For most 24/7 music-video channels, start at 1080p30. It is a practical balance of picture detail and sustained upload demand for pre-rendered video with modest motion. Use 1440p30 if the source is genuinely 1440p and your connection can reliably sustain the higher bitrate. Choose 60 fps or 4K only when the source and viewing needs justify them—not just to advertise a larger number.
YouTube does not prescribe one best resolution for this kind of channel. Its current encoder recommendations are starting targets; your source quality, motion, encoder, and stable upload capacity determine what is sensible.

Choose a resolution that matches your video and upload connection
YouTube recommends choosing stream quality appropriate to the available connection, testing upload bitrate, and monitoring stream health. It transcodes live input into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks, so the resolution you send is not a guarantee that every viewer will watch at that resolution. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance gives the following ingest targets.

These are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates, not promised playback quality. Leave practical headroom beyond the target so normal fluctuations do not overwhelm the connection; test sustained upload capacity rather than relying on a brief peak. YouTube does not establish 1440p or 4K as universally superior for a 24/7 music channel.

When to choose 30 or 60 fps
For mostly static artwork, slow visualizers, or gently moving music-video footage, 30 fps is usually sufficient. That is practical guidance, not a YouTube rule. Use 60 fps when the actual source has meaningful high-frame-rate motion and your encoder and connection can handle the additional bitrate.

Do not upscale low-resolution footage simply to send a larger resolution. Upscaling cannot recover detail that is not in the source, and the available YouTube guidance does not establish that upscaling improves the viewer’s transcode.

Set up the encoder for a stable YouTube Live stream
- Match the output to the source. In YouTube Live Control Room, automatic detection of resolution and frame rate is the recommended default. A custom stream key allows manual selection. Choose a resolution and frame rate your source and encoder can produce consistently.
- Choose a supported codec and protocol. For YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS settings, supported video codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection between the encoder and Google’s servers.
- Use constant bitrate and sensible keyframes. Set video bitrate to the relevant target above and use constant bitrate (CBR). Set keyframes every 2 seconds; YouTube says they must not exceed 4 seconds.
- Test the actual program before committing to a long run. Run a preflight with representative audio and video movement. Check stream health and read Live Control Room messages while live; a static test image alone may not reveal problems that occur during busier scenes or louder audio.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation exposes health and configuration issues such as low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and missing audio. Treat these as operational clues, not evidence that one resolution is best for music content.
Plan for archives and 24/7 operations
A continuous stream is not the same as a reliably saved replay. YouTube Help says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; YouTube recommends keeping a local recording backup. If replay archives or rewind matter, plan to end and restart sessions before the 12-hour threshold and record locally. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish how a particular restart cadence affects reach, notifications, or monetization, so do not assume a schedule will improve those outcomes.
Clear music rights before you stream
Technical quality does not grant permission to broadcast music. YouTube’s livestream terms make the provider responsible for holding the rights needed to exploit live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other rights participants. Confirm that your permissions cover the music, territories, and live use in your stream.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A placeholder may replace the stream, and YouTube may interrupt or terminate it if the match continues. Even when you have a license, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist to prevent interruption. YouTube explains this in its live-streaming copyright guidance. Resolve any allowlisting requirement with the rights holder; lowering or raising resolution will not solve a rights issue.
