An AI referral is a visit that reaches your site after a person clicks a source link in an assistant answer. It is different from an assistant mentioning your brand, citing a page without a click, or an automated system fetching your content.
#1 Best Overall
Human clicks
A user asks a question, sees your URL in an answer, and follows it. The browser may send an assistant referrer, a tagged campaign value, both, or neither. Analytics tools can attribute the session only when enough information survives that handoff.
Automated retrieval
AI crawlers, training scrapers, retrieval systems and agentic workflows may request pages without representing a human visit. Some requests execute JavaScript and create analytics hits; others fetch raw HTML and never run your analytics tag. Matomo documents separate AI Agent and AI Chatbot reports for this traffic. Adobe describes three distinct situations: pretraining scraping, on-demand prompts that may retrieve raw HTML without JavaScript, and agentic workflows that can create hits when they browse like a user.
Why referrals are always incomplete
- Mobile apps and privacy controls can remove or truncate the HTTP referrer.
- A person can copy a URL from an answer and paste it into a new tab, producing Direct traffic.
- Links without UTM parameters provide no campaign fallback when the referrer is absent.
- Redirects, consent banners, ad blockers and script failures can prevent the analytics request.
- A report can group a newly launched assistant as an unknown referral until its domain is recognized.
For high-stakes reporting, compare analytics data with server or CDN logs and use tagged links in controlled campaigns. Neither method reveals assistant mentions that generate no request to your site.

Google Analytics 4: the practical default for existing GA4 sites
Google Analytics Help says that a May 13, 2026 update added a dedicated AI Assistant channel. Recognized referrers receive medium ai-assistant, channel AI Assistant and campaign (ai-assistant). Google describes this as “a dedicated way to measure and analyze traffic originating from popular AI assistants.”
Use the built-in channel first
After the update has processed new data, open your acquisition reports and select the AI Assistant channel. Use landing page, session engagement, key events, conversions and revenue as secondary dimensions or exploration breakdowns. This keeps assistant traffic in the same conversion model as search, referral and other channels.
Build a custom channel group when coverage is missing
Google also supports custom channel groups with regular-expression conditions matching assistant URLs. Put the custom AI channel above the generic Referrals channel; otherwise a matching session can be claimed by Referrals first.
- Open Admin and find the channel-group management area under data display.
- Create a new channel group or copy the default group so the original remains available for comparison.
- Add an “AI assistant” channel with a source or referring-URL condition using a regular expression for the assistant domains you want to recognize.
- Place that channel above Referrals in the rule order.
- Save the group, then test new sessions in Realtime and later in acquisition reports.
- Document every domain in the regex and review it whenever an assistant changes its link host.
Do not infer that a blank AI Assistant report means assistants never send traffic. It can also mean the user arrived through a stripped referrer, a copied link, an untagged redirect or a domain your rule does not yet include.

When GA4 is the right choice
Choose GA4 when your organization already relies on its event schema, conversion definitions, audiences, BigQuery exports or advertising integrations. The dedicated channel reduces setup, while custom groups provide a way to catch additional hosts. The trade-off is that GA4’s documented AI feature primarily classifies observed referral traffic; it does not provide the explicit agent-versus-human report structure described by Matomo.
Matomo: the clearest human-versus-machine split
Matomo Cloud’s AI Assistant acquisition channel covers ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Claude, Le Chat, Meta AI, iAsk and Perplexity. Matomo says the same capability is available in On-Premise from version 5.5.0.
Read the AI Assistants report
Go to Acquisition > AI Assistants. The report includes total visits, row evolution over time, goal conversions and segmented visit logs. Use the assistant name as the primary breakdown, then inspect landing pages and goals to see which content earns useful visits rather than merely high volume.
Keep automated access separate
Matomo’s AI Agent and AI Chatbot reports are designed for automated systems that retrieve or request content. The AI Assistant report measures visitors referred by assistants; direct AI-tool access belongs in the agent or chatbot reports. This distinction prevents a crawler spike from being presented as a successful audience campaign.
Historical limits
The dedicated channel applies to data collected after the relevant product update. Older sessions may not be backfilled consistently, so compare periods only after confirming when your Cloud property or On-Premise instance received the feature. For older data, inspect referrer dimensions and logs rather than assuming the new channel can reconstruct it.
When Matomo is the right choice
Matomo is the strongest fit when data ownership, self-hosting or explicit machine-traffic analysis matters. Cloud reduces maintenance; On-Premise gives more control but makes upgrades, bot definitions and infrastructure your responsibility.
Plausible: simple AI reporting tied to conversions
Plausible automatically groups known assistants into an AI Assistants channel. Its documentation names ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot among the recognized sources.
Rank #3
What you can connect to the channel
Open the AI Assistants channel to see the landing pages receiving visits and the resulting engagement. Plausible connects the source to goals, funnels, signups, orders, revenue and average order value, so a smaller assistant audience can be evaluated by business value rather than sessions alone.
The Tool Desk

