Betelgeuse vs. Antares: How Are the Two Red Supergiants Different?

Betelgeuse and Antares are both cool, luminous red supergiants visible without a telescope, but they are not twins. Betelgeuse marks Orion’s shoulder, while Antares lies in Scorpius. The best-established differences concern their sky positions, the way Betelgeuse varies in brightness, and the atmospheric motions mapped around Antares. Published summaries give similarly rounded diameters, so the evidence does not identify a dependable size winner.

Mass estimates, distances and temperatures also come from different investigations and are not a controlled, head-to-head measurement. The careful answer to “which is bigger, brighter, closer or nearer to exploding?” is therefore qualified rather than dramatic: both are advanced massive stars expected eventually to end as supernovae, but neither cited source predicts an imminent explosion.

The short answer

Betelgeuse and Antares occupy the same broad stellar category: red supergiants. Each has exhausted the core fuel that powered its earlier life, expanded to an enormous cool outer envelope and become bright enough to see with the unaided eye. Their colors and evolutionary stage make them look similar in a night sky, yet their observable behavior is different.

  • Location: Betelgeuse is Alpha Orionis, on the shoulder of Orion. Antares is the prominent red star in Scorpius.
  • Size: NASA and the European Southern Observatory each publish a rounded estimate of about 700 solar diameters for one of the stars. Those figures do not establish a winner.
  • Mass: NASA’s Betelgeuse explainer gives an estimate near 15 solar masses; an ESO release puts Antares near 12. The methods and contexts differ.
  • Variability: NASA classifies Betelgeuse as semiregularly variable and documents recurring cycles plus its dramatic 2019 dimming. The cited Antares material concentrates on atmospheric motion rather than a matching variability cycle.
  • Atmosphere: ESO’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer mapped motions across Antares’s surface and extended atmosphere, revealing unexpectedly turbulent gas.
  • Future: Both are late-stage stars expected eventually to explode as supernovae. The 2019 Betelgeuse event was a surface mass ejection, not a countdown signal.

What kind of stars are they?

A red supergiant is a high-mass star in a late evolutionary phase. After burning hydrogen in its core for millions of years, such a star changes its internal structure and swells dramatically. Its enlarged surface cools, shifting the visible color toward orange or red even though the star remains extremely luminous overall.

“Red” describes the apparent color produced by the cooler photosphere; it does not mean the star is dim. A supergiant radiates from a surface vastly larger than the Sun’s, so a comparatively cool surface can still produce extraordinary total light. Betelgeuse and Antares are therefore useful naked-eye examples of how surface temperature, radius and total luminosity are related but not interchangeable.

The two stars are also at different positions on the celestial sphere. Their resemblance is physical, not geographic: they are separate objects in separate constellations, and the available summaries do not provide a single, consistently measured distance for both.

Comparison at a glance

Property Betelgeuse Antares What the comparison supports
Stellar type Red supergiant Red supergiant They share the same broad evolutionary class.
Constellation Orion; Alpha Orionis Scorpius A clear difference in sky location.
Published diameter estimate About 700 times the Sun’s size (NASA Science, 2023) About 700 times the Sun’s diameter (ESO, 2017) Rounded, source-specific values; no reliable size winner.
Published mass estimate About 15 solar masses (NASA Science, 2023) About 12 solar masses (ESO, 2017) Approximate estimates from different source contexts, not a harmonized analysis.
Temperature information About 3,300 °C at the surface (NASA Science, 2023) No matched numerical temperature in the cited ESO release; described as comparatively cool A numerical temperature ranking is not established.
Variability information Semiregular; cycles near 400 days and about five years The cited material discusses atmospheric motions, not a directly comparable cycle Do not infer that Antares is non-variable.
Distance information About 700 light-years in NASA’s 2023 explainer; roughly 548 light-years in a NASA 2024 observing article No comparable value established in the cited sources No defensible closer-star verdict from these figures.
Notable recent observation ESO announced strong evidence for a faint companion in 2026 ESO mapped surface and atmospheric motions with the VLTI in 2017 The companion’s evolutionary effect is still an open question; Antares provides a detailed atmosphere case study.

