There is no single best workout headphone for every sport. Swimming requires a model built for submersion and offline playback; running often benefits from an open-ear design that preserves environmental awareness; and gym users may prefer hooked in-ear buds with isolation, active noise cancellation (ANC) or workout sensors. Use the activity-specific recommendations below rather than treating sweat resistance as proof that a headphone can be used underwater.
Quick picks by workout
| Best for | Pick | Why it fits | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swimming and underwater audio | Shokz OpenSwim Pro | IP68 protection, a stated 2-meter (6.5-foot) rating, Bluetooth on land, built-in MP3 playback underwater and 32GB storage. Shokz lists up to 9 hours in Bluetooth mode and 6 hours in MP3 mode. | Bluetooth streaming is not the underwater playback method. Stay within the depth and care instructions. |
| Running with an open ear | Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 | Open-ear construction, secure fit and up to 12 hours of stated battery life; the design lets you hear traffic and other surroundings. | Its IP55 rating is for rain and sweat. Shokz says it is not for seawater, a sauna or a shower. |
| Gym or running with in-ear retention | Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 | Over-ear hooks, silicone coating, IPX4 protection, ANC and heart-rate sensors, according to RTINGS. | IPX4 is splash and sweat protection, not a swimming rating. ANC can reduce awareness outdoors. |
| Budget-oriented hooked earbuds | JBL Endurance Peak 3 | SoundGuys identifies it as a budget-conscious option with a hooked design, IP68 rating and nearly nine hours per charge. | Review-guide specifications and availability can change; verify the current model before buying. |
These are different solutions to different problems. The right choice depends on water exposure, fit security, awareness, playback source, battery needs and whether you want isolation or an open presentation.

How to choose workout headphones
Start with the activity and water exposure
Separate “gets sweaty” from “goes underwater.” A run in rain and a lap in a pool place very different demands on seals, controls and playback. An IP code describes tested ingress protection, but it does not automatically authorize every activity. Tom’s Guide explains that the first IP digit covers dust protection and the second covers water protection; it describes IPX4 as splash protection and warns that IPX7 alone does not make headphones suitable for swimming. Read the manufacturer’s intended-use statement and any depth limit for the exact model.
For open-water swimming, also check the manufacturer’s care directions. Shokz instructs OpenSwim Pro owners to rinse or soak the unit in fresh water after saltwater use. Salt can remain in ports and surfaces even when a device is rated for immersion.

You can easily control it without operating the phone. You can listen to the music while running, working, reading, meeting, etc. Wireless earbuds bluetooth compatible with most bluetooth-enabled devices such as cellphones, tablets, laptop, ect.
Choose how much awareness you need
- Open-ear: The speaker sits outside the ear canal, so you can generally hear traffic, other athletes and gym announcements. This is useful for road running, although louder surroundings may require more volume.
- In-ear with isolation: A sealed tip and ANC can make music easier to hear in a noisy gym. The trade-off is reduced awareness, especially with ANC enabled outdoors.
- Swimming playback: Underwater Bluetooth connections are unreliable because water attenuates radio signals. A swim-specific model needs onboard files or another offline source.
Prioritize retention before features
A workout headphone that shifts, loosens or falls out is a poor choice regardless of its codec or app. Over-ear hooks and ear wings can stabilize in-ear buds during lifting and sprints. Open-ear bands should sit firmly without pressing painfully behind the ears. Try the fit while moving your head, jumping and lying on a bench, not only while standing still.
Match battery claims to your playback mode
Battery figures are usually maximum estimates. Shokz lists OpenSwim Pro at up to 9 hours in Bluetooth mode and 6 hours in MP3 mode. The company notes that actual runtime varies with volume, audio source, interference, enabled features and usage habits. OpenRun Pro 2 is specified for up to 12 hours. Treat these as manufacturer specifications, not guaranteed results for every session.
Best headphones for swimming: Shokz OpenSwim Pro
What makes it suitable for the pool
OpenSwim Pro is the swimming-specific choice in this guide. Shokz gives it an IP68 rating and rates it to 2 meters (6.5 feet), addressing the submersion requirement that ordinary workout earbuds do not. Its key distinction is playback: Bluetooth works on land, while underwater listening uses the built-in MP3 mode. The device includes 32GB of onboard storage, so you load audio before entering the water. See the manufacturer’s OpenSwim Pro product information and OpenSwim Pro product page for the stated specifications and instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to use the two playback modes
- On land, pair over Bluetooth. Use Bluetooth for phone playback before or after a session, when the phone is within normal wireless range.
- For the water, transfer audio to the 32GB storage. Plan your playlist or spoken content before the swim; do not rely on a phone streaming through the water.
- Switch to MP3 mode before submersion. Confirm that the desired files play while you are still on deck.
- Respect the 2-meter rating. The depth figure is a stated product limit, not permission for diving beyond it.
