Short answer: Choose the MEATER Pro XL if you cook several proteins and want a polished, wire-free app experience; choose ThermoWorks Signals if you want up to four conventional meat-and-pit channels; choose ThermoWorks RFX MEAT when a thick steel smoker or cast-iron vessel repeatedly blocks wireless signals; and choose the Combustion Inc. Predictive Thermometer if dense sensing, predictive estimates and very long battery life matter most.
The smoker’s walls, the route through your house and the position of the gateway matter more than a headline range figure. A reliable setup puts the receiver or gateway outside the metal cooker, verifies the connection from the exact place where you will sit, and starts the cook with every probe charged.

What makes a wireless thermometer work across a yard?
Remote barbecue monitoring is a radio-link problem before it is a temperature problem. The probe measures the food, but another device must carry that reading through the cooker, across the yard and, often, through one or more walls to your phone. A system that works perfectly beside an open kettle grill can lose contact when the same probe is enclosed by a steel offset smoker.
ThermoWorks author Martin Earl described the three common approaches in an explainer published May 20, 2025: “Our thermometers communicate using one of three technologies: Radio Frequency (RF), BlueTooth® Wireless Technology, or Wi-Fi.” Each architecture has a different failure point.

Wi-Fi
A Wi-Fi thermometer or gateway joins your home network and can then make readings available remotely through an app. This is useful when you want to check a cook from inside the house or farther away, but the gateway still has to maintain a short-range link with the probes. If the gateway is behind the smoker, inside a metal cabinet or at the edge of your home’s coverage, internet access will not rescue the probe connection.
Bluetooth Long Range
Bluetooth Long Range can cover substantially more distance than ordinary phone-to-probe Bluetooth, especially when it uses a coded PHY mode. It is still a local link, however. The phone may need to remain near a charging dock or gateway, and walls, steel lids and poor dock placement can reduce the practical range. The MEATER Pro XL uses Bluetooth 5.2 Coded PHY Long Range between its probes and charger; the charger is the device that can extend monitoring to the equivalent of a home Wi-Fi range.
Dedicated RF
RF systems use a purpose-built receiver rather than relying on your phone’s Bluetooth radio. ThermoWorks says its long-range Smoke X RF models use the 915 MHz band, while most consumer wireless devices use 2.4 GHz. That difference helps explain why a dedicated receiver can behave differently around a cooker and walls, although no frequency guarantees a connection through every building or smoker.
For a yard cook, think in terms of the complete path: probe to gateway or receiver, gateway to home network if applicable, and gateway or receiver to you. A manufacturer’s maximum distance is normally an open-air potential, not a promise through steel, brick and furniture.

MEATER Pro XL: best premium choice for several proteins
The Pro XL is the most straightforward recommendation when your priority is monitoring several briskets, racks of ribs or poultry pieces without probe wires running out of the cooker. Its four probes each contain four internal temperature sensors plus one ambient sensor. MEATER’s 2025 support documentation rates internal monitoring to 105°C/221°F and ambient monitoring to 550°C/1000°F, giving the probe enough headroom for low-and-slow cooking and very hot ambient conditions.
The probes communicate with the charger using Bluetooth 5.2 Coded PHY Long Range. The charger is therefore part of the range solution, not merely a storage box: MEATER says it can reach the equivalent of a home Wi-Fi range. Put it on the side of the cooker nearest the house, with as little steel between the charger and the probes as possible. Your phone then communicates with the charger rather than trying to maintain a direct Bluetooth connection through the smoker.

