result, and specify how the response should look. These seven details make a practical checklist—not a fixed OpenAI formula or a guarantee of correctness.

Seven details that make a prompt more useful

  1. State the task

Lead with a clear instruction: explain, summarize, compare, draft, troubleshoot, or transform something. Say what a successful result should accomplish rather than relying on a vague request such as “help me with this.” OpenAI’s prompt guidance recommends identifying the task clearly and being specific about the desired result.

Instead of “Tell me about electric cars,” try: “Explain the main differences between hybrid and fully electric cars for someone choosing a vehicle for a 30-mile daily commute.”

  2. Add relevant context

Include the circumstances that could change the answer: your goal, the situation, constraints, or what you have already tried. Share information that helps with this task, not everything you know about yourself. More detail is not automatically better; irrelevant context can distract from the request.

For example, “Suggest weeknight dinners” gives little direction. Adding “for two people, vegetarian, ready in 30 minutes, using chickpeas and spinach” makes the boundaries clearer.

  3. Name the audience

If someone else will use or read the answer, say who they are and what they need to know. Audience is a useful way to make context concrete, not a separate official rule. It can guide the level of explanation, vocabulary, and examples.

For instance: “Explain password managers to a nontechnical parent who uses an iPhone” is more focused than “Explain password managers.”

  4. Choose a tone and style

Tell ChatGPT how the response should sound: formal, friendly, neutral, reassuring, concise, or persuasive. You can also request a style suited to the situation, such as plain language for a public notice or a professional tone for a work email. OpenAI explicitly recommends stating a preferred tone and style.

  5. Provide the source material when the answer depends on it

If you want a summary, analysis, or rewrite of particular material, include the relevant text or attach a supported file when that option is available. Identify what the model should use—for example, “Summarize the attached report and list its three main recommendations.” ChatGPT’s document and data-analysis capabilities support working with files, but availability and supported inputs depend on the account, plan, workspace settings, file type, and surface. See OpenAI’s guidance on creating and editing documents with ChatGPT and data analysis with ChatGPT.

Only provide material you are comfortable sharing in that conversation. If you share a conversation link, check what it contains and who can access it: shared conversations may include supported images and uploaded files, and a personal-account link can be viewed by anyone permitted to open it. Avoid including sensitive personal information in content you share. OpenAI explains how conversation sharing works.

  6. Specify the output shape and priorities

Say what form the answer should take and what it must include or preserve: a table, checklist, email, short explanation, or step-by-step plan. For a document task, mention its destination and requirements such as layout, tone, or table structure. If some points matter most, name them. OpenAI recommends breaking complex requests into focused tasks and highlighting important areas.

For example: “Compare these three options in a table. Include upfront cost, ongoing maintenance, and the main drawback; keep the explanation under 200 words.” Use limits that serve the task rather than piling on unrelated instructions.

  7. Review the answer and give focused feedback

Treat the first response as a starting point. Check whether it answered the task, followed your constraints, and used the right level of detail. Then ask for a specific revision: “Keep the examples, remove the jargon, and shorten the second section.” OpenAI recommends refining prompts iteratively and treating the interaction as a conversation. If a complex request is not working as one large prompt, break it into smaller steps and address one part at a time.

A reusable prompt pattern

Combine the details that matter for your particular task. You do not need to fill every slot for every request.

Task: [what you want done]
Context: [relevant situation, goal, and constraints]
Audience: [who will use or read the result]
Tone/style: [how it should sound]
Source material: [text or attached file, if relevant]
Output: [format, length, and must-have details]

After ChatGPT responds, add a follow-up describing what to change. Share only the context and source material needed for the task, and review the result rather than assuming a detailed prompt makes it automatically correct.
