For the highest repeatable gaming performance from an RTX laptop, connect the AC adapter, set Windows to Best performance, assign each game to High performance in Settings > System > Display > Graphics, and use NVIDIA notebook Performance mode when extra fan noise and heat are acceptable. Leave Advanced Optimus on Automatic Select unless you specifically need the direct-GPU display path, then tune DLSS, Reflex and frame limits inside each game.

These settings increase power use and can raise temperatures. There is no universal FPS gain: results depend on the RTX tier and configured wattage, cooling, firmware, display wiring, resolution, game engine and driver version. Use the sequence below as a dependable baseline, then measure the games you actually play.

The recommended baseline at a glance

Area Recommended setting When to choose something else
Power source AC adapter connected Use battery modes only when mobility matters more than sustained performance.
Windows power mode Best performance Balanced for lower heat and noise; Best power efficiency for battery life.
Per-game GPU High performance in Windows Graphics Use the integrated GPU for light games or applications where battery life is the priority.
NVIDIA notebook power mode Performance Balanced or Quiet when acoustics and temperature matter more than peak speed; this option appears only on supported notebooks.
Advanced Optimus Automatic Select Optimus favors battery life; NVIDIA GPU only keeps the internal panel on the discrete GPU when supported.
Driver profiles Per-game Program Settings Keep global settings near defaults unless a specific title needs an override.
Upscaling and latency DLSS mode and Reflex selected in the game Choices depend on the title, panel resolution and whether image quality or latency is the priority.

Why power and display routing come first

A mobile RTX GPU cannot sustain its desktop-like performance without enough electrical and thermal headroom. Windows Best performance and NVIDIA Performance mode both favor responsiveness over efficiency. Microsoft describes Best performance as the mode that increases power consumption; on a laptop it can drain the battery faster and make the device run warmer. NVIDIA’s notebook reference describes Performance mode as providing the highest gaming performance when fan noise is not an issue.

Those modes do not create additional GPU wattage beyond the limit set by the laptop manufacturer. They reduce power-saving behavior and allow the system to hold higher clocks when cooling and the adapter permit it. A thin laptop with a low configured GPU power limit can therefore perform below a thicker model using the same RTX model number.

Alongside the suite of features from NVIDIA G-SYNC and NVIDIA Advanced Optimus, you're guaranteed that whatever's on-screen is a distinct viewing delight.

The display connection also matters. In a hybrid design, the discrete GPU may render a frame while the integrated GPU drives the internal panel. Advanced Optimus can switch the panel to the discrete GPU, removing that copy path and enabling features such as G-SYNC or higher refresh options on models wired for them. The benefit is hardware-dependent, and switching can briefly freeze the screen.

Step 1: set Windows power mode before launching a game

  1. Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
  2. Under Power mode, choose Best performance.
  3. Connect the laptop’s specified AC adapter. A USB-C charger that does not meet the machine’s required wattage may still leave the system in a reduced-performance state.
  4. Start the game only after the mode has changed. Windows applies the policy system-wide, so close and reopen a title if it was already running.

Use Balanced when you want a quieter compromise, or Best power efficiency for unplugged play and ordinary work. Microsoft defines these as the three alternatives to Best performance. On battery, the highest mode consumes charge quickly and may still be limited by firmware, so a short performance burst is the only sensible reason to use it.

Step 2: force each game to the RTX GPU in Windows

On modern Windows systems, the operating system owns per-application GPU assignment. NVIDIA notes that since Windows 10 version 20H1, Windows can override the older preferred-graphics-processor choice in NVIDIA Control Panel. Set the executable in Windows instead of relying on a legacy global preference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Under the app list, select the game. If it is missing, choose Browse, locate the game’s actual .exe file, and add it.
  3. Select the game, click Options, choose High performance, and confirm that Windows identifies the RTX GPU in the description.
  4. Click Save, then fully exit and restart the game. Some launchers start a separate executable, so repeat the process for the executable that renders the game rather than only the launcher.

Do not assign every application to High performance. Browsers, video players and office software usually benefit more from the integrated GPU’s lower power draw. Keep a title on the integrated GPU only when you have verified that its performance is sufficient and battery life is the goal.

Step 3: choose an Advanced Optimus mode

Advanced Optimus is a hardware and firmware feature, not a universal Windows switch. If your laptop supports it, the available control may be in NVIDIA Control Panel, the NVIDIA app or the manufacturer’s utility. The labels and restrictions vary by model.

Mode Display path and behavior Best use
Automatic Select Lets supported applications trigger a switch between integrated and discrete display paths. Best general default; balances battery life and gaming performance.
Optimus Keeps the internal panel on integrated graphics and uses hybrid rendering. Travel, battery operation and quieter everyday use.
NVIDIA GPU only Keeps the internal display connected to the discrete GPU when the laptop supports that path. Direct-display latency, G-SYNC or the highest supported internal refresh options.

Changing modes can freeze the display for several seconds while the graphics stack reinitializes. NVIDIA documents cases in which a switch may not occur: the laptop is running on battery, an external monitor or eGPU is connected, a DirectX 9 application is open, or firmware does not permit the requested path. Close games and older 3D applications before switching, reconnect the AC adapter, and disconnect external displays if the control is unavailable.

