For dependable gear decisions in World of Warcraft, start with the game’s own comparison tooltips and Item Upgrade vendor, then use Pawn to sort likely upgrades quickly. Read the item’s track, current rank, available ranks, weapon damage, stats, sockets, enchants and effects before spending currency. Treat item level as a useful baseline rather than an automatic verdict: set bonuses, trinket effects, weapon damage and specialization-specific stat weights can make a lower-level item the better choice.
The reliable comparison workflow
Use this sequence whenever you receive a possible upgrade:

- Hover the candidate and equipped item. Enable comparison tooltips and read both panels together. Note item level, primary and secondary stats, sockets, enchants, weapon damage where applicable, and the visible upgrade-track rank.
- Open the Item Upgrade vendor before buying anything. The vendor identifies upgradeable items, shows the item’s track and current level, and displays the currency cost for each available level.
- Compare the current rank and the highest affordable rank. A drop that looks weak now may become worthwhile after several affordable upgrades; an item with only one remaining rank may not justify scarce currency.
- Use Pawn for fast triage. Its Compare tab places the candidate beside your equipped item, calculates a score from your selected stat scale and can show a green upgrade arrow.
- Inspect exceptions manually. Verify set bonuses, unique effects, trinket mechanics, embellishments and other value that cannot be represented by simple stat weights. For close calls, use current simulation results rather than a generic scale.
This approach separates three questions that are often confused: what the item is worth at its present rank, what it could be worth after upgrades, and whether its special mechanics outweigh its numerical stats.

Turn on the information you need
The default game tooltip is the authoritative first check because it reflects the live client’s item level, track and rank. Make sure comparison tooltips are enabled in the interface settings, then hover an item in your bags, a vendor window, a loot frame or the character panel. The comparison panel should show the candidate beside the item currently occupying the relevant slot.

Read the fields in the right order
- Item level: the headline number and a rough indication of the item’s stat budget.
- Weapon damage: for weapons, compare damage range and attack-speed implications before looking only at secondary stats.
- Primary and secondary stats: record both gains and losses; a higher item level can shift the distribution in an unhelpful direction for your specialization.
- Sockets and enchants: an existing socket or enchant has value that may not appear in the raw item-level difference.
- Upgrade track and rank: the tooltip identifies the track and the item’s current position on it. This is the starting point for the vendor calculation, not merely decorative text.
- Special text: read equip, use, proc, set and class-specific effects in full. These frequently decide rings, trinkets and set pieces.
Do not compare an upgraded item to an unupgraded one as if the two numbers described the same state. Write down the candidate’s present rank, then check the vendor for its attainable rank before reaching a conclusion.
Upgrade tracks, ranks and the Item Upgrade vendor
How tracks determine the ceiling
Blizzard’s documented system assigns gear to an upgrade track based on the level at which the item was created. The named tracks in that overview are Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion and Hero. Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran and Champion have eight upgrade levels in that system; Hero has five. Blizzard summarizes the rule as: “The level an item is created at determines which upgrade path and level it’s created with.” An item can therefore have a high current level but a shorter remaining path than another item on a different track.
The official overview also states that each gear item can only be upgraded to a specific level. Track names, currencies, rank counts and caps are tied to the expansion and season, so use the live vendor rather than an old chart when the current client differs from those examples.

Use the vendor as a live calculator
- Find the Item Upgrade vendor in the current season’s hub and open the upgrade interface.
- Select or place the candidate item in the interface. The window should identify its track and current level.
- Read the cost beside each available upgrade level instead of relying on a memorized table.
- Compare the item at its present rank with the highest rank you can actually afford now.
- Cancel the purchase if the gain depends on currency you do not have or on a future discount that is not shown for your account.
Blizzard documented a maximum holding amount of 2,000 Flightstones in one 2023 version of the system. That cap is an expansion-specific example; verify the live cap and the currencies used by your season before planning a stockpile.
Slot-specific discounts and edge cases
For rings, trinkets and one-handed weapons, inspect both equipped slots and the account’s highest-slot discount rules when the current season supports them. A discount can change the cost calculation for a replacement even when the item’s displayed track is unchanged. Check the vendor’s actual price for the character and slot rather than assuming that two pieces with the same rank cost the same.

Install a release that matches the client
Check the addon’s current release and the game version before trusting its arrows. CurseForge lists Pawn 2.13.10 for Retail 12.0.7 and 12.0.5, uploaded May 14, 2026. Addon behavior can change with tooltip APIs, so an older build may score items or display comparisons differently from the current client.