- Rinse after saltwater use. Shokz says to rinse or soak the unit in fresh water after open-water swimming, then follow the drying and charging directions in the product documentation.
Battery expectations
| Mode | Stated maximum | What changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth | Up to 9 hours | Volume, source, wireless interference, features and personal usage habits. |
| MP3 | Up to 6 hours | The same variables, plus the files and playback pattern used during the swim. |
Because the MP3 figure is lower than the Bluetooth figure, charge before a long training block even if a previous land workout appeared to leave plenty of battery. The quoted runtimes come from Shokz specifications accessed in 2026; they are not an independent laboratory endurance test.
Who should not buy it
Do not choose OpenSwim Pro solely because it has a high IP rating if you only need rain protection and want modern phone features during runs. Its value is the combination of submersion protection and offline playback. Runners who never swim may get a simpler experience from an open-ear running model or hooked in-ear buds.
Best open-ear running headphones: Shokz OpenRun Pro 2
Why runners choose an open design
OpenRun Pro 2 places sound outside the ear canal, preserving a connection to ambient sound that sealed earbuds can reduce. Shokz describes it as open-ear with a secure fit and up to 12 hours of battery life. Tom’s Guide reports a reviewer’s opinion from multi-marathoner Nick Harris-Fry: “They’re my preferred running headphones at the moment because of the excellent fit, open design and good sound. If you just want running headphones with an open design, it’s the OpenRun Pro 2.” That is a reviewer quotation, not an independent laboratory measurement or a universal result.
The open format can be especially useful on roads, shared paths and city streets where hearing a vehicle, cyclist or approaching runner matters. It does not make you automatically safe: keep volume moderate, stay alert and follow local traffic rules.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Know the IP55 boundary
Shokz specifies IP55 for rain and sweat and explicitly excludes seawater, sauna and shower use. That means a wet run is within the stated use case, while a pool session or ocean swim is not. The manufacturer’s OpenRun Pro 2 product page and FAQ should be the authority for current care instructions.
Fit and comfort checks
- Place the transducers so they rest consistently in front of the ears rather than directly on the ear cartilage.
- Move your head side to side and jog in place; the band should remain stable without creating a pressure point.
- Test glasses, hats and winter layers with the headphones, because the band shares space around the ears.
- Keep the volume low enough to hear important environmental cues; open-ear does not eliminate the risk of masking sound at high volume.
Best hooked in-ear option for gym and running: Beats Powerbeats Pro 2
Some athletes prefer an ear-canal seal because it stays audible over treadmills, fans and weight-room noise. RTINGS lists Powerbeats Pro 2 with over-ear hooks, a silicone coating, IPX4 protection, ANC and heart-rate sensors. The hooks distribute retention beyond the ear tip, while the silicone surface is intended to help with a sweaty workout.
When this design is the better fit
- Choose hooked in-ear buds if ordinary earbuds loosen during sprints, burpees or heavy lifting.
- Consider ANC for indoor gyms where steady equipment noise competes with speech and music.
- Use an awareness or transparency mode, or reduce ANC, when running near traffic or other people.
- Heart-rate sensing can be useful if your training workflow supports it, but verify compatibility with the devices and apps you use.
IPX4 means protection against splashes and sweat in the cited guidance; it is not an underwater rating. Keep these earbuds out of pools and do not infer swimming suitability from the presence of ANC, hooks or a sealed ear tip.
Budget-oriented alternative: JBL Endurance Peak 3
SoundGuys names Endurance Peak 3 as a budget-conscious workout option and lists a hooked design, IP68 protection and nearly nine hours per charge. Those attributes make it a candidate for gym sessions and running when retention and a lower purchase tier matter more than an open-ear presentation or swim-specific offline design. The recommendation is based on the cited review guide, not a new hands-on test here.

IP ratings: what they do and do not tell you
Read the two digits separately
An IP code uses a first digit for protection against solids such as dust and a second digit for water. An “X” means that the corresponding part of the rating is not stated. Thus, IPX4 communicates water protection at the splash level without stating a dust number. The rating is a controlled test classification, not a blanket guarantee for chlorine, salt, soap, heat or repeated exposure.
Apply the rating to the manufacturer’s instructions
Tom’s Guide’s explanation is useful for the general distinction: IPX4 covers splashes, and IPX7 alone does not mean headphones should be taken swimming. For a specific product, follow the maker’s depth, temperature and cleaning rules. OpenSwim Pro’s stated 2-meter limit and OpenRun Pro 2’s exclusion of seawater, sauna and shower use illustrate why the product instructions matter more than comparing numbers in isolation.
Account for water type and maintenance
- Pool water: Chlorine can be harsher than fresh water; rinse equipment according to the manufacturer’s directions.
- Saltwater: Salt residue requires fresh-water rinsing for OpenSwim Pro, as Shokz specifies.
- Hot environments: Sauna use is a separate heat and moisture risk. OpenRun Pro 2 is specifically not intended for it.
