Microsoft PowerToys Run is the best replacement for Win+R for most Windows users. It is free, open source, documented by Microsoft, and launches applications, files, folders, calculator functions, and system commands from a keyboard-first search box. Press Alt+Space (the default shortcut), type what you need, and press Enter. PowerToys must be running and Run must be enabled.
Choose Flow Launcher if plugins and visual customization are your priority, Listary if you work heavily in File Explorer and Open/Save dialogs, or Wox v2 if one launcher must work across Windows, macOS, and Linux. Raycast for Windows is worth watching, but the cited September 17, 2025 report describes it as a beta distributed through an invitation waitlist, so it is not a dependable primary recommendation until access is confirmed.

All five tools can reduce dependence on the Run dialog, but they do not solve exactly the same problem. A launcher can be a fast application switcher, a file index, a command palette, an Explorer enhancement, or a cross-platform control surface. Decide which of those jobs matters most before judging search speed or the number of plugins.
What an app launcher does that Win+R does not
The Run dialog executes a known command. That is useful for paths such as cmd, ms-settings:, or an exact executable name, but it offers little discovery: you need to remember the command or type a complete path. Modern launchers add an indexed search layer. They can match an installed app from a few letters, find a deeply nested document, perform arithmetic, recall clipboard content, run a shell action, or hand a query to a plugin.

The keyboard flow is broadly the same: assign a global hotkey, type a query, inspect ranked results, and press Enter. The differences are in what gets indexed, how results are ranked, whether commands use prefixes, and whether the launcher can appear inside another Windows surface such as an Open dialog.
Speed is a workflow property, not a published benchmark
The supplied product documentation does not provide comparable laboratory launch-time, memory-use, or adoption figures. Treat “fast” as a description of reduced interaction: a shortcut, a short query and one selection. Indexing scope, disk speed, the number of plugins and whether a result is already cached all affect the experience, so published claims should not be read as a universal speed ranking.
Microsoft PowerToys Run: the safest default
Microsoft describes PowerToys Run as “a quick launcher for Windows power users that provides instant access to applications, files, calculator functions, and system commands without sacrificing performance.” It is a free, open-source, modular component of PowerToys with a documented plugin model. For a Windows-only user who wants one maintained tool with broad built-in coverage, that combination makes it the strongest default.
Install and enable it
- Install Microsoft PowerToys using the distribution method appropriate for your Windows installation.
- Open PowerToys Settings and select PowerToys Run in the left navigation.
- Turn on the Enable PowerToys Run control.
- Confirm the activation shortcut. The default is Alt+Space; change it if another application already owns that combination.
- Leave PowerToys running in the background. If it is closed, the launcher and its hotkey are unavailable.
- Press the shortcut, type an application or command, and press Enter. Use the settings page to adjust the launcher and its plugins rather than assuming the defaults are permanent.

This breadth is the reason to start with PowerToys Run: many common launcher jobs are covered before you install anything else. Its trade-off is architectural rather than functional: it is a Windows launcher inside the larger PowerToys process, so you must keep that background component enabled.

Flow Launcher: best when plugins and customization come first
Flow Launcher is a free, open-source Windows launcher aimed at keyboard-driven users. It launches installed applications, finds files and folders, runs system commands, searches settings, calculates expressions and extends its command set through built-in and community plugins. A plugin store, command prefixes, appearance controls and shortcut customization let you shape the search box around a particular workflow.
Indexing choices
Flow Launcher does not provide an entirely separate indexing system. It can use the Windows Search indexer or integrate with Everything. That choice matters when file results are your main reason for installing it: Windows Search and Everything have different index scopes and update behavior. Configure the indexer before judging missing files, and ensure the folders you expect are included in that index.
A practical first setup
- Install Flow Launcher and open its settings.
- Choose a global shortcut that does not conflict with PowerToys, your browser or accessibility software.
- Select Windows Search or Everything for file indexing, then verify the locations you need are indexed.
- Browse the plugin store and enable only the plugins you will use. Each additional plugin can add commands but also adds another result source to rank.
- Learn the prefixes shown by your installed plugins. Prefixes separate a web search, shell command or calculator expression from an application query.
- Use the appearance and result-order settings to put your most frequent actions first.
Flow is the better choice than PowerToys Run when the launcher itself is a platform you want to customize. It is less compelling if you want a turnkey file index and do not want to choose or maintain an indexer.

Listary’s distinguishing feature is that the search box follows you into Windows file-management surfaces. In File Explorer, and in Open or Save dialogs, typing can locate files and folders directly instead of forcing you to navigate a tree. It also launches applications, executes system commands, performs keyword web searches, and supports custom commands and actions.

Why the integration changes the decision
A standalone launcher starts from a global hotkey. Listary addresses the moment after an application is already open, when you need to attach a file, choose an export folder or move to a known directory. That reduces context switching for developers, editors, designers and anyone who handles many files. If your work rarely touches Explorer or file dialogs, its main advantage is less relevant and a general launcher may be simpler.
Installation and command design
- Install Listary through WinGet or the vendor’s download.
- Test it in an Explorer window and in an Open/Save dialog before changing other launcher shortcuts.
- Create custom commands only for repeated paths or actions. Give each a distinctive keyword so it does not compete with ordinary file names.
- Add keyword web searches when a short term should always be sent to a particular search provider or site.
- Keep a separate global launcher if you also need calculator, process or broad system-command functions; Listary’s strength is the file context.
Wox v2: the clearest cross-platform choice
Wox v2 is a rewrite of the earlier Windows launcher family and has stable 2026 releases for Windows, macOS and Linux. Its comparison material describes Flow Launcher as a Windows launcher in the Wox v1 family; Wox v2 is the separate cross-platform direction. Choose it when the same launcher concept must travel between operating systems rather than when Windows-only integration is the sole objective.

