There is no universal ZimaCube 2 replacement. Choose the six-bay UGREEN NASync DXP5800 Pro when matching drive capacity is the priority; choose the four-bay UGREEN NASync DXP4800 Pro when onboard 10GbE and expandable memory matter more; and look at Synology, QNAP, Asustor or TerraMaster when software ecosystem, support or a different upgrade path outweighs bay count. These are feature-based matches; no controlled, same-lab performance results are published.

Start with the ZimaCube 2 you are actually replacing

The name covers more than one configuration. ZimaSpace’s hardware documentation lists the ZimaCube 2 family with six SATA drive bays, four M.2 NVMe slots, two 2.5GbE network ports, two Thunderbolt 4 ports and PCIe expansion. The Pro is listed as a separate configuration, so do not assume a feature shown on a Pro page is present on the standard model.

A TechRadar review identifies the reviewed standard ZimaCube 2 as using an Intel Core i3-1215U, 8GB of LPDDR5 memory, a stated maximum of 32GB, a 256GB internal SSD, six SATA bays, four M.2 slots, dual 2.5GbE and two Thunderbolt ports, running ZimaOS 1.61. Product revisions and supported capacities can change; check the exact SKU and current manufacturer documentation before ordering.

The key baseline limitation: no native 10GbE on the standard model

One review says the standard ZimaCube 2 does not include native 10GbE. A real 10GbE connection therefore requires a compatible add-in network card. The available PCIe slot, lane allocation, card clearance, cooling, drivers and operating-system support all matter. A card that fits physically is not automatically a supported or useful upgrade.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What the baseline means for an alternative

  • Six SATA bays give the ZimaCube 2 a larger hard-drive expansion path than four- and five-bay systems.
  • Four M.2 slots can be valuable for cache, fast pools or an all-flash project, but the exact supported roles depend on ZimaOS, firmware and the drive configuration.
  • Dual 2.5GbE is faster than 1GbE for compatible clients and switches, but it is not the same as onboard 10GbE.
  • Thunderbolt 4 can be useful for fast local-attached workflows, although the benefit depends on the client, cable, protocol and software.
  • PCIe expansion preserves an upgrade route, but adding a NIC or controller consumes the slot and introduces compatibility and cooling decisions.

The closest six-bay alternative: UGREEN NASync DXP5800 Pro

If you want to keep six 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA positions, the UGREEN NASync DXP5800 Pro is the closest named alternative in the available evidence. TechRadar reports six bays, dual 10GbE, dual Thunderbolt 4, 8GB of memory, two Gen4 M.2 slots and one PCIe x4 slot. Those are review-time specifications, not a guarantee that every regional SKU has the same hardware.

Feature ZimaCube 2 standard baseline DXP5800 Pro reported specification What to verify
SATA bays 6 6 Drive size support, RAID modes and maximum tested capacity
M.2 slots 4 2 Gen4 M.2 slots Whether slots are for cache, storage pools or boot use
Networking 2 × 2.5GbE 2 × 10GbE Port negotiation, switch requirements and driver behavior
High-speed external ports 2 × Thunderbolt 4 2 × Thunderbolt 4 Peripheral compatibility and software support
Expansion PCIe expansion 1 × PCIe x4 slot Slot generation, lane wiring and card clearance
Memory 8GB LPDDR5; review states 32GB maximum 8GB reported by TechRadar Whether memory is replaceable and the current maximum

TechRadar quoted a price of $1,027.99 for the DXP5800 Pro at review time. That is a point-in-time US report, not a live price, and it may exclude drives, memory upgrades, network hardware or backup media. Treat the six-bay match and built-in 10GbE as the reasons to investigate this model—not the review price as a current offer.

Who should choose it

  • Someone migrating an existing six-drive array who does not want to surrender a bay.
  • A workstation owner with a 10GbE switch, cabling and clients already in place.
  • A homelab builder who wants a PCIe slot after the system already provides 10GbE.

