The Microsoft XBOX Nano Controller is configured in the Xbox Accessories app, not with a hidden combination of buttons on the hardware. On Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, open the app and create a controller profile; on Windows 10 or 11, connect the Nano with a compatible USB-C cable when the app asks for a wired connection. The small controller also has a programmable Action Button for shortcuts such as screenshots and gameplay capture.
There is no confirmed vibration switch or vibration-strength slider in the Microsoft pages currently available, and Microsoft has not published a universal battery-runtime figure. The Nano has an internal rechargeable battery, but the USB-C charging cable is sold separately. The settings below therefore separate confirmed controls from practical recommendations that do not pretend to be official battery tests.

What the Xbox Nano Controller settings actually control
The XBOX Nano Controller announced by Microsoft on October 14, 2026, is a wireless controller designed for Xbox consoles and smaller hands or travel setups. Xbox Wire describes it as a little over 5 inches long and 3.5 ounces, making it shorter and lighter than most current smartphones. The launch announcement lists a $49.99 price, while the Microsoft Store listing gives November 4, 2026 as the release date.

Its configuration has three separate questions:
- Button mapping: handled with the Xbox Accessories app on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows 10/11.
- Action Button shortcuts: assigned as part of a controller profile; Microsoft gives screenshots and gameplay capture as examples.
- Vibration and battery: the official pages currently establish the battery hardware and usage variables, but do not document a vibration toggle, vibration-strength control, runtime hours or charge time.
That distinction matters. A setting that appears on another Xbox controller should not automatically be assumed to exist on the Nano, and a battery estimate from a different model is not a Nano specification.

Set up the controller before creating a profile
Use the right connection for the device
On an Xbox console, pair the Nano using Xbox Wireless, then launch the Xbox Accessories app. Microsoft lists Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One compatibility. For a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, the app may require the controller to be connected by a compatible USB-C cable while you configure it. The Nano uses Bluetooth for compatible PCs, tablets, phones and Smart TVs for supported wireless play, but Bluetooth availability does not remove the cable requirement when the Windows app requests a wired configuration connection.
Install the app and identify the controller
- Turn on the Nano and connect or pair it with the target device.
- Open Xbox Accessories from the console’s apps or the Windows app list.
- Select the XBOX Nano Controller when it appears. If several controllers are connected, disconnect the others temporarily so you edit the intended device.
- Choose the configuration option and create a new profile instead of overwriting the default immediately. Use a name that describes the game or purpose, such as “capture,” “left-handed” or “travel.”
- Save the profile, test every changed control in a safe menu, and keep a second profile with the standard layout for games that assume the normal Xbox arrangement.
App labels can change between console and Windows releases. Look for the controller’s configuration or button-mapping screen rather than relying on an exact menu name.
How to remap Xbox Nano buttons
On Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One
- Open Xbox Accessories from the console dashboard.
- Select the Nano and open its configuration screen.
- Create a profile or select an existing profile to edit.
- Select the button you want to change, then choose the button or supported action that should be sent when you press it.
- Assign the programmable Action Button separately if you want it to perform a shortcut rather than a normal game input.
- Save the profile and test it in the dashboard before launching a competitive or online game.
Use one profile per control scheme. A profile that moves a frequently used face-button command to a more reachable control can be useful for small hands, one-handed play or games with repeated menu actions. Keep the conventional layout available because some tutorials, accessibility instructions and multiplayer habits assume the standard positions.

On Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Connect the Nano with a compatible USB-C cable if Xbox Accessories reports that a wired connection is required.
- Open the Xbox Accessories app and select the controller.
- Enter the configuration screen and create or edit a profile.
- Change the required buttons and the Action Button, then save the profile to the controller through the app.
- Disconnect the cable only after the save operation completes, then test the profile in the game or Windows controller test screen you normally use.
If the app cannot see the controller, the first checks are the cable, the USB port and whether another program has taken control of the device. A cable that supplies power but does not carry data can charge a controller while still failing the mapping step; use a known-good USB-C data cable.

Choose useful mappings instead of changing everything
Action Button for capture and system shortcuts
The Nano’s programmable Action Button is the clearest reason to create a custom profile. Xbox Wire specifically identifies screenshots and gameplay capture as supported shortcut examples. Assign the function you use most often, then leave the ordinary face and shoulder buttons in their familiar positions unless a game or accessibility need justifies a broader change.
- Capture profile: put screenshot or gameplay capture on the Action Button so you do not have to move a thumb from the sticks.
- Menu-heavy games: assign the Action Button to the shortcut that opens the map, inventory or another frequently repeated screen, where the app offers that action.
- Accessibility profile: move a difficult-to-reach command to a control that requires less finger movement, and test accidental presses before using the profile online.
- Travel profile: keep the standard layout and use the Action Button only for capture, avoiding changes that could be forgotten when you switch games.
Do not assume that every game-specific command is available as a global app action. The Xbox Accessories profile can remap supported inputs and shortcuts; a title’s own control menu may still be needed for functions that the app does not expose.
Keep a recovery profile
Name one profile “Default” and do not modify it. If a remap makes a menu inaccessible, switch back to that profile in Xbox Accessories rather than guessing which button was changed. Before a tournament, cloud session or shared-console visit, load the profile you intend to use and verify the Action Button once.
Vibration: what is confirmed and what is not
The Microsoft pages used for the Nano do not document a vibration on/off setting or a vibration-strength slider. Consequently, there is no confirmed Nano-specific instruction such as “open this menu and set vibration to 50 percent.” Do not treat a control shown for another Xbox controller as proof that the Nano has the same option.

