For a new general-purpose WordPress site, choose Settings → Permalinks → Post name, then click Save Changes. WordPress will use a short, readable path based on each page or post’s slug, without database numbers or publication dates. Write slugs in lowercase, use hyphens between words, and keep the wording specific enough that a reader can understand the destination before opening it.
Use /%category%/%postname%/ only when your category hierarchy is stable and genuinely helps people navigate. Choose a date-based structure when publication time is part of the content’s identity, such as a news archive. If an established site changes its structure, preserve old links with permanent redirects and verify every important URL afterward.

What a WordPress permalink is
A permalink is the permanent web address assigned to a WordPress post, page, category archive, tag archive, or other public resource. WordPress documentation describes the goal directly: “The URL to each post should be permanent and never change — hence the name permalink.” The setting determines the pattern WordPress uses when it generates those addresses.
A permalink has a domain and a path. For example, in https://example.com/wordpress-permalink-settings/, the domain is example.com and the path is /wordpress-permalink-settings/. The final portion is the post slug. A good structure makes that path understandable to people, stable over time, and easy to copy, quote, crawl, and maintain.

Permalinks are not a magic ranking switch. A clear URL can help users recognize a result and can make a site easier to organize, but search visibility also depends on the page’s content, links, accessibility, performance, and many other factors. The practical objective is a durable, descriptive address rather than a claim that one pattern guarantees higher rankings.
The best structure for most new sites: Post name
For most new blogs, documentation sites, portfolios, and business websites, Post name is the best default. It produces a path such as:
https://example.com/wordpress-permalink-settings/Instead of exposing an internal identifier or adding a date, the path uses the post’s slug. It is short enough to share, readable in search results and messages, and usually remains valid if the article is updated years after publication.

WordPress still displays several built-in alternatives in the Permalinks screen. The label is not a quality score; it is simply a template choice. Select the pattern that reflects how the site is actually published, not one that appears more technical.

The comparison is about maintainability and communication, not a controlled ranking test. No authoritative source establishes a numerical ranking advantage for one pattern over another.
When category and post name is worth using
A custom structure such as /%category%/%postname%/ creates addresses like:

https://example.com/wordpress/wordpress-permalink-settings/The category can tell a reader where the article belongs and can make a large knowledge base easier to scan. It is useful when categories are carefully designed sections that will remain meaningful for years. A technical documentation site with stable product areas is a stronger candidate than a personal blog whose categories change with every editorial experiment.
Category-in-URL is an information-architecture decision, not a universal SEO requirement. The additional segment makes every address longer and couples the post’s identity to its taxonomy. If an article moves from “Guides” to “News,” or if you rename a category, the URL may change. That creates redirect work and increases the chance that old links are missed.
Use category paths when all of these are true
- Your categories represent durable sections rather than temporary labels.
- Readers benefit from seeing the section in a copied or printed URL.
- You have rules for assigning one primary category to each post.
- You can maintain redirects when a category is renamed, merged, or removed.
Prefer Post name when any of these are true
- The site is new and its information architecture is still changing.
- Posts commonly move between categories.
- The category adds no useful information for someone reading the link.
- You want the shortest practical path for evergreen content.
When dates belong in WordPress URLs
Day and name and Month and name communicate chronology. They make sense for a news archive, an event publication, or another site where the date is part of the content’s identity. A reader can immediately see whether a report was published on a particular day or month.

Dates are usually unnecessary for evergreen tutorials, reference pages, product documentation, and service articles. They lengthen every path and can make an updated article look old even when its information is current. If you publish a revised guide in 2026 that still carries a 2022 path, the date may create confusion for users who judge freshness from the URL.
Do not remove dates from an established site casually. A date-based address is already a public identifier. Changing it is a migration, not a cosmetic edit; follow the redirect and verification process below.
How to configure permalinks in WordPress
- Sign in to the WordPress administrator dashboard with an account allowed to change settings.
- Open Settings → Permalinks. WordPress displays Plain, Day and name, Month and name, Numeric, Post name, and Custom structure.
- For most new sites, select Post name. For a deliberate hierarchy, select Custom structure and enter the exact pattern, such as
/%category%/%postname%/. - Review the category and tag base fields. Change them only when a clearer archive path is needed; unnecessary prefixes add words without adding meaning.
- Click Save Changes. WordPress applies the selected structure and refreshes its rewrite rules after this action. Merely selecting an option without saving does not complete the change.
- Open a representative post, page, category archive, and tag archive in a new browser tab. Confirm that each address follows the intended pattern and that the content loads.
On a new installation, make this choice before publishing a large library of content. Early consistency avoids a later URL migration.
How to write a readable WordPress slug
The slug should use the words a reader would naturally choose to describe the page. For an article about permalink configuration, /wordpress-permalink-settings/ is clearer than /p=123/ or /best-wordpress-permalink-settings-for-readable-seo-friendly-urls-in-2026/.
Slug rules that hold up over time
- Use lowercase consistently. URL paths can be case-sensitive on many servers. Mixed capitalization can create duplicate-looking addresses or broken links.
- Separate words with hyphens. Search systems and people generally parse hyphens as word boundaries more reliably than underscores.
- Describe the destination. Include the subject’s essential words, not a string of internal campaign labels.
- Remove unnecessary words carefully. Shorten a slug only when the meaning stays unambiguous and the shorter version will not collide with another page.
- Avoid needless query parameters. Tracking parameters belong in campaign links when required, not in the canonical permalink pattern.
- Keep the wording stable. Do not change a published slug merely to add a new keyword or match a temporary headline.
- Check uniqueness. WordPress must distinguish two pages with similar titles; a specific slug prevents confusing suffixes and redirects.

