For most owners, the best accessory set is a 100W-class USB-C dock for a desk, a charger that can match the Ally X’s 65W baseline, a model-specific protective case, and a high-endurance UHS-II-compatible microSD card. The ROG Xbox Ally X (2025) includes a 65W charger, supports USB-C Power Delivery, and has a UHS-II microSD reader. Those specifications determine which accessories are useful rather than merely convenient.

Choose the ROG 100W Gaming Charger Dock when charging, display output and data transfer are your priorities. Choose the ROG Bulwark Dock DG300 when you need HDMI 2.1, several USB-A ports, Ethernet and a headphone connection. For travel protection, the dbrand Killswitch is the clearest model-specific option documented for the Xbox handheld family. Removable storage starts with a compatible SD, SDXC or SDHC card; an internal SSD upgrade is a separate replacement project.

Desk charging, monitor output and peripherals ROG 100W Gaming Charger Dock Xbox Wire’s 2025 accessory guide identifies it for charging, data transfer and display output. The guide does not state a complete port list or a guaranteed refresh-rate ceiling, so check the current regional specification before buying.
Many ports and a wired network ROG Bulwark Dock (2025) DG300 HDMI 2.1, three USB-A ports, Ethernet and an audio jack; support is listed up to 4K at 144Hz or 8K at 30Hz. Its larger port set is more useful on a desk than in a small travel bag.
Travel protection dbrand Killswitch Designed for Xbox-certified case with impact-resistant thermoplastics, a 2.5 mm profile, kickstand and crush-proof Travel Cover. Confirm that the listing is for the exact ROG Xbox Ally or Ally X model and check whether your dock and charger fit with the case installed.
Removable game storage A quality microSD card confirmed for the Ally’s reader The 2025 Ally X reader supports UHS-II microSD and SD, SDXC and SDHC media. No single capacity, speed rating or card model is specified by the available product information; verify the card’s sustained performance and warranty.
Internal capacity expansion WD_BLACK SN7100X NVMe SSD Xbox Wire names it as an internal expansion option for the ROG Xbox Ally family. Installing an internal drive is an upgrade or replacement project, not a plug-in accessory. Verify the exact device and installation requirements first.

The rest of this guide explains how to choose between those categories, how to set them up, and what to check when an accessory does not behave as expected.

Why power delivery matters on the Xbox handhelds

The included 65W charger is your baseline

Microsoft’s 2025 product specification lists a 65W charger in the ROG Xbox Ally X package. That gives you a useful reference when comparing replacement chargers, travel adapters and docks: a USB-C charger described only as “fast” is not enough information. Look for the charger’s actual USB-C Power Delivery output and the profiles it supports.

JSAUX Carrying Case for ROG Xbox Ally/Ally X, Dual-Layer Storage, BG0136
  • [Compatibility] Only compatible with ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X (2025)
  • [Tailored Protection for ROG Xbox Ally (X)] This double-decker carrying case is custom-built for ROG Xbox Ally/Ally X, giving your console a perfect fit. It shields your handheld from daily bumps, scratches, and dust
  • [Dual Layer Storage] Top layer securely holds your console while the bottom layer provides flexible space for the original charger, original stand, HDMI cable, USB C cable, and earphones
  • [Felt Exterior & Soft Inner] The outer shell combines durable felt, a reinforced laminated layer, and stitched fabric detailing for protection against scratches and daily wear. Inside, the soft lining fits the console snugly, with a hook-and-loop strap that keeps it stable
  • [Thoughtful Details] Raised zones protect the joysticks, while a shoulder strap and smooth zipper make it easy to carry and use. Inside, dedicated slots hold your SD and microSD cards, keeping everything organized wherever you go

The Ally X uses USB-C Power Delivery, so the handheld and charger negotiate an operating level rather than simply drawing an arbitrary amount of electricity. A charger can be physically connected and still provide less power than the handheld needs for its highest performance mode. Cable quality, the dock’s own power budget and other devices connected to the dock can also affect what reaches the handheld.

What the 35W observation means in practice

A 2026 PC Gamer review reported that an underpowered charger prevented the device from reaching its full 35W mode in testing. That is a performance finding under the reviewer’s test conditions, not a promise that every charger below a particular label will behave identically. It does establish the practical risk: insufficient power can limit the mode you expect while gaming.

