The right configuration depends on whether you need rapid trigger activation in a shooter, smooth analogue control in a racer, or lower physical reach and effort. Use the Xbox Accessories app to save separate profiles, then combine the app settings with the controller’s physical adjustments.
As a practical starting point, use short trigger locks, a medium or high right-stick tension, a rear paddle for jump or crouch, and the smallest drift-free deadzone for FPS. Leave the triggers at full travel for racing, choose a tension that keeps steering smooth, and map paddles to manual shifting. For accessibility, map the controls the player can reach consistently, use stick-swap or sensitivity-curve options where they reduce effort, and save the result as its own profile. These are starting points to tune—not universal tested values.

Quick starting profiles
The table below gives a usable first configuration for each type of play. Apply it, test it in the actual game, and change one control at a time so you can tell which adjustment helped.
| Use case | Trigger position | Stick tension and topper | Useful paddle assignments | Deadzone and curve approach |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First-person shooters | Short trigger-lock position for rapid firing | Medium or high right-stick tension for steadier aim; try a tall right-stick topper only if it improves fine control | Jump, crouch/slide, reload, interact or another action that would otherwise remove your thumb from the aim stick | Use the smallest deadzone that does not drift; tune the game’s own deadzone separately |
| Racing | Full travel for progressive throttle and brake control | Choose the tension that makes steering smooth rather than twitchy; standard toppers are a sensible first test | Manual upshift and downshift, look back, camera or another frequently used control | Favor a predictable curve and enough deadzone to prevent wandering on a straight |
| Accessibility | Choose full travel or locks according to the player’s force and range of motion | Use the tension and topper that require the least fatigue while remaining accurate | Put hard-to-reach or simultaneous actions on the paddles and keep the most reliable fingers on the primary controls | Use stick-swap, curves and deadzones to reduce reach, speed or precision demands; confirm the game supports the required input |
Microsoft documents the available controls, but it does not publish one numeric sensitivity or deadzone profile that is best for every title. A setting that feels precise in one game can feel slow, twitchy or unusable in another.

What the Elite Series 2 can change
The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 combines software remapping with hardware you can change without replacing the controller. In Xbox Accessories, you can customize buttons, deadzones, stick-sensitivity curves and stored profiles. Physically, the controller provides three thumbstick-tension settings, shorter hair-trigger-lock positions, interchangeable thumbstick toppers, interchangeable D-pads and four rear paddles.
Software controls
- Assign A, B, X, Y, the D-pad, bumpers, triggers, stick clicks and the four paddles to other supported controller inputs.
- Adjust each stick’s deadzone and sensitivity curve. The deadzone determines how far a stick must move before the game receives movement; the curve controls how quickly output rises as you move it.
- Store up to three custom profiles plus the default profile in the controller. The Profile button switches among the saved slots while you play.
Physical controls
- The three tension settings change the resistance of the thumbsticks. Higher tension can make small aiming corrections steadier; lower tension can feel faster and require less force.
- Trigger locks shorten the distance before a trigger activates. That is useful for repeated fire, but it removes some of the analogue travel needed for gradual acceleration or braking.
- Different topper heights and shapes alter leverage and reach. A taller topper can give the aiming thumb more movement for a small camera adjustment, while a standard or short topper may feel quicker.
- The faceted D-pad and interchangeable components let you choose the surface that is easiest to operate for a particular game or hand.
Microsoft lists the controller at 345 g, plus or minus 15 g, with four paddles, a faceted D-pad and standard thumbsticks. Its rechargeable battery is rated for up to 40 hours; actual runtime varies with use and connection conditions.

