Start with Windows and Armoury Crate fully updated, use Performance mode as your battery default, reserve Turbo for demanding games while connected to the included 65W charger, and choose a stable 40 or 60 FPS cap instead of chasing an unstable 120 FPS. Silent mode is best for light games, emulation and streaming. Leave VRAM allocation at its default unless a particular game stutters or will not launch.
This guide covers the 2025 ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X, model RC73XA. If your handheld is the 2024 ROG Ally X, model RC72LA, the menus and recommendations can differ.

The recommended baseline
The ROG Xbox Ally X is a Windows 11 handheld with three Armoury Crate performance modes, per-game profiles and a 1080p 120Hz display. There is no single setting that is best for every title: a demanding AAA game, a lightweight indie game and a streamed game place very different demands on the processor, graphics hardware, battery and cooling system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse this order when setting up the device:
- Finish Windows Update, Microsoft Store updates and Xbox app updates.
- Install every offered BIOS, firmware, chipset and graphics package in Armoury Crate SE.
- Use Performance on battery until you know how a game behaves.
- Switch to Turbo for demanding games when the handheld is plugged into the 65W charger.
- Use Silent for light workloads or when battery life and low fan noise matter more than frame rate.
- Set a sustainable frame-rate target, normally 40 or 60 FPS for demanding games.
- Create a separate Armoury Crate profile for each game that needs different limits.
Update before changing performance settings
Driver and firmware changes can alter performance, compatibility and the available Armoury Crate controls. ASUS says updates from ASUS, Microsoft and AMD may improve performance, so tuning an unpatched installation can give misleading results.

Do not treat a registry edit, a security-feature change or a third-party debloat script as a required performance step. The documented setup does not require any of them, and removing Windows components can make later updates or Xbox features harder to repair.
Silent, Performance or Turbo?
Armoury Crate changes the handheld’s power behavior, not just a visual preset. The right mode depends on the power source, game load, desired frame rate, fan noise and acceptable battery runtime.
| Mode | Use it when | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Silent | Light games, emulation, streaming, video or maximum battery life | Lowest power use and fan noise, but reduced performance in graphically intense games |
| Performance | General battery play and as the initial profile for an unfamiliar game | Balanced performance and battery consumption |
| Turbo | Demanding games while connected to the 65W charger | Highest power budget and the best chance of sustaining high frame rates; more heat, fan noise and power draw |
Silent mode
ASUS describes Silent as a low-wattage mode that uses less power for better battery life with minimal fan noise, while warning that it will not provide maximum performance, especially in graphically intense AAA games. It is a good fit for 2D games, older titles, emulation, cloud gaming and remote play. If a game stutters in Silent, move that game to Performance before lowering other settings.

Performance mode
Performance is the practical battery starting point. ASUS characterizes it as the balance between performance and battery life. It is usually the first mode to try for a new game because it avoids Turbo’s extra drain while leaving more headroom than Silent. Keep it as your default profile on battery unless a particular title clearly benefits from another mode.
Turbo mode
Turbo is the full-power option. ASUS says AC power gives Turbo an additional boost, so use it with the included 65W charger for demanding games rather than expecting the same behavior from battery power. Turbo cannot create performance that a game engine or graphics setting does not allow; it simply gives the hardware a larger power budget and can increase heat and noise.
Use Default Game Profiles when they fit
Microsoft defines Default Game Profiles as per-game device settings for games sold through the Xbox Store on PC for the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. They can set TDP and FPS limits to balance stable performance and battery life. The first wave covered nearly 70 popular games, but coverage and recommendations can change as the software is updated.

Enable or disable the feature in the Armoury Crate Command Center Game Bar widget. A profile applies only while its game is focused, so it should not permanently force a low limit on the Windows desktop or another title. If a game’s automatic profile feels wrong, use the manual controls described below rather than changing global settings.