Settings worth enabling

Import weights instead of accepting a generic scale
Pawn scores an item by applying stat weights. In Manual mode, replace its default values with weights from a current simulation or a spreadsheet that matches your class, specialization, talents, gear and intended content. Keep the scale values and upgrade percentage visible while learning how the addon reaches its result; once you understand the display, you can hide those details for a cleaner tooltip if desired.

Pawn’s documentation warns that stat weights are a simplified model and will never equal the advice from a simulator. Use the arrow to filter a large bag or loot list, not as the final authority on a close upgrade.
Why a higher item level is not always better
Item level often raises the budget available for stats, but it does not encode every source of damage, healing or survivability. Evaluate the following dimensions together:

| Embellishments and other special mechanics | Does the item enable a build effect that another item cannot? | These effects cannot always be reduced to one static weight. |
| Upgrade ceiling and price | How many ranks remain, and what currency is required? | A slightly weaker item with a long affordable path may beat a nearly capped drop. |
When two pieces are close, compare the complete package at the same rank: item level, weapon damage, stat deltas, sockets, enchants, set or special effects, current and maximum rank, currency cost and confidence in the weights or simulation.

A disciplined method for spending upgrade currency
Prioritize the right kind of improvement
Spend scarce crest-like currencies where three conditions align: the item has a meaningful modeled or simulated gain, several useful ranks remain, and no set or special effect makes the numerical comparison misleading. Upgrading a frequently used weapon or a cornerstone piece can be more valuable than polishing a slot that will be replaced immediately, but verify the actual path and price first.

Compare two states, not one
Record the candidate in its current state and at the highest rank the vendor currently makes affordable. If the item only wins after a cost you cannot pay, it is not an immediate upgrade. If it wins now and still has several ranks remaining, it is a stronger currency target than a piece whose advantage appears only at its final rank.
Account for replacement timing
Before upgrading, ask whether the slot is likely to change from a raid, dungeon, quest or set-piece acquisition you are actively pursuing. A modest gain on a temporary item may be less valuable than saving currency for a permanent piece, especially when the item’s track has a long path and no account discount applies.

Pawn cannot reliably score set bonuses and many special effects that do not reduce to static stat weights. A green arrow can therefore be directionally useful but still wrong for a tier breakpoint, a powerful trinket interaction, a proc-based build or a specialization that values stats differently in a particular encounter.

Run a current simulation with the same talents, consumables, encounter style and target count you expect to play. Compare the candidate and equipped item under identical conditions. If the result is within normal simulation noise, prefer the item with the better upgrade path, lower currency cost, stronger flexibility or more reliable effect rather than treating a tiny difference as certain.
Manually inspect set and special effects
- Check whether the replacement activates, breaks or changes a set bonus.
- Read trinket use and proc conditions, including cooldown alignment with your rotation.
- Confirm whether an embellishment or unique effect is already present elsewhere and whether duplicates are allowed.
- Recheck sockets and enchants after the swap; Pawn’s score does not automatically price every replacement decision.
Midnight and current-client troubleshooting
World-quest comparison is disabled
The Pawn 2.13.10 release notes state that world-quest interaction was disabled because of Midnight tooltip restrictions. This means an arrow or comparison that worked in an older client may not appear on a world-quest reward frame. It is a client limitation, not proof that the item has no upgrade value.
Use the documented map-hover workaround
For supported map-hover comparisons, hover the reward while using Pawn’s assigned comparison key binding. If no comparison appears, verify the binding, move the cursor over the item rather than the quest title, and confirm that the addon is enabled for the current character and client version.
When numbers look wrong
- Confirm that the addon release matches the Retail build shown on its release page.
- Open Pawn’s scale list and identify which scale is active.
- Replace old weights with current simulation-derived values in Manual mode.
- Recheck the native tooltip for track, rank, sockets, enchants and special text.
- Use the Item Upgrade vendor’s displayed cost and maximum rank as the final authority.
A quick checklist before you equip or upgrade
- Have you compared the candidate with the item in the correct slot?
- Did you read weapon damage as well as item level?
- Did you record gains and losses for every primary and secondary stat?
- Are sockets, enchants and existing embellishments included in the decision?
- Could a set bonus, trinket effect or other special mechanic dominate the result?
- What are the candidate’s current rank and highest affordable rank?
- What currency does the vendor actually request, and does a slot or account discount apply?
- Are Pawn’s weights current for your specialization and intended content?
- If the difference is close, did you validate it with a current simulation?
- Does the current client support Pawn comparison in the frame where you are looking?
Following the checklist keeps the fast part of the process fast—native tooltips and Pawn can sort possibilities in seconds—while reserving manual inspection and simulation for the cases where an item-level arrow cannot see the whole decision.