NVIDIA GPU only is not automatically faster in every workload. It increases discrete-GPU activity and power use, and it may shorten battery life. Start with Automatic Select; use GPU only when your model’s direct-display features solve a real limitation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: configure NVIDIA notebook power mode

  1. Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. Open Manage Power and Display Settings or, on some driver versions, Manage Power Settings.
  3. Set notebook Power Mode to Performance for plugged-in gaming when fan noise is acceptable.
  4. Choose Balanced for a quieter compromise or Quiet when reduced fan noise is the priority.

The control is exposed only on supported notebooks, and an OEM performance utility may apply a separate system profile. If two utilities offer performance, fan or thermal modes, avoid contradictory profiles: select the laptop maker’s highest-performance profile for gaming, then verify that NVIDIA is not set to Quiet.

Step 5: use per-game NVIDIA settings instead of aggressive global overrides

In NVIDIA Control Panel, open Manage 3D settings and select the Program Settings tab. Add the game’s executable, then adjust only settings that address a known need. The NVIDIA app also exposes per-game optimization and driver controls on supported systems. Driver version, GPU generation and game engine determine which options appear.

Control area Practical starting point Reason to change it
Power behavior Use the notebook Power Mode described above; avoid forcing the most aggressive behavior globally. A demanding title that repeatedly downclocks despite adequate cooling and AC power.
Latency Prefer the game’s NVIDIA Reflex option when available; otherwise test the driver’s latency control for that title. Competitive games where input-to-photon delay matters more than a small efficiency gain.
Frame-rate limit Set a cap in the game or driver when consistent frame pacing, temperature or battery life matters. Cap below the panel’s refresh rate to reduce heat, or use a title-specific cap to prevent runaway menus.
Vertical sync Follow the game’s display technology and your VRR/G-SYNC setup rather than applying one global rule. Use a title-specific change when you see tearing, judder or excess latency.
Image quality and texture filtering Keep quality-oriented defaults unless a game has a documented compatibility issue. Lower quality only when you have measured a meaningful performance need.

Global overrides are tempting because they appear to promise one-click speed, but they can hurt other games, interfere with Reflex or duplicate an in-game setting. Make one change at a time, record the original value, and keep the profile attached to the executable that needs it.

Step 6: enable Windows windowed-game optimization when appropriate

Windows 11 includes Optimizations for windowed games for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 titles running in windowed or borderless modes. Microsoft says the feature transitions eligible games to the flip model, which can reduce frame latency and enable features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Turn on Optimizations for windowed games under the default graphics settings, or select an individual game and apply the option where Windows offers a per-app control.
  3. Restart the game before judging the result.

Test it per title. A game can behave worse because of an overlay, an unusual presentation mode or an older engine. If stutter appears only after enabling the feature, turn it off for that executable and keep it enabled for compatible titles that improve.

What to do with Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling

On supported Windows 11 installations, Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling appears under Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings. It changes how GPU scheduling work is handled by the system and requires a compatible driver and GPU. It is not a guaranteed FPS switch.

Enable it, restart Windows, and compare the same game scene with the same resolution, graphics preset and frame cap. Keep it enabled if frame-time consistency or latency improves without new issues. Disable it and retest if you see stutter, crashes, capture problems or worse frame pacing. Because driver and game behavior change over time, treat this as a per-system experiment rather than a universal recommendation.

Step 7: keep Windows, drivers and firmware aligned

  • Install current Windows updates through Settings > Windows Update.
  • Use the laptop manufacturer’s support page or update utility for BIOS, chipset and system-firmware packages that apply to your exact model.
  • Use the NVIDIA app to install a current Game Ready driver for gaming or a Studio driver when content-creation stability is the priority. The app can also optimize supported games.
  • Restart after major driver, BIOS or graphics-stack changes before comparing performance.

NVIDIA’s Advanced Optimus guidance for a documented Windows 11 24H2 scenario calls for update KB5043178 with R565-branch drivers. That pairing is specific to the documented release scenario; verify current Windows and driver requirements before applying it to another release or laptop.

Firmware can change available Optimus modes, panel behavior and power limits. If a control disappears after an update, check the manufacturer’s release notes and restore the recommended OEM graphics mode before assuming the GPU is defective.

Step 8: tune DLSS, Reflex and frame rate in the game

DLSS

DLSS renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the image for the panel. Start with Quality when detail is important, move to Balanced for a middle ground, and use Performance when the GPU is the limiting factor at a high output resolution. The lower internal resolution used by Performance can make fine details and distant objects look softer. Judge the result in motion, not only from a still screenshot.

NVIDIA Reflex

Turn on Reflex when the game provides it, especially for competitive play. It is an in-game latency feature and should be evaluated with the title’s own latency indicator or a repeatable input test. Do not stack random driver latency overrides on top of Reflex without measuring; the game’s implementation is the primary control.

