Best Xbox Consoles in 2026: Which Series X or Series S Should You Buy?

For the highest image quality, physical discs, and the most headroom, choose an Xbox Series X configuration. For a smaller, all-digital setup focused on 1440p gaming, an Xbox Series S is the better fit. The right purchase depends on your display, game library, storage needs, and whether you use discs; neither console is universally best.

The recommendations and configuration names below reflect Xbox’s US product and comparison pages accessed October 13, 2026. Prices, stock, and even which variants are sold can differ by country and retailer, so verify the exact model before ordering.

Quick answer: which Xbox is best for your priorities?

Your priority Best fit Why Important limitation
Native 4K gaming or physical game discs Xbox Series X with a disc drive Xbox positions Series X for native 4K, and selected models include a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive. Disc-drive and all-digital variants are different products; check the listing carefully.
Digital-only gaming at a lower display resolution Xbox Series S It is designed for 1440p gaming and can upscale output to 4K. There is no optical drive, so disc games cannot be used.
Maximum built-in storage 2 TB Xbox Series X Disc Drive The 2 TB configuration provides the largest internal SSD capacity in the listed range. Availability varies by market; do not assume this model is stocked locally.
Compact, all-digital secondary console Xbox Series S 512 GB or 1 TB Both Series S capacities support the same digital ecosystem and fit a disc-free setup. Large modern games can consume the available space quickly.
More installed games without replacing the console Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card Xbox says the dedicated card adds storage at the same performance as the internal custom SSD. It is sold separately; USB hard drives are supported but are not described as matching that performance.

Which Xbox Series X configurations are available?

Xbox’s US comparison lists three Series X configurations. The hardware family is the same generation, but the drive type, color, and storage capacity differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Configuration listed by Xbox US Drive Internal storage Color Best suited to
Xbox Series X 1 TB Disc Drive 4K UHD Blu-ray optical drive 1 TB custom SSD Carbon Black Players who buy physical games or UHD Blu-ray films and do not need the largest SSD.
Xbox Series X 1 TB All-Digital No optical drive 1 TB custom SSD Robot White Digital libraries that still require Series X’s native-4K positioning.
Xbox Series X 2 TB Disc Drive 4K UHD Blu-ray optical drive 2 TB custom SSD Galaxy Black Disc owners who install many large games and want the most internal space.

These are cataloged options on the US page, not a guarantee that every country or retailer sells all three. A product title that says “Series X” is not enough: confirm whether it says Disc Drive or All-Digital and whether the SSD is 1 TB or 2 TB.

What Xbox Series X offers

Performance and graphics position

The US Series X specification page lists a custom eight-core AMD Zen 2 CPU, a custom RDNA 2 GPU rated at 12 teraflops, and 16 GB of GDDR6 memory. Xbox describes the console as supporting true 4K gaming, up to 8K HDR capability, and a performance target of up to 120 frames per second. Those are manufacturer specifications and capability claims, not independent benchmark results. Actual resolution and frame rate depend on each game, its selected mode, and your display.

Display connections and features

Series X includes HDMI 2.1, variable refresh rate (VRR), and automatic low-latency mode (ALLM). To benefit from 4K at high refresh rates or VRR, the television or monitor must support the relevant HDMI features; simply owning a Series X does not make a standard 60 Hz screen run at 120 Hz. Some games offer a quality mode at higher resolution and a performance mode at a higher frame rate, while others do not expose both options.

Disc-drive choice

The Carbon Black 1 TB Disc Drive and Galaxy Black 2 TB Disc Drive models include an optical drive that Xbox identifies as a 4K UHD Blu-ray player. The 1 TB Robot White model is all-digital. A disc drive lets you use compatible physical Xbox games and Blu-ray media, but a disc still normally needs to be inserted when the installed game checks ownership. Digital purchases remain tied to your account.

Who should buy Series X?

  • You own a 4K television or monitor and want the console family’s native-4K positioning.
  • You already have a physical Xbox or backward-compatible disc collection.
  • You watch UHD Blu-ray discs and want one device for games and movies.
  • You prefer additional graphics headroom for demanding games and supported 120-FPS modes.
  • You want a 2 TB internal SSD and the 2 TB disc-drive model is available in your market.

