Finished a major Xbox release and wondering what to start next? Match your next game to the experience you want: Avowed for a fantasy RPG, South of Midnight for a focused story adventure, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 for reactive turn-based combat, Grounded 2 for shared survival, Ninja Gaiden 4 for demanding action, or Gears of War: Reloaded for cover-shooter multiplayer. Keeper is the unusual choice when you want a shorter, more experimental adventure.
“Xbox exclusive” now usually means an Xbox ecosystem release rather than a game locked to one console. The recommendations below may also be available on Windows PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Steam, Battle.net or PlayStation 5. Microsoft announced in 2024 that four Xbox games would move to rival consoles, and Xbox head Phil Spencer said, “I think when they come out, it’ll make sense.” Treat exclusivity as a dated platform-status label and check the current store listing before buying.

How to choose your next game
Start with the kind of session you want, then confirm how you can access it. A large release often leaves players with one of five needs: another long role-playing game, a tightly directed story, a different combat system, a co-op game for friends, or a technically demanding action challenge.

Use the genre matches in the table below rather than assuming the biggest game is the best follow-up.
- Check the access model. Several recommendations are day-one Game Pass titles; Grounded 2 entered Game Preview, which is a different status from a finished release.
- Check every platform you use. A Series X|S launch can be accompanied by PC, cloud, Steam, Battle.net or PlayStation 5 versions.
- Verify current availability. Release dates and Game Pass catalog membership can change, and a listing made for a previous date may no longer be current.

This table uses the platform and access information announced by Xbox for each title. “Xbox ecosystem” means Series X|S, Windows PC and/or Xbox Cloud Gaming as listed by Xbox; it does not imply strict hardware exclusivity.

The best next plays
Avowed: choose this for another fantasy RPG
Avowed is the clearest follow-up when the game you just finished left you wanting another fantasy world, party-based decision and exploration. Xbox’s Developer_Direct 2025 listed it as a February 18, 2025 launch for Series X|S, Windows PC, Battle.net, Steam and cloud, with day-one Game Pass.
The important distinction is tone and commitment. Avowed gives you an RPG-sized change of pace without requiring you to replay the same kind of modern military, superhero or science-fiction blockbuster. Its appeal is the ability to make choices and see the adventure through your own decisions. Pick it after a major release when you still want character progression and a substantial setting, but want a different fictional vocabulary.
- Best for: solo players who want fantasy role-playing and choices.
- Good transition from: a large action RPG or open-world game when you want another world rather than another shooter.
- Access advantage: day-one Game Pass and cloud availability reduce the risk of committing to a full purchase before you know the fit.
- Platform caveat: the announced release includes PC, Battle.net, Steam and cloud, so it is an Xbox ecosystem exclusive rather than a Series X-only title.
South of Midnight: choose this for a directed story
South of Midnight suits the player who has just completed a sprawling release and wants a more guided adventure. Xbox describes it as a story-led, third-person action game, released April 8, 2025 on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam and cloud, with day-one Game Pass.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIts third-person perspective and narrative focus make it a useful reset between enormous open worlds. You can select it when the priority is seeing a complete story unfold instead of managing another huge checklist. The Game Pass launch also makes it practical for a short trial: start it when you have a free evening, then continue only if the tone and pacing suit you.

Unexpected allies will also cross your path, as three officers join you on your journey as part of the main narrative. More surprises await, such as new sea shanties, pets, a photo mode, and more.
- Best for: solo players who value a directed narrative and third-person action.
- Good transition from: a lengthy open-world game that has exhausted your appetite for side activities.
- Access advantage: day-one Game Pass, PC and cloud support.
- Platform caveat: it is not limited to Series X|S hardware; Xbox also announced Windows PC and Steam versions.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: choose this for a different combat rhythm
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the choice when you want a role-playing game but not another real-time action system. Its “Reactive Turn-Based” combat asks you to engage with turns actively rather than treating them as a pause between menu selections. Xbox describes its setting as a fantasy version of late-19th-century France.
Xbox listed an April 24, 2025 launch on Series X|S and PC with day-one Game Pass. That combination makes it a strong palate cleanser after a major real-time release: the party-based structure and turn order change how you evaluate attacks, defense and timing. Choose it when you want a game that rewards learning a system rather than simply increasing your character’s equipment.
- Best for: players who enjoy turn-based planning with active reactions.
- Good transition from: a real-time action game when you want deliberate encounters and a distinctive setting.
- Access advantage: day-one Game Pass on Xbox and PC.
- Platform caveat: Xbox’s announcement names Series X|S and PC; check the current listing for any later platform changes.
Grounded 2: choose this for co-op survival
Grounded 2 changes the question from “What should I play next?” to “Who can I play with?” It is a co-op survival game set in Brookhollow Park. Xbox says Game Preview began July 29, 2025, with Series X|S, PC, cloud and day-one Game Pass support. The sequel adds rideable Buggies, giving groups a way to move through its scaled-up environment together.
Game Preview matters. You are choosing an evolving version rather than a product whose feature set is guaranteed to be final. That can be a benefit if you enjoy watching a co-op game grow, but it also means you should confirm the current build, supported save behavior and any participation requirements before starting a long shared world.

