Start with WhatsApp’s built-in sticker creator if it appears in your current Android or iPhone app. It can turn a photo into a sticker, let you add text, emoji, or drawings, place the sticker in a new or existing pack, and share that pack without leaving WhatsApp. Choose Sticker.ly when you need a dedicated editor with background removal, captions, video-based animated stickers, or pack sharing by link or code. No third-party app can be called universally best from the available evidence, so the right choice depends on how much editing and sharing control you need.
Which WhatsApp sticker maker should you use?
There are two practical starting points. WhatsApp’s own creator is the simplest route: your photo stays in the chat workflow, and the finished sticker can be added to a pack immediately. Sticker.ly is a separate editor for people who want more deliberate cutouts, captions, animated output, or a pack that can be distributed outside a single chat.

| What you need | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A quick sticker from one photo | WhatsApp built-in creator | Creation, pack placement, and sending happen inside WhatsApp. |
| Background removal and captions | Sticker.ly | Its publisher describes background erasure, text tools, and photo or illustration uploads. |
| Animated stickers from video | Sticker.ly or another compatible workflow | Sticker.ly’s store listings describe video-based animated stickers; the finished file still has to meet WhatsApp’s limits. |
| Sharing an entire pack by a link or code | Sticker.ly | The publisher describes pack sharing through links or codes, while WhatsApp shares packs from a chat. |
| Keeping permissions and exports to a minimum | WhatsApp built-in creator | You avoid adding a separate sticker app, although WhatsApp still needs access to the media you select. |
Feature availability is version- and region-dependent. WhatsApp describes custom packs for current Android and iOS versions, but rollout-limited tools such as AI sticker generation may not appear for every account or country. Update WhatsApp through your device’s app store and check the sticker tray before installing anything else.

WhatsApp’s Help Center documents a photo-to-sticker flow with preset editing options, emoji, text, and drawing tools. You can add the result to a new or existing pack, send it in a conversation, and share the pack from that chat. The official instructions are at WhatsApp’s custom sticker and sticker-pack guide.

Make a sticker from a photo
- Open the WhatsApp chat where you want to use the sticker.
- Open the sticker tray in the message composer and look for the create or add-sticker control. The wording and icon can differ between app versions.
- Select a photo from your device when prompted.
- Apply the available preset treatment, then use the emoji, text, or drawing controls if you want to annotate the image.
- Send the finished sticker. It is now available from your sticker tray.
If the create control is missing, first update WhatsApp, close and reopen it, and check again. A missing option can mean the feature has not reached your account or region yet; do not assume that installing a separate app will unlock WhatsApp’s own rollout-limited features.
Add the sticker to a pack
- From the sticker editor or the sticker’s options menu, choose the command to add it to a pack.
- Select an existing pack, or choose the option to create a new pack and give it a name when WhatsApp asks.
- Save the change, then open the pack from the sticker tray to confirm that the sticker appears.
WhatsApp’s documentation describes both new and existing packs. If you are building a themed set, add stickers one at a time and check the pack count and file limits before sharing.
Share a pack from WhatsApp
- Open the pack in the sticker tray.
- Use the pack’s menu and choose the share option.
- Select a WhatsApp chat and send the pack card or pack link that WhatsApp creates.
The recipient can open the shared pack and add it to their own sticker tray. Sharing a pack is different from sending one sticker: use the pack-level menu when you want the whole set.

AI sticker generation is optional and limited
WhatsApp also describes AI-generated stickers, but the feature is not universally available. Its documented description languages are English, Indonesian, Portuguese, and Spanish, and country-level availability can limit access. Treat AI stickers as an account feature to verify in the app, not as a guaranteed part of every current installation.

