The best Windows settings depend on whether your handheld is running from its battery, connected to power, getting too hot, or being used like a controller-first console. Start with Balanced for general play, switch to Best power efficiency when runtime matters, and use Best performance only when the extra power draw and heat are acceptable. Then enable graphics and full-screen features only when your Windows version, display, game and hardware support them.
Choose a profile before changing individual settings
There is no single best configuration for every Windows handheld. Windows power controls interact with the device maker’s own performance, fan and thermal profiles, while game engines and display capabilities determine whether graphics features work. Use the following as a starting decision guide rather than a permanent universal preset.

| Situation | Power mode | Graphics and display approach | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playing unplugged | Best power efficiency or Balanced | Moderate brightness; leave HDR off on battery unless image quality is more important than runtime | Background activity, screen timeout and heat |
| Playing while plugged in | Best performance when its extra consumption is acceptable | Use supported windowed-game optimization, HDR or other eligible features | Warmth, fan noise and the charger’s ability to sustain the load |
| A game feels delayed in borderless mode | Keep the mode that fits your power situation | Test Optimizations for windowed games, then restart the title | The feature applies only to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games |
| You want a console-like startup | Use the mode that matches your battery or plugged-in session | Consider Xbox mode on Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, where available | Supported market, installed home app and full-screen app compatibility |
| The handheld is hot or draining quickly | Move from Best performance to Balanced or Best power efficiency | Reduce brightness and unnecessary background work | Windows settings may be overridden or supplemented by the manufacturer’s control app |
Set Windows power mode for the session
Where to find it
In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery. The available power choices can vary with the hardware and the manufacturer. When Windows exposes them, the three modes are Best power efficiency, Balanced and Best performance.
What each mode changes
- Best power efficiency prioritizes lower consumption and limits background activity. It is the sensible first choice for an unplugged session when preserving runtime matters more than extracting every available frame.
- Balanced is the practical default for mixed use. It avoids committing to the highest power draw while leaving Windows enough headroom for games and ordinary desktop work.
- Best performance maximizes performance, but Microsoft warns that it uses more power and can make a laptop warmer. On a handheld, that can mean faster battery depletion, more fan noise and a warmer grip. Use it when plugged in, or when you have deliberately accepted those costs for a demanding game.
Changing Windows’ mode does not necessarily replace a vendor’s own silent, balanced, turbo or thermal profile. If the handheld has a separate control application, check which profile it is applying before concluding that a Windows change had no effect. Model-specific behavior is not consistent enough to prescribe one vendor profile for every device.

Use Energy Saver, brightness and timers to extend unplugged play
Energy Saver
Windows 11 also provides Energy Saver and efficiency recommendations under Settings > System > Power & battery. Microsoft describes Best Power Efficiency as limiting background activity; the exact recommendations Windows shows depend on the device’s capabilities and whether it is plugged in. Review the suggestions that appear on your machine instead of assuming every handheld receives the same list.
Brightness
The display is a continuous battery load. Lower brightness to the lowest level that remains comfortable in the game’s lighting, especially indoors or at night. This is a direct battery-versus-visibility decision: a brighter panel may be easier to see in a bright room, but it consumes more energy.
Screen-off and sleep timers
Power & battery also exposes screen-off and sleep timers. A shorter screen-off timer protects the battery when you leave the handheld unattended. During an active game, these timers normally do not trigger, but they matter when the device is sitting at a menu, downloading content or being used as a desktop. Set a timeout that prevents accidental drain without interrupting the way you pause and resume games.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThese controls are optimization levers, not guaranteed battery-life percentages. Windows does not provide a universal runtime gain for a particular timer, brightness level or Energy Saver choice because game load, display technology, battery condition and firmware differ.
Enable Optimizations for windowed games selectively
Supported games and modes
Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games targets compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-window mode. It moves eligible titles to a newer presentation model that can reduce frame latency and can make features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate available on supported displays.

Turn it on and restart the game
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Find the control for Optimizations for windowed games and enable it.
- Close and restart the affected game. The change does not apply reliably to a title that was already running.
When to use a per-game exception
The setting is not a universal frame-rate or latency fix. It does not target every graphics API, every display mode or every game. If one compatible title stutters, shows visual problems or behaves worse after the change, use Windows’ per-app graphics adjustment to disable the optimization for that game while leaving it enabled for others. Compare the same scene and input conditions before deciding which behavior is better; do not assume a problem in one title means the feature is faulty everywhere.
Consider Xbox mode for controller-first use
Requirements
Microsoft’s documented Xbox mode is for Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, supported markets and systems with an installed supported gaming home app. Availability is therefore conditional: a handheld can meet the Windows-version requirement and still not show the option in its region or with its installed software.
Enable the full-screen experience
- Open Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode.
- Select the installed supported gaming home app that you want to use.
- If offered, enable startup into that experience. Startup is optional.
Microsoft says startup into Xbox mode can limit background processes while gaming. That can make a handheld feel more like a console and reduce desktop interaction, but it is a usability choice rather than a guaranteed performance upgrade.
Know the trade-offs
Full-screen mode can change how some applications behave. Keep ordinary Windows desktop access in mind if you regularly switch to a browser, file manager, launcher or troubleshooting tool. If an app does not behave correctly in the full-screen environment, turn off automatic startup and launch the desktop normally. Xbox mode also does not remove the need to choose an appropriate power mode or to manage the handheld maker’s own controls.
Use Auto SR only on eligible hardware and games
Automatic Super Resolution is not a general Windows setting that every handheld can use. Microsoft identifies support for Copilot+ PCs and the ROG Xbox Ally X, subject to additional device and game requirements. Before looking for an Auto SR switch, verify that the exact handheld, Windows build and game are eligible. If Windows does not present the feature for that hardware, there is no supported setting to force it on.