For a replacement wall charger, use the included 65W unit as the minimum reference and confirm the manufacturer’s stated USB-C PD capability. For a dock that must charge while also driving a display and running USB devices, a 100W-class design gives more headroom; the dock still has to allocate some of that input to its ports and video hardware, so the number printed on the dock is not necessarily the wattage delivered to the handheld.

When a 100W-class dock is worth it

  • Desk gaming: You can leave one cable connected to the Ally while the dock handles power, display and peripherals.
  • High-power play: More input capacity reduces the chance that the dock becomes the limiting component when the handheld is working hard.
  • Peripheral-heavy setups: A display, USB storage, keyboard, mouse and network adapter all compete for the dock’s available power and bandwidth.
  • Future flexibility: A higher-capacity dock can remain useful if you later add a faster display or more USB devices.

A 100W label does not automatically guarantee a particular frame rate or the Ally X’s maximum operating mode. Confirm the dock’s PD output specification, use its supplied or recommended power adapter, and test the complete setup under the game workload you actually play.

JSAUX Carrying Case for Steam Deck/ROG Ally, Hard Shell Travel Case

Choosing between the two documented docks

ROG 100W Gaming Charger Dock: the direct, simple choice

Xbox Wire’s 2025 accessory guide specifically describes the ROG 100W Gaming Charger Dock as supporting charging, data transfer and display output. That makes it the most direct recommendation when your main goal is to turn the handheld into a desktop or television console without assembling several separate adapters.

It is the better fit when you want a compact routine: place the Ally in position, connect one USB-C cable, and keep your monitor or television and everyday peripherals attached to the dock. Before purchase, check which video connector is exposed, whether the dock includes its power supply in your region, the length and angle of the host cable, and the maximum display mode listed for the current revision. Those details are not all stated in the accessory guide and can vary by market or bundle.

ROG Bulwark Dock DG300: the port-rich desktop option

The 2025 ROG Bulwark Dock DG300 is documented as a 7-in-1 dock with HDMI 2.1, three USB-A ports, Ethernet and an audio jack. Xbox Wire lists output support up to 4K at 144Hz or 8K at 30Hz. That combination is useful if the handheld will replace a small desktop: HDMI 2.1 covers a modern high-refresh display, Ethernet avoids relying on wireless networking, and the audio jack leaves a USB port available for another device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The “up to” figures describe the dock’s stated capability, not a guarantee that every Ally game will render at 4K and 144Hz. The handheld’s performance, the display’s own limits, the HDMI cable, game settings and the dock’s active power and bandwidth all remain part of the chain. At 8K, the listed 30Hz ceiling is a display-output specification, not a recommendation for high-frame-rate gaming.

Dock comparison checklist

Use these questions before ordering either dock:

  1. Power: What USB-C PD input and pass-through output are explicitly listed? Do not infer them from the phrase “USB-C dock.”
  2. Video: Is the connector HDMI 2.1 or another standard, and what resolution and refresh combinations are stated?
  3. USB: How many ports do you need, and are they USB-A, USB-C, or a mixture? Check whether a port is reserved for charging rather than data.
  4. Network: If you need wired networking, confirm that Ethernet is built in instead of requiring a separate adapter.
  5. Audio: A 3.5 mm jack can be more convenient than routing a headset through a USB adapter, especially when other ports are occupied.
  6. Physical fit: Verify that the Ally sits securely with your case installed and that the host cable reaches the port without a sharp bend.
  7. Portability: A compact charger dock suits travel; the broader Bulwark layout is aimed at a more permanent desk arrangement.

How to set up a dock without losing power or display output

  1. Update the handheld first. Install pending Windows, firmware and device updates while the Ally is on its normal charger. This separates update problems from dock problems.
  2. Connect power to the dock’s input. Use the dock’s specified adapter or a USB-C PD charger whose output matches the dock’s requirements. A low-power phone charger can make the entire setup appear unreliable.
  3. Connect the display directly to the dock. Use an HDMI cable rated for the resolution and refresh rate you intend to run. If the display remains blank, select the correct input on the monitor or television before changing Windows settings.
  4. Attach the handheld with the dock’s host cable. Keep the cable clear of the exhaust area and avoid hanging the handheld from the connector.
  5. Add peripherals one at a time. Start with the display, then Ethernet, USB devices and audio. Testing in stages identifies which device or cable introduces a fault.
  6. Check Windows display settings. Open Settings, choose System, then Display, select the external screen and set the desired resolution and refresh rate that both the dock and display support.
  7. Check the power indication while gaming. Launch a demanding game and confirm that the Ally is charging rather than slowly discharging. If its high-power mode is unavailable, test with the included 65W charger or a properly specified higher-capacity source before blaming the game.