Where can you find each star?

Betelgeuse in Orion

Betelgeuse is the reddish star marking one of Orion’s shoulders. Orion’s three aligned belt stars make the constellation easy to recognize, and Betelgeuse sits above and to one side of that belt in the conventional figure of the hunter. Its formal designation, Alpha Orionis, reflects its importance in the constellation even though stellar-designation order does not always correspond to apparent brightness.

Antares in Scorpius

Antares is the red supergiant associated with the heart of Scorpius. The constellation’s curved body and long tail are most conspicuous when Scorpius is above the horizon during its seasonal evening visibility. The name Antares is often explained as a reference to its reddish appearance resembling Mars, but the practical observing distinction is simpler: it belongs to Scorpius, not Orion.

Because the constellations appear in different parts of the seasonal sky, the stars are not normally next-door neighbors in an observer’s field of view. Both can be identified without optical aid when they are above the local horizon, although light pollution, twilight and latitude affect how easy each is to see.

Are they really the same size?

The two institutional summaries give nearly identical rounded diameters, but that apparent tie should not be mistaken for a precision measurement. NASA’s 2023 description assigns Betelgeuse a size of about 700 Suns; ESO’s 2017 description assigns Antares about 700 solar diameters. The matching round number tells a reader that both envelopes are enormous, not that astronomers have measured them to the same uncertainty.

Red-supergiant boundaries are difficult to define. Their atmospheres are extended, dilute and dynamic rather than sharply edged like a solid planet. Interferometers measure an angular size on the sky, while the conversion to a physical diameter depends on distance and on which atmospheric layer is treated as the surface. Different wavelengths can also sample different layers. Those issues make a simple “700 versus 700” contest scientifically misleading.

The defensible conclusion is that Betelgeuse and Antares are both on the order of hundreds of solar diameters across. The cited figures do not support saying that one is conclusively larger.

What do the mass estimates tell us?

NASA’s Betelgeuse explainer gives a mass estimate of roughly 15 Suns, while ESO’s Antares release gives roughly 12. Both values place the stars among the massive objects capable of progressing through a red-supergiant phase. They should not be read as if one research team weighed both stars with the same model and instrument.

Mass is usually inferred rather than placed on a scale. Astronomers combine brightness, distance, atmospheric properties, evolutionary models and, where available, evidence from a companion or surrounding material. Uncertainty in any of those inputs propagates into the final estimate. The two published numbers therefore indicate similar high-mass status, while leaving the exact ranking less secure than the table’s neat integers might suggest.

A higher quoted mass does not automatically mean a larger visible disk today. Stellar evolution can produce different radii, mass-loss histories and atmospheric structures for stars that began with comparable masses. Nor does the estimate alone determine which object will explode first; that depends on each star’s internal state, which cannot be read directly from a rounded mass figure.

Which one is hotter, and why are both red?

NASA gives Betelgeuse a surface temperature of about 3,300 °C. That is cool by the standards of luminous stars, whose blue-white examples have much hotter photospheres. The enlarged outer envelope of a red supergiant spreads the star’s energy over a huge area, lowering the temperature of the visible surface and producing the characteristic red-orange color.

The cited ESO Antares release calls Antares comparatively cool but does not provide a matched numerical temperature. Without the same measurement and uncertainty for both stars, it would be overconfident to declare one definitively hotter or cooler. Their red appearance is consistent with both being cool supergiants; it is not a thermometer precise enough to rank them.

Color can also be altered by interstellar dust, the observer’s atmosphere and the star’s own changing brightness. A visual impression through binoculars is useful for identification, but it is not a substitute for a calibrated temperature measurement.

Why is Betelgeuse famous for changing brightness?

NASA classifies Betelgeuse as a semiregular variable. Its brightness changes on a cycle of roughly 400 days and also shows a longer variation of around five years. These cycles are not perfectly clocklike: a semiregular star can show changing amplitude and timing as its atmosphere expands, contracts and sheds material.

