Quick picks for Steam Machine
| Best fit | Controller choice | Why it fits | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam-focused controls and the strongest platform evidence | Valve Steam Controller (2026) | Valve explicitly names Steam Machine compatibility and documents puck, Bluetooth, USB and Steam Input community configurations. | This is the strongest evidence-backed fit, not proof that every player will prefer its layout. |
| Conventional gamepad with documented Steam support | 8BitDo Pro 3 Bluetooth Gamepad | 8BitDo lists it as compatible with Steam and documents D-input/Bluetooth pairing, Steam Input features, gyro configuration and button mapping. | Use the required mode and meet the stated SteamOS, Windows and firmware requirements. |
| Another conventional 8BitDo option | 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller | Named by 8BitDo on its Steam compatibility page. | Do not assume its wireless modes or firmware requirements are identical to another 8BitDo model. |
| Existing controller already in your collection | Compatible Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro or DirectInput model | Steam Input officially supports these major controller families. | Check the individual game and the controller’s connection method before buying another pad. |
The practical order is simple: start with the Steam Controller if explicit Steam Machine integration matters most; choose a documented 8BitDo model for a familiar pad; consider an existing Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro or DirectInput controller when avoiding a new purchase is the priority.
What “works with Steam Machine” actually means
Controller compatibility has several layers. A controller may be recognized by the SteamOS environment, translated by Steam Input, detected by a particular game, and still fail to expose one of its special features. Treating those as the same thing is the source of many disappointing setups.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Platform recognition
At the broadest level, Steam must be able to communicate with the controller over its chosen connection. Valve’s Steam Input documentation names Steam Controller, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch Pro, PlayStation 3 and DirectInput gamepads. Controller variants that use the same input protocol are included in that family-level support.
Game-level support
A title can recognize a controller directly, rely on Steam Input to translate it, or provide only partial support. Valve notes that full controller support does not necessarily mean a game uses every feature available on a particular controller. Partial support can still require a mouse and keyboard for menus, text entry or other interactions.
Feature-level support
Gyro aiming, extra paddles, remapping, touch-oriented controls and other special functions depend on the controller, its active mode and the game’s input implementation. A controller can be usable for ordinary movement and buttons while leaving a special feature unused. That is why a compatibility label should be read as a starting point rather than a promise that every control behaves identically in every title.

Valve Steam Controller (2026): the strongest Steam-specific choice
Valve’s product information explicitly lists the Steam Controller (2026) as compatible with Steam Machine. It describes three ways to connect: a dedicated wireless puck, Bluetooth and USB. Valve also highlights Steam Input community configurations, which let players use or adapt layouts created for particular games and play styles.
Why choose it
- Direct platform evidence: Steam Machine compatibility is stated by Valve rather than inferred from a generic PC controller listing.
- Multiple connection paths: the puck provides a dedicated wireless option, while Bluetooth and USB give alternatives for pairing, troubleshooting or charging.
- Steam-oriented configuration: Steam Input community layouts are designed around the wide variety of games in a Steam library, including titles that were not built around one standard gamepad layout.
Pairing approach
Valve’s associated support guide covers pairing the controller to its puck or directly to Steam Machine. Follow the pairing sequence for the connection you intend to use rather than switching modes randomly. If a wireless connection is not detected, connect by USB first, confirm that the controller is visible to Steam, then retry the documented wireless pairing method.
Who should not assume it is automatically ideal
“Steam-specific” does not mean universally superior. Players who strongly prefer a conventional dual-stick or Xbox-style layout may find a familiar gamepad easier to adopt. The official material establishes integration and configuration capabilities, not a comparative comfort, latency, battery or durability result. Those factors should be judged from the exact model and your own priorities, not from the compatibility label alone.
Rank #2
- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
8BitDo controllers: the clearest conventional alternatives
8BitDo’s Steam compatibility page names four models: the Pro 3 Bluetooth Gamepad, Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller, Pro 2 Bluetooth Gamepad and SN30 Pro Bluetooth Gamepad. This makes them useful alternatives for players who want a conventional gamepad while still having manufacturer-published Steam instructions.
| Model named by 8BitDo | Documented Steam status | Setup points to check |
|---|---|---|
| Pro 3 Bluetooth Gamepad | Listed as compatible with Steam | Use D-input/Bluetooth mode; meet the platform and firmware requirements shown for this model. |
| Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller | Listed as compatible with Steam | Use the model’s documented D-input/Bluetooth procedure and verify its own firmware notes. |
| Pro 2 Bluetooth Gamepad | Listed as compatible with Steam | Use D-input/Bluetooth mode and check the current firmware requirement for the exact unit. |
| SN30 Pro Bluetooth Gamepad | Listed as compatible with Steam | Use D-input/Bluetooth mode and confirm the model-specific firmware requirement. |
Requirements listed by 8BitDo
8BitDo specifies SteamOS 3.7.13 or above and Windows 10 or Windows 11 for the compatibility information on its Steam page. It also lists firmware requirements for some models. Because those firmware requirements vary by model and can change, check the current requirement for the exact controller before pairing; do not apply one model’s firmware number to another.
Correct connection mode
The important instruction is to use D-input/Bluetooth mode when pairing with Steam. A controller left in a different protocol mode may be powered on but appear as an unsupported or incorrectly mapped device. Put the controller into the documented D-input/Bluetooth mode first, then start Bluetooth pairing from Steam Machine and select the controller when it appears.
Features beyond basic buttons
8BitDo’s compatibility information describes Steam Input feature support, gyro configuration and button mapping. Those capabilities are useful only when the selected Steam Input layout and the game make use of them. A gyro-capable controller does not force every game to accept gyro input, and a programmable button does not guarantee that a title exposes a useful action to assign.
Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro and DirectInput options
If you already own a controller, Steam Input may make a new purchase unnecessary. Valve’s documentation names Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch Pro, PlayStation 3 and DirectInput gamepads among supported devices. This is broad platform support, not a guarantee for every wireless model sold under those families.

