That does not make it waterproof or safe in every downpour. For any camera, check the exact body and lens documentation, and use a rain cover when exposure may be heavy or wind-driven.
What “weather-sealed” means in practice
Weather resistance is not a universal promise that a camera can be submerged, left in a downpour, or exposed to water from any direction. Protection claims are tied to the manufacturer’s stated conditions. Sony notes that IP-rated protection is measured in a strictly controlled laboratory environment, so a rating does not establish safety for every real-world exposure: Sony’s water and dust protection guidance.

For a specific model, consult its manual for the conditions and limitations behind the claim rather than treating “weather-sealed” as a guarantee. An IP classification, where given, is useful only when understood in the context of its stated test conditions.

The best-supported camera candidate in this guide
OM SYSTEM OM-1 Mark II
The OM-1 Mark II is a grounded candidate for rainy-day photography because OM SYSTEM’s official manual provides model-specific information about dust and water resistance. The manual also warns that those capabilities may be lost if the camera is subjected to shock. Read the OM-1 Mark II manual’s dust- and water-resistance information before relying on the camera in wet conditions.
#1 Best Overall
- 20.1MP stacked back illuminated 1" Exmor RS CMOS sensor w/ DRAM, large aperture 24-70mm1 F1.8-2.8 ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T lens
- Enhanced subject capture: wide 425 Phase/ 425 contrast detection points over 84 percent of the sensor
- Fast and accurate: Up to 11Fps continuous shooting at 24.2 MP raw with crisp, clear natural colors
- Multiple movie functions: Make time lapse movies or slow/quick motion videos without post processing
- Tiltable LCD screen: customizable for vlogging, still photography or recording a professional film
OM SYSTEM describes selected weather-resistant bodies and lenses as an outdoor system, rather than presenting body protection in isolation. Its splash-, dust- and freezeproof technology overview provides system-level context. These materials make the OM-1 Mark II a candidate to investigate, not a universal recommendation or a guarantee against rain damage.
Why the lens matters as much as the body
A protected camera body paired with a lens that is not designed for the same conditions can leave the overall setup vulnerable. Fujifilm’s support guidance says WR lenses can be used in light rain or dusty environments when attached to a dustproof and splashproof camera. See Fujifilm’s WR lens guidance.

- Cross Quad Pixel AF delivers 1,053 point, all cross-type 100% high-precision focusing
- 20M Stacked BSI Live MOS sensor provides amazing resolution and low noise
- TruePic X engine will deliver up to 3x faster processing power
- Computational photography functions, including Handheld High Res Shot, Live GND, Live ND, Handheld Live Composite, Focus Stacking & HDR shooting.
- IP53 for the most extreme conditions, including dustproof, splashproof and freeze proof performance to -10℃
Before choosing a body-and-lens combination, verify both products’ manuals and sealing claims. Check that the lens is compatible with the camera mount, and do not assume that a lens marked WR makes an unprotected body suitable for rain.

- Start with the exact camera model. Find its manufacturer manual and read the dust- and water-resistance section; do not infer a model’s protection from its brand or product family.
- Check the lens separately. Confirm that the chosen lens has its own relevant protection guidance and is compatible with the body.
- Match protection to the conditions. For heavier or wind-driven rain, add a rain cover or rain sleeve. Treat it as another layer, not proof that the setup is safe in a downpour.
- Protect openings and compartments. Keep water away from uncovered ports, and dry the equipment before opening compartments or changing lenses.
- Recheck after a knock or drop. Resistance can be compromised by physical shock; the OM-1 Mark II manual explicitly warns of this for its dust- and water-resistant capability.
What this comparison can—and cannot—rank
The available manufacturer documentation supports a specific discussion of the OM-1 Mark II, Sony’s general explanation of IP-rated protection, and Fujifilm’s guidance about WR lenses. It does not establish a balanced, current model-by-model comparison across the major mirrorless brands, so ranking alternatives by sealing strength would overstate what is known here.

When comparing cameras for your own needs, consider the documented exposure conditions, whether the lens is also protected, sensor format and system requirements, and how the body handles with a rain cover attached. Confirm those details for each specific model rather than relying on a brand-wide assumption.