Where it is not equivalent

It reports two M.2 slots rather than the ZimaCube 2’s four, and the evidence does not establish identical operating-system behavior, Thunderbolt implementation or expansion bandwidth. Do not assume that a six-bay chassis delivers the same cache, VM or container experience. Confirm UGOS Pro features, supported filesystems and third-party operating-system support for the exact firmware.

The four-bay 10GbE option: UGREEN NASync DXP4800 Pro

The UGREEN NASync DXP4800 Pro trades two SATA bays for a more aggressive network and memory specification. TechRadar reports an Intel Core i3-1315U, 8GB of DDR5 expandable to 96GB, four SATA bays, two Gen4 x4 M.2 slots, 10GbE plus 2.5GbE and UGOS Pro.

Consideration DXP4800 Pro reported position Implication for a ZimaCube 2 buyer
Drive bays 4 SATA Not a capacity substitute for six bays; plan drive sizes and RAID before buying
NVMe 2 Gen4 x4 M.2 slots Fewer slots than the ZimaCube 2, with potentially high per-slot bandwidth
Network 10GbE plus 2.5GbE Useful only when switches, clients, cabling and storage workloads can use it
Memory 8GB DDR5, reported expandable to 96GB More headroom for virtual machines, containers and simultaneous services if the upgrade is supported
Operating system UGOS Pro Compare application availability, backup tools and third-party OS support with your workload

This is the better fit when 10GbE is a requirement and four bays are enough. It is the wrong fit if your migration plan depends on keeping six SATA drives online. The reported CPU, memory ceiling and port configuration come from a product review; recheck the current SKU, firmware and memory compatibility. No current price is published.

When 10GbE will and will not help

10GbE raises the network link ceiling; it does not make every file copy ten times faster. The NAS must read or write quickly enough, the client must have a 10GbE interface, and the switch and cabling must support the negotiated rate. Small files, encryption, parity calculations, hard-drive seek time and concurrent services can become the bottleneck. The available reviews do not establish a universal home-network speed gain.

Five-bay and six-bay appliance alternatives

Synology DiskStation DS1525+

The DS1525+ is a five-bay option for buyers who are willing to give up one SATA position for a mature DSM administration and backup ecosystem. TechRadar’s comparison describes two 2.5GbE ports and a proprietary PCIe slot. Compatibility rules for drives, expansion units and M.2 devices can change with hardware and DSM releases, so verify the current compatibility list before purchasing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose this path when guided setup, family backup, photo management and an established application catalog matter more than four M.2 slots or Thunderbolt 4. Do not present five bays as equivalent to six: the missing position affects usable capacity, hot-spare planning and future replacement flexibility.

Asustor Lockerstor 6 Gen3 AS6806T

The Lockerstor 6 Gen3 AS6806T is another six-bay comparison point. TechRadar describes four M.2 slots, 2.5GbE ports and 10GbE expansion through PCIe, while noting that its review price was high. The amount of that price was not stated in the available evidence, so there is no defensible current figure to quote.

This model makes sense for a buyer who wants six bays and four M.2 positions but can accept adding 10GbE rather than receiving it onboard. Check the exact PCIe card requirements, slot bandwidth, cooling and operating-system support. A PCIe upgrade also means the slot may no longer be available for another controller or accelerator.

Four-bay systems from TerraMaster and QNAP

TerraMaster’s July 16, 2026 comparison article places its four-bay F4 models alongside the Synology DS923+, QNAP TS-462 and UGREEN DXP4800 Plus. Use the hardware values in that article as TerraMaster’s published comparison table, not as an independent benchmark. The evidence does not provide a controlled test across these products.

Four-bay systems can be sensible when your data set fits comfortably in four drives and you prefer a smaller chassis, a particular software catalog or a lower expansion burden. Compare CPU, memory ceiling, network ports, M.2 behavior, hardware transcoding claims, backup applications and update policy for the exact model. A four-bay enclosure is not a direct replacement for six-bay growth.

