For a sealed, hook-secured workout earbud, start with the JBL Endurance Peak 3 as the clearest documented alternative to Beats Powerbeats Pro 2. JBL lists IP68 dust and water protection, ambient-listening modes, replaceable hook enhancers and up to 50 hours of total playback. Choose Powerbeats Pro 2 instead if you specifically want active noise cancellation, Transparency mode, workout heart-rate sensing and wireless-case charging. The soundcore Sport X20 is a lower-priced hook-style candidate, but the current manufacturer listing does not provide enough dedicated specifications for a fair feature comparison. If hearing traffic and gym announcements matters more than a sealed ear-canal fit, JBL Endurance Zone is a separate open-ear choice, not a direct in-ear rival.
Quick verdict: which ear-hook workout earbud fits your priorities?
| Best for | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Most features in a sealed design | Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 | ANC, Transparency mode, workout heart-rate sensors, five eartip sizes and a manufacturer-rated 45 hours with its wireless charging case. |
| Closest documented sealed Beats alternative | JBL Endurance Peak 3 | IP68 protection, Ambient Aware and TalkThru, a bendable TwistLock enhancer, replaceable fit parts and up to 50 hours total playback. |
| Lower displayed manufacturer price | soundcore Sport X20 | The US sport collection showed $79.99 for a hook-style in-ear model, but it does not establish the detailed specifications needed for a full comparison. |
| Hearing your surroundings | JBL Endurance Zone | Open-ear construction leaves the ear canal unobstructed and is designed around environmental awareness rather than sealed isolation. |
Every battery figure above is a manufacturer claim, not a uniform independent measurement. Ear shape, tip choice, volume, radio conditions and use of ANC or ambient modes can change real-world endurance. A hook keeps an earbud from dropping as easily, but it cannot guarantee comfort or a stable seal for every ear.

Beats Powerbeats Pro 2: the feature-rich reference
Beats describes Powerbeats Pro 2 as an in-ear earbud with flexible nickel-titanium alloy-reinforced earhooks. The package includes five eartip sizes, giving you more opportunities to match the nozzle to your ear canal than a model supplied with only one or two sizes. Beats also lists active noise cancellation, Transparency mode and workout heart-rate sensors, so this is the most feature-dense option in this comparison.

- Retention: the reinforced hooks carry some of the load instead of asking the silicone tip alone to hold the earbud in place.
- Listening modes: ANC is intended to reduce outside sound, while Transparency mode is intended to let outside sound through. They are different operating modes, not interchangeable labels.
- Heart-rate sensing: Beats lists workout heart-rate sensors. The product page does not establish accuracy for your particular activity, device or body.
- Fit adjustment: five eartip sizes make it easier to experiment with seal and pressure.
- Charging endurance: Beats reports up to 45 hours with the wireless charging case.
Claims that need context
Beats says its fit testing covered “over 1,500 hours” and “nearly 1,000 athletes,” and says Powerbeats Pro 2 is “20% lighter than the original.” Those are manufacturer-reported comparison and testing claims, not independent validation. The company also states that finding the right fit is crucial for comfort, sound quality and heart-rate accuracy. That is sensible guidance, but testing participants cannot guarantee the same result for your ears.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Water resistance and limits
The stated rating is IPX4 sweat and water resistance. Treat that as the earbud rating Beats publishes; do not infer that the wireless charging case is waterproof or that IPX4 offers the same protection as an IP68 product. Wipe the earbuds dry before placing them in the case, and follow the manufacturer’s care instructions if you train in heavy rain.
JBL Endurance Peak 3: the best-documented sealed alternative
JBL lists the Endurance Peak 3 with a bendable TwistLock ear-hook enhancer. The hook can be shaped around the outer ear, while the in-ear tip supplies the acoustic seal. JBL also lists a 10 mm dynamic driver, Ambient Aware and TalkThru modes, IP68 dust and water protection, and up to 10 hours in the earbuds plus 40 hours from the case.
Why it is the closest comparison
Peak 3 follows the same basic sealed-plus-hook strategy as Powerbeats Pro 2, so the comparison is meaningful for runners, lifters and cyclists who want physical retention rather than a small bud held only by a tip. Its published protection rating is substantially different from Beats’ IPX4 designation, but ratings should be compared exactly as written rather than converted into a promise of unlimited water exposure.

JBL lists model-specific replacement ear tips and enhancers. That matters if a tip stretches, tears or becomes uncomfortable, or if you need a different hook shape after extended use. Before ordering replacements, confirm that the part is for Endurance Peak 3 rather than another Endurance model.

soundcore Sport X20: a lower-priced candidate with limited published detail
soundcore’s current US sport collection lists “Sport X20 | True Wireless Earbuds for Exercise” and describes it as an in-ear sport earbud with a hook. The collection page displayed $79.99 USD during the research date.
That page is not a dedicated technical specification sheet. It does not, by itself, establish the Sport X20’s battery endurance, ingress rating, ANC performance, driver size, charging method or control layout. You can consider it a promising lower-cost category match, but do not assume that it has the Powerbeats or JBL feature set. Open the dedicated model page at purchase time and verify the current specifications, included tips, return terms and stock.