Frame generation and caps

Some RTX games also offer Frame Generation. Its usefulness depends on the game, base frame rate, latency target and visual tolerance; it is not a substitute for adequate native rendering performance. If frame pacing or heat is the problem, use the game’s frame limiter. A stable cap often feels better than an uncapped rate that repeatedly hits a thermal or power limit.

Thermal management without chasing unsafe settings

Best performance and NVIDIA Performance mode increase heat and fan activity by design. Place the laptop on a hard, unobstructed surface, keep intake and exhaust vents clear, and use a stand or cooling pad only if it improves airflow in your setup. Do not use a soft bed or cushion that blocks the intake.

When temperatures or noise are unacceptable, reduce the workload before changing obscure driver flags. Lower the frame cap, select DLSS Balanced, reduce the most GPU-intensive in-game settings, or choose Windows Balanced mode. These changes are reversible and easier to verify than a collection of global overrides. A laptop that repeatedly reaches a thermal limit may deliver lower sustained FPS in Best performance than in a capped profile that stays below the limit.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The game still uses the integrated GPU

  1. Confirm that the game’s rendering executable, not only its launcher, is listed in Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Set that executable to High performance, save, and restart the game.
  3. Reconnect AC power and close external-monitor or eGPU connections while testing Advanced Optimus.
  4. Check the game’s own adapter or display setting; some titles select a GPU only at startup.
  5. Update Windows, the NVIDIA driver and the laptop firmware, then repeat the assignment.

NVIDIA GPU only is missing or will not switch

The laptop may not have a hardware MUX, the firmware may hide the option, or a battery, external-monitor, eGPU or DirectX 9 condition may block switching. Return to Automatic Select, disconnect external displays, close 3D applications, connect AC power and check the OEM utility. If the option never appears, use Windows High performance assignment and the laptop’s supported hybrid mode.

FPS is high at first and falls later

Check whether the decline coincides with rising chassis temperature, adapter limits or a power-mode change. Use a frame cap, improve airflow, verify that the correct AC adapter is connected, and compare Balanced with Performance. If Balanced produces steadier sustained results, the uncapped workload is likely encountering a thermal or power limit rather than a graphics-setting problem.

Borderless mode stutters

Test Windows Optimizations for windowed games, restart the title, and compare exclusive fullscreen if the game supports it. Disable the optimization for that executable if stutter worsens. Also test overlays individually; multiple capture, chat or monitoring overlays can alter frame pacing.

The laptop is too loud

Switch NVIDIA Power Mode from Performance to Balanced, cap FPS, and use DLSS Quality or Balanced before lowering every quality setting. Quiet mode reduces fan noise but can lower sustained performance. Record the change so you can restore Performance for a demanding session.

How to verify that a change helped

Use a repeatable test rather than a single peak-FPS reading. Select one saved location or benchmark sequence, keep resolution, graphics preset, DLSS mode, Reflex state and frame cap identical, and run the scene long enough to expose sustained behavior. Record average FPS, frame-time consistency, GPU utilization, clock behavior, temperature and whether the system is plugged in.

Compare one variable at a time: Windows power mode, GPU assignment, Optimus mode, a per-game driver option or an in-game feature. Official guidance for these controls defines their behavior and trade-offs, not a universal FPS percentage or temperature reduction. Your laptop’s GPU wattage, cooling design, firmware and display path determine the measured result.

Profiles for common priorities

Priority Windows NVIDIA and display In-game approach
Maximum plugged-in FPS AC power and Best performance; game set to High performance. Performance notebook mode; Automatic Select or NVIDIA GPU only if direct display is supported and useful. DLSS Balanced or Performance when needed; Reflex on; use a cap only for stability.
Competitive latency AC power and Best performance. Use the direct-display path and G-SYNC only if the laptop supports them; configure latency per game. Reflex on; choose the DLSS mode that maintains a high, stable base rate; cap consistently if required by the display.
Quiet gaming Balanced or Best performance with a deliberate frame cap. Balanced or Quiet notebook mode; Automatic Select or Optimus. DLSS Quality or Balanced; lower the settings that create the most heat.
Battery play Balanced or Best power efficiency. Optimus where available; avoid NVIDIA GPU only. Use a lower frame cap and DLSS Quality or Balanced; expect shorter sessions with demanding games.

What to compare when choosing or evaluating an RTX laptop

  • Sustained plugged-in performance: look beyond the RTX model name and check the configured GPU power limit and cooling design.
  • Battery life and acoustics: aggressive modes trade both for performance.
  • Display routing: identify whether the internal panel uses Optimus, Advanced Optimus or a MUX/direct-GPU path.
  • Panel capability: verify refresh rate, variable-refresh support and G-SYNC compatibility on the internal display.
  • Software maturity: BIOS, chipset, Windows and NVIDIA driver support can affect available modes.
  • Game features: DLSS, Frame Generation and Reflex support varies by title and changes how much benefit an RTX GPU can deliver.

Use these axes instead of assuming that two laptops with the same RTX label will deliver identical FPS. The documented controls can remove avoidable limits, but they cannot overcome a lower power limit, inadequate cooling or a game engine that is limited elsewhere.
