For most new WooCommerce stores, start by evaluating WooPayments, Stripe, PayPal Payments and Square. The best choice depends on where your business is registered, how customers want to pay, whether you bill subscriptions, the real cost of international transactions and disputes, and how much processor-level control your team needs. There is no universally cheapest gateway: the same card mix can cost different amounts in different countries.
This guide explains what each option is suited to, how subscriptions and payment methods affect the decision, what to check before installing a plugin, and how to test a gateway without risking live orders.

What a WooCommerce payment gateway actually does
A gateway connects the checkout in your WooCommerce store to a payment processor. It presents payment fields or an express wallet, requests authorization, returns an approval or decline, and sends status updates back to WooCommerce. The integration also has to handle captures, refunds, saved payment methods, recurring renewals, fraud checks and webhooks that update an order after checkout.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWooCommerce gateways are plugin integrations built against the WooCommerce Payment Gateway API. That means the processor’s commercial terms are only part of the decision. The plugin’s maintenance record, compatibility with your WooCommerce and WordPress versions, checkout-block support, webhook handling and quality of support can determine whether a theoretically good processor works reliably in practice.

|---|---|---|---|
| WooPayments | Stores that want the most WooCommerce-native workflow | Built exclusively for WooCommerce; unified payment and order workflow; supported local methods where available | Is it available in the merchant’s country? What are the exact local, international, conversion and dispute charges? Will the team need controls available only in the full Stripe dashboard? |
| Stripe for WooCommerce | Businesses that want Stripe’s direct processor relationship, wallet ecosystem or operating model | Direct Stripe integration and access to Stripe’s processor environment | Does the official extension support the current WooCommerce stack and required subscription flow? Are the merchant country and desired payment methods supported under the account’s terms? |
| PayPal Payments | Stores whose customers expect PayPal account checkout, in addition to cards | PayPal checkout alongside card processing; WooCommerce’s subscriptions matrix lists it as subscription-compatible | Which PayPal and card methods are enabled in the merchant’s country? What are the account’s commercial terms, settlement rules and renewal limitations? |
| Square for WooCommerce | Businesses combining online sales with Square’s in-person ecosystem | Online and point-of-sale ecosystem; catalog synchronization; WooCommerce’s subscriptions matrix lists it as subscription-compatible | Is Square available to the legal entity and country? Does synchronization match the store’s catalog and inventory process? Are every required recurring and wallet method supported? |
How to compare gateways without looking only at the headline rate
Compare the cost and operational effect of the payment mix you actually expect. A displayed card rate may exclude international-card, currency-conversion, dispute or recurring-payment charges. Build the comparison around these questions.
Merchant country and settlement currency
Availability is a hard prerequisite. A gateway that works for a company in one country may not onboard a legal entity in another, or may support different payment methods and settlement currencies. Confirm the merchant-country list and the currencies in which funds can be settled before spending time on configuration.
Customer payment methods
List the methods customers in your target markets use: cards, express wallets, bank transfers, local debit schemes and buy-now-pay-later products. A gateway with a low card rate can still reduce conversion if it lacks the wallet or local method your audience expects. Verify whether each method is available in the checkout location, the customer’s country and the currency of the order.
Total transaction and dispute cost
Calculate domestic cards, international cards, currency conversion and chargebacks separately. WooPayments publishes country-specific tables rather than one global price. For example, its 2026 fee page lists 1.50% + €0.25 for card payments in several European markets; that named figure is not a worldwide WooPayments rate and does not automatically include every possible surcharge. Use the table for the exact merchant location and payment type.
Recurring billing and saved payment methods
Subscriptions require more than a successful first payment. The gateway must be able to store or tokenize a payment method, authorize scheduled renewals, report failures and let WooCommerce update the subscription status. WooCommerce’s subscriptions matrix marks Stripe, PayPal Payments and Square as supporting subscriptions, but capabilities differ by gateway and by payment method. Check the exact renewal method you plan to sell, including wallet restrictions, failed-payment recovery and customer payment-method updates.
Checkout and processor control
On-site card fields can feel seamless, while a redirect or hosted step may place more of the payment-page responsibility with the processor. Express wallets can shorten checkout but require domain, button-placement and device testing. Dashboard depth also matters. WooPayments documentation says its merchants do not have access to the full Stripe dashboard; teams that need Stripe’s complete processor controls should compare the direct Stripe integration rather than assuming the two experiences are identical.
Plugin quality and maintenance
Check the extension’s compatibility notes, release activity, support path and handling of WooCommerce’s checkout blocks. Confirm that webhooks are secured and that refunds, partial refunds, authorization expiry and asynchronous payment methods map to the correct WooCommerce order statuses. A gateway with excellent commercial terms is a poor choice if its plugin creates reconciliation or renewal work your team cannot support.

