For XRP you plan to hold for years, use a self-custody hardware wallet such as the Ledger Nano X. Its private keys remain isolated on the device, and each transaction must be physically approved before it is broadcast. For frequent XRP Ledger payments, token use, and dApp connections, use Xaman, a non-custodial mobile wallet built for the XRP Ledger. A custodial service such as Uphold is easier for buying, selling, and converting to fiat, but the provider controls the keys.

The practical answer is usually a two-wallet setup: keep long-term funds on hardware and a limited spending balance in Xaman. The right choice depends on who controls the keys, how often you transact, whether you need XRPL features, and how much recovery responsibility you are prepared to accept.

The custody decision comes before the wallet brand

An XRP wallet does not store coins in an app or on a device. XRP remains recorded on the XRP Ledger; the wallet stores or accesses the secret keys that authorize transactions from your account. Whoever controls those keys controls the funds.

Custodial wallets

With a custodial service, a company holds the keys and shows your balance in its account system. You sign in with the service’s authentication method rather than approving every transaction with your own secret key. This can simplify purchases, sales, and fiat conversion, but withdrawals can be delayed, restricted, or unavailable if the service has an outage, account review, regional limitation, or policy change. Uphold is an example of this model.

  • Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.

Non-custodial software wallets

A non-custodial wallet gives you the secret keys. Xaman is described in XRP Ledger educational material as a non-custodial, XRPL-specific wallet. The keys are managed on an internet-connected phone, so you retain control but also carry responsibility for the phone’s security, backups, and recovery phrase.

Hardware wallets

A hardware wallet keeps the signing keys in a dedicated physical device. The companion application can display balances and prepare transactions, while the device performs the signing. Ledger’s XRP documentation says supported Nano devices isolate private keys and require physical validation on the device before a transaction is broadcast. This separation reduces the chance that malware on a computer can extract the key, although it cannot protect you from approving a fraudulent address or losing the recovery backup.

Best XRP wallets by use case

Use case Best fit Custody Main strength Main trade-off
Holding XRP for years Ledger Nano X or another supported hardware wallet You control the keys Keys remain isolated while transactions are approved on the device Less convenient for frequent spending; you must protect the device and recovery backup
Frequent XRPL payments, tokens, and dApps Xaman You control the keys XRPL-native mobile workflow and ecosystem support Keys are used through an internet-connected phone
General multichain mobile use Trust Wallet You control the keys One app for users who hold several networks Broader scope can mean fewer XRPL-specific workflows, and the keys remain on an online device
Buying, selling, or fiat conversion Uphold or a comparable custodial service The provider controls the keys Exchange-like convenience and account-based access You accept counterparty, withdrawal, and account-access risk
Hardware alternative Trezor; Tangem may also be considered after confirming current XRP support Generally self-custody when configured as a hardware wallet Physical signing for users who prefer another device ecosystem Supported XRP features, regional availability, and current integrations must be checked before purchase

No dated, independently audited study establishes that one brand is objectively the safest XRP wallet or has the lowest loss rate. Compare the custody model and workflow instead of treating a universal ranking as proven fact.

Ledger Nano X for long-term XRP storage

The Ledger Nano X is the clearest fit when your priority is minimizing online exposure for XRP that you do not expect to move often. Ledger’s official XRP material describes the device as supported for XRP and explains that the private keys stay isolated on the hardware while the companion Ledger Wallet app manages the account. The transaction is not complete until you confirm the details on the device itself.

Why it suits a long-term balance

  • The signing key is kept on a dedicated device rather than exposed to the operating system of your everyday computer or phone.
  • A transaction prepared in the companion app still requires physical confirmation on the Ledger device.
  • You can keep the hardware disconnected when it is not needed, reducing opportunities for accidental signing.
  • The model separates a viewing and management interface from the key that authorizes spending.

What it does not solve

  • If you approve a malware-altered or mistyped destination, the hardware will sign the transaction you accepted; it cannot reverse an XRP transfer.
  • A lost, destroyed, or exposed recovery phrase can be as serious as a lost device. The phrase is the backup for the account and must never be photographed, typed into a website, or stored in a cloud note.
  • Hardware adds friction. You need the device, its unlock method, and the companion software when you want to send XRP.

Xaman for everyday XRP Ledger activity

Xaman is designed around the XRP Ledger rather than around a general collection of networks. XRPL educational guidance identifies it as non-custodial and suitable for daily transactions. That makes it useful when you regularly send or receive XRP, interact with XRPL tokens, or connect to XRPL dApps.

Where Xaman is strongest

  • Fast access from a phone for routine payments.
  • XRPL-focused account and token interactions without switching between several network modes.
  • Self-custody: you authorize transactions with keys that you control rather than an exchange account.
  • A practical spending wallet that can hold only the amount you expect to use.

Its security trade-off

Because the wallet operates on a connected phone, the phone’s screen lock, operating-system security, malicious apps, backups, and recovery handling matter. Treat Xaman as a working wallet, not automatically as the place for your entire long-term balance. Keep a separate recovery backup offline and do not enter it into a support chat, browser form, or unsolicited link.

