The best wireless headphones depend on what you value most. Sony’s WH-1000XM6 is the strongest all-rounder in current expert coverage, Bose’s QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) is the noise-cancellation specialist, and Apple’s AirPods Max 2 makes the most sense when your daily devices are Apple products. Those are guide judgments from current reviewers, not results from a common independent laboratory test.

Use the comparison below to match noise cancellation, sound, comfort, battery, codecs, switching, ecosystem features, and price to your actual routine. Prices, rankings, and product generations change, so confirm the listing and return terms before paying.

Best wireless headphones at a glance

There is no universal winner. A frequent flyer may reasonably choose a different pair from someone who works beside a busy road, listens mainly at home, or uses an iPhone, Mac, and iPad all day.

Which wireless headphones should I buy?

Choose Sony for the broadest balance

Pick the WH-1000XM6 if you want one premium Bluetooth headset to cover planes, trains, offices and relaxed music listening. Current expert coverage treats it as a premium all-rounder. Sony’s own specifications give it a 30-hour noise-cancelling rating, a 40-hour rating with cancellation disabled, Bluetooth 5.3, and four listed codecs. Its published U.S. price was $459.99 when accessed in 2026, but that is a dated listing rather than a guaranteed street price.

Choose Bose when quiet matters more than everything else

What Hi-Fi? identifies the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) as its noise-cancellation leader among the products discussed. The same coverage says Sony has closed the gap and has advantages in sound, so treat the distinction as that publication’s evaluation rather than a universal measurement. If the main problem is engine rumble, HVAC noise or a loud commute, Bose is the logical first candidate to audition, provided the fit feels stable and comfortable.

Choose AirPods Max 2 for Apple-centric convenience

AirPods Max 2 is aimed at readers who value integration with Apple hardware. What Hi-Fi?’s current 2026 guide lists 20 hours of battery life and a 386.2 g weight, both meaningful trade-offs against lighter or longer-lasting alternatives. The ecosystem benefit is most persuasive when your phone, tablet and computer are all Apple devices; it is less compelling if you regularly switch to non-Apple hardware. Confirm the current product generation, regional availability and price before ordering.

How to evaluate a pair before buying

1. Start with the noise you actually need to remove

Active noise cancellation (ANC) uses microphones and signal processing to reduce outside sound. Low, steady noise such as aircraft engines is a different challenge from voices, keyboard clicks and intermittent traffic. A manufacturer’s processor or microphone count can describe the design, but it is not an independent score. Sony says its WH-1000XM6 uses the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3 and an adaptive microphone system; Sony also says the processor is seven times faster than its predecessor and fine-tunes 12 microphones. Those are Sony’s stated specifications, not a laboratory comparison.

For travel, prioritize a secure seal around your ears and the ability to maintain cancellation without pressure or discomfort. For an office, a transparency or awareness mode may matter as much as maximum reduction because you need to hear colleagues and announcements. Current What Hi-Fi? coverage places Bose first for cancellation among these options and says Sony is close; use that as a starting point, then consider your own fit.

  • LONG BATTERY LIFE: With up to 50-hour battery life and quick charging, you’ll have enough power for multi-day road trips and long festival weekends.(USB Type-C Cable included)
  • HIGH QUALITY SOUND: Great sound quality customizable to your music preference with EQ Custom on the Sony | Headphones Connect App.
  • LIGHT & COMFORTABLE: The lightweight build and swivel earcups gently slip on and off, while the adjustable headband, cushion and soft ear pads give you all-day comfort.
  • CRYSTAL CLEAR CALLS: A built-in microphone provides you with hands-free calling. No need to even take your phone from your pocket.
  • MULTIPOINT CONNECTION: Quickly switch between two devices at once.

2. Decide what “good sound” means to you

Sound preference is subjective. Some listeners want a powerful bass lift for electronic music; others prefer a flatter, more revealing balance for acoustic recordings or podcasts. The available expert coverage gives Sony a sound advantage over Bose in its reviewers’ view, but that is not a universal ranking. Listen with familiar tracks at a safe volume when a retailer allows returns, and check whether the manufacturer’s app offers equalization if your preferred balance differs from the default.

3. Treat fit and weight as hard requirements

Headphones that cause a hot spot on your crown, squeeze your glasses or make your ears touch the driver will be unpleasant long before the battery is empty. Compare clamp pressure, headband padding, ear-cup depth and adjustability, not just the number on a scale. The available evidence gives AirPods Max 2 a 386.2 g weight, but does not establish weights for the Sony or Bose models, so do not infer which will feel lighter from the product names.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try wearing a prospective pair for at least 20 to 30 minutes if a return window permits. Move your head, wear your usual glasses and test the fit while walking. A stable seal improves both bass response and ANC consistency; repeated readjustment is a warning sign.

