Best Xbox Series X|S Graphics and Performance Settings for Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey

Use the original Xbox One version as a 30-FPS game on Xbox Series X|S. Set the console to the television or monitor’s native output, use a 60 Hz signal for normal play, and treat HDR as optional rather than guaranteed. Xbox Series X|S backward compatibility can improve selected games, but there is no verified quality/performance toggle or automatic 4K/60-FPS mode for this release.

Series X follows the Xbox One X compatibility path, while Series S runs the Xbox One S version. Independent Xbox One X observations reported a stable 30 FPS and approximately 1080p, so higher console output resolution should not be mistaken for a confirmed change to the game’s internal rendering.

What version runs on Xbox Series X|S?

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey launched for the Xbox One family, including Xbox One X, and the Xbox Store lists it as playable on Xbox Series X|S. On current consoles, that means you are normally running the Xbox One release through backward compatibility rather than a dedicated Series X|S edition.

Microsoft describes backward-compatibility enhancements as features that may include higher resolutions, faster frame rates, improved texture filtering, more consistent frame rates, faster loading, FPS Boost, or Auto HDR. Those are title-specific possibilities, not a promise that every compatible game receives every enhancement.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For this game, the available Xbox One X observations are the useful baseline. Windows Central estimated approximately 1080p at 30 frames per second in a 2019 test and reported no major Xbox One X resolution or frame-rate enhancement. A separate Gamernews test also described a stable 30 FPS. No publisher-issued specification establishes a guaranteed Series X|S render resolution, frame-rate target, HDR mode, or in-game graphics menu for the original release.

That distinction matters when choosing settings. A Series X set to output 4K UHD can send a 4K signal to the television while the backward-compatible game still renders internally at a lower resolution. The output setting controls the console’s video signal; it does not certify the game’s internal pixel count.

Recommended settings at a glance

Setting Xbox Series X Xbox Series S Why
Compatibility path Xbox One X version Xbox One S version Microsoft identifies these as the respective backward-compatibility baselines.
Console output 4K UHD when connected to a 4K television; otherwise use the display’s native supported mode Use 1440p when that is the display’s supported target, or 1080p for a full-HD screen Matches the signal to the panel without claiming a particular internal game resolution.
Refresh rate 60 Hz for ordinary television or monitor use 60 Hz for ordinary television or monitor use The documented game presentation is 30 FPS; a 120 Hz signal does not create a 120-FPS mode.
HDR Optional; keep it enabled only if the picture looks correct Optional; keep it enabled only if the picture looks correct Auto HDR is selective, and the cited reviews do not establish native HDR support for this release.

Best Xbox Series X settings

Choose 4K UHD only as the output target

With a 4K television, open Settings > General > TV & display options and select 4K UHD under Display resolution if the console and television report that capability. This lets the Series X handle output scaling and gives the television a signal suited to its panel.

Do not describe that setting as a 4K mode for Ancestors. The documented Xbox One X test estimated about 1080p, and no official technical sheet confirms that the backward-compatible version renders at 4K. If your screen is 1440p or 1080p, select the panel’s supported native resolution instead of forcing an unnecessary conversion.

Leave the refresh rate at 60 Hz

In the same TV and display menu, choose 60 Hz for standard television and monitor play. The observed game behavior is a 30-FPS presentation, so a 120 Hz console signal does not turn it into a 60- or 120-FPS title. A 120 Hz television may still accept the signal, but the game’s animation cadence remains governed by the compatible release.

Using 60 Hz also avoids making the display run a refresh mode that provides no documented benefit here. If you use a monitor whose normal desktop mode is 120 Hz, switching the Xbox to 60 Hz for this game is reasonable; the important point is that refresh-rate output and game frame rate are separate settings.

Test HDR instead of assuming it is supported

HDR should be conditional. Xbox backward compatibility can provide Auto HDR for selected titles, but Microsoft treats that as a selective feature, and the cited reviews do not establish native HDR support for the original Xbox release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enable HDR only if the television produces a balanced image after calibration. Look for clipped bright skies, gray-looking shadows, crushed dark detail, or colors that appear less natural than in SDR. If any of those occur, disable HDR for the console or use the display’s SDR output for this game. A correct SDR image is preferable to a nominal HDR label with poor tone mapping.

Do not search for a missing performance mode

There is no authoritative settings list showing selectable Quality, Performance, Resolution, or Frame Rate modes for this release. The Xbox One X observations did not identify a major enhancement, and the available material does not document an in-game toggle. If the game’s menus contain no graphics selector, that is expected rather than a configuration error.

Best Xbox Series S settings

Use the Xbox One S compatibility baseline

Microsoft states that Series S runs the Xbox One S version of backward-compatible games. That is the key difference from Series X: Series S is not using the Xbox One X rendering path for this title. Expect the console to target a lower output class and do not use Series X discussions about 4K output as evidence of Series S internal rendering.

Match the output to your screen

For a 1440p monitor or television, open Settings > General > TV & display options and choose 1440p when the console confirms that mode. For a 1080p television, select 1080p. Either choice is a sensible signal path; neither one guarantees that the game itself renders at that exact resolution.

Series S can be connected to a 4K television, but selecting 4K output does not convert the Xbox One S version into a confirmed 4K presentation. If your television handles 1440p cleanly, that is often the more transparent target for this console; use the mode that produces the clearest interface and the fewest scaling artifacts on your particular display.