Xbox says the game was shaped by more than 25 million players and counting as of 2025. That is a player-count statement from Xbox, not an independent sales figure, so use it as context for the series’ reach rather than as a quality score.
- Best for: two or more players who want shared gathering, building and survival tasks.
- Good transition from: a solo blockbuster when you want an ongoing social game with repeat sessions.
- Access advantage: day-one Game Pass, cloud play and PC support.
- Important limitation: Game Preview means development status can affect features and the long-term shape of a save.
Keeper: choose this for something genuinely unusual
Keeper is the recommendation for players who do not want another familiar blockbuster formula. Xbox describes it as an experimental third-person adventure from Double Fine. Its protagonist is a walking lighthouse accompanied by a seabird, an intentionally strange premise that immediately separates it from conventional military, fantasy or sports releases.
Xbox lists an October 17, 2025 arrival on Series X|S, PC, cloud and Steam, with Game Pass availability. Choose Keeper when novelty matters more than scale. It is especially useful after a major release with dozens of systems competing for your attention: an unusual central character gives you a clear reason to play rather than asking you to learn another version of the same genre.
- Best for: solo players looking for an experimental third-person adventure.
- Good transition from: any massive, system-heavy release when you want a focused change of subject.
- Access advantage: Game Pass and cloud support, alongside PC and Steam versions.
- Platform caveat: the listed platforms extend beyond Xbox hardware.
Ninja Gaiden 4: choose this for demanding action
Ninja Gaiden 4 is the specialist pick for players who want to be tested. Xbox highlights seamless weapon switching, Obliteration Techniques and Bloodbind Ninjutsu. Those named systems point to a combat-focused game in which execution and adaptation matter more than simply collecting upgrades.

Its announced launch was October 21, 2025 on Series X|S, PC, cloud, Steam and PlayStation 5, with Game Pass. That platform list makes the exclusivity label especially important: it is an Xbox ecosystem release, not a console-only game. Pick it after a major release when you want shorter, skill-intensive sessions and are willing to learn enemy patterns instead of relaxing with a low-pressure adventure.
- Best for: experienced action players who want a demanding combat loop.
- Good transition from: a story-heavy game when you want mechanics and mastery to take priority.
- Access advantage: Game Pass, cloud and PC options make it easy to test the combat before buying.
- Platform caveat: Xbox’s announcement includes PlayStation 5 as well as PC and Steam.
Gears of War: Reloaded: choose this for cover-shooter heritage
Gears of War: Reloaded is the safest recommendation when the major release you finished was not a shooter but you still want immediate, readable action. It preserves the series’ cover-shooter identity and supports both a campaign and multiplayer. Xbox announced an August 26, 2025 release for Series X|S, PC, cloud, Steam and PlayStation 5.
It is also the clearest technical showcase in this group. Xbox specifies 4K textures and a 60 frames-per-second campaign, while multiplayer is listed at 120 frames per second. Those are stated targets for this title, not a promise that every Xbox game runs at those settings. Cross-play and cross-progression let players on the listed ecosystems play together and carry progression between supported platforms.