WooPayments: the WooCommerce-native starting point
WooCommerce markets WooPayments as “the only payment method designed exclusively for WooCommerce, by Woo.” Its main advantage is a unified WooCommerce workflow: payment settings, transaction visibility and order operations are designed to be managed from the same ecosystem rather than through a separate processor relationship.
Choose it when deep WooCommerce integration and supported local methods matter more than having every processor-level control. Confirm that your legal entity and country are eligible, then read the country-specific fee table for domestic and international cards, currency conversion and disputes. The 1.50% + €0.25 example for card payments in several European markets is useful for a European estimate only; it must not be applied to another country without checking that country’s table.
WooPayments is not simply Stripe with a different label. Its dashboard access and operating workflow differ, and WooPayments states that merchants do not receive the full Stripe dashboard. If your finance or risk team depends on Stripe’s complete controls, reporting or processor configuration, compare the direct Stripe extension before committing.
Stripe for WooCommerce: a direct Stripe operating model
Stripe for WooCommerce suits stores that want to operate directly in Stripe’s processor environment, use its wallet ecosystem or align online payments with other Stripe-based systems. It is a separate integration choice from WooPayments: do not transfer assumptions about pricing, dashboard access, country coverage or subscription behavior from one to the other.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Before installation, confirm the official extension’s compatibility with your current WooCommerce version and checkout experience. Check the merchant-country list, settlement currencies and every payment method you intend to show. For subscriptions, verify tokenization, renewal authorization, failed-payment handling and whether each wallet or local method can be used for recurring charges. Stripe’s broad processor ecosystem does not mean every method has identical recurring-payment capabilities.
PayPal Payments: account checkout plus cards
PayPal Payments is a logical candidate when customers actively look for a PayPal account button or when the store wants PayPal alongside card processing. It can provide a familiar account-based checkout while still supporting card transactions through the configured PayPal product.
WooCommerce’s subscriptions matrix lists PayPal Payments as subscription-compatible. That designation is not a promise that every PayPal method, funding source, country or renewal scenario behaves identically. Confirm which methods are enabled for the merchant account, how billing agreements or saved methods are created, how failed renewals are retried, and how refunds and disputes appear in both WooCommerce and PayPal.

Square for WooCommerce: online and in-person operations
Square for WooCommerce is most compelling when the business already needs Square’s point-of-sale ecosystem or wants online and in-person activity connected to one catalog and operational workflow. Catalog synchronization can reduce duplicate product maintenance, but it also means the store must define which system controls names, prices, tax settings, stock and variations.
WooCommerce’s subscriptions matrix lists Square as subscription-compatible. Confirm the precise recurring-payment behavior for your products, including saved payment methods, renewal failures and customer updates. Also verify Square availability for the merchant’s legal entity and country, the currencies supported for online settlement and the payment methods that can be used in both channels.
Choose Square for an operational reason, not merely because catalog synchronization sounds convenient. If the business has no in-person requirement and does not need Square’s ecosystem, compare the plugin, reporting and payment costs with a gateway optimized for online-only operations.
Subscriptions: what to verify before promising recurring billing
A subscription checkout can succeed once and still fail at the first renewal. Treat recurring billing as a separate capability check.
- Confirm the gateway-method combination. Check the WooCommerce subscriptions compatibility matrix and the gateway’s current documentation for cards, wallets and local methods. The matrix identifies Stripe, PayPal Payments and Square as supporting subscriptions, but individual methods can have narrower rules.
- Check payment-method storage. Determine whether the gateway uses a reusable token, a billing agreement or another saved-payment mechanism, and where customers can update an expired card.
- Review renewal authorization. Verify whether renewals are merchant-initiated, require customer action or can be interrupted by a wallet’s rules.
- Map failures and retries. Define what happens when a renewal is declined, a card expires or a webhook arrives late. The subscription should not remain active merely because the original order was paid.
- Test refunds and cancellations. Run a full and partial refund, cancel before renewal, change the billing interval if your product allows it, and confirm that WooCommerce and the processor show the same state.
Country availability and local-method checks
Country support should be the first filter, not a final implementation detail. The merchant’s incorporation country, business verification, bank account, settlement currency and customer geography can all affect eligibility. A gateway can be available to merchants in a region while withholding a particular wallet or local bank method there.
- Confirm the legal entity and merchant country are accepted.
- Confirm the bank account and settlement currencies you need.
- List each local method, wallet and card type required by your customers.
- Check whether international cards, currency conversion and disputes carry additional charges.
- Verify payout timing and any reserve, verification or transaction limits stated for the account.
Do not launch based on a rate quoted for another country. WooPayments’ published tables illustrate why: the 2026 card example of 1.50% + €0.25 applies to several named European markets, not automatically to every market or payment type. Use the same discipline for Stripe, PayPal Payments and Square: obtain terms for the actual merchant account.