Plausible states that known AI crawlers and bots are filtered. The channel is therefore intended to represent human visits that click through, not every automated request. Unknown automation can still evade any known-bot list, so use server logs when traffic volume or security decisions depend on complete machine visibility.
When Plausible is the right choice
Pick Plausible when you want a privacy-focused, low-configuration dashboard and your primary questions are “Which assistants send people?” and “Do those people sign up or buy?” It is less suited than an enterprise platform for highly customized dimensions across many properties.
Fathom: compact source reporting with historical data and API access
Fathom’s Sources tab includes an AI bucket covering ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, DeepSeek, Grok, Meta AI, You.com and Poe. Its October 2, 2026 changelog documents historical operation, per-tool filtering, CSV export and an API ai_source dimension.
How Fathom attributes a visit
Fathom combines referrers with UTM-tagged links. A session that has neither a referrer nor a UTM source appears as Direct. That rule explains why a campaign can show fewer AI visits than a human survey or server-log review suggests.
A practical reporting workflow
- Open Sources and select the AI bucket.
- Filter to an individual assistant when comparing quality, such as conversion rate or revenue per visit.
- Export CSV data for a period-over-period model or query the API using the
ai_sourcedimension. - Annotate launches and tagging changes so a historical reclassification is not mistaken for a sudden audience surge.
When Fathom is the right choice
Fathom suits teams that want recognizable assistant names without building channel rules. Its documented historical support is useful for trend work, while CSV and API access help connect the data to a warehouse or spreadsheet. Validate Direct traffic before declaring that an assistant is underperforming.
Adobe Analytics: enterprise analysis of conversational AI referrers
Adobe Experience League says, “Adobe Analytics provides tools for analyzing AI traffic on your website.” In Analysis Workspace, the Referrer type item Conversational AI tools is backed by a maintained list that includes domains such as chatgpt.com.
Rank #4
Why Adobe separates AI traffic types
- Pretraining scraping: bulk collection that may never create a browser analytics hit.
- On-demand prompts: a system can fetch raw HTML without executing JavaScript, leaving no client-side session.
- Agentic workflows: an agent that browses and clicks can generate hits similar to a user.
Use referrer type for link-click analysis, then combine it with your organization’s dimensions, segments and calculated metrics. For agentic traffic, inspect user-agent, server and implementation data rather than treating every conversational request as a customer.
When Adobe is the right choice
Adobe is appropriate when Analysis Workspace already governs enterprise reporting and you need configurable dimensions across brands, regions, properties or authenticated journeys. It brings powerful segmentation, but implementation and governance require more specialist work than the automatic channels in simpler products.

Implementation plan that works across platforms
1. Define the measurement boundary
Write down whether the report is intended to count human clicks, automated retrieval, or both. Give each a separate name. A single “AI traffic” number is not actionable if it combines a buyer with a crawler.
2. Preserve source information
- Keep the original referrer through redirects and canonical URL handling.
- For links you control, add a stable UTM source and campaign convention.
- Do not overwrite campaign parameters with a generic “referral” value at the edge or in your consent platform.
- Record landing page, assistant name, country, device and conversion event as separate dimensions where your privacy policy permits.
3. Instrument outcomes, not just sessions
Define the action that makes an assistant visit valuable: newsletter signup, demo request, account creation, purchase, subscription renewal or assisted conversion. Confirm that the same event is counted for search, referral and AI channels, then compare conversion rate, revenue and average order value rather than raw visits.
4. Add a machine-traffic review
Schedule a log review for unusual user agents, request rates, paths and response codes. If analytics reports a sudden increase but server requests do not, investigate tagging or attribution. If server requests surge without browser sessions, investigate automated retrieval.
5. Maintain the recognition list
Automatic channels depend on each vendor’s maintained domain list. Custom GA4 regex rules depend on your team. Keep a change log for new assistant hosts, redirects and product updates, and annotate the date each rule changed.
How to track ChatGPT traffic in GA4
Use the built-in AI Assistant channel first, then add a custom group only if you need additional hosts or a different classification.
- Confirm that your GA4 property is collecting page-view and conversion events correctly on the landing pages.
- In acquisition reporting, select the AI Assistant channel and set the date range after May 13, 2026 for data expected to use Google’s new classification.
- Break down the report by landing page and key event to identify content that earns useful visits.
- If an assistant is missing, open Admin, create or edit a channel group, add a source/referrer regular expression for the relevant host, and move the AI rule above Referrals.
- Test a newly tagged or naturally referred visit in Realtime, then wait for standard reports to process before judging volume.
- Compare the result with server or CDN logs and investigate Direct traffic before concluding that the assistant sent no visitors.
Troubleshooting common discrepancies
AI traffic appears as Direct
The referrer may have been stripped by an app, browser privacy control or redirect, or the user may have pasted the link. Add UTM parameters to links you distribute and preserve them through redirects. Do not reclassify all Direct traffic as AI without corroborating evidence.
The assistant is missing from the report
Check whether the vendor recognizes the current domain, whether your custom regex matches the full host, and whether the channel rule is above Referrals. A newly launched assistant can remain uncategorized until its domain enters a maintained list.
Server logs show requests but analytics shows none
The requester may fetch raw HTML without JavaScript, block scripts, fail consent requirements or identify as a crawler. This is expected for some on-demand and automated AI access. Classify it from logs instead of forcing it into human referral metrics.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
One platform reports more visits than another
Check collection timing, consent, bot filtering, session definitions, attribution windows, historical reclassification and whether one product counts tagged links that another treats as Direct. Compare the same landing pages and dates before comparing totals.
A sudden spike looks like a breakthrough
First rule out a domain-list update, a new redirect, a tracking deployment or crawler activity. Then inspect engagement depth and conversion quality. A volume increase without human behavior or outcomes is not evidence that assistant recommendations improved.
Choosing in one pass
- Choose GA4 if your team already operates GA4 and wants the lowest-friction path to the dedicated AI Assistant channel.
- Choose Matomo if separating referred people from AI agents and chatbots is a primary requirement, especially with self-hosting.
- Choose Plausible if privacy-focused simplicity and conversion-oriented reporting matter more than extensive customization.
- Choose Fathom if you want a compact AI source view, historical reporting, per-tool filters and straightforward CSV or API extraction.
- Choose Adobe Analytics if your enterprise already depends on Analysis Workspace and needs conversational-AI referrers integrated with complex dimensions and segments.
Whichever platform you use, report human assistant referrals separately from automated retrieval, annotate changes to recognition rules, and treat Direct as an attribution gap rather than proof that AI assistants sent no traffic.