Because eligibility is narrower than the general Windows graphics controls, do not treat Auto SR as a default recommendation or promise a particular frame-rate increase. Its usefulness depends on the supported game and the device’s implementation.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Treat HDR as a picture-quality versus battery decision
Check the display first
HDR requires an HDR-capable display. Open the display’s HDR controls in Windows Settings and confirm that the panel supports HDR before changing game options. A software toggle cannot turn a non-HDR panel into an HDR display.
Decide what happens on battery
Windows provides an option on HDR-capable displays to allow HDR games and apps while the device is running on battery. HDR can reduce battery life during unplugged gaming, so leaving that option enabled favors image quality and disabling it favors runtime. Make the choice per use case: HDR may be worthwhile for a short session or when connected to power, while SDR is often the better battery profile.
HDR and windowed-game optimization are separate controls. A compatible DirectX 10 or 11 game may gain access to Auto HDR through the windowed optimization path, but that does not make every game HDR-compatible or guarantee that the handheld’s panel can display it.
Clean up startup and background activity without breaking Windows
Microsoft’s general performance guidance recommends reviewing startup and background apps. On a handheld, close or disable only programs you recognize and do not need during play: launchers left open after a game starts, sync clients, chat overlays or other utilities can consume CPU time, memory and battery.

- After changing startup behavior, reboot and test the games and controls you actually use.
- Avoid blanket instructions to disable Windows services and avoid third-party “debloat” tools. The documented guidance supports targeted review, not indiscriminate removal.
Best performance still increases power use and heat even after background cleanup. Reducing unnecessary activity can make a session more consistent, but it does not eliminate the trade-off created by a high-power profile.
Account for the handheld maker’s control software
Many Windows handhelds add a manufacturer control application that changes wattage, fan behavior, display refresh, charging or thermal limits. The collected Microsoft guidance does not establish one set of profiles for every model, so treat those controls as device-specific. Record the current vendor profile before experimenting, change one control at a time and return to the previous profile if temperatures, noise or stability worsen.
Do not assume that a Windows label has the same effect on every handheld. A vendor utility may apply a separate performance limit, and firmware may constrain what Windows can request. When a setting appears unavailable, check that the device is plugged in or on battery as appropriate, that Windows is up to date, and that the manufacturer’s utility is not applying a conflicting profile.

- Update and identify the platform. Confirm that the device runs Windows 11 and note whether it is on version 24H2 or later if you want to evaluate Xbox mode.
- Set a neutral baseline. In Settings > System > Power & battery, choose Balanced and leave the vendor profile at its known default.
- Prepare a battery profile. For unplugged play, test Best power efficiency or Balanced, lower brightness, review Energy Saver recommendations and set practical screen-off and sleep timers.
- Prepare a plugged-in profile. Use Best performance only when its extra consumption and warmth are acceptable, then check the device maker’s thermal profile.
- Test windowed games individually. Enable Optimizations for windowed games, restart a compatible DirectX 10 or 11 title and keep a per-app exception ready if that game becomes less stable.
- Choose the interface. If the device, region and installed home app qualify, configure Xbox mode under Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode. Leave startup disabled if you need frequent desktop access.
- Check display features. Confirm HDR capability before enabling HDR on battery. Check Auto SR eligibility rather than searching for a universal switch.
- Trim only known background tasks. Review startup and background apps, keep required device software, reboot and retest.

Battery falls quickly
Switch from Best performance to Balanced or Best power efficiency, lower brightness, review Energy Saver and disable only recognized background apps you do not need. If HDR is enabled on battery, turn off the option that permits HDR games and apps on battery and compare the next session.

A borderless game stutters after changing graphics settings
Verify that it is a compatible DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 title, restart it, and use the per-app graphics control to disable Optimizations for windowed games for that title if necessary.
Xbox mode is missing
Check Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, supported-market availability and whether a supported gaming home app is installed. If any requirement is absent, use the normal Windows desktop or the handheld maker’s launcher instead.
Auto SR cannot be enabled
That is expected on many systems. Confirm the exact hardware and game requirements; Microsoft’s documented support is limited to eligible Copilot+ PCs and the ROG Xbox Ally X rather than all Windows handhelds.

What to change first
For most owners, the highest-value sequence is simple: use Balanced as the baseline, switch to Best power efficiency for battery-focused sessions, reserve Best performance for plugged-in or heat-tolerant play, and adjust brightness and HDR according to runtime priorities. Test windowed-game optimization only for compatible DirectX 10 or 11 titles, treat Xbox mode as an optional Windows 11 24H2 feature, and check Auto SR eligibility before looking for it. Keep the manufacturer’s controls in the loop, because the final result is a combination of Windows, firmware and the handheld’s own software.