Xbox controllers
Xbox 360 and Xbox One families are explicitly included in Steam Input’s supported-device list. They are a sensible choice for players who already know the Xbox button layout or want a conventional pad. Verify the exact wireless method used by your model and check the game’s own controller information before assuming every title will expose all controls.

PlayStation controllers
PlayStation 4 is named in Valve’s Steam Input device documentation, and Valve’s Steam guidance identifies DualSense and DualShock compatibility information in the store and library. Valve also warns that PlayStation support in PC games can depend on whether the developer supports USB, Bluetooth or Steam Input. A controller that works over USB may therefore behave differently over Bluetooth, and a game that supports one PlayStation path may not support another.
Nintendo Switch Pro
Nintendo Switch Pro is included in Valve’s supported controller families. As with the other families, check the exact wireless mode and the game’s compatibility details. Family-level support does not establish that every title uses every button, motion feature or menu interaction.
DirectInput gamepads
DirectInput support is useful for older or less standardized PC controllers. It also explains why two controllers with similar physical layouts can produce different in-game results: the protocol presented to Steam and the game matters as much as the shell’s appearance.
How to check a game before you buy a controller
Do not evaluate a controller only against the Steam Machine home screen. Check the games you actually play, especially titles with unusual menus, motion controls or mouse-oriented interfaces.
- Open the game’s Steam store or library information. Look for the controller compatibility information Valve provides for that title.
- Identify the support level. Full controller support means the game is intended to be playable with a controller, but it does not promise that every special feature on your chosen pad is used. Partial support means some interactions may still require mouse and keyboard.
- Check the controller family and connection method. Valve notes that PlayStation behavior can depend on USB, Bluetooth or Steam Input. Treat those as separate cases when the game’s information distinguishes them.
- Look for feature-specific needs. If you rely on gyro, extra buttons or a custom layout, confirm that the game and the Steam Input configuration can map the feature you need.
- Test one representative title before buying several controllers. Use the game that best reflects your library: a modern controller-first title, an older PC game and a menu-heavy or mouse-focused game can expose different limitations.
This process prevents a common mistake: buying a controller because Steam recognizes it, then discovering that the one game you care about requires a different connection or still needs keyboard input.
Pairing and setup checklist
For the Steam Controller (2026)
- Choose the intended connection: the dedicated puck, Bluetooth or USB.
- Use Valve’s pairing procedure for the puck or Steam Machine rather than assuming Bluetooth pairing steps apply to the puck.
- Confirm that Steam sees the controller before launching a game.
- Open the game’s controller configuration and select an existing Steam Input community layout or create an arrangement suited to the title.
- Test menus as well as gameplay. A layout that handles movement and combat can still leave menu navigation or text entry inconvenient.
For an 8BitDo model
- Confirm that the Steam Machine is running SteamOS 3.7.13 or newer, as specified by 8BitDo’s Steam compatibility information.
- Check the exact model’s firmware requirement and update it if needed.
- Switch the controller to D-input/Bluetooth mode.
- Start Bluetooth pairing on Steam Machine and select the controller’s device name.
- Verify button mapping in Steam Input before opening the game.
- If you intend to use gyro or programmable buttons, assign and test those features in the game’s Steam Input configuration rather than assuming the default layout enables them.
For Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro or DirectInput controllers
- Identify the exact model and its wireless protocol.
- Pair it with Steam Machine and confirm which input family Steam reports.
- Check the game’s Steam compatibility information, paying particular attention to PlayStation connection notes.
- Test the title with Steam Input enabled and, where available, compare the result with the game’s native controller mode.
- Keep a keyboard or mouse available for games marked with partial controller support.
Troubleshooting common failures
The controller powers on but Steam does not detect it
First verify the active protocol. This is especially important for 8BitDo models, which require D-input/Bluetooth mode for the documented Steam setup. If wireless pairing continues to fail, connect by USB where supported, confirm that the controller and Steam Machine recognize one another, then retry the correct wireless procedure.