Manual per-game settings
Microsoft identifies manual per-game TDP and FPS configuration as the alternative to Game Profiles. Open the game’s profile in Armoury Crate, choose the operating mode and set the TDP and frame-rate limit that match the game’s workload and your power source. Save the profile, launch the game and test it for several minutes; then adjust one control at a time.
Choose a frame-rate target for the 1080p 120Hz panel
The display is 7 inches, 1080p and 120Hz. A 120Hz panel can show up to 120 refreshes per second, but the handheld does not need to render 120 frames per second in every game. A stable lower target usually feels smoother than a frame rate that repeatedly swings between high and low values.
| Target | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 40 FPS | Demanding AAA games that cannot hold 60 FPS | Much easier to sustain than 60 or 120 FPS, with lower power use; motion is less fluid than 60 FPS |
| 60 FPS | Games that can maintain it at 1080p or with modest settings reductions | Good responsiveness, but higher power and heat than 40 FPS |
| 120 FPS | Light esports, older or highly optimized games | Uses substantially more power and is rarely sustainable in modern AAA games on this class of handheld |
ASUS’s November 2025 changelog says the frame-rate limiter was adjusted from 45 to 40 FPS to align better with the 120Hz panel. That change makes 40 FPS a useful low target for games that cannot hold 60. The recommendation to prefer a stable 40 or 60 over a fluctuating 90–120 is an editorial judgment, not an ASUS guarantee or an independent benchmark.
How to decide between 40 and 60 FPS
- Start at 60 FPS in Performance mode. If frame pacing is uneven, lower the cap to 40 before raising the power mode.
- If 40 FPS is stable but 60 is not, keep 40 and reduce visual settings only if you need more responsiveness.
- Use 120 FPS only when the game can hold it without large dips and the extra battery drain is acceptable.
- Keep the cap consistent within a profile. Changing between uncapped, 60 and 40 during one session makes power and temperature behavior harder to judge.
Build an Armoury Crate profile for each game
Different engines, resolutions and power sources need different limits. A single global profile cannot account for all of them. Use the following procedure for a title that is not covered by a Default Game Profile:
- Open Armoury Crate SE and select the game from the library.
- Open that game’s profile settings.
- Choose Silent, Performance or Turbo according to whether you are on battery or AC power and how demanding the game is.
- Set a TDP limit and FPS cap in the profile or in the Command Center Game Bar widget.
- Launch the game, play a representative scene and watch for sustained stutter, excessive fan noise or rapid battery loss.
- Change one variable—mode, TDP, graphics quality or FPS cap—then test again.
Keep separate expectations for battery and AC operation. A profile that is comfortable on the 65W charger may drain the 80Wh battery too quickly, while a battery profile may leave performance unused when plugged in.

Should you change VRAM?
Usually, no. ASUS says VRAM reassignment is normally unnecessary on the ROG Xbox Ally X. Change it only when a specific VRAM-heavy game shows a reproducible symptom, such as stuttering associated with texture allocation or a failure to launch that points to insufficient graphics memory.
- Open Armoury Crate SE.
- Go to Settings > GPU Settings.
- Choose the required graphics-memory allocation.
- Restart the handheld. The change does not take effect until after reboot.
Do not increase VRAM simply because a larger number appears faster. Memory assigned to the GPU is no longer available to Windows and applications. If the game does not show the symptom that the change is intended to address, return to the default allocation.
Windows 11 settings that are worth using
Keep the Xbox-focused interface optional
The device ships with Windows 11 Home and offers direct access to the Xbox Full Screen Experience. Use that console-style launcher if it makes your library easier to reach, but it is not a requirement for higher frame rates. Standard Windows desktop mode remains useful for installing non-Xbox games, changing drivers and troubleshooting.
Prefer supported controls over system modifications
Use Windows Update, Microsoft Store updates and Armoury Crate’s Update Center as the supported maintenance path. Avoid disabling security features, deleting services or applying generic debloat scripts in pursuit of performance. Such changes can remove dependencies that the Xbox app, Windows Update or Armoury Crate needs, while the documented ASUS and Microsoft guidance does not require them.
Control background load through ordinary Windows tools
Before testing a demanding game, close downloads and applications that are actively using the CPU, GPU or network. If a game behaves differently after an update, restart Windows and test again before changing VRAM or applying a more aggressive power mode. This keeps the cause of a change identifiable.

- Game All Day with Upgraded Ergonomics. The ROG Ally X features a lightweight 1.49 lb chassis and redesigned ergonomics with taller, more substantial handgrips, refined macro keys, flat surface angles, and upgraded joysticks for a comfortable gaming experience.
- Use Performance as the battery baseline and move to Silent for light workloads.
- Cap demanding games at 40 or 60 FPS instead of leaving them uncapped.
- Use a per-game profile so a lightweight title does not inherit a high-power AAA setting.
- Keep Turbo for AC play whenever possible; it is designed as the full-power mode and increases consumption.
- When streaming through Xbox Cloud Gaming or Xbox Remote Play, favor Silent or Performance because the handheld is decoding a stream rather than rendering the entire game locally.
Battery savings should be judged by sustained play, not by a brief idle reading. Test the same game section with the same cap and brightness after each change.

