Best wireless gaming headsets with convenient USB dongle storage

Best overall: the Razer Barracuda V2 Pro is the strongest travel choice because its USB receiver stores under a magnetic earcup faceplate, the earcups fold, and it can maintain 2.4GHz and Bluetooth 6.0 connections at the same time. Choose the HyperX Cloud MIX 2 if maximum battery endurance matters more, or the NUBWO G06 Pro if you want a desk dock that keeps both headset and receiver together. A USB dongle being included in the box is not the same as the headset having a place to store it; the models below are separated by how, and where, the receiver is retained.

Best wireless headsets with receiver storage at a glance

Model Receiver-storage design Wireless and wired connections Stated battery figures Portability and notable features Important qualification
Razer Barracuda V2 Pro Integrated compartment beneath a magnetic left-earcup faceplate 2.4GHz wireless, Bluetooth 6.0, USB-C wired connection Up to 70 hours with ANC off; up to 50 hours with ANC on Foldable earcups, simultaneous 2.4GHz and Bluetooth, detachable or internal microphone options, 7.1.4 surround sound Manufacturer and Tom’s Guide specifications; console support listed for PC, PlayStation 5 and Switch
HyperX Cloud MIX 2 USB-C dongle stored in an earcup 2.4GHz USB-C wireless, Bluetooth 5.3, wired operation Up to 110 hours on Bluetooth with ANC off; 70 hours on Bluetooth with ANC on; 72 hours on 2.4GHz with ANC off; 52 hours on 2.4GHz with ANC on Hybrid ANC and dual wireless modes Figures come from a retailer listing; check the regional model and current listing
NUBWO G06 Pro Built-in receiver storage associated with its desk dock 2.4GHz wireless, Bluetooth 5.3, wired connection Up to 120 hours claimed by the manufacturer PS5-compatible dock-oriented design; suited to a permanent desk setup Battery figure is a manufacturer claim; dock details and regional bundles can vary
Alienware AW988 Slot inside the headset; receiver clicks in and is released by pressing again, with a magnet assisting removal USB wireless receiver and wired connections documented in the user guide Not stated in the cited user guide Useful historical example of internal receiver retention Older product; current availability was not established
SteelSeries Arctis Nova 4, Nova 5 and Nova 7 No integrated storage documented on the pages checked USB-C wireless dongles and broad platform support Varies by model and mode; verify the individual specification Mainstream wireless alternatives when a separate receiver case is acceptable Do not assume the headset stores the dongle merely because a USB-C receiver is included

What “dongle storage” actually means

A wireless gaming headset normally uses a small USB receiver to create its low-latency 2.4GHz link. That receiver is easy to misplace because it is removed from the console, laptop or dock whenever you pack the headset. Integrated storage solves that specific problem: the headset has a slot, cavity or magnetic compartment where the receiver travels with it.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

This is different from three common arrangements:

  • Included receiver only: the headset ships with a USB adapter, but provides no place to keep it.
  • External storage: a carrying case, desk drawer or third-party pouch holds the adapter. This can work, but the receiver is no longer physically attached to the headset.
  • Dock storage: a stand or dock gives the receiver a dedicated home at a desk. It is convenient in one room, but less useful if you leave the dock behind when travelling.

For travel, a compartment in an earcup is the most reliable arrangement because the receiver remains with the headset even when no case is available. A dock is better when the headset lives beside one console or computer and you want a repeatable place to park the hardware.

Razer Barracuda V2 Pro: the best all-round travel pick

Razer explicitly describes the Barracuda V2 Pro as having “built-in dongle storage” and an “ultra-portable foldable design.” The receiver sits under a magnetic faceplate on the left earcup, so you can remove the cover, push the USB adapter into the cavity and close the plate without carrying a separate container. The magnetic cover also avoids a hinged door that could become loose in a bag.

  • On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.8 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.

The headset is designed for people who switch between a gaming device and a phone. Its 2.4GHz link targets low-latency play, while Bluetooth 6.0 handles mobile or general listening; both can remain connected simultaneously. Razer lists PC, mobile and console connectivity, and Tom’s Guide specifically lists PC, PlayStation 5 and Switch compatibility. Check the exact console connection method before buying, since a USB-C receiver may require an adapter or an available USB port.

Razer rates the battery for up to 70 hours with active noise cancellation disabled and up to 50 hours with ANC enabled. Those are rated figures rather than a guarantee for every volume level, codec, microphone state or wireless mode. ANC is useful on a train or in a shared room, while disabling it maximizes the quoted endurance.

Microphone and audio options

The Barracuda V2 Pro has a dual-mode microphone system: a detachable Razer HyperClear Full Band Mic for gaming chat and internal beamforming microphones when you want a cleaner, less conspicuous setup. Razer also lists 7.1.4 surround sound. Treat surround processing as a software and profile feature rather than as a replacement for careful game audio settings; competitive players may prefer a simpler stereo profile.