WhatsApp sticker file limits you must meet
These limits come from WhatsApp’s Help Center and apply to sticker uploads and packs. They are technical requirements, not measurements from a particular phone or editor.
| Sticker type | Maximum file size | Canvas limit | Animation limit | Maximum stickers in a pack |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Static | 100 KB per sticker | 512 × 512 pixels | Not applicable | 30 |
| Animated | 500 KB per sticker | 512 × 512 pixels | Total animation duration no more than 10 seconds | 30 |
Source: WhatsApp Help Center (accessed 2026; the page does not state a publication year). A pack that exceeds a size, dimension, duration, or count limit may fail to import or share even when the image looks correct in an editor.
Preparing static stickers
- Keep the artwork within a square 512 × 512-pixel canvas.
- Compress the exported file to 100 KB or less without making text or facial details unreadable.
- Use a transparent background when you want the sticker to blend into the chat, but check the exported file because some editors add a solid background.
- Count the stickers before finalizing the pack; WhatsApp allows up to 30 static stickers.
Preparing animated stickers
- Keep each sticker at 512 × 512 pixels or below.
- Keep each file at 500 KB or less.
- Keep the total animation duration at 10 seconds or less.
- Limit the animated pack to 30 stickers.
Reducing frame rate, trimming the clip, simplifying motion, and lowering visual complexity can help when an animated file is too large. Re-export and check the resulting file size rather than relying on the project’s original video size.

Sticker.ly is a dedicated third-party editor. Its official site describes uploading personal photos, memes, or illustrations; removing backgrounds; adding text; exporting to WhatsApp; and sharing packs through links or codes. Its store listings also describe animated stickers made from video. Review the current feature list at Sticker.ly’s official site, its Apple App Store listing, or its Google Play listing.

Create a static pack in Sticker.ly
- Install the current iOS or Android release from the relevant official store listing.
- Start a new sticker pack and add photos, memes, or illustrations from your device.
- Use the background-erasure tool to cut out the subject. Inspect edges around hair, fingers, and thin objects before continuing.
- Add captions or other text only after checking that it remains legible at sticker size.
- Repeat until the pack contains the stickers you want, then export the pack to WhatsApp.
- Open WhatsApp and verify the imported pack in the sticker tray. If an item is rejected, check its dimensions, file size, and the pack count against WhatsApp’s limits.
Create an animated sticker from video
- Choose the video-to-sticker option described in Sticker.ly’s current store listing.
- Trim the source to the short action you want readers to see repeatedly.
- Remove the background or add text if needed, then preview the loop for unwanted frames.
- Export to WhatsApp and confirm that every file is no larger than 500 KB, no larger than 512 × 512 pixels, and no longer than 10 seconds in total animation duration.
Sticker.ly’s feature descriptions explain what the app supports; they do not override WhatsApp’s import rules. A project can be valid inside Sticker.ly and still need compression or trimming before WhatsApp accepts it.
Share a Sticker.ly pack
Sticker.ly describes sharing packs with links or codes. That is useful when a group needs the same themed collection without receiving individual stickers one by one. Link and code behavior can change with an app update, so use the current share control shown in the installed version and confirm that the recipient can open it before distributing it widely.
Built-in WhatsApp versus Sticker.ly: practical differences
| Decision point | WhatsApp creator | Sticker.ly |
|---|---|---|
| Where you create | Inside WhatsApp’s sticker and chat workflow. | In a separate sticker-making app, then export to WhatsApp. |
| Editing described by the publisher | Preset options, emoji, text, and drawing. | Photo or illustration upload, background erasure, captions, and other dedicated editing controls. |
| Animated source | WhatsApp supports animated stickers subject to its file and duration limits. | Store listings describe making animated stickers from video. |
| Pack sharing | Share a pack from a WhatsApp chat. | Share packs through links or codes, then export or open them in WhatsApp. |
| Extra account or app | No separate sticker app is required when the feature is available. | Requires a current iOS or Android Sticker.ly installation. |
| Privacy review | Review WhatsApp’s existing media permissions. | Review a second app’s permissions and store disclosures before granting access. |
This is a workflow comparison, not a quality ranking. The available documentation does not establish that one option produces better-looking stickers for every image or device.