JBL describes Endurance Zone as an open-ear sport headphone with a high-grade silicone earhook and adaptable memory wire. It leaves the ear canal unobstructed, so it belongs in a different category from Powerbeats Pro 2, Peak 3 and Sport X20.
Published specifications
- IP68 protection rating listed by JBL.
- Up to 8 hours per charge, plus up to 24 hours from the case.
- Adjustable 10-band EQ in the app.
- A hook and memory-wire arrangement intended to stay positioned without sealing the canal.
Open-ear listening can make it easier to hear traffic, colleagues, announcements and other surroundings. The trade-off is that it generally does not provide the same sealed isolation as an in-ear earbud, so a noisy gym or train may be more audible. Choose it when awareness is the first requirement, not when maximum passive isolation is the goal.
Where JLab fits in the search
Tom’s Guide’s review of JLab Epic Sport ANC 3 discusses its controls, comfort, sound and price, and characterizes its ANC as mediocre. The same article presents Go Sport+ as a lower-priced ear-hook option. Those are editorial observations from that review, not a controlled comparison performed for this article. Verify each model’s current battery, protection rating, price and availability before using it as an alternative.

Sealed versus open-ear: make this decision first
| Question | Sealed in-ear hook | Open-ear hook |
|---|---|---|
| Ear canal | Covered by an eartip and acoustic seal. | Left unobstructed. |
| Typical reason to choose it | More isolation and a consistent in-ear sound path. | Awareness of traffic, people and announcements. |
| Fit variables | Tip size, nozzle pressure, hook shape and ear anatomy. | Hook position, memory-wire adjustment and ear anatomy. |
| Direct example here | Powerbeats Pro 2, Endurance Peak 3 or Sport X20. | Endurance Zone. |
Neither design is universally safer or more comfortable. On roads, trails and busy campuses, awareness may outweigh isolation. In a loud indoor gym, a sealed earbud may let you listen at a lower volume, provided you can still respond to people and alarms. Local rules and the conditions of your route should decide whether you use an ambient mode, open-ear design or no headphones at all.
Fit and comfort: hooks reduce drop risk, not individual pressure
Tom’s Guide’s running-headphone guide notes that earhooks tend to be the most secure retention style, while wings and smaller in-ear buds can be more comfortable for some people. It also points out that small buds may be more practical for some glasses wearers. This is a useful starting point, not a guarantee: the temple of glasses, the angle of your ear and the thickness of the hook can all change pressure.
Use the tips and hook independently
- Start with the eartip that fills the canal without forcing the earbud deeply inward.
- Seat the earbud, then rotate or position the hook until it rests around the outer ear rather than pressing into the cartilage.
- Walk, turn your head, perform several squats and move your jaw. If the seal breaks or the hook shifts, try another tip or hook position.
- Compare both ears separately. Many people have slightly different canal sizes, so matching tip sizes by ear can be more comfortable than using one size everywhere.
- Wear the pair for at least 20 to 30 minutes before deciding. Immediate stability can hide pressure that becomes painful later.
Check the return policy before opening the package
Fit is personal and cannot be settled by a manufacturer’s athlete count or by another runner’s experience. Buy from a seller that clearly explains opened-earbud returns, hygiene restrictions and the period for testing comfort. Keep every tip and enhancer until you know the fit works.
Durability: read IP ratings literally
| Model | Published rating | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Powerbeats Pro 2 | IPX4 | Beats states sweat and water resistance for the earbuds; case protection is not established by this rating. |
| JBL Endurance Peak 3 | IP68 | JBL lists dust and water protection for the product; do not assume the charging case shares the same rating without explicit confirmation. |
| JBL Endurance Zone | IP68 | JBL lists the rating for this open-ear sport headphone; verify how it applies to the case and charging accessories. |
| soundcore Sport X20 | Not stated on the cited collection page | Check the dedicated current product page before buying for wet-weather use. |
IP codes are not a substitute for usage instructions. Sweat, rain, salt, soap and repeated charging can still affect contacts and seals. Do not swim with any model unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it, and never treat an IP rating on the earbuds as proof that the case can be submerged.
Battery claims: separate earbuds from case totals
| Model | Earbud claim | Case-supported claim | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Powerbeats Pro 2 | Not separately stated in the cited summary | Up to 45 hours with the wireless charging case | Beats manufacturer figure; actual life varies with listening mode and volume. |
| Endurance Peak 3 | Up to 10 hours | Up to 40 additional hours | JBL manufacturer specification, for up to 50 hours total. |
| Endurance Zone | Up to 8 hours | Up to 24 additional hours | JBL manufacturer specification, for up to 32 hours total. |
| Sport X20 | Not stated on the cited collection page | Not stated on the cited collection page | Verify on the dedicated model page. |
“Up to” is a ceiling under the manufacturer’s test conditions, not a promise for every workout. ANC, Transparency or ambient processing, high volume, phone distance and cold weather can reduce runtime. If you train for long events, compare the separately stated earbud runtime, not only the headline case total.