Why it is the safest recommendation

  • The receiver compartment is explicitly documented rather than inferred from product photographs.
  • Foldable earcups reduce the space needed in a travel bag.
  • Simultaneous wireless connections reduce the need to re-pair when moving from a console or PC to a phone.
  • There is a wired USB-C fallback if the battery is empty or wireless interference is severe.

Pick this model when preventing receiver loss and moving between platforms are more important than achieving the longest quoted runtime.

HyperX Cloud MIX 2: the long-runtime alternative

The Cloud MIX 2 places its USB-C receiver in an earcup, directly addressing the “where did I put the dongle?” problem. It combines a 2.4GHz USB-C connection for gaming with Bluetooth 5.3 for phones, tablets and other compatible devices, and it includes hybrid active noise cancellation.

The published listing gives four different endurance figures because both the wireless mode and ANC state change power use:

  • Up to 110 hours on Bluetooth with ANC off.
  • Up to 70 hours on Bluetooth with ANC on.
  • Up to 72 hours on 2.4GHz with ANC off.
  • Up to 52 hours on 2.4GHz with ANC on.

These numbers are listing specifications, not a single universal battery result. Confirm that the regional Cloud MIX 2 version you are ordering has the same receiver, Bluetooth version and storage arrangement; retailer bundles can change over time.

Who should choose it

The Cloud MIX 2 makes sense for a traveller who spends long stretches listening over Bluetooth and wants to charge infrequently. Its 2.4GHz figure is still substantial for gaming, but the headline 110-hour number applies only to Bluetooth with ANC disabled. If your primary use is wireless console gaming with ANC enabled, use the 52-hour 2.4GHz figure as the more relevant planning number.

NUBWO G06 Pro: a dock-first budget-style setup

NUBWO positions the G06 Pro around a PS5-compatible dock design. The system combines 2.4GHz wireless, Bluetooth 5.3 and a wired connection, while providing built-in receiver storage and a stated battery capacity of up to 120 hours. The dock gives the headset and USB adapter a fixed home beside a monitor or console, reducing the chance that either component is left in a different room.

This arrangement is most useful when the headset spends most of its life at one desk. Before travelling, verify that the receiver is actually stored in the headset or in a detachable part you will pack; a dock left at home cannot protect the adapter once you leave. Also check the package contents for the correct console cable and receiver type, especially if a retailer offers multiple G06 variants.

Trade-offs versus an earcup compartment

  • Advantage: a dock creates a visible, repeatable parking place for the headset and receiver.
  • Limitation: desk storage is less portable than a compartment attached to the earcup.
  • Battery caveat: 120 hours is a manufacturer claim; actual endurance depends on connection mode, volume, microphone use and lighting or other powered features.

Historical context: Alienware AW988

The AW988 user guide documents an internal receiver slot. You push the wireless dongle into the slot until it clicks, press again to release it, and use the built-in magnet to help remove it. That is a clear example of the retention mechanism readers are looking for, but the AW988 is an older headset and current availability was not established. Consider the design a useful reference when inspecting second-hand listings, not a current default recommendation.

Why some popular wireless headsets do not qualify

Pages for the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 4, Nova 5 and Nova 7 confirm USB-C wireless dongles and broad platform support. They do not document an integrated slot or compartment in the headset. That does not make them poor wireless headsets; it means you should plan to keep the receiver in a case, pouch or dedicated desk location. Do not infer receiver storage from a product image, a USB-C connector or the presence of a charging stand. Look for an explicit storage statement or a manual diagram for the exact model.

How to choose the right storage design

Choose an earcup compartment for frequent travel

An earcup slot or magnetic cover is the best match for flights, tournaments, school bags and multi-room use. The receiver remains attached to the headset, and the storage action takes only a few seconds. Check that the compartment closes securely and that the receiver does not protrude far enough to catch on fabric.

Choose a dock for a fixed gaming station

A dock is preferable when one desk is the headset’s permanent home. It keeps the receiver visible and can make daily setup more consistent. It does not replace a travel-storage solution unless the headset also has an internal slot.

Prioritize dual wireless when you switch devices

2.4GHz is normally the gaming link supplied by the USB receiver. Bluetooth is useful for a phone or tablet, but Bluetooth versions and simultaneous-connection behavior differ. The Barracuda V2 Pro documents simultaneous 2.4GHz and Bluetooth 6.0; the Cloud MIX 2 lists Bluetooth 5.3 alongside its 2.4GHz receiver. Confirm the exact switching controls before assuming that two active connections will behave identically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match battery figures to your actual mode

Manufacturers and retailers often quote the most favorable mode. ANC, 2.4GHz radio use, microphone activity, high volume and decorative lighting can all reduce runtime. Compare like with like: Bluetooth versus Bluetooth, 2.4GHz versus 2.4GHz, and ANC on versus ANC on. A lower but relevant figure is more useful than a headline number from a mode you will never use.