Sticker apps process personal photos, so read the current store disclosures before importing a camera roll. Google Play’s Sticker.ly listing says the app may share app activity, app information and performance, and device or other IDs. It also says the app may collect personal and financial information among other categories. Google notes that these disclosures are supplied by the developer and can change.

- Review whether the app requests contacts, location, microphone, or other permissions unrelated to the sticker you are making.
- Recheck the store’s Data safety or privacy section after major updates because disclosures and controls are not permanent.
- Delete imported projects or revoke media access when you no longer need the app, especially on a shared device.
Using WhatsApp’s built-in creator reduces the number of services in the workflow, but it does not make copyright or privacy concerns disappear. Only select media you are comfortable processing in the chosen app.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Copyright, consent, and WhatsApp’s rules
Use photographs, artwork, logos, and video frames that you own or have permission to use. Do not turn someone’s private image into a public pack without consent, and do not assume that a meme found online is free to redistribute. WhatsApp requires stickers to be legal, authorized, and acceptable under its rules.
For developers building their own sticker-pack app, WhatsApp’s official repository explains how third-party apps can package packs for Android and iOS: WhatsApp’s stickers sample apps and API repository. The repository advises iOS developers to submit an app with functionality beyond simply exporting stickers because of App Store review policy. That is developer guidance, not a promise that any particular app will be approved.
Troubleshooting common sticker-pack problems
The sticker creator is not visible
- Update WhatsApp to the newest version offered for your device.
- Open a chat, expand the sticker tray, and look for the create control rather than the emoji or GIF tabs.
- Restart WhatsApp and check again.
- If the control still does not appear, the feature may not have rolled out to your account or country. Use the documented features that are visible instead of treating the absence as a device fault.
A pack will not import or share
- Check every static sticker against the 100 KB and 512 × 512-pixel limits.
- For animated stickers, check the 500 KB, 512 × 512-pixel, and 10-second total-duration limits.
- Make sure the pack contains no more than 30 stickers of the relevant type.
- Re-export the problem item after trimming, resizing, or compressing it, then try the import again.
The cutout has a halo or missing details
Return to the background-erasure step and zoom in around hair, transparent objects, and narrow edges. A clean cutout at full-screen size can still show a white fringe when reduced to a 512-pixel sticker. Add a simple outline only if it improves legibility against both light and dark chat backgrounds.
Best Value
Text is unreadable in the chat
Preview the sticker at the size it will occupy in a message, not only on the editor’s full canvas. Shorten the caption, increase contrast, and remove decorative text that competes with the subject. WhatsApp’s 512 × 512-pixel canvas leaves limited room for long wording.
An animated sticker feels too large or slow
Trim the source, remove redundant frames, reduce visual detail, and export again. Confirm the final file size and duration after export; the source video’s specifications do not tell you whether the sticker meets WhatsApp’s limits.
A shared link or code does not work
Ask the sender to generate a fresh share link or code from the current app version. Then open it on the same platform for which the pack was created and check that WhatsApp is installed and up to date. If the pack still cannot be added, send the individual stickers or rebuild the pack within WhatsApp.
A simple decision checklist
- Need one or two stickers quickly? Try WhatsApp’s built-in creator first.
- Need precise cutouts, captions, or a reusable design workflow? Use Sticker.ly, then validate the exported files against WhatsApp’s limits.
- Need animation? Choose a workflow that accepts video, and plan around the 500 KB, 512 × 512-pixel, 10-second, and 30-sticker limits.
- Need to distribute a themed pack? Use WhatsApp’s pack sharing for a chat-based handoff or Sticker.ly’s link/code sharing when that distribution model is more convenient.
- Handling personal or copyrighted material? Review permissions, privacy disclosures, and usage rights before uploading.
For most people, the least complicated path is to test the built-in WhatsApp creator with one photo. Move to Sticker.ly only when the extra editing, animated-video workflow, or link-based pack sharing solves a problem that WhatsApp’s own tools do not.