Higher power modes generally exchange battery runtime and acoustics for performance. Turbo is therefore best treated as a plugged-in mode for demanding games, while Silent is the low-noise choice for lighter work. Keep the air inlets and exhaust clear, use the device on a hard surface and avoid covering the vents with fabric. If temperatures or fan noise become uncomfortable, first lower the FPS target or return from Turbo to Performance rather than immediately changing VRAM.
The included charger is rated at 65W. Both USB-C ports support DisplayPort 2.1 and Power Delivery 3.0; one is USB4. A compatible dock can provide power and an external display, but the dock and charger must support the handheld’s power requirements if you expect full-power operation.
Hardware facts that affect your settings
| Component | Specification | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 7-inch, 1080p, 120Hz | Supports 40, 60 and 120 FPS targets; stable frame pacing matters more than a permanently uncapped rate |
| Battery | 80Wh | Provides substantial capacity, but high-power modes and uncapped rendering still reduce runtime quickly |
| Charging | 65W charger included | Use AC power for Turbo’s intended operating conditions |
| Expansion | 512GB M.2 2280 SSD, upgradeable with an off-the-shelf drive | Storage capacity can be expanded without changing performance profiles |
| Card reader | UHS-II microSD | Useful for additional game storage; installation and loading behavior still depend on the game |
| Ports | USB4 plus a second USB-C port, each with DisplayPort 2.1 and Power Delivery 3.0 | Supports charging, displays and compatible peripherals; bandwidth and power depend on the accessory |
Troubleshooting by symptom
The game stutters in Turbo
- Confirm Windows, Xbox and Armoury Crate updates are installed.
- Check whether the game is actually holding the selected FPS target rather than oscillating around it.
- Try a fixed 60 FPS cap, then 40 FPS if 60 remains unstable.
- If the issue occurs only with high-resolution textures or another VRAM-heavy setting, test the documented GPU Settings change and reboot.
The game will not launch
- Install pending Microsoft Store and Xbox updates and restart.
- Verify the game profile is not applying an unusually restrictive TDP or FPS setting.
- Only then consider whether the title is showing the VRAM symptom ASUS describes; change allocation sparingly and reboot.
Battery drains faster than expected
- Check that Turbo is not active while on battery.
- Apply a 40 or 60 FPS cap and use Performance or Silent.
- Close active downloads and background applications.
- Compare runtime using the same game scene and brightness; do not compare an idle desktop reading with gameplay.
Fans are too loud
- Move from Turbo to Performance if the game remains playable.
- Lower the FPS target before lowering every graphics option.
- Use Silent for lighter games, emulation or streaming and keep vents unobstructed.
Practical starting profiles
| Workload | Power source | Mode | FPS target | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Demanding modern AAA game | Battery | Performance | 40 or 60, whichever is stable | Balances sustained play with responsiveness |
| Demanding modern AAA game | 65W AC | Turbo | 60 if sustainable; otherwise 40 | Uses the full-power mode without requiring an unstable 120 FPS |
| Indie or older game | Battery | Silent | 40 or 60 | Reduces power and noise when the workload is light |
| Light esports title | Battery | Performance | 60 or 120 if it remains stable | Provides responsiveness while retaining a battery option |
| Cloud gaming or Remote Play | Battery | Silent or Performance | 60 | The handheld is decoding a stream rather than rendering the game locally |
These are starting points, not benchmark results. Adjust them per game after observing frame pacing, heat, noise and battery use.
What to leave at default
- Do not reassign VRAM without a game-specific symptom.
- Do not run Turbo on battery merely because it is available.
- Do not assume a 120Hz panel means every game should target 120 FPS.
- Do not apply registry edits, security-feature changes or debloat scripts as mandatory tuning.
- Do not reuse one profile across every game, resolution and power source.
Maintenance and changing software behavior
Armoury Crate menus, driver versions, Default Game Profile coverage, Windows handheld features and product firmware can change. Recheck the labels after major updates rather than relying on an old screenshot or remembered menu location. ASUS’s documented performance descriptions and Microsoft’s Game Profile behavior are the basis for the settings above; no independent hands-on benchmark is being claimed here.