When Trust Wallet, Uphold, Trezor, or Tangem makes sense

Trust Wallet

Trust Wallet can suit someone who wants a broad, multichain mobile application and accepts software-wallet exposure. It is a reasonable convenience choice when XRP is one of several assets, but it is not a substitute for hardware isolation when the central objective is long-term cold storage.

Uphold

Uphold and similar services are useful for exchange-like actions: purchasing XRP, selling it, or converting between XRP and fiat where the service operates. The convenience comes from account-based access and an integrated trading flow. The provider remains the custodian, so the balance is an IOU from the service until you withdraw to an address whose keys you control. Confirm that XRP withdrawals and any required destination-tag workflow are available in your jurisdiction before relying on the service for storage.

Trezor

The XRP Ledger Learning Portal names Trezor as a hardware-wallet option. Check the current supported-device list, XRP application, and companion software before buying because support can vary by model and region. The same hardware-wallet rules apply: verify the device, create the recovery backup offline, and test a small transfer.

Tangem

Tangem appears in current comparison coverage, but a definitive recommendation requires confirmation of current primary-source XRP support and the exact recovery process for the model sold in your region. Treat it as an alternative to investigate, not as an automatically equivalent replacement for a documented Ledger or Trezor setup.

Choose with this decision framework

  1. Decide who must control the keys. If you need direct control and can protect a backup, choose self-custody. If you prefer account recovery and integrated fiat trading, a custodian may be acceptable for a limited working balance.
  2. Measure transaction frequency. Long gaps between transfers favor hardware. Daily payments and dApp sessions favor an XRPL-native mobile wallet.
  3. Identify the XRPL features you need. Confirm support for the tokens, dApps, and signing flows you actually use; a general wallet may not expose every XRPL workflow.
  4. Assess recovery responsibility. Self-custody means you, not a help desk, must preserve the recovery phrase and operate the replacement process if a device or phone fails.
  5. Check regional access. Custodial buying, selling, fiat conversion, and withdrawals can differ by country. Hardware availability and software integrations can also vary by region.
  6. Plan transfer friction. Exchanges may require a destination tag in addition to the XRP address. A wallet-to-wallet transfer normally uses the destination address, but always follow the receiving service’s instructions.

Set up a hardware wallet for XRP safely

  1. Buy through an official or trusted channel. Avoid a device whose packaging, seal, or setup instructions suggest prior use. Do not accept a recovery phrase supplied by a seller; the device must generate your phrase during setup.
  2. Install the official companion application from the manufacturer’s verified source. Check the publisher and domain carefully. Do not follow installation links from unsolicited messages or search advertisements that imitate support.
  3. Initialize the device yourself. Create a new wallet on the device and choose its unlock code. If the device displays an existing phrase, stop and return it rather than adopting that phrase.
  4. Write the recovery phrase offline. Record every word in the displayed order on a durable offline medium. Keep the backup away from cameras, cloud storage, email, password managers, and anyone else. Anyone with the phrase can recreate the account.
  5. Complete the device’s recovery check. Use the hardware’s verification flow to confirm that your written copy matches. A single transcription error can make recovery fail.
  6. Install XRP support and add the account in the companion app. The app can show the address and prepare a transaction, but the device remains the authority for signing.
  7. Verify the receiving address on the hardware screen. Compare the address shown on the trusted receiving service with the address displayed by the device, not just the computer screen.
  8. Send a small test amount. Wait until the transaction is visible and accepted before transferring the larger balance. This catches address, network, and destination-tag mistakes while the exposure is limited.
  9. Disconnect and store the device securely. Keep the recovery backup in a separate protected location. Do not store the backup beside the device if one incident could destroy both.

Set up Xaman for a spending balance

  1. Install the genuine application. Use the platform’s official app listing and verify the publisher. Ignore direct-message “support” accounts asking you to import keys.
  2. Create a new non-custodial account or import one only when you understand the recovery implications. The wallet should show that you, rather than a service, control the secret key.
  3. Back up the recovery material offline. Follow Xaman’s current in-app instructions, write the backup without photographing it, and test that you can identify the correct backup before funding the account.
  4. Enable the phone’s strongest available lock and update the operating system. Remove unknown applications and avoid using the wallet on a rooted or jailbroken device.
  5. Fund the wallet with a small transfer first. Confirm that the address and balance are correct before moving the amount intended for routine use.
  6. Keep the balance limited. Move surplus XRP back to the hardware wallet rather than allowing a daily-use phone to become the repository for your full long-term position.

Send and receive XRP without common mistakes

Before sending from any wallet

  • Copy the destination address from the recipient’s current instructions, then compare it character by character with the address shown on the signing device or wallet confirmation screen.
  • Check whether the recipient is an exchange or other custodial service that requires a destination tag. Enter the tag exactly where the service requests it; an address alone may not credit the account.
  • Confirm that you are using the XRP Ledger account and not an address format for another network.
  • Start with a small test transaction when sending to a new recipient, device, or service.
  • Review the final amount and destination on the hardware screen when using a hardware wallet. Never approve solely because a desktop or phone display looks correct.