The controller is detected but buttons are wrong
Check whether the controller is in the intended mode and whether Steam Input has loaded a suitable layout. A controller presented through the wrong protocol can produce a valid connection with incorrect labels or mappings. Select a game-specific layout instead of relying on a generic desktop mapping.
One game works while another does not
This is usually a game-support difference, not proof that the controller is defective. Review the second title’s full or partial support status and its notes about Xbox, DualSense, DualShock, USB, Bluetooth or Steam Input. A game can support ordinary button input while leaving gyro, extra buttons or mouse-like interactions unavailable.
Wireless works in one mode but not another
Connection methods are not interchangeable. Valve specifically notes that PlayStation support can vary between USB, Bluetooth and Steam Input. Use the method named for the game and controller combination, and avoid treating successful USB behavior as evidence that Bluetooth will be identical.
A game still asks for a keyboard or mouse
That can be expected when the title has partial controller support. Full controller support also does not mean every interaction is redesigned for a controller. Keep a keyboard or mouse accessible for text entry, launchers, configuration screens and other interactions the game does not expose through its controller layer.

You want the most explicit Steam Machine integration
Choose the Steam Controller (2026). It is the only option in this comparison that Valve explicitly identifies as compatible with Steam Machine, and it offers the puck, Bluetooth, USB and Steam Input community configurations in one platform-focused product.
You want a familiar conventional gamepad
Start with one of the four 8BitDo models named on the manufacturer’s Steam page, provided you are comfortable using D-input/Bluetooth mode and meeting the stated software and firmware requirements. An Xbox, PlayStation or Switch Pro controller you already own can also be practical if your games support its connection method.

- Connection modes:Wired/Bluetooth/Wireless Dongle(Connect to PC via Bluetooth : Select iOS (phone) mode, but it's not recommended; Dongle is more stable)
- 【Innovative Intelligent Interactive Screen】Manba One V2 wireless game controllers create a new era of controller screens; Equipped with a 2-inch display, no App & software needed, you can set the pc controller directly through the screen visualization, More convenient operation
- 【Micro Switch Button】Manba One wireless controller has Micro Switch Button and ALPS Bumper; The 6-axis gyroscope function makes switch games more immersive
- 【Customize Your Own Controller】The intelligent interactive screen allows you to easily set vibrations, buttons, joysticks, lights, etc., without the need for complex key combinations; 4 configurations can be saved to unlock your own gameplay for different games; The 4 back keys support macro definition settings, and you can activate the set character's ultimate move with one click
You play a mixed Steam library
Prioritize configurable Steam Input support over a single console identity. Your library may contain modern controller-first games, older DirectInput titles and games that expect mouse-like controls. The ability to select or edit a per-game layout can matter more than the logo on the controller.
You mainly play one controller-friendly title
Use that game’s Steam compatibility information as the deciding test. A controller that is broadly supported may still lack the one feature your title uses, while a simpler conventional pad may be all you need for a game with full standard-button support.
Price, availability and what is not established
Current prices, regional availability and stock were not verified for this comparison. They can change by country, retailer and date, so a specific amount or “in stock” claim would quickly become stale. The same limitation applies to battery endurance, wireless latency, long-term durability and controller wake-from-sleep behavior: the official information reviewed here does not establish comparative results for those points.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the compatibility evidence first, then check the current listing for your region. For the Steam Controller, confirm that the listing is the 2026 model and that the included wireless hardware matches the connection method you intend to use. For 8BitDo, confirm the exact model, firmware requirement and D-input/Bluetooth instructions. For an existing Xbox, PlayStation or Switch Pro pad, verify the model and the game’s connection-specific support.
What Valve’s controller figures do—and do not—tell you
Valve reported in a November 20, 2023 Steam post that more than 3 billion controller-inclusive game sessions occurred during the preceding year. Valve said 60% of those sessions used Xbox controllers and 27% used PlayStation models. For comparison, Valve reported 990 million controller sessions in the year ending November 2019, with Xbox at 76% and PlayStation at 19%.
These are historical Steam platform figures, not current market-share estimates and not measurements of Steam Machine owners. They do show why Xbox and PlayStation families deserve consideration alongside Steam-focused hardware, but they do not prove that one family has lower latency, better battery life or broader game compatibility in every setup.
Bottom line: match the controller to the evidence and your library
The Valve Steam Controller (2026) is the safest recommendation when your main requirement is explicit Steam Machine compatibility and Steam-oriented configuration. The 8BitDo Pro 3 Bluetooth Gamepad, Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller, Pro 2 Bluetooth Gamepad and SN30 Pro Bluetooth Gamepad are documented conventional alternatives, provided you use D-input/Bluetooth mode and satisfy the stated SteamOS and firmware requirements. Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro and DirectInput controllers remain viable through Steam Input, especially when you already own one, but the exact game and wireless method decide the result. Check those details before purchasing, and treat “full controller support” as a baseline for playability—not a promise that every special feature will work.