Protective cases: fit is more important than thickness

What the Killswitch provides

Xbox Wire identifies the dbrand Killswitch as Designed for Xbox-certified. Its documented features are impact-resistant thermoplastics, a slim 2.5 mm profile, an integrated kickstand and a crush-proof Travel Cover. Together, those features address the most common handheld risks: drops, pressure inside a bag, and the need to prop the screen up without carrying a separate stand.

The 2.5 mm figure is the case profile cited by Xbox Wire; it is not a promise that every grip surface or accessory adds only that much thickness. A case can be slim around the shell while still changing how the handheld sits in a dock or how easily a USB-C plug reaches the port.

Check model and port compatibility before ordering

  • Exact model: Confirm whether the case is for the ROG Xbox Ally, the ROG Xbox Ally X, or both. “ROG Ally” in a product title is not sufficient by itself.
  • Both USB-C ports: Test access to the top and lower-side ports with a normal plug and with the angled connector used by your dock.
  • Controls and vents: The shell must not press the triggers, obstruct buttons, or cover cooling openings.
  • Kickstand geometry: Check that the stand remains stable on the surface where you play and does not block a dock connector.
  • Travel Cover clearance: If you use the crush-proof cover, verify that thumbsticks, rear buttons and any attached grips are protected without being forced.
  • Desk integration: Measure the case’s outside width and bottom edge against your dock cradle. A case that is excellent for travel may need to be removed before docking.

When a case and dock conflict

If the Ally will not seat fully, do not force the USB-C plug. First remove the handheld and inspect whether the case lip or kickstand is contacting the dock. Some docks accept a bare handheld but not a thick shell; others work with a case only when the host cable is connected externally. A short USB-C extension can sometimes solve reach problems, but it adds another connector and another possible point of failure, so use one only if its PD and data specifications are adequate.

microSD cards: the simplest removable expansion

What the reader supports

ASUS specifies a UHS-II microSD reader on the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X, with support for SD, SDXC and SDHC media. That tells you the card families and reader class to look for. It does not establish one universal capacity recommendation or certify every retail card.

How to choose a card responsibly

  1. Choose capacity from your library size. Count the games you expect to keep installed, add space for updates and leave free capacity for Windows and temporary files. Buying the largest number printed on a listing is not automatically the best value if most of your library remains on internal storage.
  2. Prioritize sustained performance. Compare the manufacturer’s sustained read and write information, not only a peak sequential number. Handheld game installs and updates can expose weak sustained performance.
  3. Prefer a documented warranty. Keep the receipt and record the card’s serial or batch information. Counterfeit or relabeled cards are a bigger risk when a marketplace listing does not identify the actual manufacturer and warranty region.
  4. Match the reader and card family. SDXC and SDHC refer to card formats; UHS-II refers to the bus interface. Confirm that the card is physically microSD and that the listing clearly states compatibility with a UHS-II reader.
  5. Format it in the handheld. After backing up any existing data, let Windows format the card for the use you need. Formatting erases the card, so do not skip the backup step.

Install and test a microSD card

  1. Shut down the Ally completely rather than relying on sleep.
  2. Insert the card in the microSD slot in the orientation shown by the slot markings; never push against resistance.
  3. Start Windows and open File Explorer to confirm that the card appears with a drive letter.
  4. Copy a non-critical test file, eject the card safely, reinsert it and verify the file before moving a game library.
  5. Format the card only after confirming that no needed data remains on it.
  6. Install one medium-sized game or copy a known backup, then monitor for disconnects, corrupted files or unusually variable transfer speeds.

Use the card for games and media you can reinstall or restore. Keep irreplaceable saves and personal files backed up elsewhere; removable storage can fail, be misplaced or become corrupted even when it is from a reputable manufacturer.