Compatibility checklist before purchase

  • Console: confirm whether the receiver works directly with your PlayStation, Xbox, Switch or handheld. USB-C and USB-A adapters are not interchangeable without the correct cable or adapter.
  • PC: check whether the manufacturer’s software supports your operating system and whether firmware updates require a wired connection.
  • Mobile: Bluetooth support is convenient, but some phones lack a full-size USB port for a 2.4GHz receiver.
  • Wired fallback: verify which cable carries audio and whether the headset can operate while charging.
  • Microphone: detachable boom microphones are easier to replace or remove; internal beamforming microphones are less intrusive but can sound different in a noisy room.
  • Regional model: product names can cover bundles with different cables, colors or receiver formats. Match the model number, not only the marketing name.
  • Warranty and seller: confirm the warranty region, return period and seller before paying, particularly for older or marketplace stock.

How to set up and protect the receiver

  1. Identify the correct adapter. Keep the 2.4GHz receiver that came with the headset; a generic USB Bluetooth adapter will not replace a proprietary gaming receiver.
  2. Pair before travelling. Plug the receiver into the PC or console, turn on the headset and complete any pairing or firmware process while you still have internet access and the original cable.
  3. Store it immediately. For the Barracuda V2 Pro, open the magnetic earcup faceplate and place the receiver in the documented cavity. For the Cloud MIX 2, use the earcup storage location. For a dock-based setup, return the receiver to the dock after each session.
  4. Pack the charging cable separately. Receiver storage prevents loss, but it does not charge the headset. A short USB-C cable in the same travel pouch avoids an otherwise unnecessary search.
  5. Keep a platform adapter with the receiver. If your console requires USB-A while the headset uses USB-C, pack the supplied adapter or extension with the headset rather than leaving it connected to a stationary device.
  6. Check the slot after transit. Before plugging in at a hotel, event or friend’s house, open the compartment and confirm that the receiver is still seated. A magnetic cover or click mechanism can be disturbed by a hard impact even when the headset looks intact.

Troubleshooting receiver-storage and wireless problems

The headset powers on but the console cannot hear it

  • Remove and reinsert the receiver directly into the console or its approved adapter; avoid an unpowered USB hub during diagnosis.
  • Confirm that the headset is in 2.4GHz mode rather than Bluetooth mode.
  • Check the console’s audio-output menu and select the USB headset if it is not selected automatically.
  • Test the receiver on a computer. If it works there, the issue is more likely a console port, adapter or compatibility setting.

The receiver is missing from the earcup

  • Check the travel case, the last console used and any USB extension cable before assuming it was lost.
  • Inspect the storage cavity for dust or a loose faceplate; do not force a receiver into a slot that does not match its shape.
  • Use the manufacturer’s replacement-parts process. Proprietary 2.4GHz receivers are generally paired to a headset and are not interchangeable with ordinary USB Bluetooth adapters.

Battery life is far below the quoted figure

Compare your use with the test condition printed in the specification. ANC, 2.4GHz operation, high volume, microphone transmission and additional lighting can all explain a shorter result. Fully charge the headset, disable optional effects for one cycle and note the runtime; a large change points to a feature setting, while a consistently short result may indicate battery wear or a fault.

Bluetooth works but 2.4GHz does not

Bluetooth and the USB receiver use separate radios and pairing paths. Reconnect the receiver, select the 2.4GHz input on the headset and install any available firmware update using the manufacturer’s supported software. If the receiver was replaced, it may need model-specific re-pairing rather than ordinary Bluetooth pairing.

What to verify in a current listing

Prices, sellers, bundles and warranty terms change by country and over time, and no single current price is established for these models. Before ordering, check the product photographs and specification sheet for the exact words “built-in dongle storage,” “receiver storage” or an equivalent manual illustration. Confirm the battery mode behind every runtime number, the included USB connector, console support and return policy. For the Cloud MIX 2 in particular, verify that the retailer’s regional listing matches the Bluetooth and receiver details above.

Final recommendation

Buy the Razer Barracuda V2 Pro when your main concern is carrying a complete wireless setup without losing the receiver: its documented magnetic earcup compartment, foldability and simultaneous 2.4GHz/Bluetooth operation make it the most balanced choice. Select the HyperX Cloud MIX 2 for the longest quoted Bluetooth endurance with an earcup-stored dongle. Choose the NUBWO G06 Pro when a PS5-compatible desk dock and a very long manufacturer-rated battery claim fit your routine better than maximum travel compactness. Treat the SteelSeries Nova models as capable wireless alternatives only if you are willing to store their USB-C receiver separately.