Noise and awareness modes are not equivalent
Powerbeats Pro 2 lists ANC and Transparency mode. ANC attempts to reduce external sound; Transparency is intended to pass external sound through. Endurance Peak 3 lists Ambient Aware and TalkThru. Those names indicate JBL’s listening features, but they do not establish that they match Beats’ cancellation strength, transparency tuning or microphone behavior.
Use the quietest mode that still lets you stay aware of your setting. For intervals in a loud gym, ANC may make music easier to hear; for a street crossing or conversation, Transparency or Ambient Aware can be more appropriate. Open-ear Endurance Zone avoids the sealed-canal decision entirely, at the cost of less isolation.
Controls, calls and workout handling
Hooked earbuds are designed to remain in position while you move, but controls still matter. Before a run, confirm how you pause, skip, answer a call and switch listening modes without reaching for your phone. The cited product information establishes the named modes for Powerbeats Pro 2 and Peak 3, but it does not provide a uniform control map or call-quality measurement across the models.
Test controls with sweaty or gloved fingers if that matches your training. A control that is easy to find by touch is more useful than one that requires looking at a screen mid-run. Also check whether pressing the earbud pushes the tip deeper into the canal; if it does, adjust the hook or use a different tip.

Road running and outdoor cycling
Prioritize awareness and a retention system that stays put when you turn your head. Endurance Zone’s open-ear design is the clearest fit for readers who want an unobstructed ear canal. If you prefer a sealed sound, use Powerbeats Pro 2 Transparency or Peak 3 Ambient Aware where appropriate, and follow local traffic and headphone rules.

Indoor gym and strength training
A sealed hook-style earbud can provide a stable seal through lifting, rowing and circuit work. Powerbeats Pro 2 offers the broadest documented feature set; Peak 3 offers the stronger published dust-and-water rating and replaceable enhancers. Choose by comfort and mode preference rather than by driver size alone.
Long sessions and travel after training
Compare case totals and earbud-only endurance separately. Peak 3’s published 10-hour earbud figure and 40-hour case figure favor fewer charging stops on paper. Powerbeats Pro 2’s 45-hour case total and wireless charging support may fit a different travel routine. Endurance Zone’s 8-hour earbud and 24-hour case figures are adequate for many sessions but are lower than Peak 3’s stated totals.
People who wear glasses
Glasses temples can compete for the same space as an earhook. Tom’s Guide notes that smaller in-ear buds may be more practical for some glasses wearers, but individual results vary. Try the hooks with your actual frames and use the return window if pressure develops.
Price and availability: verify at checkout
The cited pages are time-sensitive. JBL’s US page displayed $109.95 for Endurance Peak 3, and soundcore’s US collection displayed $79.99 for Sport X20 on the research date. Those observations are not guaranteed current prices, promotions or stock status. Powerbeats Pro 2 and Endurance Zone pricing was not established in the cited material, so no exact comparison is made here.
Before purchasing, confirm your country or region, color and model generation, included charging case, replacement-part availability, delivery date and return policy. A lower sticker price is not necessarily better value if the fit fails or replacement enhancers are unavailable.
A practical buying checklist
- Choose the listening architecture: sealed in-ear for isolation, or open-ear for maximum awareness.
- Set your retention requirement: compare hook shape, adjustability and whether replacement enhancers are sold.
- Set your water requirement: compare the exact published rating; do not infer case protection.
- Choose essential modes: ANC and Transparency on Powerbeats Pro 2, Ambient Aware and TalkThru on Peak 3, or no sealed canal on Endurance Zone.
- Calculate battery needs: write down earbud-only hours and case-added hours separately.
- Check fit flexibility: count tip sizes, look for replacement parts and consider glasses or different-sized ears.
- Verify the live offer: confirm current price, stock, regional warranty and opened-earbud return conditions.
- Test before committing: walk, run, sweat lightly and wear the earbuds long enough to reveal pressure points.
Care and troubleshooting during regular training
If an earbud loosens
- Try the next tip size rather than tightening the hook until it hurts.
- Re-seat the earbud after cleaning sweat from the tip and outer ear.
- Check whether your glasses, hat or helmet strap is pushing the hook out of position.
If charging becomes intermittent
- Inspect the earbud and case contacts for moisture or debris.
- Let everything dry fully before closing the case.
- Confirm that both earbuds sit completely in their charging wells.
If sound seems unbalanced
- Check that both tips form a seal and that one earbud has not rotated away from the canal.
- Clean the acoustic openings according to the manufacturer’s instructions; do not push debris inward.
- Try the earbuds without ANC or ambient processing to determine whether the issue is fit or a listening-mode setting.
These checks address common fit and contact problems, but they do not replace the manufacturer’s support procedure for a defective unit.
Final recommendation
Choose JBL Endurance Peak 3 when you want the closest clearly documented sealed alternative to Powerbeats Pro 2, especially if IP68 protection, replaceable hook parts and long stated case endurance matter. Choose Powerbeats Pro 2 when ANC, Transparency, heart-rate sensing, five tip sizes and wireless-case charging justify its feature focus. Choose soundcore Sport X20 only after confirming its dedicated current specifications. Choose JBL Endurance Zone when preserving awareness is more important than a sealed in-ear sound.
