For most Windows 11 laptops, start with Balanced (or Recommended where that label appears). Use Best power efficiency when battery runtime is the priority, and switch to Best performance only for demanding work when the extra power draw is acceptable. Best performance can shorten battery life and make a laptop warmer, but Microsoft does not publish a universal number for the resulting temperature or speed change because the effect depends on the laptop and workload.
The power mode is only one part of the result. Brightness, refresh rate, screen and sleep timers, Energy saver, background apps, wireless radios and video-playback choices often determine how long a charge lasts. The controls are in Settings > System > Power & battery, although labels and available options vary by Windows build, hardware and manufacturer.

Best Windows 11 power settings by situation
| Situation | Power mode | Additional settings | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everyday browsing, documents and messaging | Balanced or Recommended | Use separate battery and plugged-in choices when Windows shows them; keep ordinary screen and sleep timers | A practical compromise between responsiveness, runtime and heat |
| Travel, classes or meetings where charging is difficult | Best power efficiency | Enable Energy saver, lower brightness, use a lower refresh rate and shorten screen-off and sleep timers | Lower power use, with potentially less fluid animation or reduced background activity |
| Rendering, compiling, gaming or another sustained heavy task | Best performance | Prefer AC power; return to an efficient mode afterward | Higher power consumption and possible additional warmth; battery drains faster on a laptop |
| Leaving the laptop briefly | Balanced or your normal battery mode | Use a short screen-off timeout and a suitable sleep timeout | Less idle consumption without fully closing your work |
| Leaving it for a long period without charging | Any mode before you leave | Use hibernation if the PC supports it | Hibernation uses less power than sleep but resumes more slowly |
These are starting points, not performance guarantees. A thin laptop with an efficient processor and a large display can behave differently from a workstation or gaming model under the same Windows setting.
What each Windows 11 power mode changes
Best power efficiency
Best power efficiency favors lower energy use. It is the appropriate first choice when you need the longest practical battery runtime and can accept more conservative performance behavior. Pair it with Energy saver and display adjustments for a larger effect than changing the mode alone.

Balanced or Recommended
Balanced is designed to trade performance and battery life rather than maximize either one. Recommended is the wording shown on some Windows 11 installations for the normal default choice. Use this mode for office work, web use, streaming and general multitasking unless you have a specific reason to favor efficiency or speed.
Best performance
Best performance prioritizes responsiveness and sustained performance. Microsoft’s support guidance states: “Selecting Best performance increases power consumption. On laptops, this setting will drain the battery more quickly and may cause the device to run warmer.” The guidance does not specify a fixed percentage of extra speed, a number of minutes lost from a charge or a particular temperature increase. Those outcomes vary with the processor, cooling design, firmware, workload and whether the charger is connected.
How to select a power mode
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Power & battery.
- Find Power mode.
- Choose Best power efficiency, Balanced or Best performance.
- If separate controls are displayed for battery and plugged-in operation, set each one independently. A sensible arrangement is Balanced on battery and Best performance when plugged in, provided the extra heat and electricity use are acceptable.
Some laptops expose only a subset of these choices, replace them with a manufacturer-specific label or manage them through the manufacturer’s utility. If Power mode is missing, do not assume Windows is malfunctioning; availability depends on the Windows build, hardware and firmware.

Turn on Energy saver
In Settings > System > Power & battery, open Energy saver. You can turn it on manually or configure it to activate at a chosen battery percentage. Windows then manages system processes and power use to favor longer battery life. Because Energy saver can change background behavior, enable it automatically for travel and leave it off when you need unrestricted background activity.
Reduce brightness without sacrificing comfort
The display consumes power whenever it is lit. Lower brightness to the minimum level that remains comfortable in your room, especially on battery. A modest brightness reduction can be more useful than changing a power mode while doing light work because it directly reduces display power. Avoid forcing the screen so dim that you compensate by reactivating it or moving closer; the practical setting is the lowest comfortable level.

Choose a lower refresh rate when motion smoothness is less important
Open Settings > System > Display and select the available refresh-rate option. Microsoft identifies a lower refresh rate as a way to use less power, although scrolling and animation may look less smooth. Use the higher rate for animation-sensitive work or gaming, then select the lower rate for writing, reading and travel if your display offers both choices.
Shorten screen-off and sleep timers
In Settings > System > Power & battery, open the screen, sleep and related timeout controls. Set a shorter Turn my screen off after interval for battery use so an unattended display is not left on. Choose a sleep interval that fits your workflow: too short can interrupt a meeting or reading session, while too long wastes power when you walk away.
Use different values for battery and plugged-in operation when Windows presents separate fields. A short battery timeout and a more generous plugged-in timeout avoid unnecessary interruptions while still protecting runtime away from a charger.
Review per-app battery use and background activity
Power & battery includes Battery usage per app on supported systems. Review the list after a normal work session and investigate apps consuming disproportionate energy. For apps that expose a background-activity control, restrict background use when you do not need notifications or synchronization while the app is closed. This is an app-by-app decision: limiting background work can delay updates or messages.
Use graphics power-saving choices where available
For supported applications, go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Windows can assign an application a Power saving graphics preference instead of a higher-performance preference. Choose it for software that does not need the fastest graphics processor, and reserve a performance preference for workloads that genuinely benefit from it.