4. Read battery figures with their conditions attached

Battery ratings are not interchangeable. Sony specifies up to 30 hours with ANC on and up to 40 hours with ANC off. The “up to” wording means actual time varies with volume, codec, calls, temperature and other functions. AirPods Max 2 is listed at 20 hours by What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 guide. No comparable battery figure for Bose was established here.

Ask whether your normal day includes ANC, voice calls, high volume or frequent transparency-mode use. A model that lasts 20 hours may cover several commutes, while a traveler on a long itinerary may value every extra hour and a fast-charge feature. Check the current manufacturer specification for charging time and emergency wired operation before purchase; those details are not established for all three candidates in the available evidence.

Sony WH-CH520 Wireless On-Ear Bluetooth Headphones with Mic, Cappuccino | Comfortable Lightweight Design, Up to 50 Hrs Battery with Quick Charging, Multipoint Connection, Clear Calls, Swivel design
  • LONG BATTERY LIFE: With up to 50-hour battery life and quick charging, you’ll have enough power for multi-day road trips and long festival weekends. (USB Type-C Cable included)
  • HIGH QUALITY SOUND: Great sound quality customizable to your music preference with EQ Custom on the Sony | Headphones Connect App.

  • CRYSTAL CLEAR CALLS: A built-in microphone provides you with hands-free calling. No need to even take your phone from your pocket.
  • MULTIPOINT CONNECTION: Quickly switch between two devices at once.

5. Check Bluetooth codecs against your devices

Sony lists Bluetooth 5.3 with SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 support. Your phone and computer must also support a codec for it to be used, and the connection may fall back to a common option. A longer codec list is therefore not automatically better. The supplied evidence does not list codecs for Bose or AirPods Max 2, so consult their current technical pages if codec choice is important to you.

6. Confirm switching, wired use and ecosystem behavior

Multipoint lets headphones maintain connections to two devices, but implementation differs by model and software version. Automatic handoff inside one ecosystem can be more convenient than generic multipoint when it works reliably. Before buying, verify whether your priority is two-device Bluetooth multipoint, Apple’s device handoff, a USB audio mode, or a 3.5 mm cable. Those capabilities and their included accessories were not established consistently for these products in the available evidence.

7. Calculate the complete cost, not only the headline price

Sony’s U.S. page displayed $459.99 for the WH-1000XM6/S when accessed in 2026. That number is region-specific, date-specific and subject to change; it is not a permanent MSRP or a promise of current availability. Prices for Bose and AirPods Max 2 are not stated here. Add any required cable, replacement ear pads, extended warranty, taxes and shipping, then read the retailer’s return period and restocking rules. None of those terms should be assumed from the brand name.

Sony WH-1000XM6: specifications and trade-offs

Sony announced the WH-1000XM6 on May 16, 2025. Its release calls it “wireless noise cancelling headphones” and introduces the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3 with an adaptive microphone system. Sony says the processor runs seven times faster than its predecessor and that the system fine-tunes 12 microphones. Keep the attribution: these are maker claims about the design, not independent performance measurements.

Sony’s current support specifications list up to 30 hours of operation with noise cancellation enabled and up to 40 hours with it disabled. The same specification page lists Bluetooth 5.3 and SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3. LDAC support may appeal to listeners whose source device and settings can use it; otherwise the headphones will use a mutually supported codec.

What Hi-Fi?’s current guide treats the XM6 as a premium all-rounder and gives Sony a sound advantage over Bose in its reviewers’ assessment. That does not establish that every listener will prefer its tuning. The model’s published U.S. listing was $459.99 when accessed in 2026. Check the live page, regional model suffix and warranty before purchase because price and stock move.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen): when cancellation is the priority

What Hi-Fi? names Bose’s second-generation QuietComfort Ultra Headphones as its noise-cancellation leader among the models discussed. The publication also says Sony has narrowed the difference and has sound advantages according to its reviewers. This is useful for narrowing a shortlist, not a substitute for a fit test or a standardized measurement.

Bose engineer Mark Bergeron describes the acoustic approach this way: “Precise acoustic cavity and porting designs help regulate airflow and pressure variations across key frequency ranges, helping to make the system robust, consistent, and well-behaved during transient events or environments.” That is an explanation from a company engineer, not evidence that the product will outperform every rival for every listener.

The supplied specifications do not establish Bose’s battery rating, weight, codec list, switching behavior, wired options, current price, or return terms. Obtain those details from the live regional listing before you commit, especially if you travel often or need a particular Bluetooth feature.

