Best overall fit: choose a powered stereo pair that explicitly lists Bluetooth plus the wired inputs your sources provide. The Audioengine A5+ Wireless is the most flexible of the documented candidates, with Bluetooth, RCA and 3.5 mm inputs. For a smaller setup, the Audioengine A1 offers Bluetooth and 3.5 mm; the Edifier R1080BT is an entry-level alternative with Line In and AUX; and the Edifier e25HD adds optical input as well as AUX.
“Wired Bluetooth speaker” normally means a powered speaker that accepts wireless Bluetooth audio and also accepts a cable. It does not mean a passive speaker that works without an amplifier. The guide below compares published specifications, explains source compatibility, and shows when a Bluetooth receiver or digital-to-analog converter is actually needed. The listed specifications are manufacturer claims, not results from controlled listening tests.

What a wired Bluetooth speaker is
A wired Bluetooth speaker combines two connection methods in one powered system. Bluetooth receives audio wirelessly from a phone, tablet or computer, while a physical input carries audio from a computer, television, turntable, CD player or another source. The cable connection can be useful when a source has no Bluetooth, when you want to avoid wireless latency, or when a permanent installation should not depend on pairing.
Most products in this category are active (powered) speakers. They contain amplification, input circuitry and volume controls, and they plug into an electrical outlet. A passive speaker has no built-in amplifier and must connect to a separate amplifier or to a powered host speaker. Edifier’s active/passive explanation describes active models as having input ports, controls and a power cord, while passive models connect by speaker wire to the active speaker in the arrangement.

Model revisions and regional configurations can change the specifications, so check the current product page before ordering.
How to choose the right model
1. Decide between a stereo pair and one enclosure
A stereo pair places left and right channels apart, which is useful for a desk, television or room where you want directional imaging. The A5+ Wireless, A1 and R1080BT are positioned as powered systems with separate speaker enclosures. The B2 is a single-speaker alternative, simplifying placement and cabling at the cost of conventional left-right separation. The e25HD is also a distinct form factor from a traditional bookshelf pair; confirm its physical arrangement and placement requirements for your room.

- 3.5 mm analog: use a standard stereo mini-jack output from a computer, phone adapter or other line-level device.
- RCA analog: use the left/right line outputs found on many components. The A5+ specifically documents RCA L/R and 3.5 mm inputs.
- Optical digital: useful for televisions and other digital sources, but only a speaker with an optical input can accept that signal directly. The e25HD lists optical and AUX.
- Bluetooth: pair a compatible source when you want wireless playback. Codec benefits depend on the source device and the codec it supports.
Do not infer an input from a category label such as “bookshelf” or “Bluetooth speaker.” Read the rear-panel specification for the exact model.
3. Treat power and response as filters, not rankings
RMS output and frequency-response figures help indicate the intended scale of a system, but they are measured and reported by each manufacturer under its own conditions. The e25HD lists 74 W RMS total, the R1080BT lists 24 W RMS total, and the A1 lists 15 W RMS per channel. Those numbers cannot, by themselves, predict maximum clean volume, bass extension or sound quality across brands. The A5+ publishes a 50 Hz–22 kHz response with a ±1.5 dB tolerance; that figure should be read as a specification for that model, not a universal performance ranking.
4. Consider Bluetooth implementation and codec support
The A5+ lists aptX HD, the A1 page identifies Bluetooth without the same codec detail, the R1080BT page lists Bluetooth 5.1, the e25HD lists LDAC, and the B2 lists aptX. A codec can matter only when the transmitting device supports it and the connection negotiates it. Bluetooth version numbers also do not replace checking the actual input and output arrangement.

5. Account for placement and power
Every powered model needs mains power, even when the audio source is wireless. Leave room for the power cable and for the speaker-to-speaker connection where the design uses a pair. A desk setup may favor the smaller A1 or R1080BT; a room-filling installation may benefit from a larger stereo system, but choose based on placement and input needs rather than wattage alone.
Model-by-model guidance
Audioengine A5+ Wireless: the most versatile analog-input pair
The A5+ Wireless is a powered Bluetooth aptX HD system with both 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack and RCA L/R inputs. That combination covers a computer, analog television output, CD player, turntable with a suitable phono stage, or other line-level equipment without changing cables. Its published 50 Hz–22 kHz ±1.5 dB response and larger powered-pair format make it a logical choice when you want a conventional stereo arrangement and several analog sources.
It does not, according to the documented specification, provide a native optical input. A television that outputs only optical audio therefore needs conversion before the signal reaches the A5+ analog input.
Audioengine A1: compact powered Bluetooth with one analog path
The A1 is a smaller powered Bluetooth system with a 3.5 mm input. Audioengine lists 15 W RMS per channel. It suits a desk or modest room where the source can provide analog line-level audio through a mini-jack cable. Choose it when the compact form factor and simple connection matter more than having RCA and optical options.
Edifier R1080BT: entry-level analog bookshelf option
The R1080BT documentation lists Bluetooth 5.1, Line In and 3.5 mm AUX, with 24 W RMS total. It is a practical candidate for a computer, phone adapter or other analog source. Because product specifications can differ by market, verify the exact regional page and rear-panel labeling before purchase.
Edifier e25HD: choose it for optical plus AUX
The e25HD lists a Bluetooth receiver with LDAC, optical input and AUX, plus 74 W RMS total. Its optical input can simplify connection to a television or another device that provides digital optical output. Confirm the television’s output format and the speaker’s supported settings; optical is a digital connection, unlike the analog AUX input.