Wox documents application launching and window switching, local file search, clipboard recall, calculator and conversion, web search, folders and URLs, notes, screenshots, timers, dictation, window layouts, bookmarks, shell and system commands, themes, plugin management, hotkeys and cloud sync. A plugin store and file indexing support let you expand beyond the core command set.

- Install the Wox v2 build for each operating system you use.
- Assign a familiar hotkey on every machine, checking for conflicts with that platform’s global shortcuts.
- Enable file indexing only for locations you actually need; confirm that removable or network locations behave as expected on each system.
- Install plugins that have a clear cross-platform purpose first, then add platform-specific commands separately.
- Test clipboard, shell and window-management actions on each OS instead of assuming a Windows command translates unchanged to macOS or Linux.
Wox is the strongest fit for a mixed-OS household or development environment. A Windows-only user who values native Windows settings search or Explorer behavior may find PowerToys Run, Flow Launcher or Listary more direct.

Raycast for Windows: promising, but verify access
The cited Windows Central report dated September 17, 2025 describes Raycast for Windows as a keyboard-driven launcher with app, document and file search, clipboard history, calculator, snippets, window management, extensions and AI features. The same report says the Windows build was in beta and distributed through an invitation waitlist.
That availability status is more important than the feature list when choosing a replacement today. Check whether invitations are open and whether the build supports your Windows version before redesigning your workflow around it. If access is uncertain, install a generally available launcher first and treat Raycast as an additional experiment rather than your only way to start applications.

Do not install several launchers on the same shortcut
Running multiple launchers is possible, but assigning the same hotkey creates conflicts and makes troubleshooting ambiguous. Give each tool a distinct shortcut, or disable one while evaluating another. Keep only one primary app-search launcher until you know which result ranking and indexing behavior you prefer.

Index only what you need
File search depends on an index. Add the folders you regularly search and exclude locations that should not appear in quick results. For Flow Launcher, remember that Windows Search or Everything supplies the index; a missing result may be an index configuration issue rather than a launcher defect. Wox and PowerToys also expose file-search behavior through their own settings and plugins, so verify scope after installation.
Review plugins as extensions, not decorations
A plugin can add a shell command, web query, clipboard provider or automation action. Install from the launcher’s documented store or source, read the permissions and remove plugins you no longer need. More plugins increase capability but can also make results noisier and make it harder to identify which component handled a query.
Keep the background component available
PowerToys Run works only while PowerToys is running and Run is enabled. Other launchers likewise require their background process or startup entry for a global hotkey. If a launcher disappears after reboot, check its startup setting before reinstalling it.
Troubleshooting a launcher that does not replace Win+R cleanly
The hotkey does nothing
- Confirm the launcher process is running.
- Check that the feature is enabled in its settings.
- Choose a different shortcut if another application or utility has claimed the combination.
- Test the launcher’s own menu or taskbar entry to separate a hotkey problem from a startup problem.
An application is missing from results
- Search the exact name and its publisher name.
- Restart or refresh the application index.
- For Flow Launcher, verify that Windows Search or Everything includes the application location.
- For a portable app, add its folder to the relevant index or create a custom command.
Files are missing or stale
- Confirm the folder is included in the index and is accessible while the indexer runs.
- Allow time for a newly created or moved file to be indexed.
- Check whether a network, removable or protected location is supported by the chosen indexer.
- Use Listary in Explorer or a direct path when the immediate need is a file-dialog operation.
Results are noisy
- Disable plugins that you do not use.
- Use command prefixes where available to target a calculator, web search or shell action.
- Reduce indexed folders and adjust result ordering.
- Reserve separate hotkeys for separate launchers instead of asking several tools to rank the same query.
Commands fail after moving from Run
A launcher may pass a command through a plugin or shell with different quoting and privilege behavior than the Run dialog. Try the command in the launcher’s documented shell feature, quote paths containing spaces, and use an elevated terminal separately when administrator rights are required. Do not assume that a Run-dialog URI or system command has identical behavior in every plugin.

- Write down the five actions you use most often with Win+R: applications, folders, settings, calculations or commands.
- Install only one launcher and assign a shortcut that is easy to press but not already in use.
- Test those five actions, plus one file search and one system command.
- Configure indexing and disable irrelevant plugins before adding custom commands.
- Use the launcher for a week while keeping Win+R available as a fallback.
- Only then decide whether a second specialist, such as Listary for file dialogs or Wox for another operating system, adds value.
For most Windows PCs, that process ends with PowerToys Run as the daily replacement. Flow Launcher is the better endpoint for a plugin-centric setup, Listary for file-centric work, and Wox v2 when platform portability outweighs Windows-specific integration.