How to choose: a decision process that avoids the common mismatch

1. Count SATA bays before looking at CPU names

Write down the number of disks you have now, the number you expect to add, and whether one bay must remain available for a replacement or hot spare. Six bays, five bays and four bays represent different expansion paths even when the systems have similar processors. M.2 slots should be counted separately because they may be restricted to cache or a particular storage role.

2. Define the network you can actually use

Map the NAS port, switch, client adapter and cable for every high-throughput workflow. If all clients are 1GbE, dual 2.5GbE or 10GbE will not accelerate those clients without upgrades. If you need 10GbE on the standard ZimaCube 2, budget for a compatible PCIe NIC and verify lane allocation, physical clearance and driver support first.

3. Size memory for services, not marketing

Basic file serving needs less memory than a host running several containers, virtual machines, indexing jobs and media services. The reviewed ZimaCube 2 is listed with 8GB LPDDR5 and a stated 32GB maximum. The DXP4800 Pro review reports 8GB DDR5 expandable to 96GB. Those figures are not interchangeable: memory type, upgrade method, vendor limits and support policy differ. Confirm the maximum for the exact SKU before planning a VM-heavy build.

4. Decide how much operating-system work you want

Priority Questions to ask Systems to investigate
Simple appliance administration Are backup, photo, user and alert workflows available in the current app catalog? DSM, UGOS Pro, QTS/QuTS, TOS and ZimaOS
Homelab experimentation Can you install containers, virtual machines or another NAS operating system without losing required hardware support? ZimaOS and systems with documented third-party OS options
Long-term maintenance How often are updates released, and what happens to drive, M.2 and expansion compatibility after an update? Check each vendor’s current release notes and compatibility lists
Family sharing Can nontechnical users restore files, upload photos and receive alerts without administrator intervention? Compare the current vendor applications rather than CPU specifications

Android Central reports that the reviewer used ZimaOS and says TrueNAS or other NAS software can be installed. The same source describes third-party operating-system options on the reviewed UGREEN system, with support caveats. These are reviewer observations, not a promise that every OS, driver or feature is vendor-supported.

5. Calculate the complete system cost

  • NAS chassis and included internal SSD, if any.
  • All SATA drives, with matching warranty and workload ratings.
  • M.2 NVMe drives if your chosen software supports them for the intended role.
  • Memory upgrades where the platform permits them.
  • 10GbE NIC, switch, transceivers and cabling if 10GbE is not onboard.
  • A separate backup target. RAID improves availability; it is not a backup.
  • Electricity, replacement-drive shipping and any expansion enclosure required later.

Review prices quoted for the ZimaCube alternatives are point-in-time US reporting and may exclude drives and upgrades. Check a live regional listing and the manufacturer’s current compatibility documentation immediately before purchase.

Storage planning: bays, M.2 slots and backups

Use a capacity worksheet

  1. List each current disk’s usable capacity and age.
  2. Choose the redundancy level your operating system supports and decide how much space must remain free for repair operations.
  3. Estimate three-year growth for photos, video, project files, backups and virtual-machine images.
  4. Compare that total with the usable capacity of four-, five- and six-bay layouts using the same drive sizes.
  5. Reserve money and a physical location for a separate backup copy.

Do not treat four M.2 slots as four automatic replacements for SATA bays. Some platforms use NVMe only for cache or system data; others support NVMe storage pools only in particular firmware versions. Read the current storage-role documentation for the exact model.

Plan the migration, not just the enclosure

Before moving disks, record the current filesystem, RAID or pool layout, shares, users, permissions, encryption keys, snapshots and backup jobs. A new NAS may not import a proprietary array or preserve application metadata. Keep the original system untouched until the new system has passed file-integrity checks and a restore test.

Containers and virtual machines

Check CPU virtualization support, memory ceiling, storage-pool placement and the number of network interfaces exposed to guests. A platform can run containers yet lack the RAM, I/O isolation or driver support needed for a dense VM host. Ask whether your chosen operating system supports PCIe passthrough, USB devices, hardware transcoding and scheduled snapshots before committing to a design.