Apple AirPods Max 2: the Apple-device trade-off

AirPods Max 2 is most attractive when convenience across Apple devices is more valuable to you than minimum weight or maximum rated battery life. What Hi-Fi?’s current 2026 guide lists 20 hours of battery life and a 386.2 g weight. Compared with Sony’s 30-hour ANC-on claim, that shorter rating may require more frequent charging on long trips; compared with an unspecified competitor weight, 386.2 g is a concrete figure but not a prediction of comfort.

Before buying, verify the exact generation and availability in your country. Product names, specifications and inventory can change, and the available evidence does not establish the current price, codec support, wired accessories, multipoint behavior or warranty terms. If you use a Windows laptop, Android phone or other non-Apple hardware daily, confirm that the features you expect remain available outside Apple’s ecosystem.

A practical buying process

  1. Write down your main environment. Choose one: aircraft and trains, city commuting, office work, home listening or mixed use.
  2. Rank your top three priorities. For example, cancellation, comfort and battery; or sound, Apple integration and weight.
  3. Shortlist by the primary need. Start with Bose for the cancellation-first path, Sony for a balanced premium path, or AirPods Max 2 for Apple-centric use.
  4. Check the full specification. Confirm battery conditions, weight, codecs, multipoint or handoff, wired operation, included cables and charging connector on the current regional page.
  5. Verify the live price and policies. Record the date and currency, then read the return window, exclusions, warranty provider and replacement-pad availability.
  6. Test the fit and your devices. Pair with every phone and computer you use, make a call, switch sources, enable ANC, walk for at least 20 minutes and listen to familiar tracks.
  7. Keep the receipt and update firmware. Software can change behavior; update only through the maker’s official app and retest switching and ANC afterward.

Travel and commuting advice

For flights, combine a strong seal with ANC and enough battery for the complete itinerary, including airport delays. Sony’s 30-hour ANC-on claim offers more rated headroom than AirPods Max 2’s 20-hour figure, while What Hi-Fi?’s cancellation judgment favors Bose in this group. None of those facts guarantees comfort on your ears, so fit remains decisive.

For a daily commute, transparency quality, quick access to ambient sound and secure adjustment may matter more than the longest laboratory rating. Carry a charging cable, turn ANC off when you need to stretch battery life, and avoid assuming a phone’s USB-C port supports digital audio from every headset.

How long do wireless headphones last on a charge?

The honest answer is model- and mode-specific. Sony rates the WH-1000XM6 for up to 30 hours with ANC on and up to 40 hours with ANC off. What Hi-Fi? lists 20 hours for AirPods Max 2. These are manufacturer or guide figures under stated conditions, not a category-wide average. Your volume, calls, codec, temperature, age of the battery and use of ANC or transparency mode will change the result.

Plan around your worst normal day rather than the largest advertised number. If you regularly spend more than a workday away from a charger, favor the model whose ANC-on rating leaves a margin, carry a cable and confirm whether the headset can play while charging. Do not infer Bose’s endurance from the Sony or Apple figures; its comparable rating was not established in the available evidence.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Choosing by a ranking alone: A guide’s “best” label reflects its test method and priorities. Match the stated reason for the recommendation to your use.
  • Comparing battery numbers without modes: Keep ANC-on and ANC-off figures separate, as Sony’s 30-hour and 40-hour claims demonstrate.
  • Assuming codec support equals better sound: Both the source device and headphones must support the codec, and tuning and fit remain audible factors.
  • Ignoring weight and seal: A heavy or poorly fitting headset can become uncomfortable even if its specifications look excellent.
  • Trusting an old price: Sony’s $459.99 U.S. listing was observed in 2026 and may no longer be current. Recheck every price at checkout.
  • Buying for an ecosystem you do not use: AirPods Max 2’s strongest rationale is Apple-device integration. Confirm compatibility with non-Apple equipment before relying on it.
  • Treating maker claims as lab results: Sony’s seven-times-faster QN3 and 12-microphone statements describe its design; they do not establish a universal cancellation improvement.

What the current guides establish—and what they do not

TechRadar’s guide dated September 9, 2026, advises readers to begin with how they will use headphones because models differ in battery, sound and features. What Hi-Fi?’s current 2026 coverage separates the three candidates by emphasis: Sony as a premium all-rounder, Bose as the cancellation leader and AirPods Max 2 as an Apple-ecosystem option. Those are attributed editorial judgments.

The available evidence does not provide a broad market statistic, consumer-survey result, common laboratory benchmark, complete price list or universal comfort verdict. Treat rankings as time-sensitive, confirm specifications on the current regional product page, and use a return period to validate fit and sound for yourself.