Receiving to self-custody

  1. Open the receiving wallet and display its XRP address.
  2. If the sender is an exchange, provide any destination tag exactly as displayed by that exchange; if the wallet does not use tags, do not invent one.
  3. Send a test amount and wait for the ledger confirmation shown by both sides.
  4. Save the transaction ID or confirmation details until the recipient has credited the funds.

Sending to an exchange

  1. Open the exchange’s XRP deposit page and select XRP on the XRP Ledger.
  2. Copy both the deposit address and destination tag when one is provided.
  3. Paste them into the sending wallet, then verify the address and tag on the final confirmation screen.
  4. Send a small test amount if the exchange or recipient is new to you.
  5. Do not reuse a tag from an earlier deposit page without checking that it is still current.

A two-wallet arrangement reduces practical friction

For many holders, the most workable arrangement is not choosing one wallet for every job. Keep the principal balance on the hardware wallet and transfer only a defined spending amount to Xaman. Use the hardware wallet for savings, larger transfers, and any transaction you can schedule. Use Xaman for routine payments and XRPL applications. Keep a small custodial balance only when the convenience of immediate trading or fiat conversion is worth accepting third-party control.

Separate addresses also make review easier: an unexpected transaction in the spending wallet does not expose the hardware wallet’s entire balance. This is a workflow benefit, not a guarantee; every wallet still depends on accurate addresses, secure backups, and careful signing.

Exchange custody versus a hardware wallet

Question Custodial exchange account Self-custody hardware wallet
Who holds the secret key? The service You, inside the device
How do you recover access? Usually through the provider’s account and identity procedures With the device and its offline recovery phrase
How quickly can you trade? Usually designed for immediate account-based trading where available You must connect the device, prepare, review, and sign a transaction
What happens during a provider restriction or outage? Withdrawals or account access may be interrupted The provider is not required to release your keys, but you must protect your own device and backup
What is the central failure mode? Counterparty, account-access, withdrawal, and regional-service risk Lost or exposed recovery phrase, damaged device, or approving the wrong transaction

Keeping XRP on an exchange is therefore a convenience decision, not a form of cold storage. A common compromise is to use the exchange only for the amount needed to trade or convert and withdraw the remainder to self-custody.

Recovery and security rules that matter most

  • Never share a secret phrase. Legitimate wallet support does not need it. A request for the phrase is an attempt to take the account.
  • Use independent backups. Keep the written backup offline and in a location protected from the same theft, fire, or water event as the device.
  • Verify on the signing device. Address-poisoning and clipboard-changing malware can alter what appears on a computer or phone.
  • Keep software current through official channels. Updates should come from the verified wallet or device publisher, not from a pop-up or direct message.
  • Limit connected-wallet permissions. Review dApp connections and disconnect ones you no longer use. Never sign a transaction whose purpose and destination you cannot explain.
  • Document your recovery plan privately. Record which device, account type, and wallet application are needed, without recording the secret phrase in the same document.
  • Rehearse before an emergency. Confirm that your backup is readable and that you understand the legitimate recovery process before the device fails.

Troubleshooting common XRP wallet problems

The recipient says the transfer is missing

Check the transaction status and destination address first. If the destination was an exchange, verify the destination tag as well as the address. Send the transaction ID to the exchange through its official support channel; never send your recovery phrase or approve a “verification” transaction.

A hardware wallet will not sign

Confirm that the device is unlocked, the XRP application is open, and the companion app is communicating with the device. Reconnect using the manufacturer’s official troubleshooting steps. If the recovery phrase is still safe, a device replacement can be performed later; do not enter the phrase into a website claiming to repair the device.

The phone is lost or replaced

Install the genuine Xaman application on the replacement phone and use its documented recovery process with your offline backup. If the backup is unavailable or exposed, treat the account as at risk and move funds to a newly generated, secure account as soon as you can do so safely.

An exchange will not accept the deposit

Confirm that the service currently supports XRP deposits in your region, that you selected the XRP Ledger, and that the address and destination tag match the current deposit instructions. A service may temporarily disable deposits even when the blockchain is operating normally.

Costs, availability, and evidence limits

The supplied wallet documentation does not establish a universal total cost of ownership, a dated theft-rate comparison, or a guaranteed availability list for every country. Hardware purchase prices, exchange fees, fiat rails, supported models, and XRP withdrawal rules change by region and over time. Check the current official product, wallet, and service pages before paying or transferring a significant balance.

The evidence supports a workflow recommendation rather than an absolute safety ranking: hardware signing is appropriate for long-term storage, Xaman is appropriate for frequent XRPL use, and custodial services are appropriate only when their convenience justifies giving up direct key control.

Recommended setup

For a holder who wants both security and usability, initialize a supported hardware wallet such as Ledger Nano X, create and protect its offline recovery backup, and move the long-term XRP balance there after a small test transfer. Install Xaman separately, back it up offline, and fund it with only the amount needed for everyday transfers and XRPL applications. Keep any exchange balance temporary and operational rather than treating it as your savings wallet.