Optimize video playback on battery
Windows provides video-playback choices that include Optimize for battery life and a lower-resolution option on supported systems. Select the battery-oriented choice for local or streaming video when maximum image quality is not essential. Use the higher-quality option when you are connected to power or need full resolution.
Microsoft’s published screen and sleep defaults
Microsoft lists different defaults for two laptop sleep designs. The values below are published defaults, not a recommendation that every user should copy and not a guarantee that your laptop uses them.
| Device type | Screen off on battery | Screen off plugged in | Sleep on battery | Sleep plugged in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Modern Standby | 3 minutes | 5 minutes | 3 minutes | 5 minutes |
| S3 | 3 minutes | 5 minutes | 10 minutes | 15 minutes |
Windows can use Modern Standby or the older S3 sleep model, and manufacturers can adjust defaults. If your laptop’s behavior differs from this table, use the values shown in Power & battery rather than treating the published figures as an error.
Sleep or hibernation when you step away
Sleep for short breaks
Sleep keeps the session ready for a relatively quick resume while using less power than leaving the screen and system fully active. It is convenient when you will return soon, but it still consumes power during the absence.

Hibernate for longer absences
Hibernation writes the session to storage and powers down more fully. Microsoft says it uses less power than sleep, but it resumes more slowly, and the option is not available on every PC. Use it before a long commute, overnight period or other extended time away when preserving the open session matters more than an instant wake.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Best performance make a laptop hotter?
It can. Best performance permits higher power consumption, and Microsoft specifically warns that a laptop may run warmer. The actual change depends on what the computer is doing: a light document session may show little difference, while a processor- or graphics-intensive task can produce more heat and fan activity.
There is no Microsoft-supplied universal temperature increase or performance uplift for a particular laptop. Treat the mode as a workload-dependent trade-off rather than a promise of a fixed result. If the laptop is already warm, use Balanced or Best power efficiency, reduce unnecessary background work and lower the display refresh rate when practical. Switch back to Best performance only when the task benefits from it and the extra heat is acceptable.
Windows guidance does not establish that you need a cooling pad, stand, replacement battery or other accessory simply because you changed Power mode. First adjust the built-in settings and observe whether they address your workload.

When a power setting is missing or seems ineffective
The power-mode menu has fewer choices
Option availability varies by Windows build, laptop hardware and manufacturer. Check for Windows updates and any manufacturer firmware or power-management updates, but do not expect every model to expose all three modes. A missing choice is not evidence that another mode is silently active.
Best Value
The laptop still runs warm on Balanced
Power mode does not remove the heat produced by an intensive workload. Check which applications are active, close unnecessary background tasks, lower the refresh rate and use Best power efficiency for routine work. If warmth is tied to one application, review that app’s battery and graphics preference rather than changing the whole system.
Battery life does not improve after enabling Energy saver
Battery runtime is affected by brightness, refresh rate, wireless radios, video playback, app activity and the battery’s condition. Confirm that Energy saver is actually enabled at the current battery level, then review Battery usage per app and the display settings. A mode change cannot compensate for a continuously active, power-hungry workload.
The laptop sleeps sooner than expected
Check the separate battery and plugged-in timeout fields. Compare your device type with Microsoft’s Modern Standby and S3 defaults, but use the values displayed on your own system as the authority. Increase the timeout if it interrupts your work, or shorten it if idle drain is the problem.
Hibernate is not listed
Not every PC exposes hibernation. Use the available sleep controls and a shorter sleep timeout, or check the laptop maker’s documentation for supported sleep states. Do not assume that a missing Hibernate command means the laptop cannot preserve a session; it means that option is not currently available through the standard controls.
How to choose without guessing
- Decide whether the immediate priority is responsiveness, runtime or lower power use.
- Check whether the laptop is on battery or connected to AC power.
- Select Best power efficiency, Balanced or Best performance accordingly.
- Adjust brightness, refresh rate, Energy saver and timeouts before judging the result.
- Run the same kind of work you normally do and review Battery usage per app.
- Keep the setting that meets the task without unnecessary heat or battery drain; use a different mode for a different routine.
Windows does not provide a single “best” mode for every laptop. Balanced or Recommended is the sound default, Best power efficiency is the battery-first choice, and Best performance is a temporary performance-first setting whose extra power use and possible warmth should be accepted deliberately.