- Showers: Water pressure, soap and heat differ from the conditions behind an IP test. Do not assume a splash rating covers showering.
Bluetooth versus onboard audio for training
Bluetooth is convenient on land
Phone streaming gives you podcasts, live playlists, calls and app controls without transferring files. It works well for the gym and ordinary runs when the phone remains within wireless range. ANC, transparency settings and other active features can also be managed from the paired device, depending on the product.
Offline storage is essential underwater
Water interferes with the radio path between a submerged headphone and a phone at the surface or on the pool deck. OpenSwim Pro therefore switches to onboard MP3 playback underwater. Prepare files before the session and verify that the controls are usable without looking at a screen. This is a different workflow from land headphones, but it is the reason the model can provide continuous audio during a swim.
Decision guide: pick by your actual routine
| If your routine looks like this | Start with | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Pool laps or open-water swimming with music | OpenSwim Pro | Submersion rating, 2-meter limit and MP3 storage address underwater use. |
| Road running where hearing surroundings matters | OpenRun Pro 2 | Open-ear design and secure fit support awareness and movement. |
| Busy gym, intervals or lifting where earbuds fall out | Powerbeats Pro 2 | Over-ear hooks, silicone coating and optional ANC emphasize retention and isolation. |
| Workout use with a budget focus and a hooked fit | Endurance Peak 3 | SoundGuys lists the hooked design, IP68 rating and nearly nine-hour per-charge figure. |
| One device for swimming, running and gym sessions | Use a two-device plan | No candidate combines the cited swim-specific submersion and offline playback requirements with the ideal land-running and gym characteristics in one universally suitable model. |
The last row is not a failure of the category; it reflects incompatible priorities. A swim model must handle immersion and offline audio, while a land model can prioritize phone connectivity, ANC, transparency and longer Bluetooth runtime.
Setup checklist before the first workout
- Confirm the activity rating. Verify whether the exact model is approved for immersion, rain, sweat or none of these.
- Charge fully. Use the mode-specific battery estimate, not the highest number printed in a listing.
- Fit-test under movement. Run, jump, bend and turn your head; adjust hooks, tips or the open-ear band before relying on the headphones.
- Choose an awareness setting. Use open-ear or transparency for outdoor environments; reserve stronger isolation for controlled indoor spaces.
- Prepare offline files for swimming. Load and test MP3 playback before entering the water.
- Set a safe volume. Increase only enough to hear your content while retaining useful environmental awareness.
- Plan cleaning and drying. Follow the product’s instructions after sweat, pool water or saltwater exposure; do not charge a wet device.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“IP68 means I can swim with it”
Not necessarily. The rating is only one part of the evidence. Look for an explicit swimming use case, a depth limit and a playback method that works underwater. OpenSwim Pro has those stated details; an IP label on a running earbud does not automatically provide them.
“A higher battery number is always better”
Compare like with like. OpenSwim Pro’s up-to-9-hour Bluetooth figure and up-to-6-hour MP3 figure are different modes. OpenRun Pro 2’s up-to-12-hour figure is a separate product specification. Volume, interference and feature use can reduce any of these maximums.
“ANC is ideal for every run”
ANC can improve clarity in a loud gym but may reduce awareness outside. Use an awareness mode or an open-ear model near roads, crossings and shared paths, and keep volume controlled.
“A secure fit means a comfortable fit”
Hooks, bands and tight tips can prevent movement while creating pressure over time. Wear the headphones through a short easy session first, then reassess hotspots, skin irritation and stability before a long workout.
“Saltwater care is the same as sweat care”
Salt residue can remain after an ocean swim. Shokz specifically advises rinsing or soaking OpenSwim Pro in fresh water after open-water use. Follow equivalent instructions for any other product rather than improvising with soap, heat or compressed air.
What the published evidence can and cannot establish
Manufacturer pages are the primary source for stated ratings, storage and battery figures. Editorial guides add comparative context and reviewer assessments: SoundGuys’ 2026 workout guide, RTINGS’ running and workout selection, TechRadar’s sport-focused guide and Tom’s Guide’s workout guide provide that context. The cited material does not establish a category-wide market statistic or an independent laboratory ranking for every model. Prices, stock, retailer bundles and regional variants can change, so verify those details at the time you buy.

Final recommendation
Buy for the sport first. Choose OpenSwim Pro when you need genuine submersion protection and offline underwater audio. Choose OpenRun Pro 2 when open-ear awareness is the priority for running and your exposure is limited to rain and sweat. Choose Powerbeats Pro 2 when hooked in-ear retention, isolation, ANC and heart-rate sensing suit your gym or running routine. Consider Endurance Peak 3 when a hooked, budget-oriented option is the goal, but verify its current specifications and intended use. Treat water ratings as boundaries to respect, not as a shortcut to a universal “waterproof workout headphone.”