MEATER’s current product specification lists ±0.5°F internal accuracy and says 30 minutes of USB-C charging provides 24 hours of probe battery life. Treat that as a charging routine you must plan, not as a reason to start a cook with partially charged probes. A four-probe cook can require all four probes at once, so check each one in the dock before loading meat.
Where Pro XL fits best
- Four simultaneous proteins need independent readings.
- You prefer app-based monitoring and a clean, wire-free installation.
- The charger can sit outside the cooker with a clear route toward the house.
- You value a high ambient-temperature rating for searing or high-heat finishing.
Important caveat
Tom’s Guide’s review dated November 25, 2025, found the Pro XL accurate and easy to use for multiple proteins, but reported that the probes needed charging before use and that Bluetooth setup did not work reliably during its testing. Those are observations from one review, not a universal failure rate. They do mean you should pair and test the system before the barbecue is underway rather than discovering a setup problem after the lid is closed.
ThermoWorks Signals: best conventional four-channel pit-and-meat system
Signals is aimed at cooks who want a dedicated channel for the pit alongside several meat readings. ThermoWorks specifies up to four channels, so you can monitor multiple pieces of meat, the cooker temperature, or a combination of both. Its layout is closer to a traditional alarm thermometer than to a probe-only ecosystem, which can be preferable when you want an at-a-glance device near the cooker as well as remote access.
Signals uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The unit is a gateway-and-probe system: the probes must reach the Signals device, and the device must have a usable path to your home network for remote monitoring. Place it where it can hear the probes reliably and still receive Wi-Fi from the house. A gateway hidden behind the smoker or placed on the far side of a metal cabinet creates avoidable signal loss.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →ThermoWorks lists IP66 splash resistance, strong magnets, a stable base and professional high-temperature probes. Its built-in battery is rated for up to 16 hours of wireless use. That is enough for many daytime cooks, but an overnight brisket may require a charging plan or a nearby power source. The 16-hour figure is a maximum published wireless-use rating, not a guarantee for every combination of refresh rate, network conditions and alarm activity.
Choose Signals when
- You want up to four channels that can include a dedicated pit reading.
- You prefer conventional alarm behavior and a physical unit at the cooker.
- Your smoker is close enough to the house for dependable Wi-Fi and you can place the gateway outside the enclosure.
- Splash resistance and a stable, magnet-mounted housing matter in an outdoor cooking area.
Signals is less attractive if your cooker routinely blocks the probe-to-gateway path or if you do not have reliable Wi-Fi where the gateway will sit. In that situation, the RFX system’s enclosure-focused design deserves priority.
ThermoWorks RFX MEAT: best for steel smokers and other difficult enclosures
RFX MEAT is the specialist option for the physical environment that defeats ordinary wireless probes. ThermoWorks says it is engineered to maintain signal through thick steel smokers, cast-iron Dutch ovens and heavy commercial ovens. That positioning addresses the most frustrating remote-monitoring failure: a system that has ample distance in open air but drops out as soon as the lid closes.

The RFX Gateway also accepts a Pro-Series Air Probe for direct ambient-pit measurement. That lets you measure the cooking environment at grate level instead of inferring pit temperature from a meat probe’s ambient sensor. Place the air probe where the food actually cooks, away from a direct flame or a cold edge near the door.

