The best alternative depends first on whether your phone can still run a supported app—not simply on its age. Check its exact operating-system version and available updates, then choose between an internet messenger your contacts also use and built-in SMS/RCS messaging. An app being installable does not guarantee that it will work smoothly on an older handset.
Check your phone before choosing an alternative
Find the installed operating-system version in your phone’s Settings, then check whether the manufacturer offers an update. App support is tied to the OS version, not to a general label such as “old phone.” Also confirm that the app store on the device still allows you to install or update the app.

WhatsApp’s Help Center lists Android 6.0 and newer as supported. Its iPhone guidance says that from November 30, 2026, iOS 15.5 or newer will be required; because that cutoff is in the future, check WhatsApp’s Help Center for current requirements before relying on it.

Signal’s installation guidance lists Android 6.0 or later and iOS 15 or later. These are minimum OS requirements, not a promise of acceptable speed on every phone that meets them. Signal warns that on unsupported systems the app may open while messages and calls no longer work. It lists Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and iOS 14 as unsupported. Signal’s install and update troubleshooting also recommends at least 50 MB of free internal storage for a Signal install or update; that figure applies to Signal, not to every messaging app.

Choose the kind of messaging that fits
WhatsApp, Signal, and Facebook Messenger are internet-based services. To reach someone through one of them, both of you generally need to use that same service, and your phone needs an internet connection such as Wi-Fi or mobile data. By contrast, Google Messages can use carrier SMS and, where supported, RCS. SMS/RCS is not the same network as an internet messenger, and RCS features depend on the phone, carrier or service, and recipient.

Which option is most practical?
If you want to send messages to people without asking them to switch
On an Android phone, try the built-in SMS route in Google Messages if it is available. SMS can reach people with ordinary phone messaging, unlike an internet messenger that requires both sides to use the same service. RCS may add capabilities, but its availability and features are not established for every older phone, carrier, region, or recipient. Check what the app and carrier show on your device rather than assuming RCS will work.
If your contacts will use an internet messenger
Signal is a candidate only if your phone meets its OS requirement and the people you want to reach are willing to use it. Signal says its Signal-to-Signal communications are end-to-end encrypted and use an internet connection. It is not a drop-in way to message contacts who remain on WhatsApp or another service.

Check contacts, storage, and real-world usability
- Confirm the OS and updates. Check the phone’s Settings for its Android or iOS version, then look for an available system update.
- Check app-store eligibility. Search for the app on the phone itself. Store availability can vary by device and software version.
- Ask your intended contacts. Find out which messenger they will actually use before moving important conversations. Local adoption is a practical constraint, not something an app’s feature list can resolve.
- Check free storage. For Signal specifically, its support guidance recommends at least 50 MB of free internal storage for installation or updating. Other apps may have different needs.
- Try the tasks you need. After installation, test a text, photo, and voice message or call if those matter to you. Minimum OS support alone does not establish that the phone will handle them smoothly.

If the handset cannot update to a supported OS, the app store will not install an appropriate messenger, or basic use is too unreliable, there may be no compatible internet-messaging app that solves the problem on that phone. Use its available SMS option if that meets your needs, or consider a newer device only if you need app-based messaging the current phone cannot support. The phone’s exact model, operating system, and regional carrier determine what is possible.