- Connect the controller. Pair or plug in the Elite Series 2, then open Xbox Accessories. Confirm that the app identifies the controller before changing settings.
- Open the profile editor. Choose the controller, select the option to configure it, and create a new profile or edit an existing one.
- Assign a slot. Save the configuration to Slot 1, Slot 2 or Slot 3. The controller also keeps its default profile, so you can return to an unmodified layout.
- Map buttons and paddles. Select an input in the diagram, choose the action it should perform, and check that no two controls now conflict with an essential command in the game.
- Set sticks. Adjust left and right deadzones and choose the curve that matches the way you want output to build. Make physical tension and topper changes with the controller’s included adjustment tool and interchangeable parts.
- Test before launching the game. Press every remapped input, move each stick slowly through its full range, and check for drift or a missing edge of movement. If you use keyboard mapping, use the app’s documented test tool as well.
- Test in the target game. Game-level sensitivity, deadzone and button settings can override or interact with the controller profile. Verify movement, aiming, triggers, menu navigation and any paddle action in a safe practice area.
- Switch while playing. Press the Profile button to move among the saved profiles. Memorize which indicator corresponds to each game so you do not have to open a menu during a match or race.
Best starting setup for FPS games
Shooters reward fast access to actions and predictable small movements. Start with the following arrangement, then tune it for the specific title.
Use short trigger locks for rapid fire
Move both trigger stops to the shorter position when the game treats a trigger press as an immediate shot. The reduced travel can make repeated firing feel quicker and can reduce the distance your fingers must move. Do not use this as a default for vehicles, analogue flight controls or any game in which partial trigger position changes the output.
Choose right-stick tension for aim stability
Begin with medium tension. If your reticle moves too easily during small corrections, try the high-tension setting. If tracking a moving target feels slow or tiring, try lower tension. Change only the tension first; changing the topper and curve at the same time makes it difficult to identify the cause of a better or worse result.
Use paddles to keep the aim thumb on the stick
Place jump, crouch or slide, reload and interact on the rear paddles that your middle or ring fingers can reach without changing your grip. A common four-paddle layout is jump, crouch/slide, reload and interact, but a two-paddle layout may be more comfortable. The best assignment is the action you use often and currently perform by removing your right thumb from the aim stick.
Test topper height instead of assuming taller is better
A tall right-stick topper increases the distance available for a small camera correction, which can help a player who over-aims. It can also make rapid turns feel slower or place the thumb in an uncomfortable position. Compare the tall and standard toppers in the same practice scenario and keep the one that gives repeatable tracking without strain.
Tune deadzone in two places
Lower the controller deadzone until the stick responds promptly, then stop as soon as the on-screen character or reticle moves by itself. After that, check the game’s own deadzone setting. Both layers can add a deadzone, so a low controller value does not guarantee a low in-game value.
If a game uses percentage sliders, a low single-digit value can be an illustrative personal starting point, not an official recommendation. Increase it until drift disappears, and retest after the controller warms up or after several minutes of play. If the stick still drifts at a high setting, the issue is not solved by a more aggressive curve; inspect the hardware and the game’s calibration options.
Pick a curve deliberately
A faster curve can make the first part of a stick movement more responsive, while a slower curve can provide finer control near the center. Use the faster option only if you can still make small corrections. For precision rifles or long-range play, a gentler response may be easier to control; for close-range movement, a quicker response may feel more immediate. Record the original setting before experimenting.
Best starting setup for racing games
Racing uses the trigger as an analogue control: small changes can separate a smooth corner exit from wheelspin or a locked brake. That makes a racing profile fundamentally different from an FPS profile.

Keep the triggers at full travel
Leave the trigger stops open when you need progressive throttle and brake input. Full travel gives your finger more physical range to modulate acceleration, braking and traction-sensitive driving. If a particular arcade title treats the triggers as simple on/off buttons, a short lock may be comfortable, but it should not be your general racing setting.
Set steering tension for smoothness
Use the tension setting that lets you hold a small steering angle without repeatedly correcting. High tension can calm an overactive thumb, but it may require more force over a long event. Low tension can make quick direction changes easy, yet it can feel twitchy on a straight. Test a gentle turn, a chicane and a long straight before deciding.
Map paddles to manual shifting
For a manual transmission, assign one paddle to upshift and one to downshift. Microsoft specifically presents Forza Horizon 5 as a racing example and describes paddle customization for manual shifting. Put the remaining paddles on controls you use without wanting to leave the steering stick, such as look back or a camera function.

Start with a neutral or moderate curve and enough deadzone to keep the car straight when you release the stick. If the vehicle wanders, increase the deadzone in small steps and check whether the game has its own steering deadzone. If steering feels delayed, reduce the controller deadzone or choose a more responsive curve, but change one layer at a time.
Best starting setup for accessibility
Accessibility is not one preset. The correct profile is the one a player can operate consistently, without pain, excessive force or an unreliable reach.
Begin with reliable inputs, not a standard layout
Ask which fingers can move, which positions can be held, and which actions cause fatigue. Assign the most important commands to the buttons and paddles that can be reached repeatedly. A paddle is useful only if the player can press it without shifting the controller or losing another necessary control.