RFX is not simply a probe with a larger phone range. The gateway is the bridge that should be placed outside the smoker and in a location with a clear route toward the receiver or network. If you put the gateway inside a steel cabinet because it is convenient, you undermine the design goal. Test the system with the cooker closed and the gateway in its final position.
Who should buy it
- Owners of thick-wall steel offsets, commercial ovens or cast-iron cooking vessels.
- Cooks who have already experienced Bluetooth dropouts when the lid is closed.
- Pitmasters who want a dedicated air probe at grate level.
- Installations where signal continuity matters more than a minimalist, wire-free appearance.
ThermoWorks’ product description emphasizes enclosure performance, but the available specification extract does not provide a complete battery or kit-content list. Confirm the current package and power requirements before ordering, especially if you need a particular air probe or a receiver arrangement.
Combustion Inc. Predictive Thermometer: best for sensor density and endurance
Combustion’s second-generation Predictive Thermometer takes a different approach from a conventional single-point probe. Its current product page lists eight sensors for “Total Temperature Awareness,” allowing the device to see temperature gradients along the probe rather than relying on one measurement point. The system also provides predictive cooking estimates, which can help when carryover cooking and the changing temperature profile of a large roast make a simple target alarm less informative.
The thermometer supports BLE 5.4 Long Range PHY Coded. Combustion lists over 1,000 ft (300 m) of potential signal before Wi-Fi, but that number should be treated as an open-path capability. A steel smoker, brick wall, foil insulation or a gateway placed behind the cooker can reduce the usable distance dramatically.
Battery endurance is a major advantage for long barbecue sessions. Combustion lists more than 90 hours in cook mode at a five-second refresh rate. It also lists IP69K/IP68 water resistance, a useful combination for an outdoor device exposed to splashes and cleaning. The five-second refresh condition belongs with the battery figure: changing the reporting behavior or using a different operating mode can alter endurance.
Choose Combustion when
- You want sensor-rich readings and predictive estimates rather than only a single target alarm.
- An overnight or multi-day cooking schedule makes frequent charging inconvenient.
- The thermometer may encounter heavy splashing or demanding washdown conditions.
- You can position the receiving device so the long-range coded Bluetooth path is not blocked by the cooker.
Its advertised range is impressive, but it is not a substitute for a placement test. The probe, receiving device and any Wi-Fi bridge still need a reliable path in your actual yard.

How to choose by cooker, distance and workload
One smoker, a short open-air route and several meats
Start with the MEATER Pro XL if four independent probes and a clean app experience are the main goals. Its four-probe capacity and high ambient rating suit a mixed cook, provided the charger can sit outside the cooker and remain within a dependable route to the house.
Several meats plus a pit-temperature channel
Signals is the natural fit when you want up to four channels and expect one of them to be the pit. Its conventional alarm-thermometer layout makes the cooker-side status easy to read, while Wi-Fi provides remote access when the gateway has adequate coverage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThick steel, cast iron or commercial equipment
Put RFX MEAT first on the shortlist. Its stated purpose is signal continuity through the kinds of enclosures that commonly defeat ordinary Bluetooth links. Use the gateway outside the enclosure and add the compatible air probe if grate-level pit measurement is important.
Long unattended cooks and predictive estimates
Combustion is the strongest match when 90-plus hours of cook-mode battery life, eight sensors and predictive estimates are more valuable than a conventional four-channel layout. Verify that the receiving device can be placed where the coded Bluetooth signal remains strong.
Several walls between the smoker and your usual seat
Do not select on distance alone. A system with a gateway near the cooker and a Wi-Fi path to the house may outperform a higher advertised open-air range. Map the actual route, including the smoker lid, exterior wall and the room where you expect to check the cook.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Setup checklist for reliable monitoring across the yard
- Charge every probe and gateway. Put rechargeable probes in their dock or charger before the cook. For the Pro XL, MEATER’s specification says 30 minutes of USB-C charging provides 24 hours of probe battery life; Signals is rated for up to 16 hours of wireless use; Combustion lists more than 90 hours in cook mode at a five-second refresh.
- Pair while everything is cool and accessible. Complete the app or receiver setup before inserting probes or closing the smoker. This is the point to identify a pairing problem, not when the meat is already cooking.
- Place the gateway or receiver outside the metal enclosure. Set it on the side of the cooker nearest the house, with a clear path around the lid and walls. Do not hide it inside a steel cabinet or behind the cooker.
- Test the route from your real monitoring position. Walk to the room, patio chair or far side of the yard where you will actually check the cook. Confirm that readings update and that alarms can be heard or seen there. A test beside the smoker does not validate a cross-yard installation.
- Position meat probes correctly. Put the sensing portion in the thickest part of the food, away from bone and large pockets of fat. If a probe includes an ambient sensor, make sure that portion is not touching the meat or the cooking grate.
- Install a pit probe at grate level when the system supports one. Signals can use a channel for pit temperature, and the RFX Gateway accepts a Pro-Series Air Probe. Position the air probe near the food’s cooking zone rather than at the lid or directly over a hot fire.
- Set independent alarms. Give each protein its own target and keep a separate pit-temperature alarm. A single alarm can hide the fact that one piece is progressing much faster than another.
- Close the cooker and repeat the test. Steel, cast iron and the closed lid change the radio environment. Verify updates again after the lid is shut and before you leave the yard.
What to do when the signal drops
The probe works with the lid open but fails when closed
Move the gateway or charger to the nearest outside wall of the cooker and remove metal objects between it and the probe. For a persistent problem with a thick steel or cast-iron cooker, move to an enclosure-focused system such as RFX MEAT rather than repeatedly repositioning a phone.

