If several rooms or floors have poor coverage, a mesh system is usually the better category to consider. The right choice depends on where coverage fails, whether the extender can receive a usable signal, and whether your router supports the features you want.
Is an extender the right fix for a large house?
An extender is best suited to a limited problem: the router works well in most of the home, but one or two identifiable areas have weak Wi-Fi. It repeats the router’s signal, so it needs a usable connection where you place it.

If coverage is poor across multiple rooms or floors, a mesh system is designed for broader whole-home coverage. That does not guarantee a particular result, but it is a better fit for a widespread coverage problem than expecting one plug-in extender to serve the entire house.

| TP-Link RE655BE Wi-Fi 7 tri-band extender | One or a few weak areas in a home where the existing router otherwise works | TP-Link lists four external antennas, a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port, and EasyMesh support, and positions it for large or multi-story homes. Tom’s Guide recommends it as its leading extender. These recommendations do not establish performance in every house or floor plan. TP-Link product information; Tom’s Guide extender recommendations. |
| TP-Link Deco BE25 Wi-Fi 7 mesh system | Weak coverage across multiple rooms or floors | TP-Link rates it for up to 6,600 square feet and 150 devices. These are manufacturer-stated maximums, not guaranteed results in an individual home. TP-Link Deco BE25 specifications. |
| TP-Link RE715X Wi-Fi 6 extender | A single dead zone with an EasyMesh-compatible router | TP-Link lists EasyMesh and a Gigabit Ethernet port. Confirm the model’s hardware version and your router’s compatibility before choosing it. TP-Link RE715X product information. |
| eero Pro 7 mesh device | A mesh option to compare when the problem spans the home | eero lists coverage of up to 2,500 square feet per device. This is the manufacturer’s rating, not an independently verified result for a particular home. eero Pro 7 specifications. |
What to compare before choosing
- Number and location of weak areas: A single dead zone points toward an extender; weak coverage on several floors points toward mesh.
- Router and extender compatibility: Wi-Fi generation and mesh features depend on the hardware at both ends of the connection. A newer extender does not make an older router-to-extender link support newer Wi-Fi capabilities. Check the exact router model and extender hardware version.
- Wireless or wired connection: An extender repeats Wi-Fi wirelessly, while a compatible device in access-point mode can connect to the router over Ethernet.
- Roaming and network names: Mesh support can affect how devices move between points. TP-Link notes that a non-mesh extender may use a separate network name.
- Ports and connected devices: Check whether you need Ethernet ports and compare device support, while treating advertised limits as ratings rather than promises about your home.
- Placement constraints: Walls, masonry, mirrors, and large metal surfaces can make a wireless link less effective.
How to place an extender so it can repeat a usable signal
- Find the weak area. Identify where the router’s connection becomes unreliable and the area you want to improve.
- Start roughly halfway between the router and the weak area. TP-Link recommends this as a starting position; placing the extender too far toward the dead zone can leave it with a weak signal to repeat. Use the extender’s signal indicator, if available, to help find a suitable position. TP-Link placement guidance.
- Keep it away from obstructions where practical. TP-Link advises avoiding mirrors and large metal surfaces, which reflect signals, as well as walls, cabinets, and masonry that can absorb them. TP-Link placement guidance.
- Check the connection in the weak area. If the extender’s connection to the router is weak, moving it closer to the dead zone will not solve the underlying problem; it may make the wireless link worse.
- Consider Ethernet and AP mode if wireless placement is unstable. If the distance or obstacles prevent a stable wireless connection, TP-Link’s support guidance is to switch the extender to Access Point (AP) mode and connect it to the router by Ethernet, if the device supports that mode. TP-Link placement guidance.
How to interpret Wi-Fi generations and coverage figures
TP-Link lists the RE655BE as a Wi-Fi 7 tri-band extender with band rates of 5,764 + 4,323 + 688 Mbps, four external antennas, a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port, and EasyMesh. The listed rates are manufacturer link-rate specifications; they are not measured internet speeds or a guaranteed coverage radius. TP-Link RE655BE specifications.

The same TP-Link guide lists the RE653BE as another Wi-Fi 7 tri-band option and the RE715X as a Wi-Fi 6 choice for a single dead zone. Match the model to your router and check the hardware version and mesh compatibility rather than assuming that two products with the same brand or feature name will work together. TP-Link range-extender guide.
Coverage figures also need context. TP-Link’s up-to-6,600-square-foot and 150-device figures for the Deco BE25, and eero’s up-to-2,500-square-foot-per-device figure for the eero Pro 7, are manufacturer ratings. A home’s layout, floors, walls, and placement affect the result; the ratings do not establish how much area a system will cover in your specific house. What to expect from a non-mesh extender
Some non-mesh extenders use a separate network name, so devices may not move between the router and extender in the same way they do across a mesh setup. TP-Link also notes that some extenders can reduce available bandwidth when the same radio receives and rebroadcasts traffic. The effect depends on the model and setup; it is not a universal performance figure. TP-Link range-extender guide.