Reduce simultaneous reach
Move a frequently combined action—such as jump plus aim, sprint plus movement or a menu command—onto a paddle when that removes a difficult thumb movement. Keep the layout consistent across games where possible, but save a separate profile when a title uses a very different control scheme.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use stick swap and curves when they lower effort
If one hand has better precision or range, a stick-swap option can put movement or camera control on the more capable side. A slower curve can provide more output from a small movement; a faster curve can reduce the distance needed for a turn. Deadzone should be large enough to prevent accidental motion but no larger, because an excessive deadzone forces more travel from a limited range of motion.
Choose trigger travel around strength and precision
Short locks can reduce the finger movement required for a digital action. Full travel may be easier when gradual control matters or when a player benefits from a longer, more forgiving motion. Test both with the actual game rather than choosing from the label alone.
Save and label the profile
Use one of the three custom slots for the accessibility layout and keep the default profile unchanged. Give the profile a clear name that describes its purpose, then test every action in menus and gameplay. A setup that works in one game may fail if that game does not expose the expected input.
Controller-to-keyboard mapping
Xbox has added controller-to-keyboard input mapping in Xbox Accessories for the Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and the Xbox Adaptive Controller on PC and console. This lets an Elite button or paddle send a keyboard key in supported games, which can be useful when a title reserves an important command for a key that is difficult to reach.
Important compatibility limits
- The game must support keyboard input. Mapping a paddle to a key does not make a controller-only game understand that key.
- Bluetooth keyboard mapping on PC is not supported according to the documented feature limits. Use a supported connection method and verify the current Xbox Accessories behavior on your system.
- Keyboard mapping can produce a different input type from the rest of the controller. Test menus, gameplay and any anti-cheat or input-mode behavior before relying on it.
Configure and test it
- Open Xbox Accessories with the controller connected on Xbox or Windows 10/11.
- Edit the profile and select the Elite button or paddle you want to change.
- Choose the keyboard key mapping, save it to a profile slot, and use the app’s keyboard-mapping test tool to confirm that the expected key is generated.
- Launch the target game and verify that the command works in the context where you need it. If it does not, check the game’s keyboard bindings and whether it allows mixed controller and keyboard input.
How to compare two configurations
When two setups both seem plausible, compare the underlying trade-offs instead of relying on a short first impression.

Troubleshooting common problems
The stick moves without being touched
Raise the affected stick’s deadzone slightly in Xbox Accessories and check the game’s deadzone separately. If the problem persists only at an extreme setting, the stick may need service rather than more software compensation. A large deadzone can hide drift but also makes precise movement less responsive.
A paddle does nothing
Confirm that the paddle is assigned in the active profile, that the profile indicator is on the slot you edited, and that the game recognizes the mapped action. Test the paddle in Xbox Accessories before troubleshooting the game. If you assigned a keyboard key, verify keyboard support and the connection limitation for PC Bluetooth.
The trigger feels wrong after switching games
Check the physical trigger stops first. A short lock is appropriate for many digital shooting actions but can prevent the gradual input required for throttle, brake or analogue flight. Save separate FPS and racing profiles so the physical and software choices are deliberate.
Recommended Free Tools
A new curve feels faster but less accurate
Return to the previous curve, then change only the deadzone or tension. Curves, tension and topper height all change the sensation of speed, so changing several at once obscures the result. Keep notes in the profile name or a separate list while testing.
The controller is uncomfortable during a long session
Reduce the number of active paddles, try a different topper, and choose the lowest tension that still gives the required control. Reassign actions that force a finger to remain bent or that require the thumb to leave the stick repeatedly. Comfort is a functional requirement, especially for an accessibility profile.
A practical testing routine
Use a repeatable routine whenever you make a profile instead of judging it from the first few minutes.
- Start in the game’s practice, tutorial or low-risk area.
- Check every primary button, both stick clicks, bumpers, triggers, D-pad directions and each paddle.
- Move each stick slowly from center to edge and release it. Look for drift, dead spots or an abrupt change in output.
- For FPS, perform a small aim correction, a fast turn, a jump or slide, a reload and an interaction without leaving the aim stick.
- For racing, hold a straight line, make a gradual turn, apply partial throttle and brake, and shift through several gears if using paddles.
- For accessibility, repeat the most demanding sequence several times and check fatigue, accidental presses and menu navigation.
- Change one setting, repeat the same test and keep the version that improves the specific problem without creating another.
The Elite Series 2 is most effective when treated as a set of game-specific tools rather than a single permanent layout. Save the final FPS, racing and accessibility configurations to separate slots, keep the default profile available for troubleshooting, and switch profiles with the Profile button when the game changes.