A practical cost model for your store
Create a monthly scenario instead of comparing one percentage. Separate transaction categories in a spreadsheet or finance system:
| Cost line | Input to estimate | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic card transactions | Monthly volume and average order value in the merchant’s main market | Usually the largest baseline category, but rates and fixed fees vary by country |
| International cards | Share of orders from cards issued abroad | May add an international surcharge |
| Currency conversion | Orders paid in currencies different from the settlement currency | Conversion charges can outweigh a small headline-rate difference |
| Disputes | Expected dispute count and the processor’s dispute fee | A low transaction rate can be offset by expensive or frequent disputes |
| Subscriptions | Recurring volume, renewal failures and payment-method mix | Wallet and tokenization rules affect both revenue retention and support work |
| Operational cost | Plugin maintenance, reconciliation time and support effort | Two gateways can have similar rates but very different staff workload |
Use conservative assumptions for international orders and disputes, then compare the total rather than selecting the lowest domestic-card percentage. Include the cost of a second gateway only if its extra coverage or resilience justifies another plugin, another webhook configuration and additional reconciliation.
Implementation checklist before going live
- Confirm eligibility. Verify merchant-country, legal-entity, bank-account and settlement-currency support with the chosen gateway.
- Document the payment mix. Record expected domestic and international card volume, currencies, wallets, local methods, disputes and subscription sales.
- Install the current official extension. Check compatibility with the current WooCommerce, WordPress, PHP and checkout-block stack, and review the extension’s support and release notes.
- Configure webhooks and credentials. Use the gateway’s documented connection process, least-privilege access where offered, and a clearly separated test account or test mode.
- Build checkout scenarios. Test a successful card payment, a declined payment, an express-wallet payment, an asynchronous method if used, a refund and a partial refund.
- Test subscriptions separately. Create a test subscription, run a renewal, force a failed renewal, update the payment method, cancel before renewal and verify every order and subscription status.
- Reconcile payouts. Match processor transactions, fees, refunds and chargebacks to WooCommerce orders. Confirm that payout dates and settlement currencies are understood by accounting.
- Run a controlled launch. Keep test mode until every required path works, then monitor the first live orders, webhooks, refunds and payout reports closely.
These are required validation steps, not claims that the gateways have been tested here. Your staging results should decide whether a selected extension is ready for production.
Common failure modes and fixes
The gateway is unavailable during setup
Recheck the merchant-country and legal-entity requirements first. A plugin can be installed globally while the processor cannot onboard your business. If the country is supported, review verification status, bank details and settlement-currency configuration.
The payment succeeds but the order remains pending
Inspect webhook delivery, endpoint credentials and firewall or caching rules. Confirm that the gateway’s event reached WooCommerce and that the order-status mapping is enabled. Never mark orders paid manually until the processor dashboard confirms the transaction.
Wallet buttons do not appear
Check device and browser eligibility, domain verification, currency and country rules, button placement and whether the wallet is enabled in the processor account. A wallet may be available for one payment flow but unavailable for subscriptions.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Subscription renewals fail while initial payments work
Compare the renewal method with the gateway’s subscription rules. Check whether the payment method can be stored, whether the token is valid, whether customer authentication is required again and whether failed-renewal retries are configured. Review the subscription and processor event logs together.

Refund totals do not reconcile
Match the WooCommerce refund record to the processor transaction ID and settlement report. Account for partial refunds, retained processing fees, currency conversion and dispute adjustments rather than comparing only the order total.
Should you run a second gateway?
A second gateway can cover a country, wallet or payment method missing from the primary option, or provide resilience if one processor has an outage. It also adds another plugin, webhook set, dashboard, payout schedule and reconciliation process. Add one only when the incremental coverage or business continuity has a measurable value.
If you do add a second gateway, define routing rules before launch: which countries or methods use it, how refunds are handled, where subscription renewals remain attached, and how accounting distinguishes the two payout streams. Avoid enabling duplicate methods that create confusing checkout choices without improving approval or conversion.
Choosing by store profile
WooCommerce-first store with straightforward online payments
Evaluate WooPayments first, then compare its country-specific total cost and supported methods with direct Stripe. The deciding factor is usually the balance between native workflow and the processor controls your team needs.
International store with varied wallets and currencies
Start with country and method availability, not brand preference. Build a country-by-country matrix for settlement currencies, local methods, conversion charges and dispute handling. A single gateway may not provide the same coverage in every market.
Subscription business
Shortlist gateways that support your exact recurring method, then test renewals and failure recovery in staging. Stripe, PayPal Payments and Square are identified as subscription-compatible in WooCommerce’s matrix, but the method-level details still determine whether a particular subscription product works.
Retailer with physical locations
Square deserves evaluation when online and in-person operations, catalog synchronization and shared workflows are central requirements. Validate inventory ownership and recurring-payment behavior before enabling synchronization.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Store whose customers expect PayPal
Evaluate PayPal Payments alongside a card-focused option. Confirm the account’s country rules, enabled funding sources, settlement terms and subscription behavior instead of assuming every customer payment path is interchangeable.
Verdict
WooPayments is the natural first evaluation for a WooCommerce-native workflow, especially when its supported methods and country-specific pricing fit your business. Choose direct Stripe when processor-level controls and a direct Stripe operating model matter more. Choose PayPal Payments when PayPal account checkout is important to your audience, and Square when online sales need to work with a Square in-person operation. In every case, make the final decision from the merchant-country rules, full payment mix, subscription tests, dispute exposure and reconciliation workload—not from a single advertised rate.
