The right choice depends first on whether the device and its data plan work in your destinations, then on how much data you need, how many devices you’ll connect, and the battery life and portability you want. For some travelers a dedicated hotspot makes sense; for light use, a phone hotspot or travel eSIM may be simpler.
Start with network and destination compatibility
A hotspot can only connect where its cellular hardware and service plan are supported. Before choosing a model, check the exact regional version against the networks and bands used at every destination. Carrier-specific devices can be a poor fit for international travel unless the carrier confirms that the device and the traveler’s plan support the itinerary.

Coverage claims are not guarantees of service everywhere in a country. For example, Netgear advertises eSIM data plans for its Nighthawk M7 in more than 140 countries, but travelers should verify the destinations and terms available for their exact device and plan. Netgear Nighthawk M7 product information
Compare the data plan as carefully as the device
The hotspot is only part of the cost and service decision. Before buying, check the plan’s country list, data allowance, price, roaming behavior, tethering rules, and how to add data when the allowance runs out. Provider terms differ, and a plan that works in one destination may not cover another. TechRadar’s travel eSIM guide

Dedicated travel hotspot
A dedicated unit is useful when several devices need a shared connection or when you prefer not to rely on your phone for hotspot duty. It adds another device to carry and charge, and you still need a compatible data plan. Travel + Leisure’s 2026 roundup says it tested 15 portable hotspots across ease of use, performance, battery life, portability, quality, and value; its recommendations are separated by traveler needs rather than presenting one universal winner. Premium example: Netgear Nighthawk M7
Netgear’s product sheet for the Nighthawk M7 (MH7150) advertises 5G, Wi-Fi 7, eSIM data plans in 140+ countries, up to 10 hours of battery life, and up to 32 connected devices. These are manufacturer claims, not results from an independent, like-for-like travel test. Confirm the regional hardware, destination coverage, and plan terms before buying; the headline specifications alone do not establish value for a particular itinerary. Carrier-specific hotspot
A hotspot sold for a particular carrier may suit travelers whose plan and destinations align with that carrier’s service. T-Mobile’s guide lists the Franklin JEXtream RG3100 5G, describes international roaming as a feature, and says the device supports up to 32 devices. Confirm with the carrier whether the device and the traveler’s specific plan cover the intended destinations; do not assume roaming is included. T-Mobile’s mobile hotspot guide

Phone hotspot
If you travel alone or use little data, your phone may be enough when its plan includes a suitable hotspot allowance. This avoids carrying dedicated hardware, but can put hotspot work on the phone and may not be the best arrangement for a group. Check your plan’s allowance and rules before relying on it. Travel eSIM

Match capacity, battery and portability to your use
Once compatibility and data terms check out, compare practical details: the number of devices you will connect at once, battery runtime, size and weight, and whether USB or Ethernet connections matter to you. A larger stated connection limit is useful only if your plan and network can support your group’s use. Battery and speed figures in product materials are rated claims, not guarantees of travel performance.
