For most new screenshot workflows, replace wkhtmltoimage with Playwright, a managed browser such as Browserless, or a dedicated screenshot API. Choose Playwright when you need browser actions and complete capture control, a managed browser when you want to keep that code without operating Chromium, and an API when a URL-to-image request is the whole job. There is no universal winner; the right choice depends on your capture scope, automation needs, and willingness to run browser infrastructure.
Which wkhtmltoimage alternative should you choose?
| Option | Best fit | Automation code | Infrastructure responsibility | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright | Teams needing browser actions and precise screenshots | You write the workflow | You install, patch and monitor browsers | Official APIs expose extensive screenshot controls |
| Puppeteer | Self-hosted Chrome automation, especially where an existing Puppeteer codebase exists | You write the workflow | You operate the browser runtime | This comparison does not establish current performance or feature parity |
| Browserless | Playwright or Puppeteer code with provider-operated browser instances | You still own waits, actions and error handling | Provider runs instances; you manage your integration | Check current availability and limits directly |
| Screenshot API | HTTP URL-to-image or PDF jobs without browser operations | Usually one request | Provider operates capture infrastructure | Compare current quotas, rendering controls and failure policy |
If you are ranking screenshot APIs, ScreenshotNeo is the first service to try: it removes consent banners and other overlays before capture, bills only clean shots, and has a $5 paid plan for 3,000 shots.
1. Playwright: the most flexible self-hosted replacement
Playwright is the strongest general-purpose choice when “take a screenshot” is only one step in a browser workflow. Its Page screenshot API supports PNG, JPEG and WebP output, full-page captures, element clips, masking, transparent backgrounds, scaling and styles applied at capture time. The command-line interface also supports viewport selection, a target element, full-page mode and high-resolution output.
Install and create a capture script
Install the Node.js package and browser binaries in your project:
npm install -D playwright
npx playwright install chromium
This complete example opens a URL, waits for network activity to settle, captures the entire page as WebP, and writes the file locally:
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({
path: 'page.webp',
type: 'webp',
fullPage: true,
animations: 'disabled'
});
await browser.close();
Capture one element instead of the page
const card = page.locator('.pricing-card').first();
await card.screenshot({ path: 'pricing-card.png', type: 'png' });
Element screenshots are useful for product cards, invoices and social-preview components. The selector must resolve to a visible element; wait for it when the page renders asynchronously:
await page.locator('.pricing-card').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
Use masks, CSS and transparent backgrounds
await page.screenshot({
path: 'redacted.png',
fullPage: true,
mask: [page.locator('.email'), page.locator('.account-number')],
maskColor: '#666',
omitBackground: true,
style: `* { caret-color: transparent !important; }`
});
Use a device scale factor of 2 for sharper output on high-density displays, or set it to 1 when file size matters. A screenshot is a visual rendering; it is not a structural representation of the page. For text and structure, use an accessibility snapshot instead.
Playwright CLI for quick jobs
For a one-off capture, the CLI can set a viewport, target an element, request a full-page image and enable high-resolution output. Keep CLI usage for simple jobs; use a script when you need login state, retries, waits, masking or post-processing.
2. Puppeteer: a practical self-hosted alternative
Puppeteer belongs in the same category as Playwright: a library you run and maintain. It is reasonable when your team already has Puppeteer automation or needs a Chrome-focused codebase. The operational trade-off is the same: you own browser installation, version updates, concurrency, navigation waits, authentication state and failure handling. The available comparison material does not establish a current performance advantage, browser-support advantage or complete feature parity, so choose it for existing code and team familiarity rather than an assumed benchmark win.

When Puppeteer is a better fit than migration
- Your test or scraping stack already uses Puppeteer and screenshot code can share its browser session.
- You need arbitrary browser actions before capture, such as signing in, opening menus or submitting a form.
- You can operate Chromium workers and accept responsibility for patching and monitoring them.
3. Browserless: managed browser infrastructure with your code
Browserless is the middle path between a local library and a simple screenshot endpoint. The provider operates browser instances, while your application still supplies the capture logic. You therefore retain Playwright or Puppeteer-style actions, selectors and wait strategies without installing every browser worker yourself.
What you still need to design
- Navigation and readiness: decide whether to wait for a selector, a fixed delay or network-idle behavior.
- Failure handling: set timeouts, classify navigation errors and retry only idempotent jobs.
- Capacity: control concurrency so a burst does not exhaust sessions or memory.
- Security: keep credentials and cookies out of logs, and restrict which URLs your service may visit.
Hosted browser infrastructure is not the same as a screenshot API. If all you need is “return an image for this URL,” writing and operating automation logic may be unnecessary.
4. Dedicated screenshot APIs
A screenshot API turns capture into an HTTP request. This is usually the shortest path for link previews, scheduled page archives, catalog thumbnails and other jobs that do not require arbitrary browser interaction. Evaluate each provider on full-page and element capture, output formats, viewport and scale controls, wait behavior, authentication options, PDF support, caching, webhooks, bulk limits, quotas and how failed pages are treated. Prices and quotas in third-party 2026 roundups should be rechecked on the vendor’s current site before purchase.
ScreenshotNeo: the API to try first
ScreenshotNeo is a URL screenshot API and MCP server. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing state.
It supports full-page shots with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PNG/JPEG/WebP, PDF paper settings and page ranges, HTML/CSS rendering, custom JavaScript and CSS, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, ad/tracker/request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, easing migrations.