Audioengine B2: a single-speaker alternative
The B2 is a powered single speaker with Bluetooth aptX and a 3.5 mm input. It is described for turntables, tape decks and other analog sources. Its one-box design can be convenient when you do not want to position or wire a stereo pair. It should be considered a different listening layout, not a direct substitute for a two-speaker bookshelf system.
Connecting common sources
Computer or phone with a headphone/line output
- Confirm that the speaker has a 3.5 mm input, or use an appropriate 3.5 mm-to-RCA cable when the speaker offers RCA.
- Set the computer or phone output to the connected jack and begin playback at a moderate volume.
- Raise the source and speaker levels gradually to avoid an unexpected loud signal.
You can instead pair over Bluetooth when the source and speaker support it. Keep the cable connected only if the speaker’s input-selection behavior allows you to switch predictably between wired and wireless sources.
Television with optical output
- Check whether the speaker has an optical input. The e25HD lists one; the A5+ documentation lists analog inputs instead.
- If the speaker accepts only analog audio, add an external optical-to-analog digital-to-analog converter (DAC).
- Connect the TV’s optical output to the DAC, then connect the DAC’s analog output to the speaker’s RCA or 3.5 mm input.
- Set the TV’s digital-audio output to a format the DAC accepts, commonly PCM/stereo when specified by the equipment.
A DAC is not a universal accessory. It is needed only when the source is digital and the speaker lacks a compatible digital input.
Recommended Free Tools
Turntable
Determine whether the turntable has a built-in phono preamp. A turntable with a line-level output can connect to an analog speaker input. A turntable without a preamp needs a phono preamp before the speaker; connecting the cartridge-level signal directly will not provide the correct level or equalization. The B2 is specifically described for turntables and other analog sources, but the same line-level requirement applies to any powered speaker.
RCA-equipped component
Use the component’s left and right line outputs with the speaker’s RCA L/R input, observing channel colors. If the source provides only a single digital output, use the matching digital input or a converter rather than an improvised cable.
When a Bluetooth receiver is the better purchase
If you already own a functioning amplifier and passive speakers, you may not need new Bluetooth speakers. A Bluetooth receiver normally receives wireless audio and sends it out through a wired connection to an amplifier or powered speaker. Edifier Support states: “Most Bluetooth receivers have Bluetooth input only, meaning you can stream from your audio device to the receiver and it will output the sound through a wired connection.” The support article, dated March 9, 2022, also notes that Bluetooth output is uncommon.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Before buying a receiver, verify three points:
- Its output connector and signal level match an available amplifier input.
- Your amplifier can drive the speakers’ impedance and power requirements.
- The receiver is intended to output audio over its wired port; do not assume it can transmit Bluetooth audio onward to another Bluetooth speaker.
A receiver adds wireless input to an existing system. It does not turn passive speakers into powered speakers by itself; the amplifier remains necessary.

Common compatibility failures and fixes
The TV has no sound through an analog speaker
The TV may be outputting optical digital audio while the speaker expects analog RCA or 3.5 mm. Use an optical-to-analog DAC, then select the correct TV output mode and speaker input.
The turntable is extremely quiet or distorted
The turntable likely lacks a phono preamp, or its built-in preamp is disabled. Add or enable the required phono stage before the powered speaker.
A cable fits physically but produces no audio
Connector shape does not guarantee electrical compatibility. Check that the source is an audio output, that the speaker jack is an input, and that the cable is wired for stereo line-level use rather than a different signal type.
Bluetooth pairs but playback remains silent
Confirm that the speaker is switched to its Bluetooth input, that the source selected the speaker as its active output, and that no second device has taken the connection. Raise both device and speaker volume after confirming the correct input.

A practical buying checklist
- Write down every source you will connect and its output: Bluetooth, 3.5 mm, RCA, optical or another format.
- Choose a powered/active system unless you already have a correctly matched amplifier for passive speakers.
- Confirm whether you want a stereo pair or a single enclosure.
- Verify the exact wired inputs on the current regional model page.
- Check whether a turntable needs a phono preamp or whether a TV needs an optical-to-analog DAC.
- Use wattage, response range, Bluetooth version and codec as specification filters, not as independent sound-quality scores.
- Confirm mains-power requirements, placement space and the included speaker-to-speaker cable where applicable.
- Check current price, stock and regional availability separately; those details are not established by the specifications above.
Which one should you choose?
Choose the Audioengine A5+ Wireless when you need a powered stereo pair with both RCA and 3.5 mm analog inputs. Choose the Audioengine A1 for a smaller powered setup with a simple 3.5 mm connection. Choose the Edifier R1080BT when an entry-level bookshelf format with Line In and AUX meets your sources. Choose the Edifier e25HD when optical input is a deciding requirement alongside AUX. Choose the Audioengine B2 when a single powered enclosure is preferable and your source is Bluetooth or 3.5 mm analog. If you already own an amplifier and passive speakers, evaluate a compatible Bluetooth receiver instead of replacing the speakers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are wired Bluetooth speakers the same as passive Bluetooth speakers?
Usually no. The models in this guide are powered systems with built-in amplification. Passive speakers still require a separate amplifier, even if a Bluetooth receiver is added.
Do I need a DAC for every TV connection?
No. You need an optical-to-analog DAC only when the TV outputs digital optical audio and the speaker has no compatible optical input. A speaker such as the e25HD lists optical; a speaker with only analog inputs needs conversion.
Can a Bluetooth receiver send audio wirelessly to any Bluetooth speaker?
Usually not. Most receivers accept Bluetooth input and send audio out through a cable. Confirm the receiver’s documented output function before buying.
Does more RMS power guarantee better sound?
No. RMS figures are useful for comparing the manufacturer’s stated output class, but they do not establish sound quality or maximum clean volume across different models.