Internal SSD expansion is a different project

Xbox Wire names the WD_BLACK SN7100X NVMe SSD as an internal expansion option for the ROG Xbox Ally family. Unlike a microSD card, an internal SSD requires opening the handheld, moving or restoring data, and confirming that the drive physically and electrically matches the exact model.

Questions to answer before buying an SSD

  • Is the drive form factor and interface supported by your specific ROG Xbox Ally or Ally X revision?
  • Do you have a current backup or recovery plan if the original drive must be removed?
  • Will opening the chassis affect your warranty or service options in your region?
  • Do you have the correct precision tools and a clean, static-aware workspace?
  • Can you reinstall Windows and restore Xbox app or game-library data if cloning fails?

Treat the SN7100X reference as a compatibility lead, not as permission to install any similarly named NVMe drive without checking the current device documentation. If you do not already have a reliable backup and recovery method, a microSD card is the lower-risk first expansion.

Troubleshooting common accessory failures

The handheld charges slowly or leaves high-power mode unavailable

  • Reconnect the included 65W charger directly to establish a known-good baseline.
  • Check that the dock’s power adapter is plugged into the dock’s PD input rather than a data-only port.
  • Disconnect USB drives, bus-powered hubs and other peripherals, then test again.
  • Replace the USB-C cable with one whose PD capability is explicitly stated.
  • Compare the result while the game is running; a device can appear to charge at the desktop but discharge under load.

The 2026 PC Gamer observation about an underpowered charger blocking the full 35W mode makes this a power-budget issue to investigate before changing performance settings.

The external monitor is blank or stuck at a low refresh rate

  • Confirm the monitor input and reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends.
  • Test the handheld, dock and display with no USB peripherals attached.
  • In Windows Settings > System > Display, select the external screen and choose a mode supported by the dock and monitor.
  • Use an HDMI cable appropriate for the advertised resolution and refresh combination.
  • If the display works at a lower mode but not the target mode, treat the “up to” dock specification as a ceiling that still depends on the whole cable-and-display chain.

Ethernet, USB or audio stops working

  • Power-cycle the dock and handheld, then reconnect the host cable.
  • Test each accessory alone to identify a faulty device or overloaded power budget.
  • Move a USB device to another port and check whether it appears in Windows Device Manager.
  • For Ethernet, verify the link lights on the router or switch and test with a different network cable.
  • For audio, choose the dock’s output device in Windows sound settings instead of assuming the handheld changed automatically.

The microSD card disconnects or reports corruption

  • Stop using it and copy recoverable files to another drive.
  • Safely eject the card, inspect the contacts and reinsert it with the handheld powered down.
  • Test the card with a trusted reader and a known-good file copy.
  • Reformat only after backing up data; repeated errors indicate that replacement is safer than continued use.
  • Keep game saves synchronized or backed up independently of the removable card.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Identify whether you own the ROG Xbox Ally or Ally X; case fit and some accessory listings are model-specific.
  2. Decide whether your main use is desk docking, television play, travel, storage expansion or protection.
  3. For docking, write down the exact display resolution and refresh rate, number of USB devices, need for Ethernet and need for analog audio.
  4. For charging, compare stated USB-C PD output with the included 65W baseline and account for power consumed by dock ports.
  5. For a case, confirm access to both USB-C ports, vents, controls, kickstand and Travel Cover clearance.
  6. For microSD, choose a reputable card with documented sustained performance, warranty and the SD, SDXC or SDHC format your reader supports.
  7. For an SSD, verify the exact model, backup plan, installation procedure and service implications before opening the handheld.
  8. Test the complete setup during a demanding game, not only at the Windows desktop.

Bottom line

The ROG 100W Gaming Charger Dock is the most straightforward all-round dock because Xbox Wire explicitly covers charging, data transfer and display output. The ROG Bulwark Dock DG300 is the stronger desktop choice when HDMI 2.1, three USB-A ports, Ethernet and a 3.5 mm audio jack matter; its stated ceiling is 4K at 144Hz or 8K at 30Hz. Use a case designed for the exact Ally model, with the documented dbrand Killswitch standing out for its 2.5 mm impact-resistant shell, kickstand and crush-proof Travel Cover. Start storage expansion with a properly verified microSD card, and approach the named WD_BLACK SN7100X internal option as a hardware upgrade that demands model-specific checking and a recovery plan.