- Best for: players who want a structured campaign, competitive sessions or co-op shooting.
- Good transition from: an RPG or adventure game when you need responsive cover, weapons and team play.
- Technical point: the cited Xbox specifications are 4K textures, 60 FPS campaign and 120 FPS multiplayer.
- Platform caveat: PlayStation 5 is part of the announced platform list, so “exclusive” here describes the Xbox ecosystem launch rather than hardware ownership.
Games to keep on your radar
Fable
Xbox’s 2026 showcase gives Fable a February 23, 2027 launch. The announced platforms are Xbox Series X|S, PC and cloud, with Game Pass availability. It is the forward-looking fantasy option in this list: if Avowed satisfies your immediate RPG need but you want another major Xbox fantasy release later, mark this date and recheck the listing as launch approaches.

Halo: Campaign Evolved
Xbox announced July 28, 2026 for Halo: Campaign Evolved, with up to five days of early access and day-one access through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Because that date has passed as of October 18, 2026, treat it as a current release rather than an upcoming one. The early-access allowance was tied to the launch offer, so verify the present edition and subscription terms before purchasing.
Gears of War: E-Day
Xbox describes Gears of War: E-Day as an origin story about Emergence Day and lists Xbox Series X|S, PC, cloud and Game Pass. The announcement gives an October 6 launch date but does not establish the year in the available material; confirm the year and current release status before planning a playthrough.
Beast of Reincarnation
Xbox’s optimized page describes Beast of Reincarnation as an action RPG from Game Freak that blends real-time and turn-based combat. The available announcement does not provide a release date in this guide’s source material, so it belongs on a watch list rather than a dated purchase plan.

Match the recommendation to the game you just finished
| If your last game was… | Start with… | Why the switch works |
|---|---|---|
| A huge open-world RPG | South of Midnight or Keeper | Both offer a more directed, unusual adventure instead of another sprawling checklist. |
| A real-time action RPG | Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 | Reactive turn-based combat changes the pace and the way you make decisions. |
| A solo story game | Grounded 2 | Co-op survival turns the next session into a shared, ongoing activity. |
| A relaxed adventure | Ninja Gaiden 4 | Weapon switching, Obliteration Techniques and Bloodbind Ninjutsu put execution first. |
| A turn-based game | Avowed or South of Midnight | Both return you to real-time, third-person or choice-led adventure play. |
| A shooter | Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 or Keeper | One replaces gunplay with reactive turns; the other prioritizes an experimental premise. |
Game Pass, cloud and purchase decisions
Game Pass is the most flexible way to sample this list because Xbox explicitly announced day-one inclusion for Avowed, South of Midnight, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Grounded 2 and Ninja Gaiden 4, while Keeper and Gears of War: Reloaded are also listed with Game Pass availability. The exact catalog depends on your plan and can change over time, so confirm the title in the Xbox app or console store on the day you play.
Cloud support is useful when you want to test a game without a large installation, but it does not make every title available on every Game Pass tier. Check the plan, region and supported device. PC players should also verify whether the PC version is delivered through the Xbox app, Steam or another launcher: the announcements list those storefronts separately.
If you prefer ownership, compare the current Xbox, Windows, Steam, Battle.net or PlayStation listing for the platform you actually use. Do not assume that a console purchase automatically grants a PC copy, or that cross-progression applies to an unlisted storefront. Gears of War: Reloaded is the example in this group with explicitly announced cross-play and cross-progression.
A practical post-release checklist
- Decide whether you want solo, co-op, competitive multiplayer or an evolving Game Preview.
- Choose a genre that contrasts with the game you just completed if you are burned out.
- Confirm the exact platform: Series X|S, PC, cloud, Steam, Battle.net or PlayStation 5.
- Check whether Game Pass inclusion is day-one, current or tied to a particular plan.
- For Grounded 2, remember that Game Preview can mean ongoing changes to features and saves.
- For Gears of War: Reloaded, use the 4K-texture, 60-FPS campaign and 120-FPS multiplayer claims as title-specific specifications, not a benchmark for every Xbox game.
- Recheck release dates for announced titles, especially Gears of War: E-Day, whose available announcement gives October 6 without a year.
Bottom line
For most players, Avowed is the best all-purpose fantasy follow-up, South of Midnight is the cleanest story reset, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 offers the biggest mechanical change. Choose Grounded 2 when friends are ready, Ninja Gaiden 4 when you want a demanding skill test, Keeper when originality matters most, and Gears of War: Reloaded when you want dependable cover-shooter action and multiplayer. None should be called a strict Series X-only exclusive without checking the current platform list.