The app works beside the smoker but not inside the house
Separate the links. First confirm that the probe still reaches its gateway; then check the gateway’s Wi-Fi position and home-network coverage. A phone cannot compensate for a gateway that is at the edge of Wi-Fi range or a network dead spot.

Readings disappear only at the far side of the yard
Return to the last location with a stable update and identify which object blocks the path: the cooker, a wall, a vehicle or a large appliance. Relocate the receiving device rather than assuming the advertised maximum distance applies through those obstacles.
The system loses power during an overnight cook
Use the published endurance figure as a planning ceiling, not a guarantee. Charge all probes before loading the cooker, confirm the gateway’s battery state, and arrange power where the product allows it. Combustion’s 90-plus-hour figure is tied to cook mode and a five-second refresh; Signals’ rating is up to 16 hours of wireless use; the Pro XL’s 24-hour figure follows a 30-minute charge claim.
Bluetooth pairing is unreliable
Reset the setup before the cook: charge the probes, keep the phone and charger close together, complete pairing with the smoker open, then move the charger to its final position and retest. Tom’s Guide reported unreliable Bluetooth setup during its November 25, 2025 Pro XL review, so a pre-cook verification is particularly important for that model.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Temperature, durability and monitoring trade-offs
Temperature envelope
MEATER provides the clearest published limits in this group: 221°F for internal monitoring and 1000°F for ambient monitoring. That distinction matters because the temperature around a probe can be far higher than the target internal temperature of the meat. Do not confuse an ambient rating with a safe internal target for food; they describe what the sensor is rated to monitor.
Sensor design
Conventional probes are easy to understand: set a target and wait for the alarm. MEATER adds multiple internal and ambient sensors in each probe, while Combustion uses eight sensors and predictive estimates to show temperature gradients and forecast progress. Those features can help with large roasts and carryover, but they do not remove the need to place the probe in the thickest part of the food.
Outdoor exposure
Signals lists IP66 splash resistance. Combustion lists IP69K/IP68 water resistance. Those ratings describe resistance to specified water and dust conditions; they do not make careless placement or cleaning practices harmless. Keep gateways and chargers where rain, grease and direct heat are controlled, and follow the current product’s cleaning instructions.
Power routine
Rechargeable probes reduce disposable-battery handling but add a pre-cook task. The Pro XL requires its probes to be charged in the dock, Signals has a built-in battery rated up to 16 hours, and Combustion emphasizes more than 90 hours under a stated refresh condition. For long cooks, endurance and charging access can matter more than a small difference in advertised range.
Bottom line: match the radio system to the smoker
For a premium four-protein cook, MEATER Pro XL offers the most complete wire-free package: four probes, multi-sensor measurement, a 221°F internal and 1000°F ambient envelope, and a charger designed to extend the link toward home Wi-Fi range. Signals is the better conventional pitmaster tool when four channels and a dedicated pit reading matter. RFX MEAT is the targeted answer for thick steel and cast-iron enclosures. Combustion stands out for eight-sensor coverage, predictive estimates, very long cook-mode endurance and rugged water resistance.
Whichever system you choose, reliability comes from installation: charge before cooking, place the gateway or receiver outside the metal enclosure, test the closed-lid route from your actual monitoring location, and keep the pit probe near grate level. Those steps determine whether “across the yard” is a useful promise or merely an open-air range number.