What Xbox Series S offers

Resolution and digital design

Series S is an all-digital console. Xbox describes it as designed for 1440p gaming, with the ability to upscale output to 4K. Upscaling is not the same as rendering every game natively at 4K; the final result depends on the title and the television’s processing. There is no optical drive in either listed Series S capacity, so physical game discs cannot be installed or authenticated.

Available capacities

Configuration listed by Xbox US Drive Internal storage Color
Xbox Series S 512 GB All-Digital No optical drive 512 GB SSD Robot White
Xbox Series S 1 TB All-Digital No optical drive 1 TB SSD Carbon Black
Xbox Series S 1 TB All-Digital No optical drive 1 TB SSD Robot White

The listed SSD capacity is not all free for games because the operating system reserves space. A 512 GB model can therefore require more frequent uninstalling as your library grows; the 1 TB model gives that problem more breathing room but does not change the console’s digital-only design.

Frame-rate support

Xbox says Series S can reach up to 120 FPS when supported content is available and a compatible display is connected. “Up to 120 FPS” is a ceiling, not a promise for every game. Check the game’s published Xbox Series X|S features and your screen’s refresh-rate specifications before buying specifically for 120-FPS play.

Who should buy Series S?

  • You buy games digitally and do not need an optical drive.
  • Your main display is 1080p or 1440p, or you are comfortable with 4K upscaling rather than native 4K rendering.
  • You want a smaller, simpler console for a bedroom, office, or second gaming location.
  • You mainly play through a subscription catalog or a rotating digital library and can manage installed games.
  • You want to spend less on the console itself, while accepting that prices vary by market and retailer.

Series X versus Series S: the differences that matter

How to choose your console step by step

  1. Identify your display. If you have a 4K screen and care about native 4K modes, start with Series X. If your screen is 1080p or 1440p, Series S may deliver the experience you actually see.
  2. Audit your game ownership. Separate discs, digital purchases, and subscription access. Any meaningful disc collection rules out Series S and the all-digital Series X.
  3. Estimate installed storage. Count the games you keep installed for multiplayer, single-player campaigns, and local captures. Select 2 TB Series X where available, 1 TB where practical, or budget for an expansion card.
  4. Check your target frame rate. For 120-FPS play, verify that the specific games support it and that your television or monitor has a compatible high-refresh HDMI input. Neither console guarantees that mode universally.
  5. Verify local availability. Xbox’s US labels may not match your country’s inventory. Confirm the model number, drive type, capacity, included controller, warranty terms, and local power requirements with the retailer.
  6. Calculate the complete cost. Add an optional storage card, extra controller, display upgrade, and any subscription separately. Game Pass is not included automatically with the console.

Storage: internal SSD, expansion card, or USB drive?

Internal SSD

The internal custom SSD is the baseline for Series X|S game installation and system features such as Quick Resume. Capacity is fixed when you purchase the console, so choosing 1 TB instead of 512 GB is the simplest way to reduce storage juggling on a Series S.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card

The dedicated card plugs into the console’s rear expansion port. Xbox says it adds game storage at the same performance as the custom SSD, making it the appropriate add-on when you want to keep Series X|S games installed and retain the console’s intended loading behavior. The card is a separate purchase, and its capacity and price depend on the market.

USB 3.1 external hard drive

The official comparison lists USB 3.1 external HDD support. This is useful for storing compatible games, backward-compatible titles, captures, and other data, but the comparison does not say that a USB HDD reproduces the expansion card’s performance. In practice, newer optimized games may need to be moved back to the internal SSD or expansion card before they can run.

A practical storage plan

  • Choose 1 TB or 2 TB internally if you keep a large active library.
  • Use the expansion card for frequently played Series X|S games that you want ready to launch.
  • Use a USB HDD as an archive when capacity matters more than direct play from the drive.
  • Keep free space available for updates; a drive that is technically full can still prevent a patch from installing.

Games, accessories, and account continuity

Xbox says Series S supports thousands of games across four Xbox generations. Xbox One games, progress, achievements, and friends lists carry over, subject to the specific game and account. Series X|S consoles also support Xbox One gaming accessories. The Series X page qualifies this as “most” Xbox One controllers and gaming accessories, so check the exact model of an older headset, adapter, or specialist controller before assuming it works.