Games may expose their own rumble setting in their individual options menus, but that is a game-level control and should not be described as a Nano hardware setting. If a particular title includes vibration controls, use that title’s settings and note that the behavior can differ between games.
There is also no published evidence that disabling vibration on the Nano extends its battery runtime. Until Microsoft documents a Nano vibration control and publishes test conditions, the safest advice is to avoid promising a battery gain from a setting that has not been established.
Battery hardware and realistic expectations
What Microsoft publishes
The Nano contains an internal rechargeable battery. Microsoft says the USB-C charging cable is required but sold separately. The Microsoft Store listing does not provide a universal number of play hours, and it warns that battery life varies significantly with the use of headsets, additional accessories and the way the controller is used. Those variables make a single runtime claim misleading.
No official Nano charge-time figure is published either. Treat any number quoted by a retailer, forum post or unrelated controller review as unverified unless Microsoft later adds a Nano-specific test result.

How to manage the battery without inventing a runtime
- Keep a known-good USB-C charging cable with the controller, because the cable is not included as part of the controller’s required charging hardware.
- Charge before a long session rather than waiting for a low-battery warning during play.
- When practical, remove or disconnect accessories that you are not using. Microsoft names headsets and additional accessories as factors that affect battery life.
- Use the wired connection when you are already at a desk and do not need wireless movement; this avoids consuming wireless battery during that session, although the exact charging or play behavior depends on the device and cable.
- Do not use vibration as a guaranteed battery-saving lever. The reviewed official pages do not establish a Nano vibration control or a measured runtime difference.
These are operating habits, not a Microsoft-certified hours-per-charge estimate. Your result will depend on accessory load, wireless conditions, game activity and how often the controller is used.
USB-C cable requirements
The cable serves two practical purposes: charging the internal battery and, on Windows, providing the wired connection that Xbox Accessories may require for mapping. Microsoft does not specify a particular cable model in the product information cited here, so choose a reliable USB-C cable that supports data as well as power.
- If the controller charges but the Windows app cannot configure it, replace the cable with one known to transfer data.
- Try another USB port directly on the console or PC rather than a passive hub.
- Inspect the USB-C connector for looseness or debris and stop using a cable that disconnects when the controller moves.
- Keep a second cable available for travel; the Nano’s internal battery cannot be treated as replaceable batteries that you can swap at a moment’s notice.
Because the cable is sold separately, include that extra purchase in the setup plan even though the controller’s announced price is $49.99.

“Compatible” is important for mobile and Smart TV use: Microsoft identifies Bluetooth support, but that does not guarantee that every operating-system version, game or television exposes every controller feature.

Troubleshooting common mapping and battery problems
The Nano appears wirelessly but not in Xbox Accessories
- On Windows, connect a USB-C data cable and reopen the app.
- Close other controller utilities that may be holding the device.
- Disconnect and reconnect the controller, then select it again in Xbox Accessories.
- Try a different USB port and a different known-good data cable if the device still does not appear.
A remap saved but the game still uses the old button
- Confirm that the intended profile is active, not merely saved.
- Test the mapping in the console or Windows interface before launching the game.
- Check the game’s own control settings; a game-level override can take precedence over the controller profile.
- Return to the Default profile to determine whether the issue is the custom assignment or the controller connection.
The Action Button does nothing
- Open the profile and verify that an action was assigned to the Action Button.
- Save the profile again while the controller is connected.
- Test a documented shortcut such as screenshot or gameplay capture before trying a game-specific command.
- If the shortcut works in the dashboard but not in one game, check that game’s capture or privacy settings.
Battery drains faster than expected
- Check whether a headset or another accessory is connected; Microsoft identifies those as battery-life variables.
- Compare sessions with and without optional accessories rather than relying on an internet runtime estimate.
- Use the USB-C cable during desk play and carry it for longer trips.
- If charging is intermittent, test another cable and port before concluding that the internal battery has failed.
Xbox Nano versus PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller
The names are similar, but these are different products. The Microsoft XBOX Nano is wireless and has an internal rechargeable battery. The PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller is a wired, USB-powered model with rear Advanced Gaming Buttons and a Program button. Its manual describes AGL and AGR assignments, and those assignments remain in memory after the controller is disconnected until they are cleared with the Program button.

Choose the Microsoft model when wireless console use, Bluetooth compatibility or a rechargeable design is the priority. Choose a wired Nano model only when a cable-bound setup and rear-button programming fit your use; do not follow one product’s instructions for the other.
A practical profile plan for different players
Everyday Xbox profile
Leave the standard face, shoulder and stick-click positions unchanged. Assign the Action Button to the shortcut you use most, such as screenshot or gameplay capture. This gives you a useful shortcut without creating a layout that must be relearned in every game.

Move one high-frequency command at a time to a more comfortable button. Test the new position in menus, during movement and while holding another control. Keep the Default profile untouched so you can recover immediately if a remap causes an accidental press or makes a menu difficult to navigate.
Travel and mobile profile
Use the same familiar layout as the console profile and pair over Bluetooth with a compatible phone, tablet or Smart TV. Carry the USB-C cable because the internal battery is rechargeable and the cable is sold separately; do not assume a television or mobile device can configure the controller through Bluetooth alone.
What is still unknown
As of the Microsoft information available for the October 14, 2026 announcement and the 2026 Store listing, the following values are not established for the XBOX Nano: battery hours per charge, full-charge time, a vibration toggle, vibration-strength levels and a measured battery benefit from changing vibration. Keeping those items explicitly unknown is more useful than filling them with figures from another controller.
