Best Yu-Gi-Oh! Games to Play After GX Tag Force

For most players, start with Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution. It offers the broadest solo package, more than 10,000 cards, story campaigns covering the animated series through VRAINS, local and online play, and more than 80 hours of documented gameplay. Choose Yu-Gi-Oh! MASTER DUEL for current competitive play, or wait for Yu-Gi-Oh! TAG FORCE GX if what you really miss is Duel Academy, partner selection, student activities, and Tag Duels.

Quick picks

Yu-Gi-Oh! TAG FORCE GX Closest match to the GX Tag Force formula Over 3,800 cards; more than 100 characters; partner Tag Duels and school activities Announced for February 16, 2027, on Steam, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2
Yu-Gi-Oh! EARLY DAYS COLLECTION Compact retro play Classic early Yu-Gi-Oh! RPGs and strategic card games Released February 25, 2025
Yu-Gi-Oh! DUEL LINKS Lighter, character-led digital dueling Competitive battles built around Yugi, Kaiba and other characters Released January 11, 2017

There is no documented review score or sales ranking that establishes one universal winner among these games. The practical choice depends on whether you value a long solo campaign, current online rules, GX-era role-playing, or compact retro sessions.

1. Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution is the best overall follow-up

Link Evolution is the safest recommendation when you want a substantial game rather than a short collection of duels. Konami’s 2019 product information advertises more than 10,000 cards and more than 80 hours of gameplay, giving it the largest clearly documented solo package in this group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it suits a former Tag Force player

  • It has a real campaign structure. Story content follows the animated series from the original era through VRAINS, so you move through multiple generations instead of repeating a single ladder.
  • The card pool is broad. The advertised total exceeds 10,000 cards, which is comparable in scale to MASTER DUEL and far larger than the GX-focused pool announced for TAG FORCE GX.
  • It supports solo and multiplayer. You can play the story and other solo content, then use local or online play when you want a human opponent.
  • It is available now. Unlike the announced remake, it does not require waiting for a 2027 release.

Switch ownership and editions

The Nintendo Switch edition is documented as both physical and digital. Konami lists a $39.99 MSRP for that edition, and the physical package includes three official Yu-Gi-Oh! cards. The PS4, Xbox One and Steam versions are digital-only according to the same product information.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If you specifically want a cartridge, Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution is the clearest fit among the researched choices. Check the retailer listing for the edition and region you are buying, because the physical-format information applies to the Switch release.

What to expect from the progression

The game is better understood as a broad series-spanning campaign than as a direct continuation of Duel Academy life. Its strength is the amount of story-linked dueling and the size of its card catalogue, not the partner-simulation loop that defined GX Tag Force. Choose it when campaign length and variety matter more than school activities or a single anime setting.

2. MASTER DUEL is the modern competitive choice

Yu-Gi-Oh! MASTER DUEL is the recommendation for players who want the current competitive card game and a large online population to play against. Konami describes it as the definitive edition of the competitive game and lists it as free-to-play with in-app purchases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Platforms and account features

Konami lists PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android versions. Cross-platform play lets you duel against people on other supported systems, while cross-save allows progress to move between platforms when the same account setup is used.

Why it is different from Tag Force

  • Competitive focus: tournaments and online duels are central rather than optional extras.
  • Current rules: the game is built around the modern TCG environment, so card interactions and deck construction are not limited to the GX era.
  • Large catalogue: the advertised pool exceeds 10,000 cards.
  • Solo content remains available: Solo Mode provides structured play for learning and for players who do not want to queue immediately.

Free-to-play does not mean every card or convenience is obtained without spending. The official listing confirms in-app purchases, but it does not establish a single total cost for building a particular deck. Treat it as an ongoing service rather than a one-time purchase with a fixed complete-card-set price.

Who should choose it

Pick MASTER DUEL if you care about learning contemporary deck construction, entering tournaments, or playing online across several devices. It is less suitable if your priority is walking around a school, choosing an anime partner, or following a long character campaign.

3. TAG FORCE GX is the closest structural match, but it is not out yet

Yu-Gi-Oh! TAG FORCE GX is the answer to the question “Is there a modern game like Tag Force?” Konami announced it on September 9, 2026 as a remake of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX TAG FORCE 3, with a scheduled release date of February 16, 2027. The announced platforms are Steam, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

Features that recreate the Tag Force loop

  • Duel Academy setting: the announcement centers on returning to the GX school environment.
  • Partner selection: more than 100 visually upgraded characters are documented, including partners for Tag Duels.
  • Student-life activities: the remake includes school-related mini-games rather than only menu-based battles.
  • Partner-based Tag Duels: progression is built around teaming up and dueling as a pair.
  • Online rooms: announced online modes include Tag and 1v1 rooms.
  • Expanded gallery: scenes from TAG FORCE 1 and 2 are included in the gallery.

Cards, scope and timing

The announced card count is over 3,800. That is a substantial GX-era selection, but it is intentionally narrower than the over-10,000-card totals advertised for Link Evolution and MASTER DUEL. The smaller pool should appeal to players who want the feel and period of GX rather than every modern card interaction.

February 16, 2027 is a future release date relative to this guide. Pre-orders and platform listings have been announced, but the game is not a currently available substitute on the date of this article. If you need something to play immediately, choose Link Evolution, MASTER DUEL, Early Days Collection or Duel Links.