Each console is supplied with a controller, so an extra Xbox Wireless Controller is optional rather than required. It can be useful for local multiplayer or as a replacement, but confirm that the particular controller listing is compatible with your console and region.

Game Pass and the real ownership picture

Game Pass is an optional standalone subscription, not a guaranteed part of an Xbox console bundle. The catalog, plan names, benefits, prices, partner offers, and availability can change by geography and date. Treat any subscription shown by a retailer as a separate line item and verify its renewal terms before checkout.

Digital ownership also has practical consequences: you need an account and an internet connection for downloads, updates, and some license checks. A disc-drive Series X gives you a physical-media option, but it does not eliminate downloads because many disc-based games install substantial data and receive updates.

Display and setup requirements for the advertised features

For 4K and HDR

Use a 4K television or monitor with HDR support if you want to see the benefit of Series X’s 4K and HDR capabilities. Enable the appropriate HDMI input mode on the display, then run the console’s video calibration tools to detect supported formats. A display that accepts only 1080p will show an image, but it cannot display native 4K detail.

For 120 Hz and VRR

Confirm three links in the chain: the game must offer a high-frame-rate mode, the console must be connected to a compatible HDMI port, and the display must support 120 Hz and, for VRR, the relevant variable-refresh standard. Use the console’s TV and display options to see which combinations are actually detected. If 120 Hz disappears after adding an AV receiver, soundbar, or switch, test a direct console-to-display connection because an intermediate device may limit the HDMI signal.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Buying the wrong drive type

“Series X” does not always mean “disc drive.” The 1 TB Robot White configuration is all-digital, while the Carbon Black 1 TB and Galaxy Black 2 TB configurations listed by Xbox include an optical drive. Read the full product title and inspect the front of the console in retailer photographs.

Assuming every game runs at 4K or 120 FPS

Resolution and frame rate are software-dependent. Xbox’s up-to-120-FPS language requires supported content and a compatible display. Look for the game’s Xbox Series X|S enhancement notes and select its quality or performance mode after installation.

Confusing advertised capacity with usable capacity

Operating-system files reduce free space below the number printed on the box. If you install several large games, the 512 GB Series S may fill quickly. Choose 1 TB or plan an expansion solution before the problem appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting a USB HDD to behave like the expansion card

USB 3.1 storage is supported, but Xbox does not state that it matches the internal SSD or dedicated expansion card. Use USB storage primarily as an archive unless the game is confirmed to run from it.

Assuming an old accessory is guaranteed to work

Most Xbox One controllers and accessories are supported with Series X|S, but “most” is not “all.” Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for a particular headset, racing wheel, adapter, or specialist controller.

Using US configuration names as a worldwide shopping list

The configuration labels and colors above come from Xbox’s US pages. Stock, bundles, local model numbers, warranty coverage, and pricing can differ elsewhere. Verify the regional Xbox store or an authorized local retailer.

Questions buyers commonly ask

Is Series S good for a 4K television?

It can output to a 4K television and upscale 1440p-oriented rendering, but it is not positioned as a native-4K console. Choose Series X if native 4K detail is a central reason for the purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Series S play Xbox One discs?

No. Series S has no optical drive and is all-digital. A physical Xbox One game requires a disc-drive Series X configuration, assuming the title is compatible.

Does Series X include a subscription?

No subscription should be assumed. Game Pass is a separate optional purchase, and current plans and prices depend on market and date.

Do both consoles support backward-compatible games?

Xbox says both support thousands of games across four Xbox generations, with Xbox One progress, achievements, and friends lists carrying over. Compatibility and enhancements remain title-specific.

Which model has the most storage?

Among the configurations listed on Xbox’s US comparison page, the 2 TB Series X Disc Drive has the largest internal SSD. Availability is not universal, so confirm local stock.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Buy the Xbox Series X Disc Drive when you want native-4K positioning, physical media, UHD Blu-ray playback, or the option of 2 TB internal storage. Buy the Xbox Series S when your library is digital, your display target is 1440p or upscaled 4K, and compact simplicity matters more than disc support or maximum graphics headroom. Whichever family you choose, verify the exact capacity, drive type, display compatibility, accessory support, and regional availability before paying.
