Choose PlayFolder when new files arriving in a computer folder must join a local playlist automatically. How OBS PlayFolder handles new files
The OBS Forums resource page describes PlayFolder as a script that scans a chosen folder, builds a playlist, plays files sequentially, loops back to the beginning, and updates the playlist through OBS events when new files are added. The resource author describes its objective as a “simple, stable, and automated way” to play files from a folder; that is the author’s description, not independent reliability testing.

- Install OBS Studio and obtain the PlayFolder script from its OBS Forums resource page. Follow the resource’s installation instructions for the script version you download.
- In OBS, create or select the scene you will use for the stream. Add an OBS Media Source as required by PlayFolder. Do not substitute the VLC Video source for this workflow.
- Configure the script to use the folder containing your video files, following the options exposed by the installed script. Keep the files in a format OBS can play and test each one in the scene.
- Start playback and confirm the sequence, the return to the first file after the last one, and whether a newly added file appears in the playlist. Test file additions while the scene is active rather than assuming every file change will be handled as expected.
- Configure OBS to send its encoder output to YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Keep the key private.
- Check YouTube’s preview before going live. Confirm picture, audio, playback order, and that the selected stream is the one associated with the key.
PlayFolder is a community-contributed resource. Its page documents the intended folder scanning and playlist behavior, but does not establish independent compatibility testing across OBS versions, media formats, operating systems, or folder-change edge cases. Test your actual files and setup before using it for an event or unattended broadcast.

Use OBS’s VLC source for a manually maintained playlist
OBS’s built-in VLC Video source uses VLC libraries and can play a playlist with looping or shuffle. It is a different workflow from PlayFolder: the OBS documentation does not describe it as automatically rescanning a folder for newly added files.
- Install VLC before configuring the source. Match architectures: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene and add the media files to its playlist.
- Set the playlist’s loop or shuffle behavior to suit the broadcast. Review the list after adding or removing files; do not expect undocumented automatic folder updates.
- Configure YouTube’s stream URL and key in OBS, then verify the feed in YouTube’s preview.
If automatic pickup from a folder is essential, use a workflow documented to monitor one, such as PlayFolder with an OBS Media Source, and test the update behavior with your files.

When CasparCG or hosted playout makes more sense
CasparCG for broadcast-style clip queuing
CasparCG’s AMCP protocol can load a clip in the background and automatically start it after the foreground clip ends. Its documented automatic queue is limited to one clip per layer. Nebula’s CasparCG deployment documentation describes schedule-aware media transfer and transcoding to playout storage. These are advanced broadcast workflows, not a simple watch-folder setup for a typical OBS user. Castr TV Playout for hosted schedules
Castr describes uploaded media, schedules, and looping for its TV Playout service. Connect an encoder to YouTube Live
A playlist tool handles playback; the encoder handoff is a separate part of the setup. YouTube Help explains that “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” Its encoder instructions call for configuring the YouTube stream URL and stream key in the encoder. A tool’s playlist feature alone does not prove that it has a built-in YouTube destination.