In late 2019, Betelgeuse underwent an unusually deep dimming that attracted worldwide attention. NASA’s Hubble observations connected the event with a surface mass ejection. Material launched from the star cooled and helped obscure part of the visible disk, after which the star gradually recovered. The episode demonstrates that a red supergiant can change dramatically without entering its final explosion.

The cited Antares material does not provide a directly comparable cycle length or amplitude. That absence is a limit of the particular description, not evidence that Antares never varies. It is safer to say that Betelgeuse’s variability is better documented in these sources, while Antares is highlighted for a different kind of behavior: motion in its extended atmosphere.

What did astronomers see in Antares’s atmosphere?

ESO reported that observations with the Very Large Telescope Interferometer mapped motions on Antares’s surface and in the atmosphere above it. The maps revealed unexpectedly turbulent gas in the star’s extended atmosphere. Instead of a calm, evenly stratified layer, the observations showed large-scale motion that helps explain how material can be transported away from a red supergiant.

That result addresses a long-standing problem in stellar evolution. Keiichi Ohnaka, lead author of the Antares study, said: How stars like Antares lose mass so quickly in the final phase of their evolution has been a problem for over half a century, emphasizing why atmospheric structure matters. Mass loss changes the envelope that surrounds the core and influences what the star will look like near the end of its life.

The Antares observations are not a brightness comparison with Betelgeuse. They are a spatially resolved study of gas motion, made possible by combining light from multiple telescopes. Betelgeuse also loses material, as the 2019 event illustrates, but the two cited studies examine different episodes and use different observational emphases.

Does Betelgeuse have a companion?

In a July 2026 announcement, ESO reported strong evidence for a faint companion to Betelgeuse. The object was estimated at roughly two to three solar masses. Detecting a much fainter neighbor beside a brilliant, extended supergiant is difficult, so the announcement is significant even though many details remain to be established.

The companion could eventually help astronomers understand Betelgeuse’s mass, motion and history, but its effect on the red supergiant’s evolution remains an open question. It should not be treated as proof that an explosion is imminent, nor as a reason to revise the published diameter and mass estimates into a single exact model.

Antares is not given a comparable companion result in the cited material. That difference reflects what has been reported in the selected observations, not a demonstration that Antares has no companion.

Which star is closer?

There is no reliable closer-star verdict from the cited figures. NASA’s 2023 Betelgeuse explainer uses an estimate of about 700 light-years, while a NASA observing article from 2024 gives roughly 548 light-years. The disagreement illustrates that distance estimates can change as data, calibration and analysis improve.

The consulted Antares sources do not supply a matching distance estimate. Comparing Betelgeuse’s two values with an unstated Antares value would manufacture a ranking. A responsible article therefore reports the source-dependent Betelgeuse estimates and leaves the relative distance unresolved here.

Distance matters because it affects inferred luminosity, physical size and mass-loss rate. When those downstream quantities are compared, the underlying distance assumptions must be matched first. Rounded values from different years or methods cannot support more precision than the measurements themselves.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Which one is brighter?

Both stars are bright enough for naked-eye observation, but the available material does not provide a single, same-method luminosity measurement for each. Apparent brightness also changes when a variable star dims and depends on distance and foreground dust. A statement that one is permanently brighter would therefore go beyond the evidence summarized here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Betelgeuse’s documented cycles mean its apparent prominence can change over time. Antares can look strikingly red in Scorpius, yet visual color and brightness impressions are not a controlled luminosity test. To compare intrinsic power, astronomers would need consistently calibrated measurements, distances and corrections for intervening material.

Are either of them about to explode?

Both stars are expected eventually to end as core-collapse supernovae because they are massive, evolved stars. “Eventually” is the essential word. The cited sources do not predict a date, a countdown or an imminent event for either object.