Who should wait

Wait for TAG FORCE GX if the part you miss is the combination of anime characters, relationship-like partner progression, school activities and Tag Duels. No other researched option matches that structure as closely. Do not choose it solely for the biggest card pool or the most current competitive rules; its announced focus is the GX era.

4. EARLY DAYS COLLECTION is the compact retro option

Yu-Gi-Oh! EARLY DAYS COLLECTION is designed for players who want older games in a convenient package. Konami’s catalogue describes a collection of classic early Yu-Gi-Oh! RPGs and strategic card games, with a listed release date of February 25, 2025.

How it differs from Tag Force

These are earlier, more compact experiences rather than a modernized Duel Academy life simulator. Expect the appeal of retro rules, shorter individual games and historical variety. The catalogue description does not establish a comparable total playtime, card count or Tag Force-style partner system, so it is best selected for nostalgia and experimentation with early designs.

When it makes sense

  • You prefer several older formats to one large contemporary campaign.
  • You want sessions that feel more self-contained than an ongoing online service.
  • You are interested in Yu-Gi-Oh! history beyond the GX period.

5. DUEL LINKS is the lighter character-led alternative

Yu-Gi-Oh! DUEL LINKS brings competitive card battles to a character-driven digital format. Konami’s catalogue lists a January 11, 2017 release and describes dueling with Yugi, Kaiba and other franchise characters.

Its main appeal

The game is easier to approach in short sessions than a large console campaign. Familiar characters provide the framing, while the focus stays on digital battles. That makes it a reasonable choice when you want recognizable anime presentation without committing to an 80-hour story package.

Its trade-off for Tag Force fans

Character presence is not the same as the social-simulation structure of GX Tag Force. The documented description emphasizes competitive card battles; it does not promise the same school routine, partner bonding or free-roaming activity loop. Choose it for accessible character-led dueling, not as a one-for-one remake.

Which game has the best story mode?

Based on the documented features, Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution has the clearest long-form story offering. Konami advertises more than 80 hours and campaigns spanning the animated series through VRAINS. That makes it the strongest choice for a player who defines “story mode” as a large sequence of anime-linked duels.

TAG FORCE GX may be the better narrative fit for someone who defines story as living through a specific school year with a chosen partner. Its announced activities and character selection support that role-playing structure, but its release is scheduled for 2027. MASTER DUEL includes Solo Mode, yet its primary identity is competitive play rather than a single long anime campaign.

Which game has the biggest card pool?

Game Advertised card count What the number means for your choice
Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution Over 10,000 Broad series coverage and extensive deck experimentation in a purchased game
MASTER DUEL Over 10,000 Large modern pool connected to online competition and tournaments
TAG FORCE GX Over 3,800 Focused GX-era selection with less emphasis on the newest cards

These are promotional card-count figures from the respective official product information, not a guarantee that every card is immediately unlocked or legal in every mode. In particular, MASTER DUEL uses a free-to-play progression and purchase model, while the announced TAG FORCE GX count reflects its planned GX-focused scope.

You want ranked or tournament-oriented online play

Choose MASTER DUEL. Cross-platform play, cross-save and tournaments make it the most directly aligned with modern competitive play.

You want a long solo game without an online-service commitment

Choose Link Evolution. Its documented 80-plus-hour scope and series-spanning story provide a defined purchase rather than an evolving free-to-play ecosystem.

You want retro experiments

Choose EARLY DAYS COLLECTION. Its value is the selection of early RPG and strategic card-game designs, not a modern GX-style social loop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want quick character-led duels

Choose DUEL LINKS. It foregrounds familiar characters and competitive battles in a lighter digital format.

How to move from GX Tag Force without losing the appeal

  1. Identify the part you actually miss. If it is the school setting and partner relationship, prioritize TAG FORCE GX. If it is deck building and campaign progression, start with Link Evolution.
  2. Choose your rules era. Players who want current competitive rules should use MASTER DUEL. Players who prefer GX-era atmosphere should favor the announced remake or the retro collection.
  3. Decide whether you want a fixed purchase. Link Evolution is sold as a conventional game. MASTER DUEL is free to download but includes in-app purchases.
  4. Choose the platform before buying. Switch is the only researched platform with both physical and digital Link Evolution editions. The announced remake targets Steam, Switch and Switch 2.
  5. Start with the mode that matches your habit. Use a story campaign if you enjoyed Tag Force progression, Solo Mode if you need practice, or online rooms and tournaments if your priority is competition.

Physical Switch buying advice

If a cartridge matters, Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution is the documented current option. Konami lists a $39.99 MSRP for the Switch edition and says the physical package contains three official Yu-Gi-Oh! cards. The same product information identifies Switch availability as both physical and digital, while PS4, Xbox One and Steam are digital-only.

TAG FORCE GX has announced Switch and Switch 2 versions and pre-order information, but its February 16, 2027 launch is still in the future. A listing or pre-order is not the same as having a playable release today, so check the stated platform and release date when placing an order.

Final recommendation

Start with Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution if you want the most complete currently available substitute for GX Tag Force. It has the clearest long solo campaign, the broadest documented card count alongside MASTER DUEL, and a physical Switch edition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose MASTER DUEL instead when modern online competition is the deciding factor. Choose TAG FORCE GX when Duel Academy, partner selection and Tag Duels matter more than immediate access, and be prepared to wait until February 16, 2027. The retro collection and DUEL LINKS are worthwhile narrower choices for players who want older formats or shorter character-led sessions.