PCIe expansion

Compare the physical slot, electrical lane count, generation, bracket height and cooling path. A slot described as PCIe x4 may not provide four lanes in every workload, and a multi-port NIC can affect airflow. Verify whether installing a card disables an M.2 slot or changes the available bandwidth.

Third-party operating systems

Installing another NAS operating system can improve flexibility but may remove vendor support for fan control, LEDs, sleep states, hardware acceleration, Thunderbolt, disks or updates. Keep recovery media, the factory image and a tested rollback path. Do not assume that a reviewer’s successful installation represents a supported production configuration.

Network and service setup checklist

  1. Inventory the network: record switch speeds, VLANs, router capabilities, client NICs and cable categories.
  2. Update safely: read the release notes, export configuration and confirm a restorable backup before changing firmware.
  3. Create storage: select the redundancy layout, set alerts and leave free space for rebuilds and snapshots.
  4. Separate accounts: use individual users, strong passwords and least-privilege shares instead of a shared administrator login.
  5. Enable protection: turn on snapshots or versioning where supported, then schedule an external backup.
  6. Test recovery: restore representative files, a permissions set and one application dataset before declaring the migration complete.
  7. Measure the real bottleneck: test a large sequential file, many small files and concurrent clients; compare results with the network link actually negotiated.

Common buying and setup mistakes

Buying a four-bay model for a six-drive migration

This is the easiest error to avoid. If six disks are part of the current or near-term plan, remove four-bay models from the shortlist unless you are deliberately consolidating data onto larger disks and have budgeted that migration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming 10GbE equals 10Gbps of file-copy speed

Link rate is only one limit. Hard-drive arrays, parity, encryption, protocol overhead, client storage and small-file metadata can all dominate. Upgrade the rest of the path or the port may sit idle.

Using RAID as the backup plan

RAID protects availability after some drive failures; it does not protect against deletion, ransomware, theft, fire or a corrupted synchronization job. Keep at least one independently stored backup and verify restores.

Ignoring software lock-in

Before purchasing, confirm that you can export data and configuration if the vendor application you rely on disappears or changes. Check whether snapshots, encrypted shares and application databases can be restored on another platform.

Trusting a review-time specification forever

Prices, bundled memory, firmware, drive compatibility and regional SKUs change. Recheck the product page, support matrix and current release notes for the exact model and region.

Which alternative fits which buyer?

Your priority Best starting point Reason Main compromise
Keep six SATA bays and gain onboard 10GbE UGREEN NASync DXP5800 Pro Reported six bays, dual 10GbE and dual Thunderbolt 4 Only two reported Gen4 M.2 slots; price and availability are volatile
Onboard 10GbE with a smaller array UGREEN NASync DXP4800 Pro Reported 10GbE plus 2.5GbE and memory expansion to 96GB Four bays cannot replace six-bay growth
Guided administration and a mature appliance ecosystem Synology DS1525+ Five bays and DSM-oriented workflows One fewer bay; proprietary PCIe and changing compatibility rules
Six bays plus four M.2 positions Asustor Lockerstor 6 Gen3 AS6806T Reported six bays and four M.2 slots 10GbE is described as PCIe expansion; review notes a high price
Four bays with a vendor-defined feature comparison TerraMaster or QNAP four-bay models Potentially smaller footprint and different software choices Vendor comparison claims are not independent head-to-head testing
Experimentation and custom services ZimaOS-compatible or third-party-OS-capable hardware More control over containers, VMs and storage software More maintenance and potentially less vendor support

Bottom line for a ZimaCube 2 buyer

Preserve six SATA bays first if your data and expansion plan require them; the DXP5800 Pro is the closest named match in the available comparisons. Select the DXP4800 Pro when four bays are sufficient and onboard 10GbE plus a much higher reported memory ceiling are more valuable than capacity. Choose a five-bay or four-bay appliance when software administration, support and ecosystem fit outweigh raw bay count. Whichever route you take, verify the exact SKU, live regional price, firmware, drive and M.2 compatibility, PCIe details and backup plan before moving production data.
