Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo use a 180Hz gaming monitor at its intended refresh rate, select the monitor in Windows’ Advanced display settings and choose the highest rate offered at the resolution you want. Then check the monitor’s on-screen settings and your game. The 180Hz label alone does not confirm that Windows, the connection, graphics output, or a particular game is running at 180Hz.
Set the monitor’s refresh rate in Windows
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- Select the 180Hz monitor if you have more than one display connected.
- Under the refresh-rate control, choose the highest rate available while keeping your intended resolution.
- Check the display information panel to confirm both the current resolution and refresh rate.
Refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), describes how many times per second a display updates. A 60Hz display, for example, updates 60 times per second, according to Microsoft’s Windows refresh-rate guidance. The number is a mode description, not proof that your setup or a game is currently delivering that rate.

Windows lists the modes available for the selected display and configuration. An asterisk next to a refresh rate means that rate does not support the current resolution; selecting it changes the resolution. If 180Hz is only available at a resolution you do not want, keep your preferred resolution rather than assuming the higher number is automatically the better choice.
Check the monitor and connection
Connect the monitor to a graphics output using a port and cable supported for your target resolution and refresh rate. A cable or adapter cannot overcome a limitation in the monitor’s input, graphics output, or device configuration. The connector name alone also does not establish which resolution-and-refresh combinations are available.
#1 Best Overall
- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Check the manual for your exact monitor for supported modes by input, any manufacturer-specific high-refresh or overclocked mode, and relevant on-screen display (OSD) options. There is no universal OSD preset or setting value that applies to every 180Hz monitor. Response-time or overdrive, color, shadow enhancement, and motion-blur-reduction controls vary by model; compare their effects on motion clarity and image artifacts rather than applying a one-size-fits-all recommendation.
Choose VRR and Windows 11 DRR based on how you use the display
Variable refresh rate (VRR)
VRR lets a compatible display dynamically adapt its refresh rate in supported games. In Advanced display, check the display information panel for VRR support. If it is supported, enable the compatible vendor path as applicable and test it in a game that supports VRR; Microsoft notes that many popular games use it automatically. Whether it helps depends on the monitor and the games you play.

Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR)
DRR is a separate Windows 11 feature, not another name for VRR. It requires a VRR-capable display and a refresh rate of at least 120Hz. Microsoft warns that DRR can limit the maximum refresh rate in some games. If a game runs below its expected maximum, turn DRR off and check the game again; see Microsoft’s DRR guidance.

HDR is optional; it does not set the monitor to 180Hz. An external HDR display needs HDR10 support and a compatible connection. Microsoft lists DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0 or higher, USB-C, and Thunderbolt among supported connection types, but the monitor and PC specifications determine the exact modes available. For HDR troubleshooting, Microsoft says: “If you’re using an HDMI connection and your display supports HDR over a DisplayPort connection, use DisplayPort instead to connect your PC and display.” This is conditional advice about HDR, not a universal recommendation for every 180Hz setup. See Microsoft’s HDR settings guidance.

If 180Hz is missing or a game runs slower
- 180Hz is not listed: Confirm the correct display is selected in Advanced display, then check the monitor manual and the specifications for the monitor input and graphics output for supported resolution-and-refresh combinations. A different connection path may expose different supported modes, but do not assume a particular cable is required without checking those specifications.
- 180Hz appears only with a different resolution: Windows marks rates that do not support the current resolution with an asterisk. Choose a supported combination that preserves the resolution you want.
- Windows shows a high rate but a game does not: Check the game’s own display settings and test VRR only if the display and game support it. On Windows 11, disable DRR if the game appears limited to a lower maximum.
- Picture quality changes with HDR: Confirm HDR support for both PC and display, then tune SDR content brightness if needed. For an HDMI-versus-DisplayPort change, follow the monitor’s HDR and mode specifications rather than assuming the result will be the same for every display.
