There is no single best wired headphone for every listener. Choose by where you listen, how much isolation you need, whether you want an over-ear or in-ear fit, and what connector your device supports. The Sennheiser HD 560S is a sourced option for budget-minded open-back listening; the HD 480 PRO is a closed-back studio candidate; and the foldable HD 400S is a portable closed-back example. These are use-case picks, not universal winners.
Which wired headphones fit your use?
Wired headphones can be useful for low-latency listening and, with traditional analog models, playback without a battery. Those advantages depend on the specific design: USB headphones need a compatible digital connection, while wireless headphones used over a cable may still need power for some features.

| Sennheiser HD 560S | Budget-minded audiophile listening; named a budget audiophile pick by Crutchfield’s 2026 guide and included among RTINGS’ wired over-ear picks. | Open-back over-ear. | Open-back headphones are a poor choice when you need to block noise or prevent sound from escaping. | Not stated in the cited sources. | Not stated in the cited sources. | Not stated in the cited sources. | Check the source’s ability to drive the headphones; the cited sources do not establish a universal device pairing. | Not stated in the cited sources. |
| Sennheiser HD 480 PRO | Studio use. | Wired, closed-back professional over-ear. | Closed-back is the better starting point when isolation matters, though the cited manufacturer page does not quantify isolation. | 3.5 mm and 6.3 mm connectors; included-adapter details are not stated in the cited source. | Detachable cable. | Not stated in the cited source. | Sennheiser lists 130 ohms impedance and sensitivity of 107 dB SPL at 1 Vrms (98 dB SPL at 1 mW). These specifications alone do not establish whether a particular phone or computer will provide adequate volume. | Not stated in the cited sources. |
| Sennheiser HD 400S | Portable closed-back over-ear listening. | Foldable, closed-back over-ear. | Closed-back is a reasonable starting point for greater isolation than an open-back design; the cited source does not provide a quantified isolation rating. | Detachable, single-sided 3.5 mm cable; bundle and regional availability should be checked for the exact listing. | Yes; Sennheiser lists a model-specific RCS400 replacement cable. | One-button remote on the listed cable; microphone support is not established by the cited manufacturer details. | Confirm that the source has a compatible headphone output or adapter; the cited page does not give a universal device compatibility list. | Not stated in the cited sources. |

Open-back or closed-back?
Choose open-back for a quiet listening space
Open-back over-ears let sound pass through their outer cups. This design can suit focused listening in a quiet room, but it does not provide the isolation needed for noisy surroundings and can disturb people nearby. The HD 560S is a sourced open-back candidate, not a choice for shared quiet spaces or commuting where leakage and outside noise matter.

- Lightweight 1.38 in neodymium dynamic drivers deliver a punchy, rhythmic response to even the most demanding tracks. Driver Unit: Dome type.Specific uses for product : Travel
- The swiveling earcup design allows easy storage when you’re not using them, and enhances portability when you’re traveling
- Cushioned earpads for total comfort and enfolding closed-back design seals in sound

- Plug: L-shaped stereo mini plug 3.5mm. Impedance (Ohm) 24 ohm (1KHz). Cord Length 3.94 ft
Choose closed-back or in-ear when isolation matters
Closed-back over-ears and in-ear monitors are better starting points when you want to reduce environmental sound or keep your listening private. The HD 480 PRO and HD 400S are closed-back examples. The cited product information does not quantify how much noise either model blocks, so do not treat “closed-back” as a guarantee of noise cancellation.
Will the headphones connect to your device?
Match the plug and signal path to the device, not just the headphone description. A 3.5 mm plug will not fit a phone or computer without that jack. A compatible USB-C or Lightning audio adapter may be needed; for home equipment, a 6.3 mm connection may be relevant. An adapter that produces headphone audio does not necessarily pass microphone input or remote controls.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
If you need a microphone or remote
Check that the exact cable carries microphone input and supports the controls you want. For example, a request for an over-ear headset with a microphone and Apple Lightning output combines three separate requirements: fit, mic support, and a Lightning-compatible connection. Confirm each one for the model and adapter. Do not assume that a generic Lightning headphone adapter supports every mic or control function.
If you use an adapter, DAC, or amplifier
Check the adapter’s compatibility with your device and the headphone’s plug. A DAC or headphone amplifier can be appropriate when the source output is insufficient, but buying one solely because a headphone has a particular impedance is not a reliable rule. The HD 480 PRO’s manufacturer specifications, for instance, should be considered alongside the actual source; impedance alone does not tell you whether your phone will drive it adequately.

Does wired playback require a battery?
Traditional analog headphones generally play without a battery, but “wired” does not always mean “passive.” USB models rely on a digital connection, and some wireless headphones accept a cable while still requiring battery power for playback or features. Verify the exact model’s behavior before choosing it for battery-independent listening.
Active noise cancellation is uncommon in traditional wired headphones. What Hi-Fi? discusses the Lindy BNX-60 as an example, but that category observation is not enough to establish current availability or make it a current recommendation. Check the particular model’s power and wired-mode requirements rather than assuming that a cable means ANC will work without charging.

What to check before buying
- Listening environment: Open-back suits quiet spaces; closed-back or in-ear is a better starting point for isolation.
- Fit: Decide whether you want over-ear headphones or in-ear monitors, and whether a foldable design matters for carrying.
- Connection: Confirm the plug, any required adapter, and whether the adapter supports your microphone and controls.
- Power and volume: Determine whether the headphones are analog, USB, or a wireless model with wired mode, and whether your source can drive them.
- Cable and service parts: Confirm whether the cable detaches and whether replacement cables or pads match the exact model and generation. Sennheiser lists an RCS400 cable for the HD 400S and cables and pad sets for the HD 480/490 PRO family; verify compatibility on the relevant HD 400S or HD 480 PRO page.
- Exact listing: Check regional availability and what is included in the bundle. Prices and stock are not established by the cited sources.
How to choose among these candidates
- Choose the environment first. If you listen in a quiet room and do not mind sound leakage, consider the open-back HD 560S. If you need a closed-back design, compare the HD 480 PRO for studio use with the foldable HD 400S for portability.
- Check the connection end to end. Match the headphone plug to the source, then verify any needed adapter, microphone path, and remote support.
- Check volume capability and power needs. Confirm your source can provide a useful listening level and whether the chosen model needs power for wired playback or features.
- Verify the exact model and bundle. Look for the correct cable, adapters, microphone, replacement parts, regional availability, and live price before ordering.