Keep the same 60 Hz and optional-HDR policy

Set 60 Hz for ordinary play. The compatibility baseline does not create a documented higher frame-rate mode, and changing the output to 120 Hz cannot supply one.

Apply the same HDR test used on Series X: retain HDR only when the result is visibly correct, and return to SDR when highlights, shadows, or color balance look worse. No cited source confirms native HDR behavior for this Xbox release.

Series X versus Series S for this game

Comparison point Series X Series S
Backward-compatible source Xbox One X version Xbox One S version
Practical display target 4K UHD output for a 4K panel; otherwise the panel’s native supported mode 1440p for a supported 1440p panel or 1080p for a full-HD panel
Expected image sharpness Potentially cleaner output because of the stronger console and Xbox One X path, but no official Series-specific render resolution is stated Lower-resolution compatibility path than Series X; exact internal resolution is not stated
Frame-rate consistency Independent Xbox One X observations reported 30 FPS, including one report calling it stable No separate Series S measurement is established; do not assume a higher frame rate than the compatible release provides
HDR Optional; Auto HDR is selective and native HDR support is not established Optional under the same qualification
Dedicated post-2026 build A December 8, 2026 Series X|S release was reported; its specifications are not established in the current information

Step-by-step setup on either console

  1. Start the television or monitor first and select the HDMI input used by the Xbox.
  2. On the Xbox, open Settings, choose General, then TV & display options.
  3. Set Resolution to the display’s supported native target: 4K UHD for a 4K screen on Series X, 1440p for a compatible 1440p screen on Series S, or 1080p for a full-HD screen. Accept the test image only if text and edges remain stable.
  4. Set Refresh rate to 60 Hz for regular television and monitor use.
  5. Open the console’s video or display calibration controls and run the HDR calibration only if you intend to test HDR. Compare the result with SDR before deciding which looks better.
  6. Launch Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey and inspect its options. If there is no graphics, quality, resolution, or performance selector, leave the game at its default; do not infer that a hidden 60-FPS mode exists.
  7. Play a repeatable scene with foliage, camera movement, and dark areas. Judge motion consistency and shadow detail from the actual image rather than from the console’s output label.

How to troubleshoot a soft or uneven picture

The image looks soft on a 4K television

First verify the HDMI input’s picture mode and disable excessive television sharpening or motion processing. Then confirm the Xbox output is set to the panel’s supported mode. If the game still looks softer than newer Series X titles, that is consistent with an older Xbox One rendering path; 4K output cannot add detail that the game did not render.

HDR looks washed out or too dark

Return to Settings > General > TV & display options, run the HDR calibration again, and compare the same scene with HDR disabled. If SDR has better highlight and shadow detail, keep HDR off for this title. Auto HDR is not universal, so the presence of an HDR-capable console does not establish that this game has a correctly mapped HDR image.

The console reports 120 Hz but motion is not 120 FPS

This is normal. The display refresh setting describes how often the console sends a signal; it does not change a game’s frame-rate cap. The documented observations for the compatible release are 30 FPS, and no source verifies a selectable faster mode.

Series S looks different from Series X

Check which console version is being compared. Series S uses the Xbox One S compatibility version, while Series X uses the Xbox One X path. Different image scaling and sharpness are therefore expected even when both consoles are connected to the same television.

The game does not appear in the expected enhanced list

Backward compatibility does not require a title to receive FPS Boost, Auto HDR, a resolution patch, or a dedicated graphics menu. The Xbox Store’s playable listing confirms compatibility, not a particular enhancement package.

Cloud play and installation considerations

The Xbox Store listing advertises cloud play with eligible Game Pass plans. Cloud play introduces streaming variables—network latency, video compression, and the service’s own output pipeline—that are separate from local Series X|S graphics settings. For the most predictable input response and image quality, compare settings with the locally installed compatible game when that option is available.

What the reported December 8, 2026 release could change

A report dated October 15, 2026 said that a dedicated Series X|S upgrade or remaster is planned for December 8, 2026. That date is after the October 18, 2026 information point used for these recommendations, so it is not the baseline for the currently documented Xbox One release.

The later build could change resolution, frame rate, HDR behavior, loading, or menu options, but none of those specifications are established here. After installing it, open the game’s own settings, read its patch notes, and check whether the title is identified as a separate Series X|S version rather than the backward-compatible Xbox One application.

Until that release is available and its technical details are documented, keep the conservative configuration: native display output, 60 Hz, HDR only when it looks correct, and no assumption of a 4K/60-FPS performance mode.

Quick checklist

  • Use the Xbox One X compatibility path on Series X and the Xbox One S path on Series S.
  • Choose 4K UHD output for a 4K display on Series X; choose 1440p or 1080p on Series S according to the connected panel.
  • Use 60 Hz for normal play. A 120 Hz signal does not make this documented 30-FPS release run at 120 FPS.
  • Enable HDR only after checking the actual picture; native HDR support for the original Xbox release is not established.
  • Do not expect a verified in-game Quality, Performance, or Resolution toggle.
  • Use local installation when you want to eliminate cloud-streaming variables.
  • Recheck the game’s own notes and menus if the reported December 8, 2026 Series X|S build becomes available.