Do not remove a category word, date, or stop word automatically. Keep it when removing it would change the meaning, create a collision, or make the address misleading.

Changing permalinks on an existing site without breaking links
Changing the pattern changes public URLs. Bookmarks, search results, social posts, email links, feeds, and links from other sites may still point to the old addresses. A safe migration maps every important old URL to its exact new equivalent and returns a permanent redirect rather than a generic error page.
- Back up or export the site. Keep a recoverable copy of the database and files before changing the structure.
- Inventory the old URLs. Export published posts, pages, categories, and other indexable resources. Include high-traffic and externally linked addresses.
- Design the new pattern. Decide whether the destination is Post name, a category path, or a date-based structure. Avoid changing the pattern and every slug at the same time unless there is a compelling reason.
- Build an old-to-new map. Each old path should point to one final destination. Avoid sending all old URLs to the home page; that loses context and can be treated as a soft error.
- Apply the new setting. Use Settings → Permalinks, select the structure, and click Save Changes.
- Issue permanent redirects. Configure the web server or a trusted redirect mechanism so each old URL returns a permanent redirect to its matching new URL. Preserve protocol, host, path, and any required query handling.
- Update internal links. Replace old paths in navigation, menus, related-article modules, media captions, author pages, and content. Internal links should point directly to the final URL rather than pass through a redirect.
- Update canonical URLs and XML sitemaps. The canonical value and sitemap entry for each page should use the new address, not the old one.
- Review feeds and campaign links. RSS or Atom feeds, newsletters, saved templates, QR codes, and advertising destinations may contain the former path.
- Crawl and sample-test the migration. Check representative old URLs, new URLs, redirects, 404 responses, and redirect chains. Fix any loop, incorrect destination, or chain with more than one hop.
Keep redirects in place for as long as old links can reasonably be expected to circulate. A migration is complete only when the new URLs work, important old URLs resolve correctly, and the site’s own references consistently use the new pattern.
Common failure modes and fixes
Posts return a 404 immediately after saving
First reopen Settings → Permalinks and click Save Changes again. This refreshes WordPress rewrite rules. If the problem persists, the server may not be applying the rewrite configuration required by the selected structure. Check the hosting stack’s WordPress rewrite support and server configuration, then test a single post before changing the entire site again.
Only the home page works
This usually indicates that requests are not being routed to WordPress’s front controller. Verify the server’s rewrite rules, the site’s document root, and any caching layer that may be serving an old response. Purge the relevant cache only after confirming the new URL works at the origin.
Two URLs show the same content
Choose one preferred address, make the canonical value and internal links consistent, and redirect the duplicate to the preferred URL when it is genuinely the same resource. Avoid creating multiple equivalent paths through unnecessary parameters or category aliases.
A category change unexpectedly changes article URLs
This is an inherent cost of /%category%/%postname%/. Restore the intended category path if appropriate, then add a permanent redirect from the former address. If categories change frequently, consider moving future content to Post name after planning a full migration.
Capitalization or punctuation creates a second path
Use one lowercase, hyphenated slug and redirect alternate forms where the server treats them as separate paths. Update internal links so they never create the alternate form again.
Redirects form a chain or loop
Inspect the old-to-new map and remove intermediate rules. Every old URL should go directly to one final canonical URL. Check both HTTP-to-HTTPS and host redirects so they do not stack unnecessarily.
Choosing a structure by site type

For a legacy site, the best setting may be the one already working reliably. Readability matters, but it does not justify breaking a large link graph without a migration plan.
A practical pre-publish checklist
- The permalink structure matches the site’s publishing model.
- The slug uses ordinary words, lowercase letters, and hyphens.
- The path is specific without repeating the entire headline.
- No date or category segment has been added solely because it is available.
- The slug will still describe the page if the article is updated.
- The address is unique and does not depend on unnecessary parameters.
- After saving the setting, a post, page, category, and tag URL have been opened and checked.
What to verify after publication
Check the final URL from a logged-out browser and from a device or network that is not using an old cache. Confirm that navigation and related-content links use the final path. Inspect the page’s canonical URL and the XML sitemap entry. If the site recently migrated, sample old URLs and confirm they redirect directly to the correct new pages, while genuinely missing resources return a proper not-found response.
Keep a record of the chosen structure and the rules behind slug decisions. That small piece of documentation helps future editors avoid changing a public address for a cosmetic title edit.