Betelgeuse’s 2019 dimming was associated with a surface mass ejection and subsequent recovery. That behavior is dramatic but compatible with the unstable atmospheres of red supergiants. It is not evidence that the core has begun the final collapse. A future supernova could occur on an astronomical timescale that is short compared with the star’s total life yet impossible to schedule from these observations.

Antares’s turbulent atmosphere likewise signals vigorous mass loss, not a known explosion timetable. Atmospheric instability is part of the late-stage story, but it does not supply the missing information about conditions deep inside the core.

How to observe both stars

Finding Betelgeuse

  1. Choose an evening when Orion is above your horizon and the sky is reasonably dark.
  2. Identify Orion’s three belt stars in a short, nearly straight line.
  3. Look toward the shoulder of the recognizable hunter figure for the orange-red star Betelgeuse.
  4. Compare its color with nearby blue-white stars; the contrast is easiest when the star is high enough to reduce atmospheric scintillation.

Finding Antares

  1. Look for Scorpius during its seasonal evening visibility from your latitude.
  2. Trace the constellation’s curved body toward the bright red star near its central region.
  3. Use the surrounding pattern of Scorpius to distinguish Antares from Mars or other reddish points that may share the sky.
  4. Observe when the star is well above the horizon, because low altitude can make colors appear distorted by Earth’s atmosphere.

No telescope is required to see either star. Binoculars can make the surrounding star fields easier to explore, but the naked-eye identification is the important point. A seasonal star chart or planisphere can help with timing, especially for observers unfamiliar with the constellations, but the stars’ visibility depends on date, latitude, daylight and local obstructions.

How to interpret conflicting numbers

Readers often encounter a single headline number for a star’s size, mass or distance and assume it is definitive. For red supergiants, the number usually depends on a chain of assumptions. The measured angular diameter must be combined with a distance estimate; the physical model must decide which atmospheric layer counts as the surface; and the star’s changing brightness must be separated from instrumental and interstellar effects.

For that reason, the year and publisher belong beside each figure. NASA’s 2023 Betelgeuse explainer and ESO’s 2017 Antares release are useful summaries, but they are not a joint observing program. NASA’s separate 2024 article illustrates how even one star’s rough distance can be reported differently at different times. Reporting the provenance prevents a rounded estimate from masquerading as a laboratory-style comparison.

The same discipline applies to missing values. The absence of a numerical Antares temperature or variability cycle in the cited release does not justify filling the gap with a guess. It means that this particular comparison can make a firm statement about shared red-supergiant status and observed atmospheric behavior, while leaving some rankings open.

What is genuinely different between them?

  • They occupy different constellations: Orion for Betelgeuse and Scorpius for Antares.
  • Their best-known observations differ: Betelgeuse is the better-documented variable in the cited NASA material, while Antares is the subject of detailed VLTI maps showing turbulent atmospheric motion.
  • The published mass estimates are not identical: NASA’s approximate Betelgeuse value is higher than ESO’s approximate Antares value, but the estimates are not standardized enough to produce a definitive ranking.
  • Betelgeuse has a newly reported companion candidate: ESO’s 2026 announcement gives a two-to-three-solar-mass estimate and leaves its evolutionary influence unresolved.
  • Their distances cannot be ranked from these sources: Betelgeuse itself has differing rough values in NASA publications, and no matching Antares value is provided.

What is not established is just as important: the cited material does not prove that one star is larger, hotter, intrinsically brighter or closer, and it does not indicate that either is about to explode.

The practical verdict

Betelgeuse and Antares are best understood as two separate examples of the red-supergiant phase rather than as a simple winner-and-loser pair. Their shared scale is conveyed by the roughly 700-solar-diameter summaries, while their individuality appears in Betelgeuse’s semiregular cycles and major mass-ejection episode, Antares’s turbulent atmosphere, their different constellations and the newly reported Betelgeuse companion.

When a comparison demands a single answer, use the narrowest answer the observations support: same broad class, similar order-of-magnitude size, approximate masses from different analyses, no matched distance or luminosity ranking, and a common eventual fate without an advertised schedule.