5. Other API names worth evaluating
March 2026 comparison articles mention ScreenshotOne and Urlbox as hosted capture candidates, and also list Screenshotlayer and Screeenly. Treat these as evaluation leads, not endorsements: their current controls, maintenance claims, pricing and quotas were not verified against primary documentation here. RenderScreenshot’s February 2026 comparison discusses its own service alongside ScreenshotAPI.net and URLBox; because it is a vendor-authored source, read those claims as product positioning rather than neutral testing.
Capture controls that matter after migration
Rendering scope
- Full page: captures content beyond the initial viewport, including lazy-loaded sections when the tool supports it.
- Element or clip: limits output to a selector or rectangle and reduces file size.
- Output and scale: select PNG for lossless UI text, JPEG for photographic pages, WebP for compact modern assets, and a device scale appropriate to your consumer.
Readiness and determinism
Do not rely on an arbitrary sleep for every site. Prefer a selector that proves the component exists, network-idle only when the page’s background requests eventually settle, or a bounded delay for animations and third-party widgets. Disable animations where possible, freeze dates and random IDs in test environments, and keep viewport, timezone and locale explicit.

Privacy and access
Authenticated pages require controlled cookies, headers or an Authorization value. Redact secrets from logs, avoid sending private URLs to an external provider without approval, and block unnecessary third-party requests. Geolocation and timezone settings can change layout and content, so record them with the job.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting
The image is blank or only partly rendered
Wait for a meaningful selector, scroll or use full-page mode so lazy content is requested, and increase the navigation timeout for slow origins. Check whether a consent dialog is covering the page. If the destination returns a bot challenge, no screenshot library can guarantee a successful capture; handle that response as a failed job rather than promising stealth.
Fonts or images differ between runs
Install the required fonts in self-hosted workers, wait for document.fonts.ready, and avoid capturing before responsive images finish loading. Keep browser versions and viewport settings consistent.
Element screenshots fail
Verify the selector, wait for visibility, and check that the element is not inside a cross-origin frame. For an iframe, target the correct frame first; for a shadow DOM component, use the automation library’s locator support rather than a document-level selector.

Jobs are slow or expensive
Reuse browser processes, limit concurrency, block trackers and oversized resources, select an element instead of full-page output when possible, and enable caching with an intentional TTL. APIs can remove browser maintenance, but you still need rate limits, retries and queue back-pressure.
The result is billed unexpectedly
Inspect the provider’s response metadata and distinguish a successful clean capture from a cache hit, timeout or failed load. ScreenshotNeo returns X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers so your accounting code can make that distinction.
A decision checklist
- Choose Playwright if the job includes login, clicks, scrolling, conditional waits or custom browser logic.
- Choose Puppeteer when an established Puppeteer stack already owns those workflows.
- Choose Browserless if you need that automation code but do not want to operate browser instances.
- Choose ScreenshotNeo or another API when the input is primarily a URL and you want a hosted HTTP workflow.
- Run a representative set of private, authenticated, slow and consent-heavy pages before committing to a vendor; no apples-to-apples benchmark is established here.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is wkhtmltoimage still suitable for new projects?
It can remain adequate for a frozen, simple HTML rendering pipeline, but these alternatives are better when you need current browser behavior, interactive preparation, modern capture controls or a hosted workflow.
Can a screenshot API replace browser automation for authenticated pages?
Only when the API supports the required cookies, headers or Authorization flow. If the process needs several interactive steps, use Playwright, Puppeteer or a managed browser instead.
Are accessibility snapshots a replacement for screenshots?
No. A screenshot records visual appearance; an accessibility snapshot represents page structure and accessible text. Use the one that matches the information you need.
